Best Female Character in the Playground (4th round of voting open! Check 9th page)

Hey everybody. I've participated in and generally liked the voting threads that have been popping up recently. I thought I'd try something similar, but different this time with knockout rounds to determine the best fictional female character of all time. Why? Well because a woman is a glamorous wonderful exotic creature of exciting mystery and we are all the better for having them in our lives. Mostly. Voting for heroes is well and good, but they do tend to be male. So let's shine a spotlight on the double X chromosome carriers and see who emerges as the grand champion!

Ground rules:

- Every character nominated must be fictional, or a fictionalised version of a real world woman. (For example merely naming Queen Elizabeth doesn't count, but Queen Elizabeth as played by Cate Blanchett will)

- Nominate them in from anywhere. Story, film, TV, cartoon, anime, webcomic, I don't care.

- Non-humans are fine, as long as they have recognisable female qualities. (Mother Wolf from The Jungle Book springs to mind)

- Due to increased interest, I will accept 160 nominations. The reason being a permutation of 4 is needed for the knockout rounds.

- After 160 nominations have been collected, I will close the nominations and begin randomly dividing our girls into pairs, through an intricate process known as "drawing names out of a hat".

- We shall then vote the winner of each pair, and knock out the loser until one girl will emerge as champion and reigning Queen of the playground. I'd like to write short descriptions of each "fight" if I may, Inquest Gamer/WWWF Grudge Match style, just for fun. Everyone else is also welcome to join in.

- Vote for the girl you like best, not just who'd win in a fight.

May I suggest separating the nominating procedure out into specific media, say one for literature, one for cinema and theatre, one for comics and cartoons, and one for games? Maybe everyone who posts gets one nomination for each until that bracket has its 64 entries, or four nominations total that they could spread out however they wanted (so four anime characters, or three literary characters and one from a video game, etc.)? Just an idea.

Nominating both for being beautiful, strong and badass at the same time, which should be more of a trend amongst female fictional characters. Note about Cate Archer: she looks campy on purpose, the NOLF games are partially a spoof on Spy movies.

With them nominated as well as the others I think we're only missing Miria (Claymore, honestly cooler than Claire, then again she is a kind of mentor/lancer/dark horse character), Eclair (Kiddy Grade), and Lafiel (Crest/Banner of the Stars). Fill me in on the etiquette regarding voting on characters you don't know. Is it a no-no to assume the character you like is better than the character you haven't heard of, or is simply being better known enough?

Basically, should there be a rule against voting in a match-up unless you know at least a little bit about both characters? On the honor system, I suppose...

I think that imposing a rule of people knowing the characters before voting would reduce voter turnout too much. The first person to know one of the characters after the match-up has been decided should give a quick presentation of who they are. It is not enough to catch all aspects of the character, i certainly know i couldn't begin to do that for any of my nominees, but it will give people who don't know the characters a basis for voting. Or you could just be a sensible person and vote for Kaname Chidori in every match-up she's part of.

Sister Miriam Godwinson: Fanatical future Christian leader. She advocates a life of free religion, with the downside of having no political freedoms other than that. She constantly attacks the player character if you don't play as her and she is generally an annoyance.

Hecate: Hecate ruled Heaven, The Underworld and the Earth in Thracian mythology. In Greek mythology she was demoted to being merely a goddess of witchcraft. And she was thought to be evil to the core, despite being nice and kind to children. She protected children.

Kai Winn: Kai Winn was played by the actress who played Nurse Ratchett in One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest. Kai Winn was a religious leader who attempted to assassinate her political/religious rivals. She was very self-righteous and manipulative, like a female Palpatine.

In addition to being somewhat weird, due to such things as having a tendency to apply the traits of action movies to the real world and being inordinately proud of planning who had which roles during a class trip, she is generally talented and capable at most things she does. Despite all the problems her military boyfriend without knowledge of civilian life causes she has quite an ability to take care of herself in even the most critical of situations when she has nobody to rely on. Her temper often gets the better of her, however, especially in regards to her boyfriend causing serious danger or trouble for others or just disregarding her emotions despite not knowing what he does wrong, she generally calms down quickly, though.

Having a lonely childhood filled with fantasies based on detective novels, however, gave her the impression that proper detectives had to be tough, manly men, hurting her self-image significantly. After beginning to pass herself off as a boy, and even trying to convince herself that she was transgendered, she started assisting the police on tough cases, though her being a teenager meant they tended to look down on her despite her undeniable talent at detective work. Over the course of the game she comes to accept herself and conclude that you can be a skilled detective regardless of age and gender, growing more comfortable with herself and becoming more feminine, without it hurting her ambition or talent in the slightest.

