So today I woke up at 5:30 in the morning, convinced that my friend was getting married, and that I had to stop her. After frantically looking for my cell phone for 10 minutes, I realized that I had just confused a dream with reality. I then spent the next 20 minutes trying to figure what the hell was actually real.

It was a fun morning.

Proposition: Why do Hollywood cars explode when they ignite?
Solution: Americans shed gunpowder, like an awesome aura of American-ness, which gathers on the upholstery.

Well, since the last time I was here I have:

- bought a new mini laptop (in case anybody is vaguely interested it's a Dell Inspiron mini with 3G broadband - which is quite a new thing over here. The only problem is: the operating system is in Chinese; so every time I want to change something I have to ask my husband for help, and then he monopolizes the computer for hours and I can't get back on it.

- spent 24 hours at a Chinese hot spring resort. "Wen chuan" is the precise Chinese equivalent of the Japanese "onsen", except the Chinese ones tend to be a bit kitschier and there's no public nudity involved. It's still great fun, and I got so relaxed that I almost broke my sworn vow of internet anonymity by posing for pictures which I intended to post on the You thread. Luckily (unluckily?) fate decided to intervene by causing my husband to drop my mobile - with all the photos saved on it - directly into the hot spring pool.

- worked in Nanjing today.

- bumped into the Chairman of the ruling party of Taiwan and his entire entourage in the hotel lobby. Almost literally - I was walking out to buy a carton of milk as they all came sailing in. (The entourage consists of six gleaming black Mercedes Benz, five mini-buses full of people in suits, a police escort on motorbikes, and an ambulance. I have no idea why they need an ambulance, since all the people in suits seem perfectly healthy, but apparently they do. Possibly it's just a precaution?)

Yes, the cake is a lie, unless you actually did manage to create a cake in a matter of seconds, and send it across the world in the blink of an eye, in a Ffordian-pizza-fax inspired nightmare. Well done for noticing such a fact.

Oh, well, I'll say something new, and moderately less inspiring, presuming that what I was going to say were I able to remember it would have been inspiring. I am sad that the Kuzuis are looking to reboot Buffy, should such a thing be true, and am also happy that the weather outside is nice.

Bacon? Real bacon?! Where!

The great gap between U.S. and U.K. English lies not in the objects which have different names on either side of the pond (every-day banking is fuu-uu-uun, let me tell you), but the common terms which refer to very different objects! "Bacon" is one of the worst offenders in this regard. They seem to use it like "pork" (U.S.) in that if your pig part does not make ham, it makes bacon. Come to think of it, I should just ask what cut of pork they've tied around the chicken whatchamacallits in the name of fancy cooking, but the truth is I'm afraid to finally know. . .

Here our soldiers stand from all around the world
Waiting in a line to hear the battle cry
All are gathered here, victory is near
The sound will fill the hall, bringing power to us all
We alone are fighting for metal that is true
We own the right to live the fight, we're here for all of you
Now swear the blood upon your steel will never dry
Stand and fight together beneath the battle sky
Brothers everywhere, raise your hands into the air
We're warriors, warriors of the world
Like thunder from the sky, sworn to fight and die
We're warriors, warriors of the world
Many stand against us, but they will never win
We said we would return and here we are again
To bring them all destruction, suffering and pain
We are the hammer of the gods, we are thunder, wind and rain.
There they wait in fear with swords in feeble hands
With dreams to be a king, first one should be a man
I call about and charge them all with a life that is a lie
And in their final hour they shall confess before they die
If I should fall in battle, my brothers who fight by my side
Gather my horse and weapons, tell my family how I died
Until then I will be strong, I will fight for all that is real
All who stand in my way will die by steel
Brothers everywhere, raise your hands into the air
We're warriors, warriors of the world

:smallconfused: I get the non-intuitive, but how is it non-scientific? And, really, the non-intuitiveness only comes from the definition of the temperature scale, not the use of the scale itself.

I mean, even as an American I don't usually justify the measurement systems we use over here; in fact, temperature is the only American measuring system I use regularly. That, however, is because unlike, say, miles or cups, one never needs to convert between units (i.e. converting feet to miles or cups to gallons) which is where all the messiness comes in.

