Elisan:

"Kobolds!!"

The words itself arouse you from your sleep quickly.

"They've surrounded us!"

You stumble slightly in the wagon, trying to get your feet as soon as possible as the wagon lurches to a halt. You hear the sounds of arrows landing into the side of the wagon as you make your way to the opening in the rear. Emerging, you find the battle ground spread too thin, already.

Looking about quickly, you see several kobolds emerging from behind the large boulders scattered along the rise in the road, they jaws clicking out sounds in their language. Obviously this was a trap they had set. You count 8 kobolds as they flood the road around you and the caravan you were hired to. Perhaps it was too much ask for a nice, peaceful day today.

Everyone else:

The early morning dew was beginning to disappear on the leaves of the foliage around you as you walk along the road to Winterhaven. The crisp spring air was fresh, and taking in deep breathes awakens you. Pausing just a moment to take in the site and sounds, your ears perk up at an old familiar sound.

Somewhere in the distance ahead, you catch the sound of battle; the metal on metal crash; screams from a child and its mother; and one hauntingly familiar word:

Kobolds!!"

Brandis

Brandis makes his way to the near by road, having made a simple camp the night before a mile or so east of Winterhaven. Hearing the sounds of battle somewhere ahead of him, he rushed though the trees, finding it a more direct rout than the winding path that had laid before him. And here I thought civilized life would be more... 'civil' he chuckles to himself as he runs though the trees.

Once he makes it to the edge of the woods [or at least able to see the battle] he draws his bow and notches an arrow ready to fire.

Haven

A young wizard, she being a slim, delicate thing by the name of Haven Francis, walked slowly along the road to Winterhaven, using her staff to try and take some of the weight off of her sore feet. Though she had only been walking a short while, already she was more than ready for a break. She paused by a rounded stone at the side of the road, sitting down gingerly and folding her legs, then laying her smooth, wooden staff across her lap. She pulled her long, draping sleeves back from her hands and with a flick of her wrist sent the dust on her sandals, which laced up almost to her knees, in a small cloud back to the road where it had come from. She hissed quietly as she kneaded the ache out of her poor feet, which had received more than their fair share of use in the last few days. Now she wished that she had taken the effort to learn one of the various spells for summoning magical mounts to do the walking for her-- how handy that would be now!

Of course, after a few moments of thought, she decided that even if she did know how to call such a steed, she had no idea how to ride one... Presumably one was to sit on the back, but beyond that she was clueless. And besides, weren't such creatures usually rather... large? Haven made a hesitant face at the thought of losing her grip and falling off. Maybe even at full gallop. ...Perhaps sore feet weren't so bad after all. At any rate they weren't as sore as they had been a moment ago, and that was good.

Haven reached for her spellbook, which had been tucked into her sash, and opened it on her lap, knowing that it would fall open the the right page--

"Kobolds!!"

The call was distant, but its message was rather clear. Haven sat up, now alert, straining to hear off into the distance. She was rewarded by the clash of metal on metal, which was as sure an indicator of what lay ahead as the continued shouts of alarm. Haven lept from the stone, in one movement tying her spellbook back to her sash by its bookmark, and hurried toward the sounds, sore feet forgotten. Kobolds, Haven knew*, were nasty, humanoid reptilian creatures who held little love for anything warm-blooded. It was odd, though... did Kobolds usually come outside of their cave homes? And during the day no less? Once getting close to being within eyesight, Haven paused and gripped her staff, chanting softly and weaving together a magical covering** that would blend her already slender figure back into the early-morning scenery behind in order to protect her from enemy eyes. Once the spell was complete, she moved forward cautiously, remaining alert*** and trying to assess the situation as quickly as she could...

Kellen

Kellen curses under his breath. He'd been shadowing this caravan for a day, and was looking forward to swiping some coins, goods, or at least food. With this attack by kobolds, they'd be far more wary. Then again, if he intervened and killed a few of the scaly monsters, they might be thankful and he could earn some of that gold.

Drawing one of the daggers he has secreted around his body and his sling, the halfling loads a stone and swings it slowly, sneaking up on the scene.

Merri

With but a single gold piece left to her name, Merri needed money badly to start a new life and to fulfill her dream. Giving a deep sigh as she breathed in the fresh air of the open road, she realized that she was now truly free to make her own choices, to decide her own fate. She was also alone once again, without the guidance or protection of another.

