Happy New Years everyone, new contest is up!

Also, as we are nearing 50 pages I thought it best to toss out the old and bring in the new with GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5578957#post5578957).

This thread is now officially closed

After a long absense, I will be participating again. Working on my entry now.

EDIT: It's up. I probably screwed up a lot of the math though, I've been doing 4e stuff and I'm kind of out of practice for 3.5. I might post a picture later.

Futurelings:
A few formatting issues with linebreaks etc, but you probably already knew that and were going to fix it in the next revision.
Now normally I might have PMed you (a habit I have gotten out of, but MIGHT want to get back into), except that the major flaw I wanted to mention is one that I have seen often enough before that I think homebrewers in general should be made more aware of it.
Steal Time, as written, might as well read "This creature gets a free standard or move action every round and <stuff about denying actions to other creatures>".
Why you ask?
Because rats, earthworms, and mosquittos exist.
Whenever something has a benefit (or in one case I saw, an impairment) to a creature for harming another creature, remember the SMALL stuff people!
In this case some solutions might include one or more of the following:
-A cap on how long the points may be retained.
-Limiting it to sapient creatures (even then it is going to capture rather than kill, tie the enemies up and whack them for subdual damage to its clock-work heart's content, including 1st level commoners who get on their bad side).
-Speaking of which: Lethal Damage Only? (only useful in combination with another solution)
-Goes to zero every time they time-hop.
-Cap on how many points may be stored at one time (scaling with HD?)
-Target/victem must be the same size or larger than the Futureling.
-As above but HD rather than size class.

Alright. The Grandfather has been posted, and it may set the record for lowest hp on a CR 20 creature. Or maybe not.

Anyway, critique away! I'll admit I'm a little unsure of the CR, but I think that the addition of A Stitch in Time along with Time Stands Still and Flight of Time may make the estimate about right.

Glooble Glistencrist

I thought I'd included a limit of how many it could store at any given time. If not, I'll tweak that.

Yeah, my brother used that trick with his Misty Step in 4.0 - squashed five bugs to teleport 60ft.

The Watchdog is up. Please feel free to PEACH it. Comments and criticisms are welcome. This is my first time entering so I'd really like to hear what y'all have to say. Don't be afraid to tell me how much you hate it either.

Thanks Djinn. I loved that book too.

CR 20 for the Grandfather looks about right but challenge rating is more of an art than a science. My only complaint is that this seems like it should be a quasi-deity or at least an epic creature of CR 21. If he were a quasi-deity it would explain the 40 Wisdom a bit better. Having divine rank 0 is almost where you have put this --the only thing that you'd need to explain the low hit points, but that's easily accountable.

The Grandfather:
Since the teleportation can't be stopped by Dimensional Anchor or Dimension Lock (because both have a non-instantaneous duration), and is through time, then he can just pop back the instant he gets killed, having refilled his Spin off of some rats or whatever. In fact the only way I can think of winning a fight is Stone to Flesh with perhaps subdual damage (which doesn't technically reduce hp if I remember correctly) to keep him down until you can prepare and cast that. I am seeing CR closer to 30 than 20 here...

Watchdog:
Craft Wondrous Item is a feat, not a skill. Use Craft(Metal Working) or maybe even Craft(Clockworks), or if using the Blackmoor setting (or stuff from it), Craft(Clock and Steam).

The concept of an INT 10 creature being referred to as being "bred" for a specific purpose strikes me as Evil... they weren't slaves in the book, and seemed perfectly capable of picking there own mates/spouses. Now, if you wanted to make them follow something like the tenants of Allurehn (the goddess whose portfolio basically includes a benign form of eugenics that my mepholk follow) that would fit perfectly well.

Edit:
If they were in my world (where large enough dragons regularly get limbs painlessly guillotined off and Regenerated to sell to armorers, weaponsmiths and etc) then the watch of a Watchdog who died (especially of natural causes) would often be sold off to a craftsman who had a decent chance of repairing it, since such an accurate timepiece being kept in circulation would be in keeping with the mission (or at least personality) of the Watchdogs, and thus would be seen as perfectly honorable toward the deceased.

Well, I don't actually know the rules for Divine Rank, so I think I'll leave it as it is for now.

DracoDei, your point is a valid one, so I added a clause to his Deathless ability.

That said, from a DM's viewpoint, the Grandfather isn't the sort who would use his powers on animals simply to gain Spin. He would not destroy something if it is not that creatures time to die. So that's a case of monster psychology overriding mechanical exploits.

I think you may need to expand the fluff to make that more obvious then.
EDIT: Either you fixed it, or I just missed it the first time...

Well, I just realized what idea of mine I would like to use for this... the problem is that it is two outsiders who fight as a team but are eternal rivals. One is never encountered without the other. Are "two sides of the same coin" type entries allowed? IE is it "One creature" or "One entry"? If I must, I will limit myself to just the last one I guess... but they really are supposed to go together.

In any case... here is my first draft of the opening fluff.

"I am the first to strike."
"I am the last thing you will see before death claims you."
"I am speed incarnate."
"I am inevitability made flesh."
"I was the wind that seared every bit of your flesh."
"I will be the rock that will break your bone."
"None shall out-race my blades."
"None shall be unharmed by my blow."
"I am The First Word."
"I am The Final Word."
"We challenge you to honorable Combat!"

(And yes, 2nd edition fans, The Final Word was inspired by the weapon ability of the same name and The First Word was created especially to be his foil.)

Thanks a bunch. I meant to use a skill not a feat but have since decided that requiring the feat wasn't such a bad idea either.

Well that's a humanistic point of view and since the book was written for children, it is hardly surprising this wasn't mentioned.

From the watchdog's point of view mating is void of any emotional attachment. They may be intelligent, but they have a completely different mindset from humans. Watchdogs do not pairbond. The males abandon the females after soon after mating and leave the puppies to be raised solely by the females. Once the puppies are weaned in 6 to 8 weeks, they are fostered out to complete their training. After reaching adulthood in 10-12 months, a watchdog is assigned to his or her post.

Perhaps I need to add a bit more history to make this more palatable.

That's not a bad idea actually. I would see no problem with it.

Actually it looks like we are on the same page... while I PREFER monogamy and parental involvement, I understand that neither is required for Good alignment in D&D and wasn't referring to such matters at all... I was just talking about someone else forcefully picking their mates for them, which seems not to be the case.

Dracodei, why not make this two creatures trapped in one body with each one controlling one side? On the other hand, Batman's nemisis Two-Face springs to mind. The opening fluff is quite nice.

DracoDei

I would have to give it 4 arms (The First Word pretty much has to dual-wield and The Final Word really works better with a 2 handed sword than a longsword) and a split personality that acts on three different initiatives (The First Word gets a full round at +20 initiative modifier, then another at +10 initiative modifier and The Final Word gets its with a -20 initiative modifier)... doable in theory, but it works much better with 2 bodies rather than 1. I think I would rather only enter The Final Word than do that. (Or i could do The Gray Men from "Momo" by the same person who wrote "The Never-Ending Story"...)

Basically the part about "Never encountered except as a pair" is my major argument for it being allowed... I mean if I wanted to create a unique creature with a unique mount, that would sound reasonable so...