Yes, but that doesn't make it nonscientific. Measurement systems are ultimately arbitrary; it's the level of convenience that decides which measurement system to use, not the level of "scientificness."

Okay so imagine we have a pair of scissors, and the blades are millions of light years long, thus the ends of each are even farther when spread... And the two handles are about 100 yards apart. If we were to shut the scissors (in a vacuum of course, with no air resistance and the metal would not bend.) wouldn't the point of intersection of the blades move faster than the speed of light :smallconfused:?

No. For one, it would depend on how quickly you shut it. For two, it is the points furthest from the point of rotation that have the greater instantaneous velocity (assuming that I understand you and the point of intersection is where the blades rotate.) The outside points have further to travel, after all. Thirdly, nothing can move faster than the speed of light according to modern wisdom, so any scenario which portrays this is impossible. :smalltongue:

Well, theoretically, something with precisely no mass that could somehow be affected by the outside world could gain infinite acceleration with the slightest amount of force applied to it, thus move faster than light.

But since that thing doesn't exist in any realm that we can apply force to, it is of no use discussing using any kind of physics we can think of.

I'm pressed for time, but I'll hit you with another scenario, and respond to that later tonight, if that is suitable :smalltongue:. But what I mean is, in the time it takes for the gap to close between the handles, would equal the time it takes to close those many billion light years.

Furthermore, let's say... Me and you are brothers, and we see each other every morning. You know that I arbitrarily wear one red, and one green sock (on each foot). I pull up my pant leg, and show you I am wearing a green sock on my left foot. You then know, instantaneously, that I am wearing a red sock on my right foot. See, information can move faster than the speed of light, but it is not tangible, and no relatively useful information can be transmitted this way.

@TRD: Isn't it 1?

About the scissors: But a point is not an object, wave, or particle. Can't it move at any speed it wants to? Oh, but the ends of the scissors, say, would then move faster then light if it could be shut quickly. Except that what would actually happen is that the blades get more and more massive and harder and harder to close, so you couldn't close it fast enough to get it to go faster than light.

@^: Actually, it moves as fast as it takes the electric currents in your brain to analyze the situation and determine via elimination the color of the other sock. If the brain has been replaced with some sort of instantaneously thinking thing, then it does.

3 ohms going along each side, 3 across the middle piece. 1/3*3=1. 1/1=1. I think I'm probably overlooking something important though.

I have an alternate solution that says 1/4, so maybe not.

No. I don't know that you are wearing a red sock on your right foot, though experience informs me that this is a likelihood. There's nothing to stop you from putting on a different color just to have a go at me, for example, or maybe all your red socks were ruined. The only way to know that you are wearing a red sock on your right foot is to look at your right foot.

Right, but, going by his point, one could theoretically make up the difference. Maybe he has super-long legs so his feet are billions of light years apart. The light reflecting off his socks and the speed of thought don't make up for the fact that you know about something billions of years before that information should be able to transmit. The flaw is in the idea of "knowing" rather than the method of getting information.

Processing speed is irrelevant anyways in problems like these. As far as relativity is concerned, you "get" the message as soon as the light hits your eyes, which means you are receiving information faster than light if the unseen foot is slightly farther away from you than the "seen" foot.

Yes, that's true. It's just that, if such an answer was appropriate to such questions, one could solve any theoretical faster than light communications issue by just making the processing of the message slow enough-which is silly. If I have an instantaneous communication device, if I make it so that the computer that receives it calculates the distance between it and the sending computer, then takes a time to process the message equal to that distance divided by the speed of light, it doesn't make the message any less instantaneous, with all the causality violations that potentially come with it.

Let's have alook at that sock-information scenario. If the sock is put up at time A, then the eye will perceive it at a certain time after, once the light reflecting off the sock has reached the eye. From then, the eye sends small electric pulses through the nerves to the brain, moving, of course, slower than light. After that, electric pulses much travel between different parts of the brain, until eventually the brain comes to a conclusion that the other foot has the other sock colour.