No time for silly thoughts now, once you left home the decision was made!

Occasionally she passed others on the road, wondering what life would be like if she continued on the same way. No family, no friends, only sadness and loneliness. It was then that she heard a shrill cry in her sharp ears.

"Kobolds!!"

Not her business was her first instinct...but those people, calling out for help, somewhere they had a family. A family that they might never see again. Remembering a past from over a half a century, a rage built up as the eladrin's face and ears became flushed with blood. With that, Merriela Llirrodel took off towards the commotion, resolved to do something, anything to protect that woman and child.

Baern Halfhand

Baern strolls down the road, munching on a strip of jerky and admiring the countryside. He was beginning to enjoy the sun. It no longer burned his eyes and skin like it had when he first started his travels. The day appeared to be a perfectly beautiful one, with no obstacles in sight between him and Winterhaven.

He sensed the trouble before he heard the shouts. A twitch of the beard, the way the birds had all flown away at once (he'd learned quickly to pay attention to the birds, they knew when trouble was around), both preceded the panicked shouts and screams of "Kobolds!"

Kobolds?

Stuffing the rest of the jerky into his mouth, Baern grabs his hammer and shield and hustles to join the fray.

Elisan quickly checked to make certian his mace was still attached to his belt. He grabbed his longbow and the quiver full of arrows sitting next to it. He slung the quiver over one shoulder and jumped off the wagon. "Avandra protect us," he muttered under his breath as he looked around in the bright morning sunlight at the sight of several kobolds attacking his caravan.

The elf stands just under 6' tall. He has square features and mossy blonde hair that extends to the tops of his shoulders. He has emerald green eyes that sparkle in the sunlight. He wears hide armor with a ornately carved wooden holy symbol around his neck.

Elisan - Stepping out of the wagon, you look about to see the kobolds attacking. The front of the wagon seems to have taken the most damage, as the driver and two guards fall to the ground with mortal wounds. The owner of the wagon, and the last remaining guard are on either side of you, trying to fend off the flanking kobolds, but a sinking feeling lurks its way into your stomach.

et. all - As you each follow the cry of distress, you can hear the sounds of battle ensuing. The closer you get, the easier it is to see the wagon being surrounded by kobolds. The battle ground is already stained red with the blood of the guards and the driver on the front side of the caravan, but there does seem to be some hope for the remaining guards in the rear. An elf and two humans seem more prepared for the surprise attack from the kobolds, but even their predominate prowess seems teetering on the verge of collapse.

For the might and beauty of Avandra, you, Kobold, are dead... he speaks as he faces off against the puny reptile. Taking the kobold in his sight and drawing back his bow, Brandis waits for the stupid creature to make an opening in its defenses before firing.
Seeming to almost follow his arrow to the target Brandis dashes over the the kobold dropping his bow and drawing his two swords in one seemingly effortless movement.

Haven

Haven watched for only a moment to observe the combat. She took a sharp breath, looked away quickly and closed her eyes when her gaze came to rest on the bodies of those already fallen, but she pushed past it with an innocent determination to save the remaining living.

Hoping to remain hidden, Haven skirted around the trees that she had used as cover when approaching the scene and a bit closer to it, pausing behind a large rock that she decided to use as cover. She did not know very many spells that were useful in combat, but she was eager to apply whatever she did know as effectively as she could. Spotting a cluster of kobolds ahead, Haven gripped her staff and began whispering the words of power for a spell. A blue haze gathered around her hands as she spoke, and then as she gestured forward both patches rushed forward alongside each other. As they arrived at the intended target of her spell, the two bits collided with each other, instantly reacting with a sound like a powerful wind, and after a moment more instantly expanded to envelop her targets in a flurry of dashing winds. Invisible slashes of Force and wind battered the three kobolds that found themselves in its area.

Satisfied with the success of her casting, she ducked back behind the rock and hoped to remain unnoticed for as long as she could while thinking through her next spell...

As Merri moves through the brush into the clearing, she sees the cause of commotion as the kobolds have waylaid a wagon. Drawing her sword from it's scabbard, she dashes into the fray at the closest kobold. Planting her foot as she reaches the reptilian, she slides in the dust and pebbles while reaching back. With a scream she stabs forward, wounding the creature.