Regarding Opening Fluff: Thank you, glad you liked it.

Debihuman
2009-01-04, 06:51 PM
I was thinking more along the lines that if they have to dual wield their weapons then they have to work together (at least some of the time) and it makes walking and riding interesting if they can't agree on what they are doing. Maybe only one side is dominant at a time.

Or you could have them share a body back-to-back --giving them 4 arms and 4 legs and 2 heads but only one torso. I don't recall that being done.

Conjoined twins perhaps?

Debby

DracoDei
2009-01-04, 07:42 PM
Closest thing I ever saw to that:
I think it was in "Monsterous Geographica: Forest" (or around here if not) that I read of a creature that was a swam conjoined back to back with a vulture, one was always asleep when the other was awake, the swan good, the vulture evil. The vulture could make a skill check to fly upside-down to make people looking up from below think it was the swan mode. Started from human twins who got transformed and magicked together (in a single spell/ritual). Then later their wives got involved in the situation and had the same thing happen to them, and thus a new race was born.

And I still think having it act on 3 different initiatives and so forth doesn't work so hot... having a mode change MIGHT... but still not quite as good.

Ahhh....nothing like finishing a monster at 3:00am after several hours of hard work :smallsigh:

I still have some issues about balance, the inability to wear armor could be a huge penalty, however it doesn't hinder spellcasters. Their daily spells could be a little wonky, but they can't use them often, so I figure it's not a gigantic issue. What I need is some PEACHing and more options for player characters. Oh, and first playable monster in the competition :smallcool:

Kudos to whoever can guess what my 2 main inspirations were....

I just noticed that I messed up the Lore section by not looking at how Knowledge checks are done and most of the entries seem to be off on this.

From the SRD:

In general, the DC of such a check equals 10 + the monster’s HD. A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster.

For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information.

Lappy -- How does the Sentient Plant subtype differ from the Augmented subtype? I don't mind new subtypes, but this seems rather unneccessary.

Why is the sample creature a warrior? It isn't even it's favored class. If you change it to Bard that would make a lot more sense.

Born to Blossom pretty much negates the restriction to wearing armor. Furthermore, the restriction seem pretty arbitrary to me. You don't say why the restriction is in place other than their anatomy, but their anatomy is humanoid! That is contradictory. If it interfered with the diatocks' special abilities that would make sense.

Is the blur effect a constant effect? That's a neat idea but again, even without being able to wear armor this seems a bit powerful.

You should have probably used the Elite Array before making adjustments. [From the SRD: The elite array is: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. While the monster has one weakness compared to a typical member of its race, it is significantly better overall. The elite array is most appropriate for monsters who add levels in a player character class.]

Monster Manual tradition... warriors are much more basic (technically outnumbering fighters in any given population) and out of the box while still being useable as an encounter. If that last thing weren't a requirement then they should be commoners.

Lappy -- How does the Sentient Plant subtype differ from the Augmented subtype? I don't mind new subtypes, but this seems rather unneccessary.
The Augmented Subtype is usually a monster who has changed type. Diatocks haven't changed into humanoids while retaining plant traits, they're plants who echo humanoid feelings.

Why is the sample creature a warrior? It isn't even it's favored class. If you change it to Bard that would make a lot more sense.
I don't think it's a set rule, but I figuted it was standard since I've never seen a monster with a +0 LA in any Monster Manual that uses any class other than warrior in the monster entry.

Born to Blossom pretty much negates the restriction to wearing armor.

Is the blur effect a constant effect? That's a neat idea but again, even without being able to wear armor this seems a bit powerful.
A 20% miss chance isn't really that awesome. Sure, a 1st-level Diatock bard can still score a 17 AC if she puts an 18 into Dexterity and uses a heavy shield, but when she rolls snake eyes on the duration for her born to blossom ability and the 4 in 5 chance of being hit fails her when fighting some BBEG, she's going to wish she had a good ol' fashioned chain shirt.

Furthermore, the restriction seem pretty arbitrary to me. You don't say why the restriction is in place other than their anatomy, but their anatomy is humanoid! That is contradictory. If it interfered with the diatocks' special abilities that would make sense.
Humanoid-shaped plants still can't wear armor, which is the excuse Wizards tends to use, so I just went with that. I'll clarify things a bit more, though.

Monster entry creatures are meant to be NPCs so nonelite array looks like the way to go. Like the warrior thing, I don't recall seeing any PC monster with elite array scores (unless they're actually being played by a PC).

Thanks for the PEACH!

EDIT: Geez, way to Ninja me, DracoDei. I didn't know you were a dragon and a ninja :smalltongue:
I eagerly await your entry. You always aim to impress!

Double Edit: Before anyone asks about why crystalline creatures are defined as a plant creature, diatocks are based partly off diatoms, microscopic crystal-like protists (I know they're not plants, but it seemed close enought by D&D standards)

Time Theme + Microscopic Protists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatom) + Gwen Stefani (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI_EOPG5sWo) = Diatocks.

My bad. I wasn't thinking of how the Monster Manual presents creatures. It is correctly as an 1st level NPC warrior.

Lappy,

Also, you had this under Diatocks as Characters: ""Traits: A soulstitched possesses the following traits:...." Don't you mean "diatock" not "soulstitched"?

BTW, it is missing 8 skill points. The modifier for Int is always a minimum of 1 so even creatures with penalties to Int still get skill points to spend. Plants get 2 times Int modifier (minimum 1) with quadruple for their first HD.

Well Bhu they are both up now, albeit in very rough forms... if VT or the majority of other contestants think it in the spirit of the contest I will withdraw the "The First Word" portion of the entry from the contest, placing both Words into a separate thread for people to use, and leaving The Final Word here as the entry.

What do people think I should do with the Deflection bonuses? They don't use their Charisma for much else, so I can vary them to whatever I like or even drop them entirely from on or the other of them...

Mainly it is the ability to split its time line allowing it to take two turns (or sets of turns) from a starting point after which both merge back together (at one of the locations) with all effects done to both combine (ie. if one takes 10 dmg and the other takes 15 then when the effect ends it will have 25 damage). Does this seem like it would be better for something more monstrous, or something more humanoid (can use equipment etc.)?

Monstrous (IE without opposable thumbs) means it can't use most equipment and is MUCH less likely to have equipment... this keeps things much simpler...
It also avoids arguements about "I strap +5 barding of wootness onto it, get it to split, then teleport one split away and dimensional anchor it preventing it from rejoining while I remove the barding, then sell the barding, wash/rinse/repeat."... come to that, probably just say that it can't time-clone equipment period...

Why not? Maybe the equipment, if removed from the time clone, reverts back to it's original timeline, thus disappearing. That seems like a much more elegant way of preventing that sort of abuse. Although I'm not sure even that is necessary, since (speaking strictly for myself) I at least only make monsters with their primary function in mind; they're supposed to be creative and original antagonists/allies, not something to abuse mechanically to eke out every benefit. Player's aren't supposed to find out exactly what's going on or how to exploit it.

But maybe that's just me.

Well, after a long time with no Homebrewing (Fallout 3 and school will do that to you), I am back in the field, if only for one more submission. Pretty happy with this one, like the concept. For the Temporal Echoes:
The Superior Movement: ability needs to specify it is Ex or Su, and I think Superior Incorporeality: would perhaps be more descriptive, if PERHAPS slightly less accurate... also the way it is written makes it sound like they can go as deep as they like, but if they do they can't come out the other side.