Let's say two electron are orbiting in cohesion, many millions of light years apart. One spinning upwards, the other spinning downward. By some irrelevant circumstance, we know that: They are spinning in complete opposite directions. They will never change direction. And no outside force will interfere with the electrons. By seeing electron A spinning upward, doesn't that mean electron B is spinning downward, before the millions of years (by the seemingly malleable speed of light) it would take to travel however far out and see Electron B? Thus the transmission of that information moves faster than the speed of light. But again, it is useless information and therefore, ultimately irrelevant.

Hey, Fred. Regarding your location, I've managed to convince the people on my TF2 primary server that I hail from a place called Crazytown, population me. The laws are strictly abided by the only citizen (me) and the only member of the imperial senate (me) who established the laws in the first place. We have a trade embargo with Funkytown and I'm sure the Funkytownspeople would not hesitate to aid us in our cause to remove those two extra exclamation marks from your location.

Thank you,

My motivation and level of activity have leaked out of the two orifices on the side of my head. If anyone sees them, would they be so kind as to scoop them into some bucket, and return them to me?

I really hate these times when my level of activity drop. :smallsigh: :smallfrown:
I need to be doing something constructive, or productive, but if I try to write, I have writer's block before even opening that .rtf file. If I try writing music, the notes lose originality before I've opened my music program.

I don't like being this useless. :smallsigh:

Better Sock scenario:

Well no... the information isn't travelling far at all. Think about it, you're not actually gaining any information from the electron that you aren't observing, you're just extrapolating from the information you have gleaned from the nearby electron (at well below the speed of light).

Also there is no certainty in this situation that the second electron will act in the way you predict.

If the act of observing the electrons spinning actually effected the spin of the other electron (which you specifically ruled out), ie that knowing that electron a spins clockwise makes electron b spin anti-clockwise, then you're in a whole different quantum mechanical ball-field. But then again I don't understand that topic enough to talk about it much (also I don't think particles paired in such away can exist very far apart... I just don't know)

UAE. And what did you get batteries for? :smallconfused:
Just curious, because last year, I really wanted to make a coilgun. Never got around to it, and now I'm not sure why I wanted to make one. :smalltongue:

Well, see, I have this thing for taking stuff apart... so I got an extra NES (mine works perfectly even after nearly 20 years of being in my possession). I figured, hey, why not do things to it? I'm taking a trip in a few weeks, so I figured, hey, why not take my NES? Except it's hard to use during the trip and one can only use it at the destination. So the answer... portable NES!

So I have a screen (not great, but it works and I got it very cheap for an LCD TV thingy). I have the NES. I have stuff to make the case with, plenty of cables, a sacrificial controller, voltage regulators, etc. I just needed the battery. I wanted a li-ion battery, but those aren't the easiest thing to use (and especially... GET). See, you have to get universal ones, or they explode. And finding universal li-ion batteries... is not easy. So while we were looking for that, my dad sees these lead acid ones, 12V (so that would spare us the use of one regulator). And he goes, hey, why not use those? I told him that 2 amperes-hour wasn't good enough, given how the device will use 1.1 (so the battery would last less than two hours). So my dad comes up with the idea that we can just use two and connect them to each other in parallel and that would give us the 12V but with twice the capacity. So then, 3.6 hours of power. It's a heavy setup, but I can't currently afford any better than that. And since the batteries were at clearance... 2 lead acid batteries it is. I'll just add some sort of strap or something to the portable so that it will be easier to carry around.

... And it will double as a self-defense weapon, it's gonna be that heavy. :smalltongue:

Ah, I thought you might have been hovering around this. Now, I'll admit, quantum mechanics is one of my weak points, so I'm not entirely confident about this. However, I still know much more than most people.

I and a few friends actually had a conversation with a graduate student about this. The setup wasn't as you described, but it was essentially the same situation. (There are some unnecessities and inaccuracies in yours.) He basically told us that this is a question that still bothers physicists. The fact that you can't actually use this information to do anything is, for some, sufficient, but others find it unsatisfying and seek other answers. It isn't something I know a lot about, but for some people it is still an important question which has not yet been resolved.

