Nerds and geeks gather around to make this playground a place of Romance, Sarcasm, Math and Language, as xkcd week is coming,

Week 25 (June 15-21): XKCD week

What's xkcd? It's a world-famous webcomic drawn by mr Randall Munroe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall_Munroe) and hosted at xkcd.com (http://xkcd.com) and during week 25 we are going to honour his webcomic by posting with avatars drawn in the stick figure-style of his comic.

You can post here to discuss it and show of your new avatars and ask for people to draw them for you.

It would be nice if everybody could wait till the actual week before using them though.

(Also, please be aware of Steampunk week in week 27)

Plenty of time to prepare, Nameless, we'll need it, of course, the xkcd stick figure is actually quite hard to draw.

If anyone I've done an avatar for feels completely incapable of drawing an xkcd version of their avatar, I could give it a shot. (And yes, Fred, I do understand if you want to do your actual fighter avvie... *sob*)

I am probably going to use this as my avatar, unless someone skilled in the art of xkcd art can do better:

This will be my avatar:

I think 2 and a bit weeks would be just enough for everybody to hear of it, request an avatar and make one.

I love XKCD!
You can't love it that much:

How do I write "xkcd"? There's nothing in Strunk and White about this.

For those of us pedantic enough to want a rule, here it is: The preferred form is "xkcd", all lower-case. In formal contexts where a lowercase word shouldn't start a sentence, "XKCD" is an okay alternative. "Xkcd" is frowned upon.
No, I'm not pointlessly pedantic, why do you ask?

Threw mine together here. I think it looks okay, but I couldn't really think of anything to distinguish Krugg (my half-orc avatar) from a normal human in xkcd form. Maybe add a fanged mouth? Eh, I dunno.

Alright, cool.

@V: Good point, but any sort of non-perfectly circular drawing would require drawing the circle by hand, and I can't draw a circle that connects to itself.

RTGoodman
2009-06-01, 05:41 PM
Yeah, that was the one I was going to suggest, too. The only suggestion I might make would be to change the head shape a little - xkcd characters tend not to have perfect circles for heads like OotS characters do. But it's fine as is, I think, if you don't want to change it.

Amphibians include frogs, salamanders, newts, etc. They are born from eggs with gills, and later metamorphose into land-capable creatures. They have smooth, slippery skin.

Reptiles are born from eggs usually looking very much like their adult versions, cannot breathe under water in any way, have scaly skin, and are usually land-borne.

Several creatures, including, but not exclusive to, sea turtles, sea snakes, marine iguanas, that one lizard that looks like a worm and onyl has two limbs, snapping turtles, and bloody near everything that swims are sometimes mistaken for amphibians.

They are not. Sea turtle mothers lurch onto the beach and lay dozens of eggs in covered sand holes. The babies then emerge from the sand and have to run for the water that is their home for the rest of their lives. They cannot breathe underwater. Because they are reptiles. Sea-dwelling reptiles, but reptiles nonetheless. They are no more amphibians than whales.

Watching all these individual spins on the stick figure emerge is amazing. The early-XKCD styles (Nameless for extreme old-school-ness, Serpentine, Dispozition, rtg0922) are respectful. Straight limbs, curved limbs, curved arms and straight legs, dabs of color--it's all wonderful! I do wish for more insightful text to go along with all the portraiture, but it'll come later.

I still say there's far too much colour in these avatars.

Eh, xkcd uses color on multiple occasions. The really old-school stuff has a ton of color (like the infamous red spiders), Cory Doctorow always wears a red cape (http://xkcd.com/239/), various ball pits include color, and even newer strips use subtle, light colors for effect. (And occasionally (http://xkcd.com/442/), there's lots of bright, happy colors.)

I'm just saying that if you're going to make a theme avatar week in the style of something you should make avatars in the style of said thing. Stick figures, certainly, but colours on characters are very very rare. I checked the archives for the proper manner in which to depict animals in the style (filled out, with eyes) and made my own avatar thus, and I don't see why I shouldn't expect the same from other avatarists.

e: Here's (http://www.xkcd.com/585/) some (http://www.xkcd.com/537/) examples (http://www.xkcd.com/445/) of (http://www.xkcd.com/370/) animals (http://www.xkcd.com/262/) with (http://www.xkcd.com/292/) eyes. (http://www.xkcd.com/115/) I couldn't find any without.

I didn't like this idea since when it was posted, but now it's here I'm determined to have it done right.

Go for c. Part of the style is the lack of color in almost all characters. All I can think of is the House of Pancakes, the meercat, and the carebearstare, although some of the very early ones were colored.
Animals do have eyes, and are usually more detailed than people. I do not recall ever seeing a person with color. Okay, the cape. But I still think the hat and most avatars should be less colorful.

The full-size original looked great, especially with it being framed in a long rectangle instead of a square, but it looks like you resized it using Paint. You really do need a different resizing program to get Paint-atars to look smooth. I'm still using IrfanView (free!) for resizing, myself, but am open to other suggestions.

I'll make it my project for tomorrow. I'll make sure I save neurotically so I don't have to start over or anything... stupid Count D avatar...

And if you could have it wielding the sword, that would be awesome.

Because colour is not unheard of, I quite like the scant use of colour and the colour use is well within the style. Plus, I was waiting for this version.

Heh, I was just coming to mention that. Probably my favorite xkcd strip in a LONG time.

(I had to redo my original xkcd-atar. After working on Rawhide's and a few others, my original just looked terrible to me. Probably gonna edit this one since I copied the head from one I'd already made and it doesn't look right without hair, but I'm too lazy to get on it yet. :smalltongue:)

EDIT: Heh, unless I just get tired of it and fix it right now.

I've had bad luck with transparency in the past. I'll give you one real transparent and one with the matching forum background in case the first looks wonky.

I've transparented all the avvies I made, but I'm far too lazy to PM everyone and tell them.

If I made you an xkcdatar, you can find both original and transparent versions here. (http://s431.photobucket.com/albums/qq40/happyturtle-avs/xkcd/) The transparent versions have 'tpt' in the filename, and also are missing the gray border around the square.

All images are still 120 x 120.

I would bet Randall Monroe's probably heard of it, at least. I mean, OotS is a relatively famous gamer/geek comic, right? I'm SURE he probably at least saw the Gygax memorial strip.

If someone wanted, they could probably e-mail him or something and point it out. Maybe someone who's actually a member of the forums/community there, though.