((And may I mark myself down for an "immitation is the sincerest form of flattery" point for this or something? Free Spirit did it first... or did you come up with it independantly do you think?))

Lore DC numbers are way off -- they shouldn't be so high as they are based on 10+HD and then +5 for every next level. Starting with DC 30 for a 5 HD monster is simply too high and the 50 DC for the last is ridiculous. Normally the progression would be 15, 20, 25. I could see you making a case that due to their rarity it would be more difficult so 20, 25, 30 isn't wholly unreasonable but going beyond that will be.

Challenge Rating is missing. Granted, this is more of an art than a science but they have a lot of immunities and they cast spells at caster level 11 which is significant. I'd put their CR rating at least 7 despite their low number of hit dice. Ability drain tends to be problematic for lower levels because it is permanent unlike ability damage. In conjunction with it being immune to turning, you are looking at a TPK in a handbasket. The problem with handing out special abilities like candy is that it tends to make creatures which are unbalance for the number of HD they have.

Heritage should probably be 6-10 or family 2-4 since the overlap doesn't make much sense. Organization is probably "Any" since you could have generations of these things.

Incorporeal creatures hiding inside solid objects get a +2 circumstance bonus on Listen checks.

Just my two cents.

Nope, sorry Draco, never read your free spirit.

EDIT: RE-read the Lore stuff. I'll go back and fix some of that stuff.
As for the ability drain, I was basing of the Ghast's 1d4 Constitution Drain, but I can see how that could be unbalanced.

I guess I'll ratchet down the touch damage and make it ability damage instead of drain. These things aren't supposed to hit high anyway.

The ghast's ability drain is only transmitted on a successful bite and has a 1 day incubation period (before damage can begin) and is avoidable with a DC 15 Fort Save. You didn't mention anything about a save and damage happens immediately. This makes your critter far more dangerous to lower level parties.

I just realized, I made two mistakes.

Firstly, the Drain was based on the drain from the wraith, not the ghast. Secondly, I forgot to add that drain to the special attacks (Which adds the save against that drain).

I set the CR at 8. I'm pretty happy with that. Considering the sheer number of immunities it has, I think that 8 is an acceptable CR, especially considering the high miss chances. The idea is that it's hard to hit, but doesn't deal much. It's spell-like abilities are all about evading and controlling from the sidelines.

I don't like making tank monster, I like making subtle monsters that can control from the sidelines. Fragile, but quick and subtle.

Temporal Echo is missing its Initiative 7 (+3 Dex, +4 Improved Initiative); its Fort save is wrong and it should be +1 (it still gets to have its poor fort save based on hd with no modifier for Con); the word "melee" is missing on attacks. I.e. Incorporeal Touch +5 melee.... Can they speak and if so, what language(s) do they know? Note that they only get one bonus language based on Int.

Okay, I'm looking at the "Twins." Right off the bat, I have absolutely no idea what these are. A reference would be nice. Who is speaking the quotes? When you have a creature, you should have at least a brief description. These really need a little history to flesh out.

I don't understand initiative at all. it seems like one may always go first regardless of initiative and the other always goes last regardless of initiative. Giving one a -20 and the other a +20 doesn't really reflect that other than to seem arbitrary. Perhaps this should be a special quality.

Is the +5 deflection bonus from Cha? Where is described?

What is the special ability "Final Word"? It is still missing.

Environment should at least state their home plane.

Creatures with a swim speed need to have the swim skill in their stat block [they have a +8 bonus].

The First Word doesn't qualify for an epic feat as it doesn't have enough hit dice. Frankly with three bonus feats, you should probably have given it more hit dice.

The Sword of the Final Word comes out to a +9 level weapon by the book I think before you add in the fact that the -20 to initiative, the *True Strike* effect, the no AoO/Cleave/Whirlwind Attack/etc, and the Maximized damage thing... I eyeballed that into there by making it 50k more than a +10 enchantment equivalent weapon.

I gave no value for how much The Swords of the First Word are worth. (So what do people think it should be?)

26 | Temporal Echoes will often band up with any relatives they should have had to extract revenge on whoever caused them to not be born.[/table]

I think that happening in the first check is standard, but I'm not sure.

Skills: Bluff +8, Diplomacy +8, Hide +13, Listen +8, Search +6, Sense Motive +10, Spellcraft +8
Feats: Ability Focus (Ability Drain), Improved Initiative,
Minor typo thing. Left a comma in after Improved Initiative.

It is said that the multiverse has a plan. Certain people live, certain people die. Certain people get together, certain people never talk to each other.
Should be a semi-colon there.

Other than that, it looks excellent!

Debihuman, just found some minor typos:

A deceased watchdog's pocketwatch has been stolen from the Hall of the Fallen (a mauseoleum which displays the the pocketwatchs of the greatest watchdogs whoever lived). The heirs of the deceased request the PCs to find the missing item.

A watchdog has been corrupted and enslaved by a covey of hags. The PCs are recuited to stop the nefarious plans.

Those should be "mausoleum", "pocketwatches", and "recruited". And there's an extra "the" in there too.

DC| Result
16 | The creature is a watchdog and guards the Doldrums. Its purpose is to see that time is being used wisely. This reveals type and subtype.
21 |A watchdog’s bark is worse than its bite and it can sound its alarm as warning. Watchdogs can talk and sometimes carry passengers.
26 |Reveals all special abilities and special qualities. Bards can tell which lineage a particular watchdog is from, adding +2 to any diplomacy checks.

DracoDei, As far as I know, you cannot give out epic bonus feats until a creature has at least 21 HD. Even if I'm wrong, you should really reconsider upping the number of HD. Monsters really shouldn't have more than 2 bonus feats. More than two bonus feats, and they deserve to have more hit dice. The First Word has 4 bonus feats and one of those is epic. This is making very difficult to evaluate.

Can a challenger refuse to accept the challenge from either of these? What if a PC simply concedes the battle? Can they be banished?

A friend of mine with a degree in English once said something along the lines of "In highschool they teach you the rules of language. In college they show you how to break selectively nearly everyone of those rules to good advantage." I am breaking the rules. Next you are going to tell me that arbitrarily giving The Final Word a -20 to initiative or maximizing his damage doesn't fly because it doesn't follow the rules guidelines for how things are supposed to work. As for bonus feats specifically... so I made some of the HD count like fighter levels to some extent? So what? So I gave out an epic bonus feat? I COULD have just upped the intiative bonus from double-haste by 4 more points, but the epic feat underlines the whole "epitomy of swiftness of attack" thing much better IMHO. Now, yes, it DOES make it even harder to judge the CR, but what is life without a little challenge, eh?

Can a challenger refuse to accept the challenge from either of these?
Answer to the question you really asked: Sure, but they would probably be a fool to.
Bit of a nit-pick: They never fight appart from eachother, they always fight as a team, the party accepts or declines the challenge for both of them together.

