The (Largely Ambiguous And Generally Followed According To Spirit Rather Than Letter) "Rules":
[hr]

Anyone who contributes to the project (whether or not their entry is accepted) is eligible for being a judge on a later entry. Any contributor will be given credit for their entry. Any artist will similarly be eligible for being a judge if they so desire, and regardless of judging capability will be given credit for ther assistance. Entering a creature assumes you are willing to have your work published in a compliation.
Any monster is eligible for entry: we only ask that it be in the old-format when the book is compiled.
We need between 100 and 150 monsters, so anyone who contributes has a reasonable chance of getting on board.
Vorpal Tribble has volunteered his services as an impartial judge, since he has stated he won't be submitting anything.
To vote, you may either post a comment on a monster up for approval with a statement clearly defining your opinion (such as "MitP Vote: Yes"). If you wish to remain anonymous, you may PM Fax_Celestis or [anyone else who volunteers to receive votes; as of now, none] with your vote and it will be counted as normal.
Judges cannot vote on their own creation, and at least seven votes must approve a creation for it to be inserted into the book.
A no vote is subtracted from the final total, so a creature with five Yes votes and three No votes is considered to have 2 votes total.
When complete, the compliation, entitled "Monsters in the Playground", will be uploaded to Lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com) and available for purchase for [as cheap a price as we can set it since we're not looking for profits]. Any profits that are made should probably go to GiantITP itself, since splitting it up between all contributors would be ghastly and difficult, while giving it to one person would be unfair. The book is being made because of the existence of GiantITP, so it's only fair that they receive the benefits.
Also, upon completion, the compliation will be available as a PDF for those who don't wish to purchase the final product. This PDF will be for free, although we'd prefer purchase of the book since it benefits the site that made all this possible.
If this goes well, we can later compile other books as well ("Prestige In The Playground", "Magic In The Playground", "Psionics In The Playground", etc.)

I'd like to submit this (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=homebrew;action=display;num=11553198 83), because it's perfect, even though it's not mine.

I'd be willing to volunteer. I'm active and I'm better at analysing whether a creature is cool and nifty than I am at creating the creature. Also, do we have to create a new thread, or do we have to post them here, or can we do either way? I'd just like to know where we are before I even consider submitting entries.

How are we picking the council? Volunteers, community poll dealie, or just a secret cabal form by FC? Also, how would being on the council affect submitting your own material? I have a sneaky suspicion council member's would have an easier time getting in than normies's. Apart from that, I'd be eager to work on this.

Yeah, you should probably pick 8 members, and randomly select who's on the board for that monster, unless it's a members monster. Then, they're the one booted off.

I won't be submitting any monsters to this for the time being, so I'm willing to help look over and judge monsters impartially.

Fax Celestis
2006-08-16, 02:25 PM
Well, we could go by making it so that anybody who wants to vote has to submit a monster. And, due to his admitted impartiality, we could volunteer VT to pick five judges for each monster.

So, if you've submitted a monster (whether or not it's approved), you're eligible to vote for a different monster.

That being said, we'll need a committee of say, seven people (like the Supreme Court) to approve what goes into the book and what doesn't.

Um... Fax? The Supreme Court has 9 members.

Love the idea, I might cook up a few monsters and try to get in on this, but I'm pretty sure I won't be that great of a choice for a judge. Aside from the fact of being relatively unknown on the forums, I generally don't have that much free time (thus explaining why I'm pretty much unknown on the forums).

I'm going to say that the first thing we need is not judges but rather some poor mook to be in charge of this silly project in an administrative fashion. Has anyone asked the Mods if one of them would like to oversee the project? Alternately, does Fax Celestis or Vorpal Tribble want to do it?

As I see it, we need more than one thread to have this run efficiently - a temporary thread to start where judges can volunteer and be voted on (I recommend an odd number of main judges plus a 'swing' judge if one of the judges wants to submit one of their own creations) should be the first priority.

Next would probably be one or several creature submission threads; if I were administrating I would probably set up low, medium, and high-CR monster threads.

There should definitely be a standardized submission format to make things easier on the judges - if people have seen the MM4 format, I sort of recommend that as being a good way to make things playable and evaluate CR.

A side project people might be interested in would be to make a generic party of four characters and to have people tactically playtest some of these monsters, to make sure CR is accurate and to maybe suggest tweaks to one ability or another - save DCs on poisons, for example.

