Can anyone come up with a semi-playable character that takes a different class at each level?

(doesn't have to be a 20 level build if you don't want to, but at least 12-ish)

Just a thought experiment.

Using UA Fractional BAB. For saves, using the "sane version" (i.e. total the number of levels in classes with a good save, divide by two; total the number of levels in classes with a poor save, divide by three; and add two if there was at least one with a good save.)

Human Sorcerer 1/Assassin 1/Wujen 1/ Warmage 1/Mage of the Arcane Order 9/Wizard 1/Sublime Chord 1/ Suel Arcanamach 1/Emancipated Spawn 2/Bard 1

Not quite what you are looking for, but that's the final class build of "The Word", which basically kills... everything. Instantly. Yay for Holy Word/Dictum/Blasphemy/that other one!

One option is wizard 1/sorcerer 1/bard 1/beguiler 1/dread necromancer 1/warmage 1/sublime chord 1, taking all sublime chord after that; take Practiced Spellcaster and every single one of those classes has CL 6, so play a blaster and go to town. Just make sure you have a real arcanist in the party to cover utility and buffs.

Elf-

Lion Totem Barbarian 1/ Paladin of Freedom 1/ Fighter 1/ Duskblade 1/ CW Samaurai 1/ CW Ronin 1/ Ranger 1/ Illithid Slayer 1/ Swashbuckler 1/ Crusader 1/ Warblade 1/ Bloodstorm Blade 1/ Eternal Blade 1/ Bear Warrior 1/ Exotic Weapon Master 1

Full BAB, Pounce and some other useful things so far. There should be five more easily qualified for full BAB classes to pick up.

Several things leap to mind:

1) If you can somehow manage to string together 19 PrCs that advance caster level at their first level, you're good. Getting 2nd level spells is probably going to be the most annoying part. You can cheat your way in with Versatile Spellcaster + Beguiler, Dread Necro, or Heighten Spell, unless you prefer Aasimar Wizard + Paragnostic Apostate + Master Specialist or something.

2) On the subject of 2nd level spells, Master Spellthief! Take 1 level of Spellthief, finagle your way to 2nd level spells, and then you can add up all of your caster levels for all of your arcane casting. Add in Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard, Wu Jen, Beguiler, Dread Necromancer, Warmage, Assassin, Suel Arcanamach, and you've got an endless supply of 1st level spells that you can cast at your character level. That's gotta be worth something.

3) Speaking of Spellthief, Rogues have a pretty huge advantage here. Unlike caster levels, skill points don't care where they come from, and most PrCs advance Sneak Attack faster than casting. Go human with Able Learner, and take everything with 6x skill points/level, if you're lazy.

If you were an elf and you take a single level in 6 of those classes... Then if you abandon the idea and take 2 more levels in one of your classes instead you'd trigger Multiclass XP penalties x5.

And that'd be hilarious.

Yeah I'm an Elven Ranger(3)/Fighter/Paladin/Monk/Rogue/Druid and I'm unable to gain experience. (Unless I do some evil deeds and lose paladin status but trading behaviour for power is not what being a paladin is all about!)

Hmm. To work out something a vague outline...

Alignment, Lawful Neutral. I don't recall if Scout has an alignment restriction, so that might not work - alignment was selected to facilitate Incarnate and Monk.

Psionic Warrior might also be a good early class choice for the MSNR levels.

Honestly, levels 2-8 are pretty flexible. If you can find a good early PRC or two that give something nifty, feel free to cut one or two out of the MSNR selection - I recommend going Ranger-Scout-Monk-Ninja in that order.

You can wait until character level 13 to grab Swordsage if you want to be ML 7.

For Ranger, grab a favored enemy immune to precision damage so you can take a feat that lets you bypass that immunity.
Take Scout since it works well with your Rogue class features and gives good skill points.
Take Monk for a scattering of random abilities that synergize with Scout and Totemist abilities.
Take Ninja 'cause you already have a bunch of precision damage and you might as well.

Rogue 1: for skill points
Fighter 1: for a bonus feat
Totemist 1: for Soulbinds
Incarnate 1: for Soulbinds
Monk, Scout, Ninja, or Ranger 1
Monk, Scout, Ninja, or Ranger 1
Monk, Scout, Ninja, or Ranger 1
Monk, Scout, Ninja, or Ranger 1
Warblade 1: Because now we're ML 5
<PRC level>
Swordsage 1 (unarmed if you took Monk): We're ML 6
<PRC levels 'til the cows come home>

Basically, the idea is to be a decent combatant with a bucket of minor tricks to suppliment you, and a decent skillmonkey between good skill point classes and Incarnate soulbinds. Grab Duelist for more Int synergy, especially if you went Monk/Unarmed Swordsage, and try to avoid 1/2 BAB classes unless they give you a lot of tricks (like Incarnate).