What if a PC simply concedes the battle?
Ummmm, good question, never really occured to me that anyone would concede after accepting.... then they laugh at him and kill him as slowly and painfully as possible for being such a wimp maybe? (and then they get True Rezzed, just like normal)
Edit: I guess if the PARTY conceded and it was fairly obvious as to the details of how things were going to turn out (remember they are motivated by competion with eachother, as well as with others).

Can they be banished?
As it currently stands... yes. Might have to look into that though... would be kinda cheesy to banish one and then defeat the other for his weapon(s) I think... maybe make it so they are banished together as if they were a single 40HD creature, and either are both banished or both remain???
Edit: Just realized that you may have meant: "Does banishing them count as defeating them so that they leave their weapons behind?", the answer is in that case is "No".

I am breaking the rules.

Indeed, you may break any rule as you see fit. However, you failed to explain any reason for doing so. Moreover, I'm not convinced that breaking the rules makes this creature better. That's the point of this discourse--to make your creature better.

Next you are going to tell me that arbitrarily giving The Final Word a -20 to initiative or maximizing his damage doesn't fly because it doesn't follow the rules guidelines for how things are supposed to work.

Actually I don't care that you broke the rules. I wanted to understand WHY and why it matters and why I should vote for YOU over anyone else. See if you said, "The First Word is a creature of immense speed; it always strikes first and wins first iniative in the intial round of combat" THAT would have been sufficient. I'm far less concerned that your creature breaks the rules, than I am that it be well thought out and comprehensible. If you wish to be arbitary rather than thoughful, it shows. It also reflects poorly on your creation, which by rights should be freaking awesome.

As for bonus feats specifically... so I made some of the HD count like fighter levels to some extent? So what? So I gave out an epic bonus feat? Answer to the question you really asked: Sure, but they would probably be a fool to [refuse a challenge].

Why would someone be a fool to refuse a challenge? There are plenty of reasons to refuse a challenge. Not everyone thinks it is honorable to accept a challenge without a good reason. Not accepting the challenge should simply avoid the conflict.

Why would they attack someone who refused their challenge? That's pretty evil if you ask me. If you think they would taunt and then kill the person for refusing, I'd say you really need to rethink that alignment.

Bit of a nit-pick: They never fight apart from each other; they always fight as a team. the party accepts or declines the challenge for both of them together.

The party may or may not decide to fight as a group. If the majority of the party declines what happens? You can't predetermine what a bunch of PCs are going to do. First, you can concede BEFORE accepting the challenge. Second, if the PCs are losing, they should have the option of conceding honorably. If this leads them to certain death, perhaps you need to rethink the alignment of these creature.

Well, banishment is the standard spell for defeating outsiders. If they have to save as a single 40 HD monster, they have terrible saves. If one makes the save for both, you need to decide which one that is.

BTW, a 17th level spellcaster with Powerword: Kill can take out The First Word with it.

What is the basis for this monster? I'm not familiar with the source.

It's nice to see more competition.

Bisected: if a creature can't move its speed is 0 feet (immobile).

CR for a an immobile plant is probably low. Being moved forward in time isn't necessarily dangerous and the bite does less damage than a tendriculous so I'd guessimate that CR is around 4 or 5.

You have temporal fruit listed as temperate fruit in Special Abilities.

Other than you need to fix your formatting on the first line [need a line space between creature's name and size/type], it looks really good.

Sower of Seeds looks great. While I understand the immunity to electricity, I'm not sure why they should be immune to disease and poison. Many venoms are natural. Diseases, except supernatural diseases like mummy rot, are natural too.

AH HA!!! (and Eureka! too.)
I now hypothesize that this all comes down to one very simple thing: I was writing the crunch rather than the fluff first. You weren't saying "Never do that!" you were saying "Needs MOAR FLUFF!"... which I was perfectly aware that it did/does (can't remember if I supported everything you mentioned with fluff). I suspect we were on the same page all along.

Good advice, and something I was probably at least vaguely aware of... whether I was aware enough of it? Probably not. Thank you very much, I will try to take it to heart.

Why would someone be a fool to refuse a challenge? There are plenty of reasons to refuse a challenge. Not everyone thinks it is honorable to accept a challenge without a good reason. Not accepting the challenge should simply avoid the conflict.
Yeah, good point. One of those things that I find myself thinking "I was thinking that was a possibility, WHY didn't I type that?". In any case, they would probably issue some accusations of cowardice in courtly language and if that didn't work, they would leave... which reminds me, I need to give them both Plane Shift once per week or something... maybe even the same nerfed version of Wish (Transportation only, self and equipment only), as I gave the Free Spirit.

Why would they attack someone who refused their challenge? That's pretty evil if you ask me. If you think they would taunt and then kill the person for refusing, I'd say you really need to rethink that alignment.
They wouldn't attack someone for refusing the challenge. They would attack someone who "didn't want to play the game to the end after agreeing to start". To pick an example at random: Sorta like a pro football team walking off the field with a full quarter left to play... doesn't matter if you are behind 35 to 0 and your star QB had to leave the stadium in an ambulance... you finish the game if their is that much of it left.

The party may or may not decide to fight as a group. If the majority of the party declines what happens? You can't predetermine what a bunch of PCs are going to do. What happens if only one person in the party accepts the challenge? I'm not sure that makes for a good challenge or even a fair challenge.
Yes, that is a very bad thing. The Words would probably suggest cancelling the whole thing if half the party were raring to go and half refused to have anything to do with it. Although they would be perfectly willing to proceed if the opponents did not agree to that. In any case, it is no different in the end then:
GM: You all come over the hill, and see a huge red dragon 50 feet in front of you.
Player 1: I turn around and run like a scalded jackrabbit.
Player 2: I fall to my knees and beg for mercy.
Player 3: I no challantly keep walking and hope it is not seeking conflict at this particular time.
Player 4: I charge it with my Great-Axe.

Both situations are cases of the party falling short of bare minimum conhesion, and thus are very very bad things.

First, you can concede BEFORE accepting the challenge. Second, if the PCs are losing, they should have the option of conceding honorably. If this leads them to certain death, perhaps you need to rethink the alignment of these creature.
Conceding before the fight starts is just another form of refusing the challenge, and would cause them to roll their eyes at most. As for "Honorable surrender" see my football analogy... OTOH, if there are only 2 minutes left in the game and the score is still 35 to 0, I think the game can be called without anyone feeling bad about it. So... maybe they would occasionally accept such a surrender... the whole point is that with the True Rez thing in effect, it really comes down to a sparring match. Death as a revolving door and all that. Each of the Words might have died at least once a year for the past millenium, and they think nothing of it, and neither should anyone they challenge in their opinion. That is not evil or good, it is competitive.

Well, banishment is the standard spell for defeating outsiders. If they have to save as a single 40 HD monster, they have terrible saves. If one makes the save for both, you need to decide which one that is.
Well, since they both have the same will save it doesn't usually matter which one of them rolls it technically... and the 40 HD thing was basically "crunch-speak" for a fluff of "Unless your name is Elminster, Mordenkain, or some other such, don't even bother trying."

BTW, a 17th level spellcaster with Powerword: Kill can take out The First Word with it.
And if they can get that past the SR, then that is perfectly fine. I have no thematic objection to them falling to a single spell, just that a single 4th level spell (as in the case with Dismissal) seems a bit out of place. 9th level? Not so much...

