View Full Version : Song in the Playground

So I got this idea from all the voice recordings going on in the You Thread recently. Basically, the idea is that we do a collaborative song (with or without music video), one line each, or something similar. Then someone (quite possibly me) would stick them all together with a backing track (perhaps also done by playgrounders) and hopefully get some semblance of music. It'll be really good if it works, and really fun otherwise.

Questions:
1.
a)Should it be a cover or original?
b) If Original, would you write for it?
c) If cover, which song?
2. Do you think this would work (given enough work)?
3. Are you in?

(completely incidentally, I think this may be the first thread I've ever made...)

It should be a cover, at least the first should be if we do multiple, a song that many people would know. And I'm in.

I say original, and then we try and cover something. It's hard to find a song that is suitable and everyone knows... I'm down.

Okay, you did the questions, I've got my answers.

1.
a) I'm fine with either, although doing a cover would be easier.
b) I'd write some of it, but I don't have much of a talent for music. How much I write would depend on how long we would want the song to be and how many people would be taking part in the writing.
c) So many to choose from, but right now, "We Will Rock You" by Queen.

2. I think it would if there was enough effort put into it.

3. Definitely.

If I had a halfway decent mic, I'd sign up. I think a cover would be best.

Cover. If I can find some way of doing a decent quality voice recording and I like the song we pick, I'll do it.

I think it should be a cover. Making an original Good song with loads of people would be too hard. :smalltongue:

Seeing my singing abilities are, well... crappy, I'll leave this to others.

Now lets see how my two brothers will perform :smalltongue:

1.
a) We have enough creative people here to be able to make an original piece, but I don't mind doing a cover, though that would be kinda lame with the talent on this forum. Damn difference of tastes...

b) lolno; I'm a writer, not a lyricist.

c) IF we do a cover, I'd suggest something with a vast possibility of instruments. An easy example would be something by Polyphonic Spree, but I don't think many would like to do any of their songs.

2. Yes, as long as we don't do anything too narrow.

3. If I find can record something at a friends house, I might just join this. All I need is the music.

P.S. I'm not back, I just happened to see this when I stopped by to check messages.

IF anyone wants:

Off-white marble counters
Where the counters count the greed
But they had nothing there to counter
The masked man who did the deed

And we were gone, course we weren’t ever there
Though you weren’t far wrong, you were still miles away
You interrupted our song, which wasn’t very fair
‘cause we were almost done, but you stole our state of mind away
Oh yeah!

*Solo 1*

Enumerating sickliness
As his fingers flick a bead of
His PC, calculator, abacus
Oh God above, show them some love
Or kill them

Throughout the years there have been
Many a person whose job
Is putting a final price on sin
Oh god above, show them some love,
Or kill them

And we were gone, course we weren’t ever there
Though you weren’t far wrong, you were still miles away
You interrupted our song, which wasn’t very fair
‘cause we were almost done, but you stole our state of mind away
Oh yeah!
*Solo 2*
And we were gone, course we weren’t ever there
Though you weren’t far wrong, you were still miles away
You interrupted our song, which wasn’t very fair
‘cause we were almost done, but you stole our state of mind away
Yeah, you stole our state of mind away.

Okay. Since you posted that just then, I have put it to music and put it on youtube to random footage. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6C61IepGhc).

I say we cover "Never gonna give you up".
Also, I'm in. I can kinda sing. Other people tell me I sing quite well, but I don't believe them.

Or Macarthur Park.

I say we cover "Never gonna give you up".

Heh, that was my suggestion. I've got the piano sheet music lying around here somewhere...

Anyway...

1. I don't care, either's fine with me. I probably wouldn't sing, but I've got a trumpet, a baritone, two tin whistles (Eb and D), a couple recorders, a bodhran, a bass guitar, and a keyboard here, and can play each of them to some extent. So if we do music, I'm good.

2. Yeah, I think it could work.

3. Heck yes!

@xanaphia/Gwyn - The combined product, once the lyrics kick in, kinda reminds me of The Mars Volta's "De-Loused in the Comatorium" Album. Kinda cool.

Also how about:

That was cool! I guess the only thing I'd do different is change the solo's and maybe add some more depth. :smalltongue:
Just giving constructive criticism if you wanted it. Otherwise just go with the "That was cool!" part

1. Cover, probably. Lots of people here write, but it would be simpler to do something people know.

2. With the right planning, yeah

3. I'm in. I'm not a great singer, but play guitar, bass and mandolin to a pretty decent level.

Sounds awesome!

@xanaphia: Nice work. :smallbiggrin:

We should like, do a Death Metal virsion of Fly on the Wall (http:// http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RSlhNJFohI)
Kinda like what CoB did to Oops I did it again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1sguF2D1UA)

It would produce teh major lulz!

I can play drums or guitar if you want a backing track..Not sure how the drums would sound though, I don't have a decent mic setup for them :<

Just don't make me sing...I cannot...Sing...

We could make like the HP Lovecraft Historical Society, mess around with christmas songs. Or Fiddler on the Roof.
But if we change the words to a musical, I'd suggest we do a differant one. Like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

I think a cover is a more feasible plan, but...

If you want original melodies, please PM me with a key, theme, time signature and all that, I will get to work straight away.

(example:
verse-
3/4 time
Key: G minor
dark and brooding)

I do not record. I will post my work here for someone else to do.

I can competently compose for guitar and bass.

Thanks,
Egiam

Please. Pleasepleasepleaseplease!!

A few months ago, after comic 635 (I See A Red Robe and I Want it Painted Black), somebody posted lyrics relating to the comic to the tune of Paint it Black here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106380) We never could find anyone to make it, and so long as you're doing this anyway . . .

Also, I suck horribly at singing, so while I will watch and listen with great interest, I will not be participating. So good luck whatever you decide to do!

That's a good idea.
I'll get together all the ideas for covers (and I think we are decided on a cover, at least for the first one), and then we can vote. If you have any burning need for a particular cover, suggest it before Tuesday.

Well, erm... I am working on a little something. My mic isn't so good, but here's an idea, because it's easy enough that we can pull it off. So: here (http://www.mediafire.com/?gmwmjr2nckr). Again, sorry for the bad mic...

I'm with Boo for avoiding meme's here, but since this is a collaboration doing a cover or a re-make of a song would be good.

I'm think "We are the world" with similar music but different lyrics...like

Chorus
We Are The Playground
We Are The Forums
We are the ones who post the day away in this decorum,
There are people found here, from all around the world
It's true, the giant i-t-p, is you and me

I'll can parody other lyrics later, but that's my suggestion. Matching key/tempo/parameter is going to be up to the mix-master who collects all the tracks. :smallamused:

When I was fiddling around with my guitar, I composed a little Riff.

Elans's Theme

Guitar:

Straight eighths, clean, invidual note picking, 4/4 time.

/D-F-A-G-G#-G-E- lo C#:/ Repeat these eight notes over and over and over.... gradually speeding up.

I am going to use you in the future.
For anything I think could use a tune.
But don't worry; if anything profitable comes of it, you will be credited, possibly be presented with a contract, and then made famous as half of a music writing genius, a la Gilbert and Sullivan.