Eh, you need 3rd level arcane spells for Sublime Chord. The best I can do is something like:

{table]1) Beguiler |Able Learner, Versatile Spellcaster
2) Wizard | Scribe Scroll
3) Spellthief | Master Spellthief
4) Dread Necromancer
5) Bard
6) Mindbender | Skill Focus: (Knowledge: Religion)
7) Divine Oracle
8) Ruathar
9) Duskblade | (Metamagic)
10) Assassin
11) Sublime Chord
12) Arcane Trickster | (Metamagic)
13) Loremaster
14) Paragnostic Apostate
... And then you're on your own for 6 more PrCs.

Beguiler can fake having higher level spells with Versatile Spellcaster (As can Dread Necro) which qualifies us for Master Spellthief at level 3. MS makes all of our various caster levels stack together, which gets us into Mindbender. Mindbender, Divine Oracle and Ruathar (blah) add to Beguiler casting which gets us our '3rd' level spells. Duskblade is naked filler, Assassin helps us qualify for Arcane Trickster later, adding to Sublime Chord casting. Loremaster lets us double dip on a worthless prereq feat, and we need huge Knowledge (Arcana) anyway.

Skill points make my head hurt, but I think it's doable with Able Learner and 18 Int- you're an Int based caster anyway, until level 11 where you suddenly switch to cha. Oops.

Yeah, I was assuming some early-entry shenanigans there. Your build I actually like better--I never think of spellthief because, well, it generally sucks, but I'll have to remember Master Spellthief for next time.

playing around with a scout1/barb1/rogue2/ranger1/ninja1/fighter1/cleric1/psychic warrior 4/assasin 3/duelist3.
Lots of extra dice when spring attacking from cover , spells to get sa vs undead, etc silly skill points, pretty high unarmoured ac, evasion, uncanny dodge, domain powers(luck, travel).

scout1/barb1/rogue2/ranger1/ninja1/fighter1/cleric1/psychic warrior 4/assasin 3/duelist3

That's not going to work. Even for a Human with -Favoured class=highest- there's still 6 classes that are 2 levels away from the assassin/duelist. So with XP penalties in effect there's no way to advance to get this character.

This is a thought experiment, not an actual character. XP penalties should be ignored.

How about Martial Raging monk2/Wolf Totem City Brawler Barbarian 2/ Fighter 2/ Fist of the forest 3/Psychic Warrior 2/ War blade 1/Sword Sage 1/ Blood Claw master 2/ Master of Nine 2/ X or Y 3

X= More Sword sage/Warblade/Blood claw master/ Master of nine

Y= More psychic warrior

BaB=~15 for the 17 level depending on what you take it can go to 17-18

Human, two flaws
Duskblade 1
Barbarian, pounce from lion spirit
Fighter 1
Warblade 1
Crusader 1
Bloodline levels 3- Not a class, screws you badly. In the spirit of this endeavor.
Swordsage 1
Dervish 1 needs:Bab +5 Combat expertise, dodge, mobility, weapon focus(any slashing: scimitars, stupid)
Bloodclaw Master 1 needs: TWF
Master of the Nine 1 needs: Adaptive style, improved init, dodge,

Feats:

We have a BUNCH of dead feats all through here. It's painful.

1 Improved Initiative
H Dodge
F Mobility
F Combat expertise

3 TWF
3.Fi Blind Fight
6 Adaptive style

9 Improved unarmed strike
9, weapon focus with a discipline weapon

12 Knowledge Devotion

We're abusing the wording of bloodlines to grant us stupid-stupid-stupid initiator level calculations. I'll plot out the feats in a moment, but this build should have three or four 9th level maneuvers. It becomes a nice build if you relax the strictures even just a little, and potentially a really fun one if you go ahead and optimize it.

Not sure I can hit the skill requirements. Don't wanna think about it. Build becomes ridiculously over-powered if you use pathfinder.

assasin and duelist are prestige classes, which are not counted for xp penalties iirc?
To be honest i think some more prestige classes might help up the sneak attack anyway?
Will do a full build later, but no tob as i dont own that one

Hmmm.

{table]Rogue | Dodge, Mobility
Psionic Rogue (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040723b)
Lurk | Practiced Manifester: Lurk
Thug Variant Fighter (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#fighter)
Spellthief
Ninja | Martial Study: Cloak of Deception
Assassin
Psionic Assassin (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040723d)
Avenger (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070401a) | Martial Stance: Assassin's Stance
Avenging Executioner
Master of Masks (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070105a&page=3)
Dread Commando (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20050407b&page=6)
And that's Sneak Attack +16d6 at level 12. Who's got 8 more Rogue PrCs? Ideally ones that aren't April Fool's Day jokes?

EDIT: @v Who's that talking to? Because Dread Commando is the only one of these with any feat requirements at all.

Doc Roc

Sorry Fishy, I'm an idiot sometimes. I don't reach for reference like a good boy should.

I was thinking of the Swashbuckler class.

I'm thinking Lion Totem Barbarian 1/Fighter 1 (or 2)/Crusader 1/Warblade 1 is actually a very solid low level build.

Easy. I think I'd like a Ranger 10 / Barbarian 10.

Ranger, then Barbarian, then Ranger, then Barbarian, etc.

Different class at every level!