What is the basis for this monster? I'm not familiar with the source.
The Final Word: In Second Edition, there was a weapon enchantment called "Final Word", it meant you always went last (or maybe just one of your attacks per round was last?), but that attack always hit and always did maximum damage. The Final Word can miss on a natural 1, not to mention if someone pumps their AC that high somehow (I have been told it is possible), but that is fine for the transition from 2nd to 3.5, not everything is going to translate perfectly, and True Strike is a simple and handy concept that does what is needed well enough.

The First Word: Polar opposite in every respect, just to make the fight even more thematic and memorable.

Thanks, I forgot I left out the speed and CR.

Good advice, and something I was probably at least vaguely aware of... whether I was aware enough of it? Probably not. Thank you very much, I will try to take it to heart.

You are very welcome. I have now officially done my good deed for the day. Honestly, if I had just said, "your monster needs more fluff," it wouldn't really have been at all helpful and it was something you already knew.

Don't mistake mechanics for fluff. Fluff can be entirely removed such as my fluff on when watchdog puppies are weaned [nobody really needs that information] but explaining how a new special ability works isn't fluff, it's mechanics. Crunch is the stat block but mechanics are what really showcase the creature. As long as the mechanics are sound, it really doesn't matter that the creature doesn't exactly follow the rules. This is especially true when using a mechanic to showcase a specific feature.

I'll use my own creature as an example. The watchdog has a special ability, Time Heals All Wounds. It is similar to the paladin's ability to Lay On Hands but isn't as effective. First, I didn't want it match the paladin's ability exactly because I think the class abilities should stay special to the classes. Second, because I just couldn't resist the pun. The Phantom Tollbooth is full of puns so this honors the original source.

If you follow the format in the SRD, you'll see a lot of repetition of key phrases and game mechanics. If a creature has a Small size it always gets a bonus to Hide, unless you determine otherwise. The otherwise should ALWAYS be explained and the best way to explain it is in the Special abilities. Not just that it has this ability but WHY it has this ability. Just because it seems KEWL is acceptable of course, but it really helps if the ability also fits the theme of the creature.

Glad to help.

I tweaked the watchdog a bit by fixing the Bark DC, correcting the AC to reflect the +4 natural as standard dogs have and adding the line that watchdogs always know what tiime it is.

Things I've noticed:

More Lore section mishaps. First, as I previously mentioned in an earlier post (though not everyone read it.... Lore checks are 10 + HD of creature and go up by 5). It's an obscure enough rule but it's easy to fix. However, you don't have to slavishly adhere to this: simply state whether your creature is more or less common than average will suffice. If you don't expressly state it, it looks like a mistake.

The First Word/Last Word -- missing lore section completely. You also need a more definitive CR rating for these creatures. The question marks look sloppy.

Carnivorous Thyme -- In your case, carnivorous thyme might be common enough that the DC checks are lower. You need to mention that somewhere. What kind of check is needed? Knowledge (Nature) is the most appropriate.

Temporal Echo -- You should state that the lore checks are higher due to the creature's relative obscurity. What if the DM wants to use this in a small city or just a town? According to your Lore check, the PCs will find out nothing at all.

Clockwork Reaver -- Lore should start at 17 not 10 unless these are common enough. The first check usually reveals Type and subtype.

What is "astral steel"? I didn't see it in the SRD and I couldn't find a reference on a Google search. I think you should refer to the source of this and list its special properties because without that information, a DM can't really use this creature.

Retrospect: Needs lore section. It's nice to see a reference to Planescape even if it's a bit obscure for some newer players.

Thanks Debi, I've never heard of that Lore rule before o_O

Clockwork Reaver -- Lore should start at 17 not 10 unless these are common enough. The first check usually reveals Type and subtype. I had hoped Type would be easy enough to discern just by looking at it... it's a giant clockwork monster... really... Personally, though, I really prefer leaving it up to the DM's discretion as to how easy it is to know. In one campaign, they may be common, and in another they may never be heard of. I'd assume (and yes, I know what they say about when you assume) that if the DM is going to use it, timetravel isn't THAT unheard of.

What is "astral steel"? I didn't see it in the SRD and I couldn't find a reference on a Google search. I think you should refer to the source of this and list its special properties because without that information, a DM can't really use this creature. You won't find it in any sourcebook. It's a unique quality of this creature, which is why it's in the special qualities section...

Retrospect: Needs lore section. It's nice to see a reference to Planescape even if it's a bit obscure for some newer players. Really, that's up to the DM to incorporate it in his world. I've given enough basic information that anyone that tried to research them would have a fairly good idea of what they're about. I'm going to go ahead and assume (there goes that word again...) that the DM is going to change and tweak things a bit anyways to get it to fit into the campaign and world..

No problem about making up astral steel, although it would have been nice if you'd actually stated it. The only thing you actually wrote was this:

Astral Steel Exoskeleton (Ex): During its creation, the Clockwork Weaver becomes closely tied with the Astral Plane, giving it's part a bluish glow and unique qualities. The Clockwork Weaver gains Damage Reduction 20/- unless it is on the Astral Plane.

What unique qualities? I have no idea because you never mention it. DR 20/- isn't unique. The glow is nice fluff but you didn't back it up with any mechanics: bright as a torch? bright as candle?

Here are other samples of special materials:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialMaterials.htm

Debby

Sir Shadow
2009-01-19, 03:35 PM
Astral Steel Exoskeleton is a unique special quality of the creature. During the process of it's creation, the creature takes on this special quality. It has an intangible glowing layer that gives it DR 20/-. It glows. That's it. It doesn't give off any light. When you look at it, it appears to glow. It also gives DR 20/-. I'm not saying DR 20/- is unique, I'm saying the exoskeleton layer itself is unique!

It's not a special material! It's not even referring to anything really tangible! I could name it something else! Like Astral Bubble or something like that... What does any of this have to do with how the DM will use it? It glows blue. It doesn't give off any light. and it gives DR 20/- It's completely functional the way it is.

Debihuman
2009-01-19, 06:52 PM
I'm not saying DR 20/- is unique, I'm saying the exoskeleton layer itself is unique. It is clearer now.

I think CR is way too low. DR 20/-, Phase Armor and Recall combine to make this creature far more difficult than hit dice alone account for. Just giving it DR 20/- is pushing epic territory even though it is mitigated when on the Astral plane. However, since it is most likely to be found on the Astral plane, this seems backwards. Why should it be less powerful on its home plane? If anything, one would think it would be more powerful there.

One last thing: Caster Level is too low to cast the spells you have given it. Time Stop is a 9th level spell. Minimum CL is 17.

Edited for more Information:

Bisected: Plants get feats normally. It should have 3 feats and any bonus feats. The only creatures which do not get feats are those without Int. Having an Int of even 1 is enough.

Debby

Sir Shadow
2009-01-19, 08:56 PM
Doesn't Caster Level only determine things like range and damage? Since these are spell-like abilities, it shouldn't matter what level wizard or sorcerer spell they are.

TheLogman
2009-01-19, 09:20 PM
Actually, your monster has to have a CL that is at least the minimum level to cast their highest level spell. That's why it's strange to give one or two really high level spells to a monster, instead of a bunch and make it a spell caster. (Doesn't stop me though).

