It's been a while since we did a wierd avatar week, so I feel it's time we did something.

Anyways, i'm coming up empty on what to do, so can we come up with ideas on what to do?

Alright, this kept getting shunted aside, so I'm-a gonna say this once and see what happens.

*ahem*

STEAMPUNK WEEK.

STEAMPUNK WEEK.
*shunts into the corner*

How about... party week?
Everyone's avatars have party hats and confetti and that sort of stuff!
Screw it. Even if we don't have a party week, once this week is over, I'm adding a party hat to my avi anyway.

I fully support this idea. I may have to make a new avatar, just so I can Steampunk it.

I dither between Steampunk and Musical (and if musical, pre-dibs on reworking Serpentine's).

How about a hybrid music/steampunk week? I mean come on steampunk is epic and requires music, and musical instruments are only made more awesome by steampunk.

Assuming that music week would be our avatars with musical instruments.

Recaiden

I do already have a version of this avatar with a viola...

But I support steampunk week.

Problem with musical week is, instruments are kinda hard to draw.

Unless you mean characters from Musicals. In which case, dibs on Dr. Horrible.

Steampunk. No, freakin', contest. Rutskarn has been pushing for one of those for practically forever. If we do a steampunk week, I'll help make some avatars this time. That is, unless this week should fall on June 21st - 28th. I'm out of town that week.

I'll vote for Steampunk as well.

My pbp games aren't progressing fast enough for me to change to the next character in the game yet as an avatar, and these characters do not work Steampunked, so I am DEFINITELY going to be requesting my Steampunk character from the setting my friends and I are working on: Kairos, engineer of Three Bullet Sign.

I wonder if anyone can draw a balisong screwdriver...

Well, how about instead of just XKCD, we do an "Other Webcomics Week" where you do your avatar in the style of another comic? (If we did it, though, I'd be torn between doing an XKCD-style version of Krugg and Chicken (http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd40/rtg0922/KruggIS.png) and something Dinosaur Comics related. Ooh! Or maybe something from Kukuburi or Daisy Owl; I already did one (http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd40/rtg0922/Steve1.png) from the latter anyway...)

Also, I'm just not a fan of Steampunk. Sorry guys. *Dodges stones, tomatoes*

XKCD is about maths, science and language. It fits yours perfectly. Remove the eyes and the fingers and change the feet. Remove any colour and add some text, like for example "I'm not playing till i'm in 4th edition".

or maybe "Binary code rulezzzz!!!!!111!one!!!zero"

Quincunx
2009-05-29, 03:19 AM
For those who prefer detailed avatars, steampunk; for those that don't, XKCD? I had Ichneumon's worry about steampunk, but running those simultaneously would work. (Besides, can I ever argue against line avatars?) Steampunk types need to start laying down avatars now, though, to gain momentum.

Tempest Fennac
2009-05-29, 03:55 AM
Wouldn't it make sense to have the XKCD Week first to give people making avatars more time for a Steampunk Week? (The XKCD avatars don't look lake they would take that long to make so having that week first while keeping them both as separate events makes sense to me.)

There's no need for passive-agressive threats. :smallsigh:

And there's no real set tradition for June (or july) avatar weeks like for Febuary and Gender-bender month. It's pretty much a wild card season.
If i'm not being fair then that's just personal prejudice. As this is my avatar week, I can choose what or what not to accept. If you want XKCD so bad, run the next one. I may be against it, but that is just again, personal prejudice. The final decision will be in your hands.

I'm not attacking you, I'm just not informed enough in the traditions of these weeks, but I never thought it was a rule that the person that suggests to have a special week gets to say what kind of a week it will be.

no, but I did start the week, and usually, unless its a tradition like Gender Bender or Mistaken Identity (when is Mistaken Identity anyway?), they get to choose what the week is.

I think that's because someone generally says "OK guys, [future] week is [theme] week!"

Whereas you've asked what the week should be.

We could do a popularity war week where we try to encourage people to pick one of 2 or 3 chosen themes and see which dominates the forum. That gives loads of potential for silly "XKCD infidel!" type converversations. Some people could combine the themes and some could even be undercover agents. Would be quite amusing.

I want to be absolutely clear here. No one can 'own' an avatar week, just like no one can 'own' a thread. Once it (the idea, the thread, etc) is released into the wild, it belongs to the community.

