Actually, I should of have seen it coming. It's too early to get her to listen to Metal. ._.
Perhaps one day, when her music taste develops.

She did say that she liked the Kazoo version of Enter Sandman by Metallica. Unfortunately, the actual version did not please her. We have at least made some progress.

OK, I wasn't explicit last time (or ever, honestly), so while I listen to Black Eyed Peas, is there anything, what's the word, notable about the songs you do like? Matching up by genre isn't working so maybe there's some other sort of hook. (So far Black Eyed Peas has got danceable beats as well as a bit of a song over it. There might be some compatible stuff on the fringes of alternative hip-hop where the DJs remembered to make their synth tuneful, but ALL of the usual "but this is better than kee-rap, just try it" DJs will be strikes. That's NO Muse, NO Atmosphere, NO Sage, just don't.)

I've met a lot of them. They listen to modern pop and modern R&B, but then when they actually begin to understand what music is, and music theory on some level, they begin to appreciate different types of music, perhaps whilst still listening to modern pop and R&B.
And by the way, yes Lady GaGa is pretty good, but I prefer Pink.

(whaps Nameless upside the head) Did I not just say "NO Muse"? Sad to note, the songs which I was going to reference, while referred to repeatedly on my home board, weren't ever named there, and the CD in question is in storage somewhere. Where, exactly, I no longer know. Catching up with the resident expert in independent hip-hop will take a day or more and explaining what I'm after will probably take another day.

Someone has stripped most of the '80s-era Madonna off of YouTube. Probably the lady herself. Shame--it would fit. "Frozen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6SDMCLN5oM&feature=fvw)" is still available, but that was in the '90s and is less beat-driven and swans around more. It won't be a great match but it will be listenable.

Alice Cooper can stand as a diagnostic song although that one isn't impressing me much. There can be no substitute for flinging the weirdness of Bowie, and it might be embedded way back in the consciousness. Alternately, let me reassemble the late-'80s roller rink mix, heavy on the female vocalists, while you metalheads writhe in pain: a dose of Blondie, a dash of Cyndi Lauper, a dash of Joan Jett, whoever it was that did "Funkytown", stuff like that.

Raistlin1040
2009-06-07, 03:13 PM
Mmm, she would like Magic Dance, it's so pop. Doubt she'd have an affinity for his best stuff (The Berlin Trilogy and Ziggy) though.

I find that list odd, as Joan Jett and Blondie are awesome while Cyndi Lauper is decidedly not. Also it needs more Pat Benatar.

I found all this out when I once accidentally met future me. He thought it would be wise to inform me of my own child.

Cake is an excellent suggestion, both the music and the food group. (What? It is.) As for Cyndi Lauper, while there is probably a more recent anthem for girlish girl-power by now, her songs will still work. The barrage of metal, on the other hand, is turning into an e-peen contest.

On the whole "converting someone's taste in music" thing: people can and do have different tastes in things, and it's not the end of the world (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bmxyj6iInMc). Well, this specific job isn't so bad. There's a dumb script and everything, but we're really not selling anything. We give away free 2-week trials for the fitness center we work for. For them, that's how they rope in business.

My first one was actually door-to-door sales. Obnoxious people, really, it wasn't until I was halfway to whereever they were going to hawk their crap that I found out what I was really going to be doing. The telemarketing job actually came later: quit that one when I was still in training. I don't very much appreciate being lied to about important things like the status of the school we were working for's degree accreditation...

Arrive at "office" - 9 am (maybe even 8)
Leave for whichever neighborhood we were going to menace - 9:30
Arrive - anywhere between 10 to 11
Leave - around 6

OMG, I had a job like that - selling magazines door-to-door. Except we all traveled to different areas and stayed in hotels and all that. We were like teenage and early-20's fugitives or something. And we were always encouraged to spend our money as soon as we got it, so there was no, "I'm tired of this crap -I'm taking my cash and going home!"

We got bonuses for selling more than...however much or for getting paid in cash. The reward? A party, where the boss would get everyone trashed. Yay for responsible adults.

Well, I get to go on holiday with a family to a place I really don't want to go to and spend time with a family I would rather not spend time with, then when we come back I get to spend the rest of summer doing a job every day of the week which I really don't want to do.

I'm going car-hunting right now. My car finally took the ten count over the weekend.

Looked at my first one yesterday, and I'm talking to my bank tomorrow to see what can be arranged in terms of auto loans.

Meh, I much prefer the smaller Pterosaurs. The Quetzalcoatlus truly was awesome, as were most Azhdarchids, being like the flighted giraffes of the Mesozoic. The size, however, removes a lot of the maneuverability, unlike medium sized Pterosaurs, such as my favorite: The badassiest reptile ever, Istiodactylus...

I'd want the power to be really badass. I wouldn't actually have any specific powers, but if a bus, let's say, is pulling out of the bus stop and I just missed it, I'd suddenly be able to run up the side of the bus and ride on top. Or if I'm being mugged by six dudes, I'd be able to take them all out while using one of them as a shield. Or let's say I join the army, I'd get shot, like, thirty times, but then I go on to defeat the entire opposing army, then die a heroic death.

What kind of games do you want? They're there. Unless you've already played them.

Fred, that pie looks demonic or something.

I have plenty right now. All my money is just going towards 40K right now. Fallout 3 just features prominently because they keep coming out with new DLC's.

...and thus far all the "classics" people have told me are must play's have turned out to be disappointing. I'm looking squarely at you, Baldur's Gate...

Planescape? The Elder Scrolls:Arena? Warcraft 1 and 2? Pac-man? MAster of Orion II? Crusader: No Remorse(Or maybe No Regret. They're both good, but one is much better. I just don't remember which one.) Quest for Glory?:smalltongue:

Failing to keep my attention beyond what the next one-liner was going to be?

Monotonous quests?

Being absurdly easy to get yourself royally screwed early on?

Over half the characters being exceedingly irritating?

Slogging through a boring and pointless dungeon just to get things started?

Are you confusing BG and BG2, by any chance? They're quite different.

That's your problem, not the game's.

Monotonous quests?

Were we playing the same game?

You were playing with a bard, for heavens sake! :smalltongue:

Over half the characters being exceedingly irritating?

Try the other half?

What the man in the hat said.

Were we playing the same game?

Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal?

Run to the crypt-kill a bunch of stuff
Run to the hills-get trapped by red dragon (usually above your ability to fight)-kill a bunch of stuff
Go into the Planar Sphere-kill a bunch of stuff

You were playing with a bard, for heavens sake! :smalltongue:

Half-elf fighter mage for a good playthrough, human swashbucker (or whatever the thief variant was) for evil :smalltongue:

Try the other half?

Did. No point in having variety if half the characters make you want to kill them out of spite.

I love learning pop stuff. For the first six years of my piano career, I never played anything but classical music and was getting seriously fed up when my dad bought me a book of songs from the Lord of the Rings. That kept me amused for a while...and then I discovered an entire BOX of Dad's 70s and 80s music for guitar and piano: Sting, the Police, Tracy Chapman, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, REM, Indigo Girls. There's nothing like learning to play a beloved song. It FEELS SO GOOD.

Until I was about twelve, I would have jumped at the chance to quit. But my mom made me keep at it even though I hated my teacher.

Then we moved and I never got a new teacher, so I could play whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Then it became a recreational activity. I quit for about two years because of school, but I picked it up again this spring and I'm really glad I did.

There would be only one thing that could make me learn to play an instrument, and as corny as this sounds, it's THE girl, whoever and wherever she is doesn't matter.