It also makes things difficult for say, Meteor Swarm. If my monster had a CL of 5, but he could use Meteor Swarm, his spells would be weaker than the spell usually is, which is strange.

DracoDei
2009-01-19, 09:23 PM
In which case they STILL determine things like range and damage, of course.

Also, look back through her conversation with me on the subject of breaking conventions/standards, if you didn't read it the first time through. It might or might not be helpful, but I think it is relevant.

Sir Shadow
2009-01-19, 09:32 PM
And besides, this is the minimum HD of the monster. Even if the example I give can't use the spell (which I'm not saying one way or the other, let the DM decide), higher HD ones will definitely be able to.

Debihuman
2009-01-19, 09:42 PM
Yes, it also determines range and damage but also how easily it can be dispelled. True, it doesn't HAVE to be at the same level that the creature would normally get, but you've given it a 10-level power creep. That's a lot considering the CR of the creature. That's not to say that giving out the spell is wrong in any way because it's an ideal spell, but I really think you should rethink the caster level and challenge rating and raise both to be more appropriate.

And I've mentioned this before about how to make monsters really good. Sure you can break the rules and stretch the limits of believability and so forth, but it doesn't do anyone any good if your creature winds up being totally unusable out of the box.

Just because a thing CAN be done, doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. What works and what works BEST aren't the same thing. Advancing creatures is alway possible, but if you are going to make a 7 HD monster, it should have abilities that are appropriate to it. That usually means showing more restraint.

DR 20/- isn't appropriate to a 7 hit dice monster; giving out 9th level spells at CL 7 isn't appropriate. If you really want to keep the challenge rating to 9, you need to see how far off those things are. The only place I've ever seen DR 20/- is with epic creatures. Look at dragons to see when they get DR 20 and it's not until they have a lot of hit dice.

Can you do those things? Of course, you can.

However, CR is off no matter how you slice it. CR probably closer to 15 or 16. CR 16 with 7 HD isn't really a well-designed creature. It's good uber special abilities without the HD to back those up.

Sometimes that's done on purpose like the Grandfather but most of the time, it means TPK until it's a cakewalk to defeat without there being a middle ground that makes for a good encounter.

BTW, is Recall (sp) or (su)? You didn't mention it. Time slip probably shouldn't be (ex) because it is based on the spell; (su) would be more appropriate.

Thyme:
Even a single toxic berry would be a magic item worth hundreds if not thousands of gp, they allow escape from a multitude of deadly situations. Especially for adventurers, since (especially in a metagame sense) they rarely face challenges that can destroy them all, so individual members having an emergency escape that depends on the rest of them being able to hold a position for 1d6 hours is going to be a very minor thing in many (but hardly all) cases. I assume the Dazed effect lasts 1 round (you never said)? If so it is a very very small drawback to the berries when considered as a magic item.

EDIT:
Revisions (now that I feel motivated, partially by the critiques I have gotten) on the Words continue, I made "Word" a sub-type to avoid repeating myself too much. Skills should also be done (in theory).

Bisected-- your plant still should have the appropriate number of feats for its hit dice. I mentioned that earlier. As long as it has an Int, it gains feats normally. It should have 3 feats. Only creatures with Int - don't gain feats.

You should state how long the berries keep before they are spoiled. Probably no more than a week. This prevents them from becoming too reliable. Also, I agree that the gp value is a bit low. Jumping into the future for 1d6 hours is a really long time in game terms, you should reconsider changing this to 1d6 minutes or even rounds.

Temporal fruit should be a supernatural ability, rooted and camouflage would be extraordiary abilities.

Personally I can't see minutes working for the stated purpose, and rounds are right out...

1d6x10 minutes?

Note that that actually makes them BETTER tools for the PCs in most cases for an individual escaping a battle.

Debihuman
2009-01-20, 01:58 PM
Since anyone eating the berries goes forward in time but rematerializes where she or he started, it's not as useful as you might think. How much can they accomplish in the time allotted? 1d6 rounds is long enough to down a potion, grab a weapon or whatever. 1d6 minutes would allow someone to search for secret doors and do a little reconnaissance. More than that, and any sense of urgency or timing can be thwarted. Furthermore, PCs can do a lot of damage when they think that the consequences won't really matter. As a DM, I know that the consequences should always matter.

Considering making The First Word female, just to make the the dichomtomy(sp) even more strong. Another advantage would be that having further unique characters be the child of these two is almost as good a character excuse as "illegitimate son of Zeus", and could go in as many interesting directions. One drawback is that some people might assume it to be some sort of commentary on the Male/Female conversational dynamic, which, despite the fact that they are called "Word"s they are not and most decidedly would not be.

Sir Shadow

@ Debbi

1) They won't be able to HURT anybody once the use Time Stop, since they have no spells that can do it, and physical attacks won't cut it. Time Stop becomes purely a battle-field control spell or an escape.

2) When they use Time Lapse, they (or anybody else for that matter) won't be able to hurt the creature effected. Also, the reason it is Ex is because it is BASED on the spell. It doesn't cast the spell when it hits, it just has the effects of the spell with the noted differences.

3) their only offensive capability is their slam attack, and once they hit Time Lapse goes off, so they probably won't get more than one attack on one opponent per round.

4) HD 7 is the lowest, look at their progression, they go into epic levels.

5) The monsters aren't hostile, even when provoked they will run. And when they do attack, they're pretty much only an annoyance.

6) One thing I'll concede, however, is that DR 20 may be too high, but they will usually be encountered on the Astral Plane where it has no effect. The DR 20 is for when it is summoned so it won't be beaten to a pulp. But like I said, it may be too high, I'll think about it.

7) Ultimately it depends on the DM's choices, they can do what they want with what I create, I'm just giving them the idea.

Trust me, I have actually given thought to this monster, I didn't just throw skills together hodge-podge.

DracoDei
2009-01-20, 11:40 PM
One thing I have seen on a very few monsters is splitting CR up so that you list two different ones based on a variable. Usually this is some variation in the monster (Satyr with/without pipes or some such), but in at least one case I have seen it as a variation based on the terrain the creature is encountered in (shallow river, vs deep lake or some such). You might consider "On Astral Plane"/"On any other Plane" in this case since it is such a big change.

Bisected8

Sir Shadow, if an ability mimics a spell (doesn't have to cast it) , it is not a non-magical ability and thus is either supernatural or spell-like. See Special Abilities in SRD here:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#naturalAbilities.

If is has the effects of a spell, it's spell-like or supernatural not extraordinary. So yes, if you are basing an ability on a spell, then the effect is either spell-like or supernatural.

Secondly the number of hit dice and attacks weren't in question. Both of of those were well done. Nor did I mention advancement, but I should have because it should increase in size when it doubles its HD. That's fairly standard, so technically it would be: 8-14 (Large), 15-21 (Huge). That's a minor quibble.

I merely pointed out, that in a combat, regardless of the creature's temporal stasis effect, Recall, Phase Armor and the Astral Steel Exoskeleton taken together make it nearly impossible for a party of the appropriate level to HIT. Sure, the creature will slam and then wait for [I]temporal stais to end and then slam again. It's going to be a very prolonged battle....

