Welcome to the 21th ABR Discussion Thread!
Randomizer, you should be ashamed of yourself >:(
Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)
Putting white text here. It's just plain wrong!
Avatar Battle Royale: We All Live in A Yellow Citadel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88925) is the current thread. Post artwork here.
Just because I did it once, doesn't mean you should.
The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.

I mean, he's the main source of comic relief in ABR these days! He's the funniest one of all of us! He should be a mainer character with Lying! :smalleek:

So is Q, apperently. According to the Avatar Battle Royale page. :smallconfused:

My point is: I think Nameless should be classafied as Main Character, and if it were up to me Ins wouldn't have such a big friggen role in the next plot.

And another thing! I don't understand the concept of FI. If everybody's happy under Ins as a leader, why do we have to save them?! :smallconfused::smallannoyed:

"Special" in terms of brain function/capacity. At least, that's what I'd inferred.

Why are we trying to survive if everything's good under Ins? If we weren't rebelling, then why would we even need to survive?

We think he's up to something (evil clones are evil after all) but wheter we are right or good at all is supposed to be unknown in this plot (darker and edgier wit many many grey-zones if you get the drill) he might be good and we evil, we are just sure it's opposite (might be wrong)

Ah. That makes sense.

Still, I know that this is rather late in the development and mad mask has everything already planned and all, but I vote that the future is a little more hellish. A little more gritty with a lot more people unhappy. A setting a little more like.....well, the on in [warning, this link may not be suitable for eveyone] this (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/there-will-be-brawl/496-Episode-One), for example.

With bars, gang realated violence and massive unhappiness from people other then us, I think darkness and grittiness would be easier to achieve. I mean, look at the video series I linked! It's about Nintendo, and it's dark and gritty to the bone! :smalleek:

I just think it's something we could think about.

@Keris Rain: That's the whole point of the story. :smalltongue:

Avbaroy is (in non-rebellious territories and for the average commoner) an utopia, and the Resistance wants it down.

^I am open to that, if it's not the fault of the UNA. But the Sovices, on the other hand...

Remember folks, UNA = Good, Sovices = Not Good.

Keris

Mad Mask

What, that blanket opinions that religion is destructive are insensitive, or that the Resistance creates a stable time loop?

No, that the Resistance is not sure about what really caused the destruction of the world, as suggested by Kazul. There may or may not be a stable time loop.

Lyinginbedmon
2009-05-28, 04:13 PM
Remember folks, UNA = Good, Sovices = Not Good.

That's also a little too clear cut, given the Sovice civil war.

The New Sovice Empire likes Avbaroy, though they have strong ethics regarding noninterference with pre-spacefaring civilisations. Basically "If they couldn't find us and ask for help themselves, we don't help them", real "prime directive" kinda stuff really, but they have occasionally lent a hand to non-spacefaring civilisations, especially when Maeter is involved (Which she's taken quite a bit of flack for) because she's got a much more human view of who to help.

The Holy Sovice Militia however adhere to the tenets and teachings of the Sovice gods as if nothing exists. They've assaulted Avbaroy before and they're the Sovices that Lying refers to when he talks about Sovices negatively. Ins, the intelligence of a Sovice block left over from that first assault, adheres to the HSM beliefs (Though it's entirely possible he doesn't realise there's a civil war occuring, given the time he's been apart from the hivemind)

Keris
2009-05-28, 04:14 PM

Oh, god... I played Runescape for like 6 months back in 6th grade... Then I realized it wasn't a game; it's only a program. Games, methinks, by definition, have to be fun, or at least have to attempt to be fun. Runescape does neither.

I quit WoW last year, and I still stand saying it's probably the best game I've ever played (well, I might like CoD 4 more, but... :P). The only problem is, it's too good. It draws people in, and takes over lives; it's too time-consuming, as you never want to quit playing.

Mages were the best... I heard Blizzard nerfed them in WotLK, though. I love my druid, too

@Tiff, don't ask them to try it; it is a great game, and they have no reason to mock them, but at least inform them of the consequences and of its addictive nature before asking them to play.

Is the UNA or the Sovice brainwashing people? cause that could be a fun plot point/subplot

Firstly, the hivemind between each block has a range limit, which is far less than the distance between the surviving blocks from the first assault and the rest of Sovice kind (We're talking light years there).

Secondly, Ins didn't really split voluntarily, he and the rest of the Sovices made from the surviving block in the Fortress of Vengeance were all annihilated and then Ins' block was the one that Onachicken mistakenly resurrected into Lying's corpse.

From there, Ins was basically human, and last I checked humans aren't really bluetooth enabled :smalltongue:

Technically speaking the HSM on Avbaroy is brainwashing people into compliance, but I don't think we're talking Room 101 kinda stuff.

Keveak

Runescape is pretty unpopular around here (buyed games are better) and woW is played by everyone (though I'm getting bored with it and I only got one character and he's below level 30) I might check whatever has changed in Runescape but I don't like those games that much (various reasons)

What about Them (BRC's part of the UNA, I think) would They brainwash people who are too big a thread or knows too much

They are media control, not direct brainwashing. They make sure that the printed word emphasises the good aspects of the UNA, and keeps any negative publicity quashed.