Despite being a wolf and not capable of speech or writing, she succeeds in helping out the people of the land over the course of her quest, often using a very direct approach that hinges on her canine nature. At the same time she's a wolf, displaying behavior that any dog owner will find familiar.

Despite this she is not a cold person, nor does she actually like hurting others, instead her goal is to overthrow she is part of a conspiracy to overthrow a military dictatorship with a major genocide on its conscience. She is also able to conduct herself calmly and gracefully in social situations, using these skills to further the goal of her conspiracy.

Honor Harrington: the primary character of David Weber's series of sci-fi books, from On Basilisk Station to At All Costs. She's a captain/commander in the Royal Manticoran Space Navy, a small cluster of planets engaged in an interstellar war with the much larger and more powerful Republic of Haven. Personally, she's a skilled fighter in unarmed melee, swordfighting, and 'modern' ranged weapons. One of her eyes and one arm are cybernetic prosthetics, including a small pistol built into the hand, as well as having some moderate genetic enhancements and having grown up on a rural high-gravity planet. Professionally, she's one of the best space combat tacticians on either side of the conflict, matched only by her mentor Hamish Alexander and her opposite number in Haven, Tom Thiesman, and considered a boogeyman by the Havenite fleet during her rise in seniority from captain to fleet admiral. Due to a combination of her genes and her empathic bond with her telepathic treecat companion Nimitz - a sentient alien creature about the size of a six-legged bobcat - she can sense the emotions and feelings of other human beings nearby.

One a brutal warlord who violently massacred thousands, Xena found redemption, and instead became a travelling heroine trying to make up for her past deeds. Her signature weapon is her chakram (asian throwing blade ring thingie), which she can perform many awesome tricks with (in addition to just killing people). Another of her specialities is her knowledge of pressure points, giving her, among other things, the ability to stop the flow of blood to someone's brain in order to make them give her information. Plus, she can use it for surgery. Oh, and she's an expert in melee, too, both unarmed, with her sword, and occasionally using improvised weaponry.

Gabrielle (Xena: Warrior Princess)

Precious Ramotswe: Mma Ramotswe is the kind and caring, yet strongly independent owner of the titular detective agency. Approaching both the mysteries she solves and the happenings of her life in Botswana with the same wisdom, intelligence, and patience, she is a well respected figure, known for her traditional build and traditional values.

Lyra Belacqua: Heroine of His Dark Materials, Lyra has a firey personality that makes it hard for her to fit in with the scholars of Jordan College, getting along better with the street urchins and servants of her own age. Her headlong lunge into adventure catalysed by a visit from her mysterious uncle, Lyra acquits herself well, lying and cheating with the best of them, but keeping to personal sense of honor and her strong friendships. She grows as a character as the series grows in scale, eventually becoming a much more mature and responsible young girl.

Hester Shaw: A bitter and driven young woman, raised by a mechanical warrior, Hester is spurred on by a lust for revenge against the man who killed her parents and scarred her face. Her prodigious magical power and strong talent for magic ensures that she goes on to become vital in the defense of the political order of the multiverse. Kind, gentle and supportive to all around her, she is still able to shed this completely in battle to become one of the most powerful combat mages in her setting, mixing speed and oversized weaponry.

Levelheaded and friendly, her dream still is to bake bread that will bring lovers together when they eat it. The reality of her life, however, is that she has to fight in to protect her country from one of its larger, more militaristic neighbors. Fighting in every major engagement during the course of the war, events ensure that she becomes central to the eventual defeat of the invaders.

Lamia Loveless (http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk233/terraoblivion/lamia.png): A freshly made combat android sent to spy on the dimension her creators are planning to attack. Once there she befriends the people she is spying on, ultimately defecting to their side. Protective of her friends and more than willing to put herself in danger or hurting others to protect them, she still nonetheless have a sense of naivete to her due to her lack of experience with social situations.

Signum (http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk233/terraoblivion/Signum.jpg): Voiced by the same voice actor as Lamia, Signum has officially stated to be based on the previous character. There are still differences in personality. Most notably among these is that Signum lacks Lamia's naivete, instead being a jaded veteran who feels that her only true talent is fighting. She does this very well, displaying the same protective traits as Lamia, though taking them further and is willing to risk even her morality and ethics to protect those she care about.