Number 6 was my first beef. Frankly, it makes more sense for a creature like this to have Damage Reduction based on its hit dice. In that case, the creature would have DR 7/- [and the most advanced epic version would have DR 21/-]. DR 7/- for a CR 10 is fine. DR 20/- for CR 10 isn't.

My second beef, was your low Caster Level for tiime stop. It is 10 levels off. I don't have a problem with your choice of spells, only with the caster level.

The monsters aren't hostile, even when provoked they will run. And when they do attack, they're pretty much only an annoyance.
If that was your goal for these creatures, it might have been helpful if you had stated it up front. Also, for creatures that won't take a lot of damage, they're fairly cowardly if they run away when they are provoked.

While I have nothing against 4e itself, I have no experience in homebrewing with it. Plus, 3e has an online SRD, so no need to sit with three books in front of the computer. So I prefer 3.5e, possibly with a 4e contest as a separate enterprise.

Also, competition!

Personally I don't like 4E and since I don't have the books it would be hard to make stuff for it... BUT all that pales in comparison to the hatred I have for it because they didn't run it as a parallel line to 3.5 (4E for munchkin control and the more casual gamers, 3.5 for the more creative types who LIKE a sometimes bewildering array of options and combination) BUT MOST OF ALL because of the way they (tried to?) kept third party publishers from going going both ways. So on ethical grounds I must say please please don't do a 4E contest. It might be fun for the participants, but I would find it a fall from awesome and goodness on the part of your deadly fluffiness Sir Tribble.

Tends to come back in a slightly different location as an incorporeal deathless (complete with deathless inhabitants in the pocket dimension) if destroyed, unless a succubus, incubus, or other such creature (probably Called in for the purpose) performs a depraved ritual involving the sexualized murders of at least three sapient beings. Yes, this bastion of True Love can only be defeated by sadism and snuff...

So, any suggestions on the idea?

Two major tricky spots come to mind with this thing...
1.) The advancent starts at Small and goes to Colossal, so I am wondering if a single advancement line is really the way to go, or if I ought to split it up into a table, the way monstrous scorpions, spiders, centipedes, and the four basic elementals are. It gets a FEW new abilities as it gains HD, but mostly of the "natural weapons now count as magic for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction" type.
2.) The inhabitants of the pocket-dimension (if any) can take control of some of its limbs to grant it extra attacks at their own BABs and number of attacks, and/or to cast spells. This makes the formula for increasing its CR rather tricky... consider the case of a Small 2 HD playing host to a Young Adult copper(male)/bronze(female) pairing, both with the multi-attack feat...
Full attack: Thorney slams +19/+18/+17/+17/+17/+17/+17/+16/+16/+16/+16/+16/+3/+3 melee (1d4+1) OR Launch Major Thorns +18/+17/+16/+16/+16/+16/+16/+15/+15/+15/+15/+15/+5/+5 Ranged (1d4+1 Range Increment 40 max range 400)
.
.
.
Maybe I should only give each inhabitant the ability to make one attack per round? OTOH a 3' tall piece of landscaping that can make more attacks per round than an Epic Level Monk with Haste may cross the line from "way to much of a glass cannon" into Rule of Cool...

i'm throwing my vote in a little late, siding with the overwhelming approval of sticking with 3.5.

that said, if you wanted to run a concurrent 4th ed contest--or recruit someone to run it for you--i don't think anyone would mind. i doubt it would get the same amount of participation, but...

and afroakuma, if you can't find your dreamgirl/boy to take on a valentine's date, then none of us would make fun of you for statting her/him up for the contest.

Well, I have posted the first draft... the history is the only thing I would call "complete" here... the stat-blocks needs a bunch more abilities added, but other than that should be MOSTLY done I think... the actual ability descriptions are almost entirely missing.

See my above post for more information and some questions I have.

Note that IF I have time I will be including finishing up the template for the children born of unions inside the tree who grow as half-plant creatures from the side of the trunk, separating at hatching/weening to be raised by vine and telepathy and perhaps the occasional nymph nanny or some such... if I can't finish it before the deadline I will remove it.

EDIT:
More thoughts on Vaincloak
Even a level 1 fighter with an Energy Draining attack that does 2 negative levels sounds like more than a CR 3, and the idea of it dropping 4 CRs by bonding with a host seems off, although technically there is nothing wrong with the idea of a creature working that way.

100 feet is a more traditional telepathy range in 3.X if I remember correctly... any particular reason you picked 90?

I know it makes a difference for the save DC but it might be better to just call a spade a spade and change Dominate Person to Dominate Monster. Also note that in either case, the duration is measured in days and the general consensus I have heard is that the caster can order the target to fail their save against a re-casting to extend the duration. Thus the chances of a victim falling out of control while bonded with is very small.

I have been trying to decide whether to mention this to the folks at Victorious Press basically ever since they came into existence... guess I will take the plunge now... (and not half-heartedly either):

Well, no golem, but soon after I had created my Empty Skins (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44544) someone did say to me that "You realize you have created the necromantic 'inflate-a-date'?", which is a fair point. I think it rather works out in their favor since the option of placing one (or more... why not the vampire's whole harem?) in that role and leading the PCs to that conclusion can be played for creepiness, disgust (more "must die die DIE!" points for the villian who has such para-necrophilic* relations) or even humor (dorm room shenanigans at Sigil Prep perhaps?). The problem is that none of this should be allowed to detract in the least from the other excellent (if I do say so myself) uses of that template...

*Can someone come up with a better term for sex with the undead?

P.S. The Victorious Press forums seem to be down... Found it here (http://victoriouspress.com/forum/index.php) but the link on Fax's main page is still a loop-back...

Besides, being smaller makes it cuter ^_^ (I toyed with the idea of it making a purring noise occasionally; I may just give it that ability back)

Well, I had intended for the sharing of spells to be optional in the first place, but apparently it didn't get worded right. I'll get on that.

More precise details on how someone who HASN'T seen her goes about contacting the mother of teeth would be nice.

You also have an error in the lore section. You say she gets let out for a day, but even if the sacrifices all average 10 CON (which is the most likely case if victems are selected for for their ease of capture or beauty or something) and the minimum number of sacrifices are performed, then that means 120 hours, or 5 days. Although technically this is JUST the sort of dangerous mistake that incomplete information contains, I still suspect this is a typo, and if it isn't you should specifically point that out (in a footnote probably), and include the CORRECT information at the highest level of information in the Lore section.

Since everyone seems to forget how to figure out the appropriate lore DCs, I thought I'd post a reminder. From the SRD:

In general, the DC of such a knowledge check equals 10 + the monster’s HD. A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster.

For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information.

Since the vaincloak has 5 HD, the DC checks would be at 15, 20, 25 and 30.

Since the mother of teeth has 50 the normal DC would be 55, 60, 65, etc. However, this does seem excessive even for an epic creature so dropping it down some makes sense.

The sample bower would be DC 12, DC 17, DC 22.

Thanks for the reminder. I actually know the formula, there is a specific reason I am violating it that I need to explain in the opening paragraph...
Basically, for the upper level stuff the formula gives a perfectly appropriate DC, and if I have some reason to cause it to shift a few points either way, then so what? The problem with using the formula is that Devotion Bowers can look like almost any kind of tree (although there are certain clues what with the thorns and the mix of vines and branches), and often disguise themselves to avoid unwanted attentions from angry parents etc. Thus recognizing one in the first place is rather hard, but once you realize the species, the lore that goes with the name isn't that obscure.

