Thorgrim, Mad World was originally written by Tears for Fears and it was featured on their first album, namely, The Hurting. The ironic thing is that, unlike the cover, it had a fast happy tune to it (dispite being awful, it was somehow the band's breakout song after Suffer the Children, which had the same flaws as Mad World, and Pale Shelter (which is actually good) failed as singles.

I'd say I Won't Hold You Back and I'll Be Over You by Toto, Vermillion Part 2 by Slipknot (which is nothing like part 1), Thief by Oru Lady Peace, What If by Kate Winslet, Runaway Train by Soul Asylum, 2 Beds and a Coffee Machine and You Can Still Be Free by Savage Garden, DSrive by The Cars, Start of the Breakdown and I Believe by Tears for Fears, Join me and Gone With the Sin by HIM, Sleeping With Ghosts, Ask for Answers, Summer's Gone and Song To Say Goodbye by Placebo, Holding Back the Years by Simply Red, Gary Jule's version of Mad World, Protection by Massive Attack, Love Calling Earth and Killing Me by Robbie Williams, Everybody Hurts by REM, All Fall Down by Ultravox, the original Do They Know It's Christmas and The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve are the most depressing songs I've ever heard (at least as far as songs I like are concerned).

I'll post more songs as I remember about them.

Lady d'Arbanville (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h61ffFRFmxw) by Cat Stevens.

The Partisan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG4ndbhOkpI) by Leonard Cohen, though it helps if you look up the French lyrics. Or speak French, I guess.

I am Stretched on Your Grave, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95I7t1znYFk) the Kate Rusby version.

One More Cup of Coffee, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvdROhI_4Rs) Dylan.

The Famous Flower of Serving Men, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2K7HcYld5s) by Martin Carthy. More the lyrics, but the melody has an oddly sad sound to it. Warning: long.

Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_ESUac73_I) by Bonnie Prince Billy. The lyrics toe the line of annoyingly angsty, but it's ambiguous enough that it doesn't matter too much, plus his voice is pretty unique.

Edit: fixed one of the links.

Hurt as sung by Johnny Cash

This tops my list too. Cash took a song that, in my opinion at least, was somewhat mediocre compared to Nine Inch Nails' other music and made it something truly powerful.

Bother by Stonesour ranks as well.

The other mentions of Loreena McKennitt reminded me of Dante's Prayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDw3CyOmj20).

Particularly meaningful for me because it set the mood for a story I was writing, so I had it on repeat for a couple days while I finished it up. I posted it (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102552) a while back in Arts and Crafts for anybody who wants to see if the song matches up.

I also find Jethro Tull's Farm on the Freeway and Cross-Eyed Mary very sad but more for content and less for how the song sounds. Farm does sound like a sad song tho. Cross-eyed Mary is way more upbeat but child prostitution is never fun.

I prefer NIN's version of Hurt by a long shot, but Cash's version is okay. I just can't understand at all why many people like it better than the original.

I really wanted to fit some Tom Waits in on my little list, but I actually always find his music to contain some weird nostalgic "I may be drunk, but I still feel good"-quality. Quite simply not sad enough.

What? Didn't you get to the part of Puff the Magic Dragon where Jackie Paper can play no more, so Puff, that mighty dragon, ceases his fearless roar? Without his lifelong friend Puff cannot be brave, so Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slips into his cave.

Trent Reznor pretty much said, "It's not my song anymore. Not that it matters, but when and where? I only remember that he said he liked it, and admired Cash, but it essentially felt like somebody was kissing his girlfriend.

Cash routinely says that almost every cover people make of his songs are better than his songs. That is very sympathetic of him, but I call BS on quite a few of those. Covers can be a difficult subject to approach for an artist, making it very hard to assess their sincerity. But, again, it doesn't matter much.

I found it on Wikipedia, which cites Alternative Press #194 as the source.

The quote:

I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.

Emphasis mine.

Nothing Compares to you - Sinead o'Connor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO8JWbG6bVw) makes me tear up and cry every time I hear it.

Is it wrong that I've had a soft spot for "When You Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6zFSOqPqYY&fmt=18)" ever since I heard it on Rugrats in Paris (My mother was away at the time, making such songs hit some serious soft spots).

By that same logic, "Deliver Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GbI2Tlt55w&fmt=18)" from Prince of Egypt (I'm not trying to get Religious up in here, just saying that it's a touching song).

This might be a really weak entry, but another song that I've been soft for is "White Houses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5DDN09A534&fmt=18)" by Vanessa Carlton.. Can't describe why, maybe it's the piano, maybe it's the lyrics, maybe it's because I lack any rights to man-bits...