Mia Fey (http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk233/terraoblivion/miasilence.png): A psychic and a mentor figure, Mia is a highly competent defense attorney in the craziest, most illogical court of law ever seen. As such her favorite tactics include outrageous dares to the prosecution, bluffing and generally doing things that would make a mockery of a real court. However, the courts she deal in are sufficiently crazy and stacked in the favor of the prosecution that without such stunts she would never manage to get clearly innocent people off the hook, which is always her goal as an attorney, often taking seemingly impossible cases solely because she believes in the innocence of the accused.

The best villain in any animated show ever, period, Azula is ruthless, cold and calculated. She is a Firebender, with complete mastery over all flame, as well as being able to control lightning as pictured above. Her notable deeds include almost killing the main character of the show with a blast of fire to the back while he was in his transformation sequence. She is manipulative, clever, and although she does eventually spiral into madness and loses her characteristic emotional control, this is decline into insanity is a well-developed character arc which just shows how her sociopathic tendencies have led to her downfall.

Toph is a little blind girl. Who is also "the greatest Earthbender in the world." She "sees" by sensing vibrations in the ground. She can bend metal, the first person ever to be good enough to do so. She kicks ass, takes names, and - I repeat - she is a little blind girl. This is complemented by a well-rounded personality - a typically "tough" badass exterior conceals the fact that she is still, at heart, a little girl, as evidenced by her moments when she is separate from the ground and, unable to see, is extremely vulnerable. But Toph is, undeniably, one of the strongest female characters in Avatar - her only competitor is the Firebender above.

Teenage farmgirl turned iconic warrior-maiden and French heroine of the Hundreds Years War, she received visions from God in the persons of saints telling her to drive out the English from France, and proved to be actually both inspiring and skilled as a warlord (until she falls in love at least *cough*). Gets the ending that she deserved in reality by staging a dramatic escape attempt instead of burning at the stake--but, the play is still a tragedy. The definitive female Paladin if ever there was one.

Besides her CMoA for women everywhere vs. the Witch-King, Tolkien’s Shield-maiden is interesting in that she walks the line so narrowly between courage and fatalism and could quite easily have fallen into shadow, all of which situates her quite nicely within the Norse-Germanic tradition of heroism--a field generally reserved for men. I suggest reading “Beowulf, the Monsters and the Critics” to get what Tolkien was on about here. Then again she is rehabilitated of this attitude eventually, but hey, you can't fight all the time.

The thing that I like about her is that she's a subversion of Joan’s archetype, in that she doesn't want to be treated as an inspirational symbol for her country, no matter that her great deeds on the battlefield, her magnanimous demeanor toward her charges (and of course her appearance) make this inevitable. What makes me like her even more is that she doesn’t whitewash the horrors of war or what a knight’s duty requires—mostly because she spends half of the game making up for an (accidental) atrocity she committed. Isn’t that what a Paladin should be like? I think so.

(She's the one in the armor.) Youko, otherwise known as the Red Child and Queen of Kei, fits within the ordinary-teenage-girl-who’s-really-a-royal trope and the whisked-off-to-another-world trope, but she too subverts expectations and IMO proves that these don’t need to be solely confined to silly romantic comedies or melodramas. She’s nigh impossible to like at first (but then again it’s entirely realistic why that is) but over the course of her experiences believably overcomes both her surroundings and herself to become a brave, and eventually wise and genuinely humble warrior-queen. I think the fact that she too could quite easily have gone over into amoral selfishness (and therefore failed as a ruler) and doesn’t fail to acknowledge that, is what I like about her the most—yes I’m a broken record, but I know what I like.

River Tam is not to be messed with.

Lady Eboshi is Sans (Princess Mononokes) rival and enemy. While both could be considered 'good' they have very different ideas on the future of the forest. Lady Eboshi wants to build a town, while San wants to preserve the forest. This leads to a very realistic conflict between them, while Ash-itaka, the male lead, tries to keep the peace. She has a fantastic catfight with San.


Eboshi: "Without that ancient God the animals here would be nothing but dumb beasts once more. When the forests have been cleared and the Wolves wiped out this desolate place will be the richest land in the world. And Princess Mononoke would become human."

Ash-itaka: "Princess Mononoke?"

Eboshi: "Princess of the spirits, of ghouls, beasts, and ancient gods. The Wolves stole her soul and now she lives to kill me."

Mrs Louisa Wilberforce (The Ladykillers (1955)) is a little old lady from the 1950's who takes in a lodger who turn out to be part of a criminal gang disguised as musicians. The criminals use her house as base to commit a daring robbery. Wilberforce finds out about the robbery and insists the criminals return the money, they decide to kill her. The criminals draw straws to determine who has to kill her, but end up killing each other.