The scissors scenario is interesting, but something (the spirit of Kepler, perhaps) keeps interjecting my train of thought with mutterings about speed and more importantly the "over TIME" part of the definition thereof, and other things (various organs of mine) are interjecting with discomfort and pain. In short, while I visualize the scissor blades going convex/parallel towards one another as they close, I can't articulate why.

Actually, you've hit on something that I forgot to take into consideration yesterday night, mostly because I was thinking in terms of nonrelativistic rotators and not giving the problem its due thought. One actually can't have a blade billions of light years long that doesn't bend; the very closest you can get is that it will warp at the speed of light as you try and rotate it, the motion traveling down the length of the blade gradually instead of all at once. Your visualization might very well be accurate. Interesting.

It is, however, still the case that the time between the beginning of motion of the tips of the scissors and the end of it would still be the same as the time it takes to close them; however, they would happen at different times.

Aside: This has nothing to do with the conversation, but here (http://www.spacetimetravel.org/tuebingen/tuebingen.html) you can see a pretty neat video showing what one would see if traveling at the speed of light (except you're traveling at normal speeds so you can actually see it, so think of it as some weird phenomenon that shifts light as traveling at near lightspeeds would.)

Graduation ceremonies are for families, not the student. True vindication comes from turning in that last test.

I'm standing in the middle of an absolutely dark field, that is immensely vast. I'm shining a flashlight into the sky and the beam of light is visible for let's say... one hundred miles. The distant doesn't really play that big of a role in the case, but regardless, the light is going pretty far out. Now, I spin the actual flashlight around in my hand as quickly as practical, so the beam of light made a complete 180 turn, across the sky. The beam of light is moving at the same rate the flashlight is, so in the time it takes the flashlight to make a 3 foot angling adjustment, it will take the beam of light to make a several hundred mile arc. Correct :smallconfused:?

Correct :smallconfused:?

Sort of. The thing is that the beam isn't a physical thing, it's a stream of photons, so moving the flashlight would just be cutting off the stream at one point and restarting it at another; it's like waving a hose back and forth. The stream of water doesn't stay solid, it curves with the motion of the hose.

It would look kind of like this:

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u282/teddifunken/lightbeam.jpg

except the spiral part would be more circular. This is just an instantaneous look, however; all of the light would be moving away from you at the speed of light.

Mr. Mud
2009-05-31, 01:55 PM
AJ: Hm, okay, I think I sort of understand... My highest formal physics education was AP Physics, in which I sort of sat in the back, texted, then cram studied and aced the finals :smalltongue:.

But, wouldn't that also mean that light can move faster than the pre determined speed of light? Or is there a language discrepancy in the title "Speed of Light"? Or does this not demonstrate light moving fast at all, but just shows blasts of photons moving in a circle sine the beam is not whole :smallconfused:? I'm sort of just spilling my thoughts here with no real articulation, but:

Would these photons, or the rate at which they are being emmitted be moving faster than the speed of light?
And
Does 'speed of light' mean the speed at which light moves or the speed at which photons are emitted from a source?

averagejoe
2009-05-31, 02:00 PM
The speed of light refers to how fast light moves; emission rate can be thought of as intensity. The more photons the light source produces per time, the brighter the light is. But all of the photons will be moving at exactly the speed of light (unless they encounter some other medium.)

This:

Or does this not demonstrate light moving fast at all, but just shows blasts of photons moving in a circle sine the beam is not whole ?

is more or less correct. Except the photons themselves aren't really moving in a circle, but I don't think that's what you meant.

Okay so...

You may have seen this little proof that 2 = 1:

a = x [true for some a's and x's]
a+a = a+x [add a to both sides]
2a = a+x [a+a = 2a]
2a-2x = a+x-2x [subtract 2x from both sides]
2(a-x) = a+x-2x [2a-2x = 2(a-x)]
2(a-x) = a-x [x-2x = -x]
2 = 1 [divide both sides by a-x]

That last step involved dividing by zero... Bleh. :smallyuk:. I thought I has something.

Lensman is well known in the UKitp circle. He's my dad (fortunately? Unfortunately? Dunno really.)

Starfish has posted once, I think, and now hardly even looks at the forums from what I can tell. She's my mum.