Have made some noticable additions in moving the work toward completion. It turns out the clarification that Debihuman had "reminded" me to make was already in place (or I am pretty sure it was... in any case it is definitely there now), but I added underlining for emphasis since it was obviously easy to miss.

The most recent updates I typed up MOSTLY concerned the "Lover's Rescue" and "Lover's Paradise" sections for the devotion bower (the cut and paste for the example undying devotion is way behind but I will probably save that later).

might have aleady been answered somewhere, but are templates fair game for the contest? so long as they use a stat block and follow the other formatting rules, they are still unique creations.

reasoning: i could create a monster that was inspired by the chimera, but change some fluff, give it different kinds of heads, different attacks and strategies, and it would be a legal monster for the contest.

or i could create a template, slap it on to the chimera, and have it do the same thing, but also be applicable to other monsters. in the end, it accomplishes the same thing, and my current brainstorm works better as a template than as an actual, pre-statted monster.

No idea, but giving the "Typically prepared" listings is much more important than what is in her book.

And could I get some critique? Quite frankly I was worried there would be entries that would push the envelop of explicitness more than mine and had amped mine up just a bit to mine to make it fit the contest parameters a bit better and to make it so we didn't have something like the houri someone posted a while back('good' aligned outsider that sleeps with people as a reward for great deeds or some such... WHAT?! Ok, so it probably fits the mythos it comes from, but I still feel it worthy of a 'counter-argument'*) go "unanswered". Would the creature be improved by toning it back a little?

Trust me, I know that writing a really in-depth description of your creation feels awesome, but the amount of text that goes into the introduction, as well as the abilities of creatures with lower challenge ratings, makes your entry really inconvenient for a DM to use.

For the Incorporeal Subtype, a link to the SRD should suffice, but my overall suggestion would be to copy everything you've got, paste it into Word (or program of your choice), cull everything except the bare minimum, and then start re-posting most of the fluff. Pretend like it actually is going in a Monster Manual and is limited to no more than 3 pages.

It's not the writing itself, which is fine, just that the sheer amount of text is, well, intimidating :smalleek:

Thank you very much for your review. Ok, well:
1.) Just for the sake of arguement I will try to create a "short and quick" version that leaves out the history and all abilities that have no application in combat (which is most of them). Note that I have a suddenly painful knee that may distract me.
2.) Since this thing is very much NOT appropriate as a random encounter in my understanding, then giving a ton of info to help the integration into the campaign world would SEEM appropriate.
3.) What does the challenge rating have to do with it? I would hypothesize that "weaker" doesn't have to mean "less numerous or complex of abilities".
Am I missing something in your opinion? It is a bit harder to make low CR creatures into 5 round slug-fests, but 5 round tactical chess matches should be possible in theory (although that is NOT what this creature is built for)
4.) This actually points up an area where I didn't put ENOUGH information in... the 2HD version is NOT the most common, any more than 3 foot tall saplings outnumber 20 foot tall trees in most forests most of the time. I need ANOTHER footnote to explain this since the lowest HD version is not the most common. With higher HD it will get higher CR.

For the Incorporeal Subtype, a link to the SRD should suffice,
Seems to me spoiler makes it easy for the reader to skip if they like, and availible without switching tabs if they need it.

It's not the writing itself, which is fine, just that the sheer amount of text is, well, intimidating :smalleek:

Somehow missed this post up until this point... does it really call for ranks in Disguise when the resemblance is never likely to be perfect (unless their is something out there with the thorns/vines/branches mix I described?), and they most of them never change their basic "look" in there entire lifetime? Isn't a sabretooth a Dire tiger?Nope. The Dire Tiger's bite attack is secondary and it has the dumb "rake" attack that, in DnD, is standard for felines.

(Yes, cats kick their prey with their back feet to try and rip its guts open. No, they don't do it in the middle of combat; they pin it down first. And where is the choke bite to the neck that all living felids in fact use to kill their prey?)

As for strangulation: It takes too long in D&D unless you have some other way to model it than the standard suffocation rules... sounds like what they need is inmproved grab+"constrict" type mechancs for the throat bite and rake.A choke bite doesn't just suffocate the prey, it breaks the windpipe, usually tears the jugular or the carotid or both, and may snap the spine. Death happens pretty quickly.

Ironically, when a snake constricts its prey, death does indeed occur by suffocation. Snakes are nowhere near as vigorous as felines. They simply tighten when the prey exhales and refuse to loosen when it inhales. Repeatedly. And they wait.

Improved Crit./otherwise expanded critical range and/or multiplier? Perhaps situational on a pin (but grappling doesn't have crits...)... I dunno, something could be figured out.

I have just been really busy and/or lacking in energy. I have known what I was planning to post from the begining, but, quite frankly, I am not sure if I will find the strength. Also, as I originally imagined this creature, it undergoes a transformation that will be hard to explain away without magic to my total satisfaction, but only ONCE in its life. Catapillar to Butterfly thing, but I am not sure if I can justify it without magic, given the environment it lives in. Actually it has 3 life stages, but the first two are hard to even tell appart except by behavior and size. The third is where it goes from a snake to a very fast lizard.

I've had a horrible case of writer's block and have passed on entering this contest. Since I'm not working on my own creation, I'm more than willing to help anyone who asks. We have all helped each other in the past -- telling each when there mistakes in the stat block and reminding each other of obscure rules and so forth.

You can privage message me if you'd like or post your requests publicly. I'm here often enough.

Lucy, if your stats aren't coming out right it could be that you are missing something. Almost all the items in the statblock are number based, so having the appropriate HD and abilities will lay out all the groundwork.

Bhu: I have--I bugged Vorpal Tribble, in fact. :smallamused:

Bisected8: I tried that, but it doesn't really help out with stats. I'm not sure what I should or shouldn't be giving to this animal.

Debihuman: That could be it! I started off guessing at how many HD to give it, and that may be part of the problem (though abilitiy scores are also throwing me off).

I'm just not sure how strong/hardy a small-sized grazing quadruped would be (no, it's not a goat XD).

Just my two pence, but grazing animals tend to be heavily built or fast (burrowers or flying animals tend towards other food sources). Since its small I'm guessing it won't be the former, so give it low/medium con and str and good dex scores (an average stat score is 10 for a 1 HD creature). I'd also give it highish wisdom (as it would need to spot predators) and charisma would be up to you (if its a herd animal, as many grazers are, then make it high, to reflect how it interacts with others of its kind).

I'm on break for a few days, I might roll something up. I have a good idea of possible entries, I just have to narrow them down into something I can see myself using in a game.

EDIT: 2 days later, nobody else has posted. My Entry is up though. Fairly happy with it. Complex enough to be interesting, but yet simple enough a DM can run it with few problems (I hope).

Also, entries are a little sparse this month. Is it the holiday? Is it 4.0 catching up with us? The constant difficult to access this site? The contest theme? My constant questions? Should I just wait since the contest is only half way over?

I don't think it's a problem with the theme. I mean, you got three way different takes on the same theme.
