View Full Version : Name-a-superhero

Not sure this goes here, but anyway. I have a superhero team that needs a name, as everything that pops into my head is just too, too corny (Super Squad? No, brain. Just no.). The heroes themselves already have names, although I'd welcome opinions and suggestions for them as well. They are:

Hotwire, the team founder and source of funds. She's a not-quite-super-intelligent technopath and inventor, who has almost no experience in crimefighting but learns very, very quickly.

Blackjack, the field leader due to being the only member with a decent amount of heroing experience. He has luck powers and an alien blaster pistol and energy sword.

Prodigy, a thirteen year old who was twenty-one both physically and mentally by the time she was seven and hasn't aged a day since. Her blood is blue and she eats only things that taste of mint; her biology is deeply messed up. Her powers are superhuman speed, rapid healing and peak human physical abilities, along with a few other bits of randomness.

Groove, a stoner and motorcycle store sales assistant who happens to be a very powerful telepath, despite being somewhat lacking in the brains department.

Brand, an engineer with minor defensive powers who worked for Hotwire's company. She was the victim of an industrial 'accident' and her powers rapidly expanded; she's pryokinetic, nigh-invulnerable, can fly and has super-strength and magnetic powers.

Bunch-o'-Weirdos.

They make me think of a mechanics. Let me peruse my thesaurus...
Mechanic, automatic, routine, device, contrivance, instrument, workings, machinery, agency, system, technique.
Group, cluster, clump, bunch, batch, set, class, category, party, company, collection, assemblage, union, combination, league, alliance, coalition, association, confederacy, federation, society, guild
Protect, defend, guard, safeguard, secure, screen, cover, shield, defense, aegis, guardian, protector, defender, keeper, custodian, warden, warder
Grotesque, bizarre, strange, weird, odd, fantastic, whimsical, freakish, outlandish
Repair, mend, fix, patch up, restore, rectify, put right, redress, restoration, renovation, overhaul

Hmmm.
Get rid of the cliched ones...

and the boring ones and ones that will make no sense...

Okay, lets see what I can do...
Garagey: The Fixers
Overhaul Confederacy (I don't know, it just came to mind)

Socialisty/factoryey: Warden Combination
People's Custodians
The Cadre
Instrument of the People (bonus: Could contract to "ITP")

I quite like the word "aegis" (a sort of shield of legend). Lets see if we can make an acronym out of it...
A: Ablative, able-bodied, abrasive, absolute, accomplished... Bah, I'm bored. I think "aegis" is worth thinking about, though.

Well, if you have the motivations behind forming a super team, the circumstances, what they crusade against (if anything particular). It'd help with trying to make them unique at the least.

That said, I like The Fixers, even if they aren't supposed to be "garage-y".

Watchmen. Wait, there's already a superhero comic with that name. How about Watchpeople so as not to be sexist? No? Okay. How about the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I'm pretty sure that's not already a thing.

Okay. Serious time. I was saving this for a satire superhero comic I wanted to use, but I'm still working on the characters and I'm not too attached to the name. Just tell me if you're going with in case I decide to use it.

I think "The Fixers" is probably along the right lines for this group. Maybe "The Mechanics", "The Engineers", "The Operators", "The Justice Garage"...ooh, wait, I've got it.

"Team Garage Door!"

Because it uses the "aegis"/protective thing that Serpentine was on about, but in a more familiar way, along with the mechanical/garage-y thing this group has going on. And it sounds like an actual name that a team would come up with in real life, which seems oddly appropriate for this group (it could even have come about the same way the "Order of the Stick" came up with their name).

*well compiled list of names*

Good names... but they all sound like supervillain groups! I mean really, the Overhaul Confederacy sounds like a Wild West version of the Borg, and the Fixers sounds like what Jules and Vincent would be if they were supervillains.

That said, I like Aegis. You can't really go wrong with classical references, as illustrated by the X-Men. If they are mechanically themed, try looking at Hephaestus/Vulcan for inspiration. How about "The Cabeiri"?

I would say the Repairmen but, well, they're mainly women.

Hm. The Mechanists?

Though if you made it the Overhaul Union...

Okay first Brand, is like, DCU powerful compared to the others.

That aside, you forgot to say a few things.

What is their purpose? What are they trying to say or stand up for?

Look at existing groups and see.

The Avengers, simple enough. They stand against evil and fight back against it. A reactive group.

The Justice League. Self-explanatory. Justice. An abstract concept. Not vengeance, not defense, but justice. See also, JSA.

The Fantastic Four. Forget the number element, but look at the first word, "Fantastic". Wondrous, crazy sci-fi-style adventure. Exploration, expanding human knowledge, they and "The Challengers of the Unknown" have that all locked up.

The Doom Patrol. Kinda dark and depressing, right? Freakish weirdos out to save the world from even more bizarre menaces.

The Teen Titans. Youth, vigour, an air of unstoppability so often found in the young.

The Authority. They take over the world for its own damn good. They are the final word against things harmful to humanity. That name is vaguely threatening, purposefully so.

Planetary. Worldwide exploration, plumbing the depths of the secrets kept by everybody.

So, what is this group about?
