Random Banter!!!

For everything you want to talk about, but don't want to start another thread for. Also for completely random things that you feel the need to share with everyone. And maybe even some discussion of these random things--I think that's a good idea, how about you?

That being said, there are rules. Which are laid out below. If you are not familiar with them, please read them. If you are already familiar with them, fine, don't, it's your choice. (But you'll only have yourself to blame if you forget one of the rules and accidentally break it. :smallsmile: )

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

The time loop . . . my theory has finally been proven correct! It's so persistent even the threads are rehappening!

Poor time loop. This has thrown it.
Now: to meticulously integrate into this thread every single thing that suffers from the RB time loop.

So how's this for a random entrance into the random banter thread:

I made a TV show. :smallbiggrin:

It's just a cable access show, but it was shot in a fully equipped studio and as producer I had to find a director, camera people, audio person, design the set, and book the acts (it's a showcase for local singer/songwriters).

I turned in the DVD to the station back on Friday, and I'll find out the air date probably on Tuesday. Now I have to start planning the next shoot. :smalleek:

I was very happy with how it turned out, though, the crew were excellent and we go some really artsy shots and transitions, and the musician was awesome both for the performance and the interview. When it airs, it's also simulcast on the internet, so I'll be sure to let everybody know.

So, strange story...

I've never had a mobile phone. Apart from thinking they were incredibly annoying and that people were even more annoying when discussing private things over the phone while in a train ride, I just didn't want to spend the money. (Yes, we get them for free, too.)

So, now, my grandfather gave me his old one as a present. Which, by the way, is one of those 200-buck-things with a huge screen and a camera. He also sent me an email in which he explained I should ask him if I need any of the features explained.

This feels weird. I didn't even know my grandfather had a mobile phone. Or a computer.

I'm scared now. Third day in a row it's been hot, sunny and cloudless. I've been out since eleven, got back about half an hour ago and it's sweltering inside and out.
I really pity the poor children doing exams; it's too hot to concentrate.
Oddly, I didn't see that many college aged people outside; only about two or three dozen or hour. I saw a lot of primary children out though.
Must be mass skiving.
Too hot to be educated.

Here is a good trick for you peeps. Use a double ended jack, plug it into the headphones thing and the microphone thing, download some recording software, (e.g. audacity) and then just record the songs from youtube, deezer etc.

And pretty much no loss in quality because it is all electronic. ^_^

lossless compression = compression that does not lose quality
digital audio = audio stored digitally (i.e. in a computer format), examples include CDs and WAV files. There is actually a bit of a loss of quality converting from analogue to uncompressed digital, but once it's in an uncompressed digital format, it will always remain the same quality as long as it stays in an uncompressed or lossless compressed digital format
analogue audio = audio stored or broadcast in an analogue signal, this signal degrades the further it has to travel and every time you rerecord it, examples include tape cassettes and radio

Basically, you're converting it from a signal that has already been degraded several times to a signal that degrades over distance, then you're degrading the signal again several times to convert it back and then compress it again.

About the only reason it doesn't sound like a radio signal is because it only has to travel as far as the cable, but you've still made a lot of redundant steps and lost quality.

Which may or may not render the exercise completely futile and the resulting product unenjoyable. Might depend on the original quality being recorded, though I imagine if someone was going to all of that trouble they could find sommat to record the data being sent to their hardware's audio.

But then I might have an optimistic view of how things actually work and a pessimistic view of what programs have been produced that can be obtained relatively easily for such purposes or at least adapted to such purposes.

So I'm excited that I might be trying my hand at DMing a bit over this summer. And I've found, much to my chagrin, that as time goes by and I become used to my adult body, I can't take as much of the heat of summer as I used to be able to even a few years ago during my adolescence. :smallfrown:

Oh god the people who love that character far too much for his or their own good always creep me out. I roomed with a guy like that, and while I love him to death, sometimes the outlooks he expressed just made my heart sick, and I've actually been on some of those medications.

Do key changes make you inexplicably happy? I've just listened to two songs with key changes in them, one a major song, the other a minor, and in both incidents, a quiet, usually timid voice in my head said, "Yay! Key change!" (In that colour. :smalltongue:)

Happy really isn't the best word to use here, since this personified feeling exclaims its love of key changes even in the most depressing of songs written in minor keys.

