Medium Armor Proficiency.

Of course, this doesn't get you around the spell failure chance.

For the Spell failure, there's a feat in Complete Arcane that allows you to negate it for medium armor.

I do believe there's a feat called something like "Armoured Mage" which ups the armour category for which you can ignore ASF, assuming you have a feature to ignore ASF from some armour already. It's most likely in either Complete Arcane or PHB II. (However, this won't get you proficiency with the armour.)

I'm confused...

Armor Proficiency (Medium) [General]
[...]
Fighters, barbarians, paladins, clerics, druids, and bards automatically have Armor Proficiency (medium) as a bonus feat. They need not select it.

Yet the section on Bards says they're only proficient with light armor.

Mithral Breastplate. Done.

Battle Caster. Lets you wear armor one size up(medium for bards) without worrying about ASF.

Strictly speaking though, Mithral Breastplate is a better choice than picking up the Battle Caster feat. Though with Battle Caster you could wear Mithral Full Plate(medium armor!) with no penalties aside from Max Dex and ACP.

BTW, the feat is called "Armored Battlecaster", and it's from Complete Arcane.

3.0 copy paste. They used to be proficient in it.

Huh. Then why didn't 3.0 Elan have any armor?

*checks the 3.0 SRD*

Oh, I get it - they didn't have the pass on Spell Failure under 3.0 rules.

the crossover errors in somew SRD's are terrible.
Eg DnD wiki says on the medium armour that bards are proficent with it.
But one the bards page it says they arn't.

Specific Set, yeah.

So mp players party are privateers, and the've been training the crew in combat.
And i've finally granted the head of the crew, sort of a first mate fellow. class levels.
And Bard was vey appropriate, yiuknow sea shanties and stories.
HE's Hadozee, so the wandering and sense of adventure....

THey had already been giving this guy the pick of the loot.
Eg a +1 knockback cutlass.
'cos by giving to him it increased the moral of the whole crew, knowing they could be promoted.
And they wanted top give him a set of living coral amour, (16,000 gp, but shocking reasil value only 8,000)