The Ghosts might dabble in some "Room 101" style stuff, but they're officially not part of the UNA government, and any information you have which might lead towards their capture would be appreciated, civilian.

Of course, what the Ghosts get up to is SoG's decision.

Not quite true. Their purpose is media control, but they are not behind strategic brainwashing to support that end. They won't brainwash an entire crowd to keep them quiet, but if, say, a popular radio broadcaster is rocking the boat a little too much, Grandfather may "request" that the ghost of enchantment, or just have his in-house enchanters, brainwash him a little to keep him in line. Or, if they need a resistance cell leader to commit an atrocity to drum up some bad press for the resistance, they may brainwash him. So They arn't really into brainwashing, and it will only occur on Grandfather's direct order, but they recognize that a washed brain in the right place can be very effective.

Keris
2009-05-29, 12:07 PM
Not quite true.

But they won't personally take members of the public into a white, clinical room and expose them to their worst fears in order to reprogram their brains, will they?

What they're doing is brainwashing, but not noticeably so. They gentle nudge public opinion along the right lines, rather than forcing particular dissenters onto different sets of tracks.

They might have particular people forced onto different tracks, but only to help nudge the population at large.

Shades of Gray
2009-05-29, 12:16 PM
If people are becoming too rowdy at large/ rock the boat too much, they are indeed brainwashed by Antoine, but only if they have a way to spread the propaganda at large, via radio, tv, etc.

They send the ghost of illusion to press conferences, speeches, etc. To cover up any things they say that they don't like with sound and vision illusions. They might send the ghost of divination to see things a few seconds in the future, seeing if the will say something bad (yay censorship!). Afterwards, Antoine goes to brainwash them. Rinse and Repeat.

Yeah. They only Brainwash specific people in order to indirectly influence others, and that's only if other methods of influence arn't working. And if they DO brainwash, it tends to be subtle. Getting a Beguiler near them to cast a "Suggestion" spell is their primary method. The White-room method of brainwashing is too unsubtle for them. Besides, the problem with the other sort of Brainwashing is that it can be undone, and then the target may remember what happened to them, and Their existence may be uncovered.

EDIT: there's still sabotage (they would also do stuff like attacking diplomats from potensial allies of the UNA while wearing UNA uniforms)

He'd probably be incarcerated in either a mental asylum or a high security prison. And he wouldn't know that much, the UNA is pretty benevolent. Only Ins knows what's really going on.

The asylum part sounds fun (more destruction can be done) but as far as I know people who think your country just tricked them to come so they could assault them won't always listen to your investigations. I also meant that it would seem more trustworthy if the guy who said it himself comes and say he was misinformed or something (then they put him in an asylum, and probably restrain him otherwise too, cause he's mad MAD)

But countries that attempting to assassinate foreign dignitaries rarely do so with uniformed soldiers. Try to hard to make it look like the UNA did it, and it becomes obvious that they didn't.

I also meant that it would seem more trustworthy if the guy who said it himself comes and say he was misinformed or something (then they put him in an asylum, and probably restrain him otherwise too, cause he's mad MAD
Well, I don't think they would release him again. Even if they did "cure" his insanity, the sudden change in his behaviour would be disturbing. (i.e. Before custody: "The UNA is evil! EVIL!", after custody: "The UNA is the best thing that has happened to Avbaroy.")
It would also probably make better publicity to have him portrayed as incurable, but still cared for by the government he condemns.

But countries that attempting to assassinate foreign dignitaries rarely do so with uniformed soldiers. Try to hard to make it look like the UNA did it, and it becomes obvious that they didn't.

That's why him being tricked into thinking it was the UNA is a good idea to tell people ("it weren't his fault he was manipulated by the evil resistance into it, THAT shows how far they would go" sounds like good propaganda to me and then they could put him in the asylum to "cure" his brainwashed-by-the-resistance state)

and about the other one: They would be trying to make it sound like the diplomat was only tricked in so the UNA could get a hostile before open war, then it would be outright stupid to hide who you are (you can't use the hostile if no-one knows you have it)

But it's even better for the UNA to be able to say "the individual is greatly disturbed. We do not know for sure what caused this, but as the claims he was spouting are similar to the ones levelled by the so called 'Resistance', I think we can draw some conclusions. He's currently being treated at [whatever] Hospital, but we cannot guarantee his recovery any time soon."

I'm only fairly sure I understand what you're saying, but attacking a diplomat would be an act of war. If that was the case, then a diplomat would be taken into custody to use as a bargaining aid, not executed. And certainly not by just two troops in a public area, which is where I assume you'd attack, so as to gain the most impact.

Rot isn't exactly fighting Ins. He is simply an insane vampire who wants to nom everyone. He doesn't care who he kills. As long as they taste good. He doesn't go around shouting out UNC secrets, he goes around maiming, killing, and eating people.

Yes, alright. So? A person from the future might watch, say, Star Trek, and say "Wow, that technology is really primitive!". That doesn't make Star Trek any less Sci-Fi for it's time. In other words, what qualifies as science fiction and what qualifies as fantasy may change as time goes on. Who knows?

