I've always liked magic swords that really make or break a battle. Some powerful ideas to use in a campaign. Feel free to add your own, or give your opinion.

Blade of Competence
Depending on its power blade grants the wielder 5, 10, or 20 temporary fighter levels, with a pre-selected set of feats. This changes overall character level, hitpoints, bab, etc. As soon as the blade leaves the person's hand the levels and all related bonuses are lost. Losing hitpoints can potentially kill them if they're injured beyond their normal health. If a wielder has real fighter levels they can choose whether to use their own fighter levels or the sword's, but cannot benefit from both. The fighter levels stack with other class levels however.

Blade of Universal Smiting
One side of this greatsword is formed of alchemical silver, the other half of cold iron allowing it to harm creatures weak to either metal. On any successful hit the wielder of this blade can convert half of their damage to instead be their choice of any one kind of elemental energy or positive/negative energy. A positive energy attack can only harm undead though, not heal the living.

Blade of Spell Duplication
This sword does not provide any protection from magic, but will copy any attack spell that harms the wielder and instantly cast the identical spell back at the magician, at the magician's own caster level. This does not work on area of effect spells, merely spells that specifically target or are aimed at the wielder. If a pure positive/negative energy spell is cast on the wielder it attack the caster with whichever version will harm them.

Blade of Resurrection
If the wielder of this blade dies while holding it in their hand, it instantly casts Resurrection to revive them, still holding the sword. Each time it does so they lose a level or two points of Constitution. The resurrection spell is only prevented if they die in an area in which magic can not function, or if the means of their death instantly destroys the sword as well.Touching a dead body with the sword does nothing.

Blade of Plane Jumping
Whenever a creature is struck by the Blade of Plane Jumping the sword also attempts to cast Plane Shift on them to send them to a random plane. The blade can also be used to cast Plane Shift as a controlled spell three times a day.

Blade of Binding
A 100 foot area around the blade is under a permanent Dimensional Lock effect. Any creature that touches the sword has Dimensional Anchor cast upon them for one hour with no save. This includes the wielder of the blade.

Blade of Opposition
Should the wielder will it an exact duplicate appears of any creature that attacks the wielder at a range of twenty feet or less, similar to a Mirror of Opposition. The duplicate will instantly attack the original, only paying attention to others if they interfere with its goal. It and its equipment vanish if it dies or kills the real person. The blade can create four duplicates a day.

Barrier Breaker
Anyone carrying this sword can pass through any magical barrier, such as a blade barrier, wall of force, wall of fire, prismatic wall, or forcecage, without any harm or impediment whatsoever. Doing so leaves the barrier intact. If the wielder attacks a magical wall with the blade the barrier is instantly destroyed.

Blade of Cloning
This sword allows the wielder to create one Eidolon per day at half your level. You can gain temporary negative levels to boost the Eidolon's level, but not beyond your own normal character level.

Most of these would qualify as major artifacts.

Yeah, they're all pretty damn powerful. The only one that wouldn't be an artifact I think is the Blade of Universal Smiting. Some of them wouldn't necessarily overpower characters though.