Merri
You reach full stride before pulling up short and sliding the last few inches, spraying the kobolds back. It shrieks as your blade digs into its back, causing it to stiffen immediately, then fall forward dead as you pull your sword back. Having sufficiently drawn the surrounding kobolds' attention, you can now hear their chattering jaws surprised and alert.

Haven
Your concentration pays off as the flow of magic rushes through your body. You open your eyes to see the traces of magic swirling about in the intended target area. Two of the kobolds carefully defend themselves as the magic encircles them. The kobold farthest away from you, though, you see take three quick jolts from different angles, spinning its body around before it collapses to its knees. The thump of its head on the ground reassures the thought of it not getting back up.

Brandis
Your eye focuses in on the kobold while it loads its sling, as it does not seem to notice you in its peripheral vision. The kobold did however hear the twang of your bow as you sent it flying towards its neck. It barely has time to turn its head to catch the arrow just below its jaw line. Another kobold shrieks in the spring wind, though its own blood gurgles as it, too, falls to the ground lifeless.

Elisan
Springing to the top of the wagon, you gain your footing easily and call to the heavens. The rush of divine energy fills your body with a slight warmth right before the kobold erupts in flames. You notice the kobold merely shake off the attack, though, unlike the kobolds surrounding you with the sudden appearance of a number of guess along the road. Steaming near the wagon wheel, the kobold hisses as it draws grips tighter to a large shield

Kellen
You watch as the kobold slinger falls to hand of the distant fighter's bow as you move into position. Darting up from your concealment, your movement startles the kobold, and as it spins to head to greet your targeted eyes, the daggers spins one lat time to catch the kobolds throat. Its eyes widen quickly, and both hands grip its throat -dropping the rusted sword in its hand. Quickly bleeding out, the kobold doubles over, staining the ground with its blackened blood.

Baern
Your words startle the kobolds as they looked a the attack of invisible blades around them. Your hammer catches the first kobold just about the shoulder, crushing its bone structure, and sending it to the ground deformed and unconscious.

Seemingly rejuvenated by your presence, the remaining human guard attempts to mount an assault against the two heavier armored kobolds on him (closest to the wagon), though his weak attacks simply bounce off of their armor.

Chattering loudly to one another*, the two kobolds strike back. Still flanking the guard makes their blows all the more vicious. Taking turns, they fill the man with their blades repeatedly, before stopping to turn toward the wooded area to the South in an attempt to flee. (gain cover from trees)

The kobold on you, Baern tries to do the same as his colleagues. Its spear misses wide, though, and you see an opportunity to attack as the creature turns to run along behind its companions. Your hammer, once again, catches the kobold along the neck line, snapping it easily under the weight.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the attack on the caravan successfully thwarted, you see the remaining lizard-kin fleeing into the wooded area. The thought quickly springs to mind of pursuit, and then followed by the thought of the wounded/dead that litter the road.

You said that the Kobolds fled South into the trees, that would mean toward Haven, yes? Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll edit accordingly.

Haven

Haven's eyes widened as she saw the kobolds beginning to break and run... Right toward her. She had time for half of a gasp as she ducked behind her rock cover, pulling her staff in close and trying to keep it from sticking out over or to either side, giving her away. She couldn't breathe as the reptilian creatures routed to either side of her hiding spot-- one even leapt right over the rock, and mere feet above her head--but in a spot of good luck none of the filthy creatures so much as looked around as they continued their panicked flight. She sat there for a little while and watched the last tips of the scaly tails disappear into the forest in the short distance, a weird expression of "Oh... ok...?" on her face. After a few moments more she stood up, dusted off the magically un-stain-able white cloak that draped over her shoulders, cleared her throat, gripped her staff, and turned to the caravan that she just provided minor assistance in rescuing. Oh, yeah... the people...

She swallowed quickly, and made as though to walk forward toward the caravan-- but aborted the attempt almost before it began, and then circled indecisively for a moment. Perhaps... I could just continue on my way? There were others that came to help, and surely among them they will find enough assistance to treat the wounded and get the wagon to town without my interfering... I should just go on ahead, a good deed is its own reward... right? But somehow the road ahead of the caravan on the way into Winterhaven looked very lonely all of a sudden. Haven tried a little more to argue herself one way or the other, but then found herself walking, even if not over-eagerly, toward the caravan and the small group of people that now gathered around it. She might still be able to help, she thought, in whatever small way they could find for her, and too there was a tinge of curiosity in the lore-loving young woman that quietly, but powerfully urged that she go talk to them just to see what would happen if she did.