The film is excellently put together and both timeless and evocative of the period, and I would describe it as the best British movie ever made. It is far superior to the recent American remake.

Balsa is a female yojimbo - a kind of wandering warrior that acts as temporal bodyguard in exchange for money. Tough but fair, understanding but no-nonsense, with surprising resourcefulness, great skill with the spear, and a will of adamantium, it's not hard to see that she's damn good at it, too.

However, there is much more to Balsa than her badassness, even if she does have that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdKiPOkh0K8) in spades (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33d9_gAncYc&feature=related). She's a caring woman who ends up being the best surrogate mother that Prince Chagum could have ever hoped for. She's a loyal friend who looks out for her own. She... does have more than a bit of an anti-establishment streak, to be blunt, too. And, most important of all, she's a real female heroine, in the sense Serpentine mentioned for Ripley. No stereotypes, no fanservice. Just a plain female warrior with a heavy load on her mind.

Also, she's a spearwoman in a medium usually dominated by swords. That has to count for coolness points :smallbiggrin:.

So I have to ask for some votes for her, because I honestly think she deserves better than dissappearing in the first round.

Yeah I assumed it was the Fables comic version and not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I cast my vote for her. That and I have no idea who Naoto is, sorry.

Here's a character description.

Latooni Subota (Super Robot Wars)

A 14 year old girl, with a very unlucky past. She was one of the many children at the School, a facility designed to produce ideal mecha pilots. Conditions at the School were incredibly brutal and inhumane, including experimentation (drugs, mental behavioring, etc), so there was an extremely high mortality rate of the students and only few graduated - and Latooni was not one of them. Her unit crashed during one of exercises, and she was left for dead, only to be discovered by Giado Verendi and Garnet Sunday, a pair of EFA pilots who semi-adopted her and gave her a family she never had. And even after that, bad things just keep happening to her, including having to fight with her old School friends, some of them dying, and similar (highly spoilerrific) unpleasantness. It seems the very world is out to make her traumatized for life.
Latooni is an extremely capable pilot, whether in a fighter jet or a giant robot. She's also very intelligent and an excellent tactician, and can hold her own even on foot as the School's hellish training left her with strength and dexterity easily surpassing most grownup humans. Latooni was extremely withdrawn at first, rarely interacting with anyone, but a warm atmosphere created by her unofficial "parents" and other fellow mecha pilots (including Ryusei Date, a huge otaku on whom Latooni has a hopeless crush - it's hopeless because he's mostly oblivious to her attraction), she's only very shy. Usually wears glasses, not seen on the picture above as that's when she's in her gothic lolita dress, which she ends up in on quite a few situations, usually against her own will. Latooni is one of your best pilots and good at piloting virtually any machine, but eventually gets her own mecha - the Fairlion (http://mahq.net/mecha/srw/og2/xam-007s.jpg). Of course, the (in-universe) designer was a dirty old man and made sure that a unit for a cute girl is equally cute as well. A similar unit is piloted by Shine Hausen, the princess of a small but important Dukedom, who has powerful supernatural abilities that allow her to predict the future but is not much of a fighter, so she needs Latooni as a bodyguard - both in and out of the robots. In fact, Latooni can remotely override Shine's controls (for example, during this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpbIO9Q17lY) attack) and pilot both units by herself AT THE SAME TIME - a testament to her skill.


The description's pretty long now and this is getting out of hand, so I'll finish now. Honestly complaining about either is silly. I won't deny that i have predominantly nominated and voted for characters created in Japan, this does not mean i believe that Japanese created characters are intrinsically better, it merely means i have a greater familiarity with Japanese pop culture. I'm quite saddened by the lack of Ryogi Shiki love going on in here. The reason is pretty clear though, everyone knows of FMA, very few know of Kara no Kyoukai. Now while I agree, Riza Hawkeye is a cool character, I will never the less defend Shiki and offer more information for her. As I believe Shiki to be quite a complex and well written character.

Odyseusses conflict with Circe is one of the highlights of a classic voyage of mystery and discovery. Circe is a strong woman, weilding supernatural power, in a world of powerful men, gods and monsters. She is the original sorceress.

I find Stargate very americanocentric and militaristic, and find it difficult to empathise with any of the characters.