To All about my poem that was considered 'plagiarized': I had to write a poem for some sort of literary magazine in which every student must put in one or two little drawing, and one or two poems... I had three poems in there, mainly because the third is was a haiku (Fairly small, and It looked nice where it was) that I wrote on the stop. The principal is trying to say I read it and then remember it subconsciously. Which I'm fairly sure I didn't, but then again it's subconsciously. :smallannoyed:. Normally I'd say that whomever is accusing you of plagarism would actually have to prove did it, but then I remembered you're in High School where the burden of proof is determined by how much the parents complain :smallsigh:

It just doesn't seem fair that, because I wrote a poem similar to one found on the internet, that is so vastly large, I don't have a metaphor to use here, I am a cheater. If it's not graded, and it's not going to change the outcome of the page either way, why should it matter if it resembles a poem that I unknowingly copied, and if I were to plagiarize, why would I do it here? Realistically, one might on a very large thesis or something, but a 3 line poem is just illogical. That doesn't mean however, I'm saying "I stead but it's different" Or "If I did cheat it doesn't matter". It does matter. But the logic behind their arguments is complete bogus.

I've never seen your poem before... and since they are both such simple concepts, would this be cheating or plagiarizing? I still put all the effort into writing my poem, and although it resembles yours, it was my concepts, in the ways it differs.

Like I said before, you're well within your rights to demand that they actually prove you plagarised. They actually have to show what you copied, otherwise you're only taking ideas, which is sometimes in rather poor taste but isn't illegal. There's a reason that many colleges have a full-on trial system for determining if someone plagarised a paper. It is a hell of a lot more complicated than "hey, these two works are sorta similiar."

All I have to say on the matter is this: people who are in a position of authority or power and abuse it, in any way, are despicable. Principals, teachers, police, dictators, whatever. Believe it or not, there are only so many ways the words of the English language and be rearranged. The posibilities are NOT infinite. So, the likelihood of you writing something that is in some way similar to something else already out there is more likely than NOT. Also, agreed, the Internet is nearly boundless. You can find damn near anything on it - including something you want to make someone feel bad about. If it was a big deal, they would do something about it. I hate to come across as defending the administration when they're being lazy (and make no mistake, they're being lazy here), but it seems like they're already trying to keep it from becoming a big deal by essentially offering you a plea bargain. Considering how seriously schools normally take plagarism, think about what the punishment would be if you actually had done it. It's usually an auto-fail for the class at least.

Since it seems a bit odd that she would read through the entire thing and decide to run a plagiarism check herself for every entry or even just every entry from Mr. Mud, especially since the compilation has nothing to do with the actual completion of a course.

Doesn't even have the excuse of looking out for the school's rep as a matter of course due to it not attempting to winnow out submissions.

I bet the administration is treating this a lot more like you are than you think. But we're dealing with a parental complaint, they can't just sweep it away. They either have to do a full investigation (which, to them, is a petty misuse of time and resources) or just come up with an arbitrary punishment and then say "there, we did something about it. Go away."

Unfortunately, they picked the wrong kind of issue to do this with. Plagarism is serious. Accusations of plagarism are serious. If you didn't do anything wrong (and I don't think you did) then stand up for yourself.

Exactly. Which is why I think it's just something personal and petty. Mud must have done something to upset her, pulled a prank or cut a class or something, and she's trying to get back at him. It's hard for me to imagine a sane, responsible adult acting this way.

If it were me and I really though something was plagarised, I'd be meeting with the teacher, researching the other article, meeting with the student and parents - there's a lot more that should go into it than "I don't like you and someone said they saw another similar haiku somewhere (come on - a HAIKU?!?!) so now I'm going to punish you because I don't have anything that can stand up to scrutiny". Ugh - I don't need to be this disgusted with the public education system this early in the morning.

Meanwhile my brother and cousin were at home, and the news didn't come out, until about 3 years later, that they did it. All blame goes to meeeeee :smallbiggrin:! (:smallannoyed:, worth it I suppose, but I mean STILL.)

