HAPPY PI DAY!!!

Remember to eat a piece of pie at 1:59:26!

Remember, pi=sqrt(6*(1+1/4+1/9+1/16+...))

Alternative compliments for Pi Day include "Transcendental Pi Day!"

Remember also that when you celebrate Pi day, you celebrate with millions of math geeks around the world.

Also, Happy Birthday Albert Einstein!

Oh, and Happy Birthday me! :smallcool:

Why is it Pi Day today, exactly?

Bakkan

Because 3/14 ~ 3.14 ~ Pi!

Oh, because you Americans can't be bothered to write dates in the correct order.

Today is 14 / 03 / 2009. Not 3 / 14 / 2009. Get it right.

Ah, but in the European method, we never have a Pi day. I make allowances for that reason alone :smalltongue:

Day is shorter than the month which is shorter than the year which is shorter than AD - BC. This is why it's Day / Month / Year / AD - BC.

Americans screw up the order by placing Day between Year and Month.

Szilard

When Americans say the date, they say March 14th, or March the 14th, instead of the 14th of March. To us, 3/14/09 makes more sense. I just don't care.

Now back to the pi(e). :smalltongue:

Sure there would. Instead of using the digits, we'd just use an old, but remarkably accurate approximation: 22/7.

Yes, I agree. It's a logical arrangement of units after all.

What I see is that the system used in USA is one of those things that has resisted change from habitual use, out of "cultural stubbornness", not unlike the Imperial System.

And in this particular case of the date, I see it could be influenced by grammatical features of the english language. But that should be irrelevant for a numbering system.

At least this one was posted on the actual day unlike that PI day we had a couple of weeks back. How is that possible?

I do like the logic of dates working in a line but I think it'd be more logical backwards.

19,876
19,877
19,978

The numbers furthest left progress slower than those on the right.

2009/03/14 16:29:30

^ works best logically.

Edit: Plus if you're saving a live file with the date you can't use "/"
So it'd be

trackerschedule090228.xls
trackerschedule090315.xls
trackerschedule090318.xls
trackerschedule090402.xls

Sorted by name order.

trackerschedule020409.xls
trackerschedule150309.xls
trackerschedule180309.xls
trackerschedule280209.xls

When the computer sorts these dd/mm/yy formated files they become impossible to logically track. I've got work files saved daily going back months.

Americans use yyyymmdd sometimes,

Probably because that one is the best for doing files.

The other difference between places is the way people say the date.

I'd say it's the fourteenth of march. I'm sure a lot of you say March fourteenth.

There's more humourous ones than that. I remember hearing on some American cop show "Put yer hands up yer bum!" which I thought he wanted the felon to place his hands in his bottom.

Thanks to message boards like this one and the international education they bring I now know that if to were to put your hands down your pants when confronted with that situation they'd probably think you had a concealed weapon! Lucky escape I tell you.

You're right, but this is only part of it, and in any case I think it's expected that date formats are different for computer filename organisation. In any case, it's computers which should adapt to the date format, and not the other way around. Date names are probably more widely used outside computers than in them (have historically been, actually).

You don't need pie mix.

To make a crust you need (these are U.S. measurements, but if you're not American and want to make it I'm sure you can find a conversion chart through Google)

2.5 C flour
1/3 C sugar
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 C butter, softened

cut together until well mixed. At

4-5 TBSP COLD water

Knead together and set aside. Prepare filling - I used 4 12 (?) oz cans of peaches but the juice from only one can. Dump peaches into saucepan; add approx. 3 TBSP of corn starch plus sugar and cinnamon to taste. While sauce is thickening, divide the dough for the crust in half. Roll out on a floured board/counter. Put bottom crust in pie pan. Pour filling into crust. Put top crust on. Crimp edges. Bake at 350O degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes.

Happy Pi Day.

It's just like the way the Europeans have a Mothering Sunday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothering_Sunday) which is different from the American (and rest of the world) Mother's Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day).