EDIT: In support of Hester Shaw, who I'm sure will inevitably lose to Haruhi but oh well, Hester is probably the only female character on these lists who is not physically beautiful and yet is still a sympathetic protagonist. She is made hideously ugly by a massive facial scar, and yet is not stuffed in a fridge, is not treated one-dimensionally, and is one of the deepest and most complex characters in the books she is in. I have no doubt that if the Mortal Engines books were more popular, and other Playgrounders had read them, Hester would win, but I guess sometimes popularity =/= quality. :smallsigh:

In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew arrived at Aeaea, Circes island, in great despair and exhaustion. After resting on the beach for three days, Odysseus divided his men into two groups, and sent his lieutenant Eurylochus with twenty two men to explore the land.

When Eurylochus's party found Circe's house, they found her singing and weaving on her loom. The witch invited them to enter, and all of them followed her except Eurylochus, for he, suspecting a trap, stayed outside. Those who came in Circe treated to a meal, to which she added a powerful drug. When they had eaten their meal, she struck them with her wand, and turned them into pigs. When this happened, Eurylochus hastened back to the beach and reported to Odysseus that his whole party had vanished. And when Odysseus decided to go to Circe's house, there was no way to convince Eurylochus to go with him.

So Odysseus went by himself, and on his way to Circe's he met Hermes, who, while giving him an antidote (a plant called Moly with black root and white flower) that would rob Circe's drugs of its power.

Once Odysseus proved immune to her magic, Circe realised that he must be a great hero and invited him to her bed. Odysseus then persuaded her to free his comrades. Circe smeared their pig heads with a salve, and they became men again. Charmed by the hospitality of the witch they stayed with her for a whole year.


Circe also features in the legend of the Argonauts. Medea (Circes niece), after killing her brother Apsyrtus to avoid persuit, came to Circes island for atonement, where Circe performed a ritual of purification.

You know, Haarkla, both of the two classics teachers i've had would like a word with you about ancient Greek mythology not being culturally specific. Now that we are at it my historic method teacher would like to have a word with you about the relative worth of things that are old compared to things that are new. I would also like to point out that although the Odyssey is ancient, its status as a classic was totally forgotten in the period between the fall of Rome and the mid-19th century classicism. For most of European history the Odyssey wasn't really well-known to scholars and once it was revived to knowledge the general classicism was such that anything Greek was considered good.

It is also worth keeping in mind that the very status as a classic can prolong the lifespan of a work of art after it has lost its relevance and people have ceased truly enjoying it. At times people trying to defend its relevance attribute new meaning to a work of art, King Oedipus is the most obvious example of that. That is not the same as the work of art possessing an imminent quality making it worthy through the ages, however, it rather means that people try to create meaning for a work that they have a priori decided holds a deeper significance.

Finally Tengu has a good point that the quality of a work or its historical significance, at least the latter of which is hard to contest for the Odyssey, does not necessarily reflect upon the characters in it. It is perfectly possible for a work of art to be truly great, but possess several bad characters, just as it is possible to create a great piece of literature that works partially because of the weakness of the characters. As such it is by no means reasonable to say that because a specific work is a classic then it follows that the characters from it are good too.

There is also the fact to consider that if classic is automatically better the development of human culture would look radically different. After all in such a view we would expect most things to devolve culturally rather than evolve, just like we would expect people today to be dumber than people in the past. However, sciences from neurology to history have reached the opposite conclusion, that more complex societies breed people capable of more complex reasoning, which can be said to rhyme better with the fact that humans presumably didn't evolve from earlier hominids with a complex society fully created.

Also just wondering here, what is bad about the culturally specific? Its very cultural specificity means that it holds a resonance and a significance to the members of that culture that a classic, timeless piece might lack. To put it differently a culturally specific work that not just grows popular, but has a strong effect on those enjoying it likely speaks more deeply to the issues that concern members of that culture, than a classic piece that requires substantial work to understand on even the most superficial level. So essentially what i am saying is that there is no such thing as a work of art that holds specific, deeper value except through its reception with the audience and viewed in such a light it is entirely fair and reasonable that Circe lost, even your arguments for why she should have won hinges less on a deep enjoyment of the character than on an essentialist view of artistic merit.

That doesn't seem quite accurate to me. It is true that Homeric scholarship, particularly examining the Odyssey, rose significantly in Western Europe in the 18th and 19th century, but it wasn't so much that the text came into vogue if that's what you're saying, but because this is when serious questions started arising of the authorship and dating of the poem (or re-arising I guess I should say, since that was a major question in late antiquity too). People began re-examining the Odyssey then in part to match it up linguistically and stylistically with the Iliad and other texts of its presumptive era, but the poem had been known in Western/Northern Europe since at least the late-16th/early-17th Century when the first English translation was made, and well enough in Italy in the Middle Ages for Dante to have taken it as one of his few original contributions to Classical Myth in the Inferno. And that's not even to mention its history in Byzantium.