Agreed, aside from a few exceptions.. May Today Become The Day isn't that depressing, really.

Anyway, a list. Tried to get youtube videos with lyrics attached as well.

Slipknot - Snuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq2FLZFzBJU
Absolutely epic song, a huge pity they didn't play it live... this song has affected me a lot more than most others I have heard. Ever.

Hurt - Alone with the Sea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC3oILjeX8E

Hurt - House Carpenter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCeYFJh3V-k
Two songs by the same band. Different albums. Most of the songs from that band are.. intensely emotional. They'll either rip you out of your seat in rage, or render you immobile with sadness. Singing along to them is hard, not because of the vocal range but instead because of the content of the lyrics. The second one, I believe, is a lot sadder, a lot more intense than the first... in some ways. But not others.

Sentenced - No One There
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGtrNZwqpCY
Needs very little explanation. Sadly, a lyric'd version was not seen, but the video does just as well.

And, finally, Ryan Star's cover of Losing My Religion. Saw this on TV when it first came on...

Can't immediately think of any more... from different bands that have not been said, at least. Of all of those, I would definitely say House Carpenter is the most intense. Listen to it. Now.

EDIT: And, even though I am likely to get hung, drawn and quartered for saying this, Enter Shikari - Adeiu. The second half, at least. Though really, it's more warming and sentimental than sad... I saw them live once, and it was intense.

Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. I'm serious, it's crushingly depressing . . . if you've seen Grave of the Fireflies.

If you have, watch this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR_HaHLnboA) video. I can't listen to the song without tearing up now. Just earlier today it came on while I was in a restaurant. Instant crushing depression.

Otherwise, I'd agree with Darkness, by Disturbed, and My Immortal, by Evanescence.

I'd also add Concrete Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLwwy-g2wkc) and Alyssa Lies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvBbBQOifx4), as well as Hello (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjEPCczY11E) by Evanescence. I didn't think it was too sad at first until I learned it was about when she was told of her younger sister's death, and now it makes me very sad.

I don't think I would label anything in my list the "-est ever"

but you might find

Long December - Counting Crows
Don't Panic - Coldplay
She's a Jar - Wilco

to be to your liking. I guess I don't think theyre sad, so much as beautiful..

Opera has no shortage of tragic arias, if you're into that - because the music has to fit the story.

-vesti la giubba from Pagliaccio is a quick example

VNV Nation - Forsaken
A bit of background here. This song was originally devised as an instrumental.

Even as an instrumental, the song... it paints so bleak and sad a picture that it almost brings a tear to my eye. And I don't cry easily.

The lyrics, the first time they were performed, were not rehearsed. They were not even written. Ronan Harris just picked up the mic, and started singing. The way he sings it... is incredible. Nobody expected him to sing, but by the end he was crying.
Link to the vocal version. Live. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k23ZewdVVSI)

And then also...

No One But You - Queen

I have an album full of my 'sad songs', but off the top of my head.

Butterfly Wings by Exile Inside
Gymnopedie No 2 by Erik Satie - a graceful melancholy
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Mis - more so now I'm getting on a bit and think back fondly on lost friends - one of whom could sing this beautifully...

Tinsel Town by Feeder reminds me of the terrible emotional trauma I was going through with an ex at the time, and is also quite sad in its own right.

Who wants to live forever by Queen, probably because I'm a sentimental old mare who misses her old friends.

Still really sad stuff, though.

Insomnium's Change of Heart is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. You listen to it a few times and you are overcome with angst. I suspect many people wouldn't be able to get past the distortion etc. on it, though. Yes, the whole discography of Insomnium is super sad, but this is the shining star of sorrow.

Paradise by the Dashboard Lights by Meatloaf.
"I like you, I need you, but I'll never never love you..." There was a time when those lyrics would bring me to tears.

That'd be Two Out of Three Ain't Bad. "I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you... now don't be sad.... 'cause two out of three ain't bad..."

Paradise By the Dashboard Lights is a little, ah, bouncy for this thread.

Against Me! have their share of sadness; I Still Love You Julie and Pints of Guinness Make You Strong are excellent pieces of more personal tragedy.

@Innis: I would describe No Children more as bitter than as sad; Game Shows Touch Our Lives is the centerpiece of sorrow on Tallahassee, I'd say. Darnielle's a brilliant lyricist, though, and the sublimity of his sad songs cannot be expressed so much as experienced. I'd absolutely recommend anyone to listen to The Mountain Goats.

@Decoy: Candlemass can never make me sad, not after watching the video for Bewitched.