If you are going to try and take control of this to the detriment of others, then I will ask you to stop and ask someone else to step in as the coordinator. I also would like to be clear that this person will not be me, and what is organised should not be influenced by what I have suggested, but rather, what people want.

We could vote?

Here are the ideas I have seen so far in no particular order that seem popular as in that more than only the person who suggested it seem to like it:

Steampunk/Cyberpunk
XKCD
Lolcats
Musical (maybe in combination with Steam Punk)
Mythology
Unusual avatar week

Of those Steampunk and XKCD seem the most popular.

We could vote, but the general consensus seems to be that they are both almost equally popular, so I suggest we do them both, one after the other.

I think it would be wise to do XKCD first, because the avatars would be more easy to draw and it would give more time to create the steampunk avatars, however I might be biased.

banjo1985
2009-05-29, 06:57 AM
I favour steampunk I guess, but I am most definitely biased. Lolita week still kicks it though. :smalltongue:

If we can decide within 2 days what the first avatar week will be it we could have it in the last week of June, so people have 3 weeks to make the avatars, or is that a bit to far away? We could then have the next week 2 weeks later.

And sorry fanboys, I really dont wanna do XKCD week. At least not at this present moment.I am absolutely not a "fanboy" :smallmad: I suggested XKCD first, then Steampunk later, because XKCD would be so quick and easy to do we could have it next week, even, whereas for Steampunk we'd probably want to wait most of a month anyway. Please don't stereotype me :smallannoyed:

I like pretty much all the other options, anyway, except maybe "Unusual" (what the heckers is that meant to mean? :smallconfused:). There will always be other Avatar Weeks. XKCD is a good one for now because it's so easy, and Steampunk is good for soon afterwards because it's popular and it's been suggested for ages.

I may have to get someone to do me an XKCD avatar though, because I wouldn't have the first idea of how to go about it.

...

This could prove a challenge.

So what about

15 June-21 June XKCD week
29 June-5 July Steam punk week

We could do XKCD week a bit earlier because it is more easy to draw and all.

I approve. XKCD style can't be too time - consuming.
@Mordokai: Get your old avatar back!

I'm a bit puzzled. Should I make one thread for both or just one thread or XKCD and also announce the second avatar week in it. Or just create 2 threads? I think creating two threads might actually be best.

In either case I will do so at the end of the day when more people have responded to this thread.

Pffft. You think that's a problem? I need to get a basic 'me' avatar, so I can consequently xkcd-ify it and then steampunk-ify it. This whole 'blackguard' sillyness aside, I haven't seen you go through any major identity crises.

@Ichenumon Ichunemon Icheumon Ichneumon: I think two threads would be best.

I agree with Iche[unspellable-name] and Serpentine's suggestions. XKCD, then Steampunk.

Seconded.!

I support this, but perhaps we could move them forwards by a week? The important thing for Avatar weeks is to get them going before they run out of steam, and as xkcd won't require much preparation, could we start it on the 8th of June? That gives us a week and a half to get ready for xkcd, and three weeks to get ready for Steampunk.

Also, xkcd is lowercase, unless used to start a sentence, at which point you use XKCD.

If there is a Steampunk week, I will go cyberpunk just to go against the crowd.

I don't even know how I'd make an avatar for any of the suggested weeks (except Invisible, but c'mon, that's boring).

Hey, I'm an avatarist, and I reckon I could make at least a couple of Steampunk avatars in three weeks. It just depends on who people end up requesting them from.

EDIT:
I don't even know what Steampunk, Cyberpunk, and Lolita are.:smallfrown:

Steampunk: Sci-Fi technology with Victorian style components. Brass, steam engines, etc, in time machines.
Cyberpunk: Sci-fi with similarities to the Punk sub-culture.
Lolita: Victorian era styled female outfits.

No, that was Gothic Lolita. Plain Lolita is more plain Victorian style outfits.

It's Lolita, or Loli (although Loli is more commonly used with respect to Lolicon, and we don't want to go there here).

The name comes from the novel "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov wherein the main character becomes obsessed with the 12 year old Dolores Haze, who is referred to as Lolita at times in the book.

Those were Harajuku girls. I've been to Harajuku a few times. I've been on that very same bridge multiple times.

Are you talking about the male one? That's because It's Visual Kei, which is slightly different from the original male version of lolita.
It's also a music Genre. :smalltongue:

I think this (http://www.carmenyuen.com/blog/blogpics/080509_kodona1.jpg) is a slightly better example. (One on the left)