I've pegged the subgenre that the plots seem to be heading in.

"Science Fantasy otherworlds

Some science fantasies use fantasy worlds with the thinnest veneer of science fictional trappings, only distinguishable with difficulty from standard fantasy. An early example of this type is Eric Rücker Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros, nominally set on the planet Mercury, but a Mercury that is indistinguishable in any way from a fantasy Earth. This work may be considered a borderline case.

In Andre Norton's Witch World series, the fantasy world is excused as a parallel universe. There are a few science fictional elements in the earlier stories of this series, which are absent from the later novels.

Terry Brooks' Shannara books represent the fantasy world as the far future of a lost technological civilization."

I think it's that condescending tone and tendency to take offense at certain insults/comments. Similar to my argumentativeness.:smallamused::smalltongue:
Seconded. You're a nice kid as long as you don't take the high road and ignore other people's arguments. Which you might not do intentionally, but thats the vibe I get from you sometimes.
...Huh. That didn't get the tone I was hoping for. :smallannoyed:
Oh well.

I do? Sorry, sometimes the arguments get lost in the flood. It's hard to reply to everything. I'm a busy man, I have tons of comics due!
...which I don't draw. Huh. :smallconfused::smallwink:

Guys, stop speaking about what you hate in the Star Trek movie, I haven't seen it yet:smallannoyed: (it's also made as a new begining, so all the previous Star Trek stuff has nothing to do with it)

Also; Science fiction require it to be future (doesn't matter how much but games like Resistance who seem scifi ain't cause it happens in the fifties) according to my teacher (we have to learn about basicly every genre in existance FYI) so none of this is science fiction (though it might have elements from scifiit just aint because of that)

Now for the other stuff:

@Maddy: I think the new avatar is nice:smallsmile:

@Crim: I personally don't think your characters look like whores but you should still have them wear something more (the one in green look like it belongs as a belly dancer for the sultan or something, and that's basicly a whore too FYI) but your art is good so I don't really mind:smallbiggrin:

Whaaaaaaaat?
Look at gorram Star Wars. It's like the first line in the movie. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

I'd say the Sovices definitely would come under the category of Sci-fi. And since they have a big role in FI... I'd say Nameless is right in it being sci-fi ish.

Yay I'm right! *dances*

I had the same reaction. Apparently Star Wars started a new genre or something (not something I have from school so ain't sure) possible the science fantasy one (magic and spaceship, YAY!)

What the-?

I missed three pages and a discussion on what constitutes Science Fiction? That'll teach me to sleep...

Still, Fat Fish Fury: Not Sci-Fi.
Sorcerer Dude Strikes Back: Not Sci-Fi.
The Pluperfect Plot: Intended to be Sci-Fi, but isn't.
Future Imperfect: Not Sci-Fi.
The Journey Home: Not Sci-Fi.

Pretty much all of ABR falls under "Speculative Fiction", and most plots have Science Fantasy elements.

Oh, and NC? Star Wars ≠ Science Fiction. It's a Space Opera, and Spec-Fic.

Holy hell. If you could split atoms like you split hairs you could power a country on fission energy.
It has robots and spaceships. That's not science fiction enough?

To deny the hyper-advanced technology already present from the Sovices... It's just silly. It may take place in a fantasy world, but it still has sci-fi elelments. As previously mentioned, the Pern series qualifies as Science-Fantasy and yet seems to have little to do with science, so a fantasy series with LOTS to do with technology MUST qualify.

Scie-fi fantacy. :smalltongue:

It has no elements of science fiction other than the advanced technology.

No extraterrestrials, no spaceships, does not happen in the future, does not speculate on the future of science, could not happen in any way in reality, ergo: fantasy.

Sci-Fi does not have to have all of those things. If I recall, there WERE spaceships in an FFF comic not long ago, they looked like giant whales. Some sci-fis don't even have space travel.

Edit: That being said, I do not believe it is a purebred of either genre.

Yeah, I probably could. But I'm not Dr. Manhatten yet.
Star Wars has WWII dogfights, storylines ripped straight from Arthurian legends, swordfighting, and magic. It's not Science Fiction, there is no solid grounding in science anywhere in the series.

It's set in a futuristic world with advanced science, robots and laser guns, it's a freaking sci-fi fantasy god damn it! :smalltongue:

It was intended to be Sci-Fi, but dragons, vampires and mages turned up in the first few comics, so the Sci-Fi part went out the window.

Nameless and MM were commenting on P3, which hasn't featured spaceships yet. It's assumed they're there, Fort Longcat was built in that era for example, but we haven't shown any in comic.

I should make a P3 comic one of these days. I have the opportunity while we're waiting on Lying to make a FFF one.

Fantasy has magic. Science fiction has science and no magic (it could possibly happen in the real future).

ABR has magic, ergo it is fantasy.

Ah, I see. I misunderstood. Still, I'm looking for the comic I was referencing to be sure I actually saw it. It was either MMs or Lying's.
