View Full Version : Star Wars Saga Edition: An Ultimate Fleet Interceptor

Ok, here is my idea for a swift short ranged interceptor. It is designed to escort large freighters or large capital ships that are more or less open to fighter attack by roving Pirates, Mercenaries or Rebels; but also to be a very solid and tough vehicle that can withstand quite a bit of punishment if necessary; and not amazingly expensive either.

The M-5 War Hound is a heavy interceptor designed by Venatton Industries and produced on an order by order basis. Venatton Industries is based on a small, verdant paradise world known as New Theed. New Theed is located on the Outer Rim, a world colonized by Imperial Loyalists. Venatton Industries was founded by a group of disaffected Kuat Drive Yards employees and never managed to compete with Incom or Sienar Fleet Systems for Starfighter contracts.

They mostly stayed afloat by producing spare I-7 Howlrunner and TIE Fighter parts while trying to sell as many War Hounds as they could to the Empire and other formal governments, but the designs torpedo tube and shields made it very unpopular with the Imperial Admiralty. However near the end of the Galactic Civil War the M-5 had a surge in orders as the Imperial Navy found themselves without the facilities to produce TIEs in great enough numbers; still they found themselves trailing the I-7 and other starfighters. They continued producing the design throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War only to be bought out by Yaga Minor's shipyards during the 2nd Galactic Civil War. This ended production of the War Hound as the factories began to churn out Star Hunters. The Corporate Sector sells a similar model however under license.

No comments? Criticisms? Ideas?

I like the idea and the fluff. The stats seem reasonable and balanced to me, but you can never know until you try it in game. If you don't mind me doing so, I might use this for a campaign of mine with all credit given to you of course.

Unfortunately it would seem to be outclassed by the TIE for cost effectiveness, and the X-wing for Quality.

I can still see it getting a bit of use in out of the way systems, for system patrol craft or escort duty on a small scale.

Still can't see it becoming terribly popular, though your fluff reflects this fairly well so it does at least fit.

I'd ditch the torpedoes for any sort of escort duty however... they really make it non-cost effective, especially for fighting off starfighters and general interceptor duty. That sort of payload is generally meant so you can punch a hole in something armored or make a capital ship at least notice you... which an interceptor has little use for. In fact it might work better if you replaced them with an ion canon or two.

I'd probably say it's the popular conversion to pull the launchers for extra armor or shielding or cargo for the pilot's gear allowing for longer patrols.

Still definately has a place at least, and certainly balanced stat wise. I might use this in my homebrew game as well.

Concussion Missiles are better suited for anti-fighter interception. It's also a bit lightly armed.

The reasons I chose Proton Torpedos is three fold:
1) Only 1 Emplacement point was left, unless I wanted to spend 5k credits on an extra.
2) I chose some form of missile weapon so that they could destroy a bomber before it could Intercept the Interceptor with a well placed missile or torpedo
3) So they can savage a heavily shielded Colossal sized Transport loaded to the gills with missiles and turbolasers, or Frigates if they need to.

Also, feel free to playtest this starfighter; I would love to see how they work out.