Valdus Fire was an active lurker among the fan comics. Dunno if he still is. That would be my brother.

And then there's my cuddly wonderful fox that is on these forums. ^.^

@^ Hah, I have my maths exam tomorrow too! Edexcel Calculator?

I have mine as well. But it's AQA and not Edexcel. It is calculator though.

Yes! I finally beat the level in Inkball I've been practicing for since September! Life is complete.

:smalleek:. But Ehrm, no none of my family posts itp, which I am very, very thankful for. :smalltongue:

Two people from my home forum followed me here, then nestled into the d20 forum. One departed after the worg game disintegrated; the other is still here as sporadically as his online presence on the other forum. No guildies from any game, no RL acquaintances here to the best of my knowledge.

Apparently, it’s where you sit with a book and highlight everything. I tried that once, I never really got how highlighting all the words helps though. :smallconfused:

Amen to that. 'Twas always a baffling, blinding year when I got such a color-coordinated textbook. My only guess is that lesson boredom + highlighters = entire paragraphs overlaid with blocks of color without respect to the text. Then again, the quality of the marginalia was always inversely proportional to the amount of it. A body was better off not regarding the previous owners' remarks as study aids, as a rule. The notebooks and worksheet marginalia, on the other hand, made no pretense of being study material, especially after celebrating the end of another school year by going back over the notebooks with an acerbic pen. My friends and I achieved levels of perv that it took the Internet years to surpass.

It's weird for me to look around and realize that I'm actually kind of an oldie-itp. :smalleek:

"kind of" being the operative term.

Don't worry. We still wuv you. Myself, I can't remember when I joined without looking at my Join Date thingy. 2007 perhaps?
Seems right.

And on this forum are my Best Friend (never posted though), some acquaintances and perhaps other people I know from college.
I don't mind. Makes this my thing and mine alone.

Revising?
Meh. It's just rereading your set texts (for Lit, History and Classics) and going over what you've made notes on again.
It's okay, hateful when it comes to M His; depends on the person though really.

This for me as well, but with an 'is' instead of 'are'.

I've been here forever and a day. You'd think I'd have my own army of fangirls (and fanboys too, equal opportunity) by now.

Hm. I should remedy this.

Hmm, you seem different somehow, Raistlin, though I can't quite put my finger on it....:smallconfused:

Groupies: something that has to be cultivated.

I should see if my brother is on the forums or not... If he ever saw my username/avatar he'd know me in a second, and I know he reads OotS, having gotten my dad to start perusing it and Girl Genius...

Cultivated, hm? Right, good idea. *Sets up a groupie farm in the South of France*

Oh? Who?
Also: because you took a clause out of my sentence it makes me think my sentence is wrong even though I know why I put 'are' and not 'is'.

Surely you can't be serious.

Dude, totally. Why do you think Psycho Mantis went insane?

Anyone here listen to fiddlin' music? I've just finished ripping all of the songs off of the CDs my mother got recently into her itunes library and find myself amazed at the mixture of desiring to strangle others and enjoying the sound of it....

Oh? Who?

No idea. He just told me he joined, and then didn't feel like posting for some reason. *Shrug*

To all: Since I have a good memory sometimes and Rawhide's not here, I will remind people not to make a new RB thread, as something special is apparently going to happen. I for one want to see what it is.

Perhaps he'll get bored and start posting one day? You never know.

ION:
I have spent the last hour most gloriously mocking my siblings for they have school tomorrow and I don't! And it's hot out so they'll die. Especially as for Elder Younger Brother and Little Sister the school's No Blazer and Tie policy is doesn't kick in until the temperature goes above 21*C or starts the second/third week in June.
Ah, having a vindictive cad for a Big Sister must be upsetting. I love it.

I, for one, welcome our new Rawhide overlords. Hooray!

It's possible. I also need to introduce one of my other friends to the shipping thread at some point. I think she'd find it rather interesting.

Oooh, I'm excited! Thanks for reminding us, Monsieur Thur.

I'm glad I've decided to have my itunes on more often lately. haha. Definitely helps act as a mind blank...