Haven arrived at the wagon from her quite close-by perch in only a few minutes time, a good pace all things considering, and stood trying not to appear awkward or as unsure of herself as she felt. She drifted over to where everyone seemed to be gathering, though she did hang back to the edges of the group, and stayed quiet. She felt as though she should say... something, but she wasn't at all sure what to say. And every time she thought to try someone else would interject with something that was actually important, and Haven would be spooked out of speaking up for a few more seconds, in a way grateful for the excuse to not have to draw attention to herself (even in such a small way) just yet...

Striding confidently into view, tossing a dagger to catch it by the point every minute or so, Kellen makes himself obvious. Cat's outta the bag now, better play up the 'hero' bit. Drawing out the throwing knife from the dead kobold's throat, he pockets its store of sling ammunition.

However the halfling had the right to try and make his way in the world however he saw fit, or maybe that was just his personality. In any case the people were safe in the wagon, and the guards could perhaps be saved as well.

"It is good that everyone who has come here to help did, for whatever their reasons. The most important thing is that these people are better off than they were minutes ago, and that the kobolds in this area will not be as quick to waylay travellers."

Merri then looks at everyone in the area and stands, shaking the dust from the bottom of her cloak while addressing Elisan.

"For the moment I have no pressing matters to attend to, and little coin in my purse as well. You find little of worth on the kobold as you shake loose pockets, and pat down the lizard-kin sans a good tooth (in Brandis' case), or their weapons which seem to be of fairly decent material even for kobolds. Most of them long dead, but there are a few with life barely hanging on as they bleed heavily along the road.

Those attempting to aid the guards find that all of them have taken severe wounds, but none are beyond saving. Simple dressings seem to hold the bleeding on the near fatal wounds. As the guards slowly come back to consciousness, they mutter shorts racial slanders against the defeated kobolds, obviously not all together alert yet.

With the words, "You might want to speak to Richard over there," The bearded man leaning against the back of the wagon shakes his head slightly as if waking from a dream. His eyes dart about the scene as he slowly walks to the front of the caravan, his arm doing its best to keep him held vertical. He is a large man, by human standards, and as he walks, the caravan shakes with each aided step he takes forward. He listens for a moment to the group, as he obviously tries to gather himself.

Nodding his head, "I think I'd enjoy the company, now. Seeing as how most of my hired hands are...incapacitated...." His voice trails off for a bit before he shakes his head once more, "I can pay you...though, it isn't very far to Winterhaven. Fifty gold each sound adequate?" He looks about to the group with a still-blistered look on his face.

For a moment, he seems to have handled himself very well for someone who obviously does not use the short sword in his hand very often. He takes another slow blink, but the swaying he had controlled with bracing himself along the still well intact caravan seems to have gotten the best of him. Those close at hand can hear him say, "I never even saw them...coming..." before he takes a slow fall forward, like an oak tree collapsing in the woods.

Kellen

Stepping lightly up to Richard with Merri, Kellen's eyes gleam as he hears the offer of employment and generous compensation. "Sure! I'm in. Looks like you could use people handy with a blade, and I'm your man." When the big human collapses, Kellen springs out of the way. Damn! I'll have to keep these people alive if I want to collect my gold! A pair of daggers seem to jump into the halfling's hands as he stalks out in the direction Richard had come from, seeking whatever hurt the man.

Elisan

After finishing wrapping the guards' wounds, Elisan stood up and used a bit of water from his waterskin to rinse away their blood from his hands. As he did this, he listened quietly to the conversation going on around him until Richard collapsed forward. "Richard!" Elisan echoed Merri's exclamation and hurried over to see what had happened. He immediately knelt down to attempt to ascertain what had happened and help to fix it.

Aid Merri's heal check, not that she probably needs it. [roll0]

Haven

Haven made a startled gasping sound and reflexively jumped backward, gripping her staff in close and covering her mouth in surprise. "I-is he ok?" She asked, wishing that there was more she could do to help.

Baern Halfhand

Baern walks over and places a reassuring hand on Haven's shoulder.

'e should be fine, miss. We'll be able to do more for him once we get to Winterfell.

He looks at the others who have flocked to Richard's side.

We should put him in the cart and keep moving. It'd be best if we get to Winterhaven before nightfall.