Any more administrative suggestions?

Well, I think that for submissions, monsters should be presented in the old format, as seen in the MM1. Monsters-in-progress are easier to see that way, as are any math errors. However, when the time comes for the final presentation, I would recommend converting to the new format, because the organization of the new blocks greatly facilitates gameplay, and gameplay is, after all, a large part of why we're doing this.

Oh yeah, and actually I'm pretty sure all 9 Justices rule on everything. Not that it has anything to do with this thread.

Here's the rundown:

Judges cannot vote on their own creation, and at least five judges must approve a creation for it to be inserted into the book.

For first submission, I will submit one of my own creatures: the Toveaxdirupetara (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1152326251 ;start=0#0). However, according to what I've said above, that'd mean I'm the only person eligible to vote on this, a thought that is patently ridiculous. Therefore: voting will commence when at least four more people have entered creatures.

Did some research. According to this (http://www.lulu.com/includes/calc_book_inc.php), a color hardcover 8.25 x 10.75 book without jacket (that is to say, pretty much like all D&D books) with 125 pages (approx. 110-115 monsters + table of contents + author's page + index) comes out to about $36. That's about the cost of a WotC D&D book.

We could cut down the cost to $24 if we did it color softcover.

Comments?

Go soft-cover.

How about this? Release smaller volmes in paperback, and then when we've got a bunch out, release a compendium with bonus monsters and appendices! It (meaning exploitation of marketing strategies) works for Wizards, why not for us?

We aren't as well known as Wizards, that's why. It is just better to make one copy of the book, and not follow it up with a bonus version. We won't sell more books with the bonus version. It just won't work.

Just because you're not that pretty to look at doesn't mean you get to be in a book of monsters.

(I'm unsure whether or not this comes across as joking, so here's a qualifier)

If you're submitting the 'Child of Passion' template, keep in mind that all the dirty-minded geeks will be skipping right ahead to it, so you'd be representing the book as a whole much as a front cover would. Do you really want that burden?

Id like to suggest that we need less than 9 votes, since of the 22 contributors, you must convince aproximately half of them that your creature is good, and there is no guarantee that everyone will see every monster. I would suggest 7 votes, since not including the creator that means that 1/3 of the voters must say yes. SInce several people do not post on standard US time zones, they may miss some stuff that gets buried too early for them to notice, and you can't guarantee that everyone will read the compiliation on page one every day.

asromta

I think that is right, there are just too few things that reach the 9 votes. Even if they only get 'yes' votes the chance that 9 people vote on 1 topic is just too slim.

Or you must force everone to vote on every creature, to make sure each creature is voted often enough on.

I was just thinking of something about future entries. I think a good idea (not a requirement, just an idea) would be to put something like [Creature, MitP] in front of the topic we put created creatures in. That might make it a bit easier for people to find newcomers before Fax Celestis comes on, and so we don't have to come back here every time to see which new monsters are in the running for the book.

Another idea is to put a MitP link at the bottom of the entries. This isn't really that big of an idea, but might get people that aren't that interested in the project to pay some more attention to it. You never know, we might get some more authors out of it.

I'm going to have to disagree. Not to disparage the Giant of his art style, but the feel of many of the book's monsters would be somewhat diminished if they had stick figure artwork. I can just imagine what a stick figure Darkwomb Mother would look like, and it makes me chuckle. Chuckling should not be the response garnered by many of the monsters submitted.

To be honest, I PMed Fax a "no" vote rather than post it in the thread because I felt bad about having to prevent someone's hard work from getting into MitP, even though I thought it didn't belong. That is to say, I sympathize with the plight of the creator.

To be honest, I PMed Fax a "no" vote rather than post it in the thread because I felt bad about having to prevent someone's hard work from getting into MitP, even though I thought it didn't belong. That is to say, I sympathize with the plight of the creator.

I would rather get a no vote right out in person. I want to know what the problem is with the monster so I can fix it. I won't hold it agianst anyone if they vote no.

On a side note, the list for monsters is getting longer and longer... and monsters that have been up there for a long time *cough* Gruarru! *cough* seem to be getting ignored. Just though I'd point that out.