I agree with you that opinion or status of works like these can and does change as they're transmitted across time and place. But even as that happens though they still have a lasting, permanent affect upon the present and future due to the role they had in developing language, literature and culture beyonds its own point of origin. I think what Haarkla might have been trying to say is that a character like Sam Carter and a story like Stargate SG-1 will never have comparable influence to its competitor.

It's kind of funny though since Stargate was all about how the Ancient and the mythological had direct influence upon the present or near future.

Oh and I disagree with anyone characterizing Circe as simply a "generic evil enchantress," it's more that she's an agent of punishment for Odysseus' men who behave like pigs--and potentially for Odysseus if he does the same. Think of her in comparison to Penelope and the sailors to the suitors; I think we would have cheered Penelope if she had been able to turn the suitors into swine. (Weaving is an important point mentioned for both of them too.) She also plays a significant advisory role to Odysseus so that shouldn't be overlooked. This isn't to say that she's a strong character, but I think there's more going on than just the evil magical stuff.

While the Iliad and the Odyssey might well have been more well-known than i believed, this is not to say that they were the ancient classics the way they began being considered in the 19th century. If you look at 18th century texts and earlier the classics they focus on tend to be Roman rather than Greek, with the Aeneid as the example standing above all. Greece rather than Rome becoming the focus of classic scholarship was a gradual trend beginning in the 18th century and culminating in the early 20th century with especially Spartan terminology being prevalent in political and athletic movements.

As for Dante including Odysseus in Inferno it does not necessarily imply an intimate familiarity with either the Iliad and the Odyssey. Multiple medieval novels center on the Trojan war, however, neither of them have very much resemblance to the Iliad. Rather they were based on what the writer could figure out based on other medieval writers and whichever ancient texts he had access to, which was frequently nothing more than that it was an ancient and important war. So, not having read Inferno, i cannot conclusively tell that it is not the same at play for Dante, and given my general knowledge about medieval literature and science i am inclined to believe that is the case.

And i completely and utterly agree that the chances of Stargate having a similar influence are utterly minimal for a variety of reasons, none of which include the comparative quality of the show and the poem. Foremost among these reasons is that Stargate was created with a much larger amount of competing works and thus had no ability to become anywhere near as dominant the Iliad and the Odyssey. Basically the chances of anything, achieving that kind of influence today is virtually non-existent, the sheer amount of entertainment produced these days make it unfeasible to expect. The other primary reason is that the Odyssey and the Iliad achieved their influence through a long history of mythologization, essentially divorced from their actual quality. Their status was as early as Archaic Greece based on being the great work of the ancients and thanks to Greek scholarship and views surviving for so long, they kept being presented as possessing the wisdom and moral purity of the ancients, rather than being judged on their literary merits. Which isn't to say that they are bad literature, because they aren't, just that their fame and influence doesn't truly hinge on their quality.

As for Circe being a generic evil sorceress then i think the answer is both yes and no, depending on what aspects of her you are looking at. If you look at her as a character then she most certainly is, she doesn't really get much characterization. If you look at her as a plot element she is a flat character performing numerous important plot functions, like you pointed out. This is essentially a popularity contest for characters, rather than judgement of greatest works of art ever and as such Tengu looked at the aspects of her that were relevant for the situation at hand.

Molly Hayes is an 12-year old mutant with the ability to manifest super strength and limited invulnerability in short bursts before tiring out and requiring sleep.

When she was 11 Molly discovered along with a group of five older kids that their parents are a secret society of Supervillains who made a deal with a group of biblical giants to destroy all life on Earth except for their six children who will be gifted with immortality and dominion over the new world.

As a member of the de facto superhero group the "Runaways" Molly seeks to atone for the crimes of her lost parents, protect LA from the influx of supervillains seeking to fill the power vacuum created when the children defeated their parents and most importantly tries "not to die."

Molly usually feigns ignorance and a pure childlike innocence when dealing with adults but is frequently shown to be far more intelligent and slightly cynical when all the cards are on the table.

It is often implied that she was the most traumatized by her parents being evil out of the team and occasionally dreams of finding out that the whole last two years of her increasingly insane life have been nothing more than just dreams.