I think there are too many kinds of sadness to narrow it down to a few songs. Pieces of intricate global sorrow abound in hardcore punk, while bands like Songs Ohia express romantic heartbreak, and so on.

I mean, it's a part of a very sad story. I just didn't think the song was a particularly sad portion of it; it seemed more focussed on the anger, and bitter, detached cynicism born of the sorrows in other songs. It's definitely related, and it's not upbeat, certainly, so I'd say your decision is perfectly valid. I just never thought of it in that sense. Although, it's certainly one of the best.

Nirvana's cover of Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdyqXSa5Bzc) is insanely sad, especially in light of Kurt's suicide so soon after it was recorded.

Thirding this choice, didn't know the artist just the title and that I hate when it comes on the radio when I am driving because I just start bawling, I swear one of these days that song is going to get me killed. Kind of odd really because I actually have a real good relationship with my dad, who says that this song was actually part of the reason he felt compelled to take such an active role with my brother and me. Sing by Abra Moore.

Can't remember his name, but I believe whoever wrote this song heard the Cash version and said essentially, "Yeah, that's Hurt."

Trent Reznor; and he was actually incredibly pissed at first, partially because Cash changed the lyrics and inserted...themes...into it that Reznor didn't want associated with the song. But then Reznor essentially said "whatever, he made it his own" and went on his unmerry way. The Kermit version on YouTube is actually closer to the original in intent than Cash's version. The original and Cash's version are, essentially, entirely different songs.

"Creep" by Radiohead..........
Yea, some people find that song creepy, though not all.

"In My Life" by Keith Moon(the cover) just because the tone in his voice gives it a really sad tone.

"However Much I Booze," by The Who(Rock on; Of course) by the simple fact it's about how Pete Townshend will never escape the fact of how much of a drunk, looser, a lier, and a faker, and a "Well-F**Ked Sailor"

"How Many Friends?" by the Who. The general potrayal of someone feeling that the people who call him their friend aren't real friends, asking the question of how many friends does he really have and that he can count them on his one hand.
Basicly that entire album "The Who by Numbers"(which the previous two are from) is extremely depressing.

I find alot of songs overwhelm with me emotion because of my personal connection to them, but idk if I could actually say sad. These all I could think of.

And one more thing. The Second Rock Opera by the Who.

Anything performed by the Carpenters is simultaneously the saddest and most heart warming songs ever (With the exception of "Please Mr. Postman" and "Top of the World"), I dare you to deny this!

I can really feel a lot of the sadness and misery in Freddie Mercury's head in a lot of the song from the Innuendo album, especially "Show Must go on" and "Mother Love".

Well maybe "Yesterday" to, and the Lyrics from Meat Loafs Two out of Three ain't bad" should be sad, however I really don't see the song as such for some reason.

Mother Love is actually from Made in Heaven, but I agree that it can't have been easy doing any of those.

IIRC it's also from Innuendo, but I might be wrong.

Creep" by Radiohead..........

Heh. After playing it like 20 times in Rock Band (at least once for evey world tour to get the van) i mostly find it annoying. I also often add my own lyrics in between the real verses to make it a song about a man obessing over his pet cat.

"Creep" lost a lot of its power after I heard that Radiohead themselves (and Thom in particular) really dislike that song. In fact, the muted, overdriven notes that kick in before the chorus? That's the guitarist deliberately mucking about trying to sabotage the song during recording.

Anyway, nerd chops out! Eyes On Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNefNLOHVYk) from FFVIII is a pretty sad song. It's basically a ballady style love song, but the circumstances make it tearjerky 'cause it was wrote for a romance that never happened, since the two were seperated. (I won't say anymore, in case it spoils the plot for anyone.) More conventionally, Crown of Love by Arcade Fire (They say it fades, if you let it / love was made to forget it) and Winter by little-known band C/O/R/D.

Caroline, No, by The Beach Boys takes the cake, in my opinion.
Plus, the whole Brian Wilson story is tragic.

Beautiful Boy, by John Lennon, always feels bittersweet to me because it's so optimistic and Lennon died about a month after it was released, just as his life seemed to be on the upswing. It was brutal, in retrospect.

Tears of a Clown, by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles has pretty sad subject matter, though the music itself is upbeat.

"Another Plane Went Down" by Shawn Colvin.

You can select it here (http://www.rhapsody.com/shawn-colvin/whole-new-you--id9602460) off the album to listen to it.

The album came out in August 2001, and I basically used this song to cauterize the mental wounds of 9/11, so there's extra layers of meaning for me now.