I will be doing, but there's a bunch of refining on the ones I've posted too, so I might be a little lax in getting the votes done

That actually brings up a point; for some monsters I'd feel obligated to vote no due to what I see (whether true or not) as flaws, and potentially amend that vote if the flaws were resolved, balanced or re-worded to make them clearer. Is there a process for changing a vote? i.e. Does Fax maintain a list not just of what the votes are, but of who made which so they can be reversed where appropriate?

You know what I think? I think that once we've chosen all of our monsters at the end, we should get five guys to volunteer to test their CRs. A basic iconic party of fighter/rogue/wizard/cleric, using only stuff in the core 3 books, and a DM to run the monster in a fair and balanced manner. Test each monster out and decide if the CR is truly accurate.

Yep, which is why I said volunteer. Gotta find some people with WAY TOO MUCH TIME on their hands. It's not like they'd need any character development. I'd say just start with a generic 1st level character then level it up once 19 times or so, maybe a little higher if we get epic monsters. ;)

I agree in general terms (though D1 does have that CR 40 Queen too) that we need to do at least some virtual playtesting, but I have to ask...

Just how generic can you make a level 20 cleric/sorc/wizard? (cos there're a fair few big-CRs there too)

If you don't know the characters intimately, there's a wealth of options you might miss. Things like elemental barriers, divinations to prepare for the fight, all manner of things which can make the fight go from impossible to a cakewalk. Consider a level 25 party with no elemental immunity going up against the same ancient red (breath weapon average was, according to the DM, roughly 120 damage per breath) we trounced at 21; they'd have it fed to them. Granted there's not a LOT of character development involved, since much will be common - but there almost has to be at least a little.

What might be more useful is some slightly different statistical metrics; given a balanced party work out melee damage per round for a fighter and rogue, arcane damage and damage mitigated per round for a wizard or sorc, damage mitigated per round and (usually) physical damage dealt by the cleric, and aggregate damage dealt per round by the critter, broken down by type. At a given level you can assume more or less book values on resists and reductions, so that tells you what an average round will entail and whether it's appropriate for a party that level. It's potentially a fair bunch of calculation but far less real time spent overall - while it may not tell 100% of the story, it should hit the high 90s.

I think we'd want several playtest groups, possibly live playtesting, too (getting one volunteer and an RL group, rather than a bunch of boards volunteers).

Also, playtesting may not result in accurate CRs. A well-built wizard is obscenely powerful for his level, even if you go as low as level 7.

Wow, what a cool project.

It took me a while to find it though... this thread had slipped off the first page, and I couldn't find any kind of announcement. Or links to this thread from the first three or four submitted MitP threads I looked in that were on the first page.

Someone earlier in this thread suggested submissions should link back to this thread. I agree. I further suggest that if you've already made MitP submissions, you go back and edit the top post and add a link to this thread!

Anyway - I'd like to contribute. I have an interest in creating some very low-CR creatures (as a DM, I never have enough 'werird, magical, background critters' available). The D&D ecology is too top-predator-heavy... the majority of prey animals are ordinary Animals, lacking the weirdness and magic that the more powerful beasties have.

Would anyone object to my throwing in a few CR1/8 to CR1 critters?

Unless someone has voted against it, Vereor should have 1 yes vote (mine).

Actually I have a request: if there are both Yes and No votes, please provide both totals, rather than just the resulting sum. (E.g., if 3 yes and 1 no, provide "3 Yes, 1 No, total 2" rather than just "2 Yes").

Thanks

the Pygmy template I submitted has been renamed the Wildruner template (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=homebrew;action=display;num=11570596 71), to avoid racial stereotyping and to facilitate polotical correctness for the publishing.

Someone suggested I submit this here. It's really more a player option than a monster, like tieflings.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've had e-tools for a few years now and I have created a lot of monsters on there. When I get home I'll weed through some of them and post them as entries. Once you post an entry, you're supposed to go through and judge the other entries yes?

I'd like to second this request, the votes can still be anonymous if they are Pm'ed, but it would be nice to know the number of each type of vote, so the creator can check your math, since even though you are doing a great job at this, you are only human, and we are all ering creatures. Plus, I for one, am always cecking the number of votes my creaure has, and would really like to know ther breakdown.

Hey, Fax, did the rule change to seven votes?

The rule was changed to seven votes here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=homebrew;action=display;num=11557461 87;start=105) but I don't think Fax ever changed it on the front page, but yes, as it stands it is seven votes.

@^ You should link to it....