Mrmud's case is not strong. A poem strikingly similar enough to be spied by a non-student can be justified as not drawing from the same pool of inspiration, but if it's one millimeter away from anonymous platitudes (and I would hope it would be, to be included in a magazine), defending it as coincidence to someone who isn't enmeshed in high school platitudes will be near-impossible. Perspective about high school, the underclassmen, and revenge plots thereof tends to snap into place five minutes after getting the diploma, so it's not terribly likely that this is delayed revenge. Your best defense is the shaming one of arguing that both poems were so hackneyed that anyone could've churned them out, and in this case, they did.

On the other hand, defending your reputation with your life (or with slamming down the phone on a principal) is excellent. Even I, who itch to drop the ban-hammer on a plagiarist, am given pause by that. Admit nothing.

There are a few universities that can expel a student for plagarism. I only said it can happen, not that it probably would. No one's getting expelled for a first offense, but someone that's dumb enough to try repeatedly and get caught...

Well I went to sleep revised in the sun for most of today and I'm just dandy.

Well you living as you do in London probably never even saw the sun all day. Only thick clouds of pollution and mucky muck muck like smog.

'Course, this sunburn'll turn out to be a tan and by tomorrow I'll be medium brown.
Next week I should be well done.
Then some god Up There or Down There will pick out the human steak to have with their Celestial or Demonic Rabbit Food.
It's what we get for living in the equivalent of a lobster tank I suppose.

Those were good times.

The first-ever Star Wars legos came out around the same time as Episode 1 did, 1999, when I was eight. We were IN LOVE WITH THEM. But the Bladewing was special because I made it completely from scratch. It weighed about five pounds...it was really dense.

:smalleek: I did the same thing with the ships I made! They were cool... I wonder what happened to them. I also took Lego's X-Wing, and span in circles, letting inertia prove that their design was structurally inferior to mine. :smalltongue:

We didn't have enough k'nex to do anything fancy with them, but we'd make castles and houses and stuff from our Legoes.

Watch, tomorrow I bet I'll creep into my brother's room while he's at school, and steal all the Legoes back. :smalltongue:

Upon reflection my sunburn is just my tan coming in quickly. I was only out for two (ish) hours today! Fine, three including my hour revising on the Oven That Is Actually The Doorstep.

I was actually going to save this until I'd seen the whole thing; but the confusion is too much. Here goes:
About a month ago Best Friend ordered me a virtual knifepoint (MSN conversation means it was virtually virtual too!) to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena. Checked it out on TV Tropes and I thought, sure why not.
I only really started during half term for fairly obvious reasons.
I am now on episode twenty nine of thirty nine.
Sure, the roses were everywhere, but that's symbolic, I can take it. Rebirth, love and so on. Absurdly powerful school councils? Easy! Practically an anime staple.
Fencing? Better than card games. Lots of stock footage - sure. Ceremonial though, this.
Upside down council, magical lifts to coucil rooms with mysterious visual metaphors (or something? Are they even real? They interact with them? I just saw her do that!) and strange Greek Chorus moments are . . . confusing. But I can take that. I certainly don't think I'll understand everything here.
Black roses?
O . . . kay . . . just Fencing II. Ah. There's the stock footage back.
Coffins? Whu'?
Implied incest? Twincest? Implied twincest? Love triangles? Never seen so much of it before in one show, but I can handle - wait what.
He slept with - but didn't he, whith her? And him? But isn't she with her who's with him? But he's with him too? And she loves her, who blatantly loves the other female main character. No subtext there.
But now she wants him who wants everyone, and has slept with the manwhore (pardon my Klatchian) and where does this purple haired man come into it?!
And now they sleep together on the same bed? Is it even a bed? But holding hands and gazing into eyes - when did her short hair get that long?!! ANd she so just slept with her brother. ANd her 'girlfriend' (unrequited?) is just next door?
And brother loves 'girlfriend'?
CARS?!
WHY ARE THERE CARS! Sure, I guess it's just a metapor for the journey and - why can this car drive itself and magically unfasten the shirts of bishie men? Some of whom now also have miraculously long hair? (Untangled as well)
How can the cars drive into the school? There's no way it can fit through the doors? Why doesn't anyone ever mention this to anyone? - And now this twin is sleeping with him?
Can't they even remember being almost abducted? And why don't they react to someone else (a loved one? I don't know) being in the same car knowing all this secret stuff?
And now their step - mother - to - be is her?! But there's no way?
And what is this with the girl butt monkey and the episode with the cow?! Does she become one or is it psychological? Or something? And the EGG?!
Is she really that stupid?
Doesn't she know anything? And she tolerates this nine (ish) year old boy who does all her homework so is presumably more of a genius than normal for this school but stalks her utterly?
HOW DID THE CARS GET ONTO THIS OTHER MAGICAL TOWER underneath the upside down revolving castle? Why does noone comment on this? How can they drive on walls?

