Thorgrim, Mad World was originally written by Tears for Fears and it was featured on their first album, namely, The Hurting. The ironic thing is that, unlike the cover, it had a fast happy tune to it (dispite being awful, it was somehow the band's breakout song after Suffer the Children, which had the same flaws as Mad World, and Pale Shelter (which is actually good) failed as singles.

I'd say I Won't Hold You Back and I'll Be Over You by Toto, Vermillion Part 2 by Slipknot (which is nothing like part 1), Thief by Oru Lady Peace, What If by Kate Winslet, Runaway Train by Soul Asylum, 2 Beds and a Coffee Machine and You Can Still Be Free by Savage Garden, DSrive by The Cars, Start of the Breakdown and I Believe by Tears for Fears, Join me and Gone With the Sin by HIM, Sleeping With Ghosts, Ask for Answers, Summer's Gone and Song To Say Goodbye by Placebo, Holding Back the Years by Simply Red, Gary Jule's version of Mad World, Protection by Massive Attack, Love Calling Earth and Killing Me by Robbie Williams, Everybody Hurts by REM, All Fall Down by Ultravox, the original Do They Know It's Christmas and The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve are the most depressing songs I've ever heard (at least as far as songs I like are concerned).

Two songs by the same band. Different albums. Most of the songs from that band are.. intensely emotional. They'll either rip you out of your seat in rage, or render you immobile with sadness. Singing along to them is hard, not because of the vocal range but instead because of the content of the lyrics. The second one, I believe, is a lot sadder, a lot more intense than the first... in some ways. But not others.

Insomnium's Change of Heart is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. You listen to it a few times and you are overcome with angst. I think there are too many kinds of sadness to narrow it down to a few songs. Pieces of intricate global sorrow abound in hardcore punk, while bands like Songs Ohia express romantic heartbreak, and so on.

Trent Reznor; and he was actually incredibly pissed at first, partially because Cash changed the lyrics and inserted...themes...into it that Reznor didn't want associated with the song. But then Reznor essentially said "whatever, he made it his own" and went on his unmerry way. The Kermit version on YouTube is actually closer to the original in intent than Cash's version. Yea, some people find that song creepy, though not all.

Heh. After playing it like 20 times in Rock Band (at least once for evey world tour to get the van) i mostly find it annoying. I also often add my own lyrics in between the real verses to make it a song about a man obessing over his pet cat.

"Creep" lost a lot of its power after I heard that Radiohead themselves (and Thom in particular) really dislike that song. In fact, the muted, overdriven notes that kick in before the chorus? That's the guitarist deliberately mucking about trying to sabotage the song during recording.

Anyway, nerd chops out! Eyes On Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNefNLOHVYk) from FFVIII is a pretty sad song. It's basically a ballady style love song, but the circumstances make it tearjerky 'cause it was wrote for a romance that never happened, since the two were seperated. (I won't say anymore, in case it spoils the plot for anyone.) More conventionally, Crown of Love by Arcade Fire (They say it fades, if you let it / love was made to forget it) and Winter by little-known band C/O/R/D.

Caroline, No, by The Beach Boys takes the cake, in my opinion.
Plus, the whole Brian Wilson story is tragic.

Beautiful Boy, by John Lennon, always feels bittersweet to me because it's so optimistic and Lennon died about a month after it was released, just as his life seemed to be on the upswing. It was brutal, in retrospect.

Tears of a Clown, by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles has pretty sad subject matter, though the music itself is upbeat.