It's saying something when the escaped boxing kangaroo (in a school), two escaped horses (both on separate occasions), the bull, the cow episode, the egg episode and the Freaky Friday episode, not to mention this miniature mouse - monkey - purple - type - thing barely even get a rating on the What - The - Hell - O - Meter.
Or all the disappeared parents (does noone have any parents), or the sopa opera style love with an incurabl illness setting out to make her (he reciprocates her feelings) utterly despise him during his last week alive.
Or the freaky second transformation scene. Why does she disappear but not her clothes? Why does she then appear (from the back) buck naked and then reclothe herself? Why does a rose tree grow out of her old uniform?
WHY?!
WHY EVERYTHING?!!

TV Tropes has it right. Mind. Screw.
Utterly.

I'd argue that swimming is more enjoyable, but not everyone knows how to swim. Biking, on the other hand, you'd have to be pretty sheltered to not know how to do it. So biking is second best.

Swimming is fun and all but it's not too fun in the middle of winter or when it's cold. Cycling on the other can be done year around by throwing a jacket on. As my sig shows i LOVE cycling. Where I live a cool little thing just ended called May is Bike Month. The goal is to reach 1 million miles collectively by pledging miles and then reaching them. It's been happening for the last 4 years around here and this year it broke 1.25 million miles. I pledged 300 miles but ended up going over which is great.

On a side note does anyone else ride a fixed gear?

You don't want to see Utena if you value your mind. It's really good, but about five inches thick in symbolism.

Utena was crazily symbolic and all those layers (I know there's at least eight because those ones I figured out myself) can make it really hard going and downright confusing at times?

Excel Saga is just mad. I don't know what combination the makers of that were on, but it must have inolved both LSD and magic mushrooms. And cocaine.

There were moments that captured my attention, a couple that even made me think "this is a good scene", but the majority of it was laughable. In every single scene of Edward's, she spent at least a paragraph describing his appearance and how perfect (using that exact word) he was.

Like stew? Ummm... I don't think so, unless I've been doing it wrong for a very long time. It's usually (in my experience, at least) served over noodles, but I could see it working with bread. Sounds pretty good, in fact.

@VV: How do you determine whether a given foodstuff is "stewy enough" to serve on bread? Does it turn into a Family Guy marathon in your mouth?

I have, and love it. I make a variety with potatoes in it. AND your preferred metod of eating it is wonderful. It's how I eat beef stew or anything else suitably...stewy enough, slathered over some bread. Mmmmmm.

I'm good thanks. My history exam went ok as well, but I forgot who Hindenburg was and so was talking about some German war hero dude by accident, but it's not like I'll lose marks for it. Also, I was in a breeze and as freezing throughout the whole exam. But I think I still did fairly well

Hindenburg - President of the Reichstag, opposed Hitler, died at some point in the early 1930s (1932/1933).

We had that question, but the caption on the picture above said "President Hindenburg". It sort of gave the answer away. :smallbiggrin:

It's'all good then.

French exam did not quite go so well. I'm meant to be aiming for a B, I think I'll be lucky to get a C. :smallfrown:

You know the Rules of Spousal Indifference as well as I do, Cristo Meyers: if party one doesn't care sufficiently to exercise the veto, party two may decide to do whatever he or she wants to influence the appearance of party one (although "and now you're heading back to the boring rack", in the middle of a clothing store, did catch me by surprise). In your case, though, I imagine the veto is undermined by formal wear being necessary for work.
