View Full Version : [3.5] Good ways to make a melee character fly

I know that Flying enemies are the bane of melee characters, so I'd like to make sure I have a way to reliably fly without help from anybody else. So, what are some good items to pick up? Note, at will isn't necessary so a few times per day will work. Also, the character is level 13 and so has quite a bit of money to work with.

Boots of flying, cape of flying, wings of flying, potion of fly, friendly caster, UMD, half-celestial template, etc. It's almost as if the game designers intended for non-casters to have access to a reasonable amount of magic.

You could play a Raptoran or Dragonborn raptoran or an anthropomorphic bat, but since it sounds like you want suggestions for a pre-existing character, not one you're building? Ask the party wizard to memorize Fly at leat once per day, or get Winged Boots (Not sure how much they cost, but they're in the DMG) for temporary flight, or Wings of Flying (Expensive at 55,000 gp, but good) for permanent flight.

Thre are probably a lot more options than that, but my suggestions for relatively cheap flight would be Winged Boots or just a buff from the party casters.

Perhaps I needed to be more clear. Yes, I know that I can just get the Wizard to cast Fly or be a Dragonborn or whatever, but I'd like to accomplish it with items. And yes ericgrau, I know there are lots. I'm looking for sources, prices, etc.

Be a halfling with an orc cohort.

I think your cohort needs powerful build or large size.

If the above mentioned items won't cut the mustard, I suggest custom magic items. Overland flight isn't as fast or maneuverable as fly, but it lasts for an hour per level. Get a custom item of Overland flight, that casts the spell twice a day. That's 7 hours per use of the item.
Easily affordable at your level.

Other alternative: Custom wondrous item that casts Phantom Steed.
It would look awesome if the entire party had those, but they'd be incredibly expensive, since it needs a 12th level caster just to get airwalk at will. And 14th for fly (average maneuverability).
So 14 (level) * 3 (spell) * 2000? (for wondrous item) = 84000 gold for a single item. Half that if you have a friendly caster in your party.

edit: What would it cost to make an animated object with flight, or a construct with flight? Either (su) flight, or with wings? Finally, undead pegasus with permanent shrink item. When you don't need it, you just activate the shrink item, and now you've got a pocket sized pegasus, or one made of cloth. Downside is fighting evil clerics and liches. They can control or rebuke your mount...

Well, other then items you can attempt for getting a template, but it will cost you levels-and probably a scroll of wish or something.

If you manage to get the "Winged" template (savage species), you get +4 dex, +2 wis, and a fly speed equal to your land speed +20 ft, with maneuverability by your dex. 17 dex or move=PERFECT maneuverability! (13 prior to the bonus 4 from the template)

There are plenty of great magical and psionic items to help a character fly and most of them aren't expensive by the time your characters hit 6th level or so.

Somehow I'm getting the feeling that you're looking for non-magical items to help a melee character fly. That might be more of a problem, unless you're looking strictly at gliding. Hang Gliders, Parafoils, and Wingsuits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttz5oPpF1Js) could all theoretically be crafted in a D&D game, but the trick is getting up there in the first place. Potions of Levitate, Trebuchets, friendly storm giants and cliff faces come to mind.

It depends a bit if you are a charger ... if you are you want a fly speed, if not you might want a mount so you can get off full attacks more often.

The Bronze Griffon figurine of wondrous power is quite nice.

PS. get a ring of feather fall too.

The Wings of Flying are probably the best, having no limit on their use. With the MIC option to simply combine items/costs you could apply another cape-type with the wings and create Wings of Charisma +X or whatever.

The 54,000g cost is a up there but you get what you pay for.

A wand of fly will run you 11,250g and with 50 charges will probably take care of most of your short-term flying needs for the majority of your adventuring career, assuming you can activate it.

If you dont mind being evil go for the feathered wing graft from fiend folio. Costs 10k gold, permanent, non-magical, double base speed flight, always on, good manuverablity. As long as you don't mind being evil (and having a demons wings stitched onto you) then it is basically the perfect way to get flight.

The nice thing about the Wings is that they work all day long, no use limit.

However, there's a similar item in Magic Item Compendium that is slightly better IMHO. Phoenix cloak. Slightly cheaper (50k), it gives you perfect maneuverability but isn't as fast as the Wings of Flying. It also gives you other minor benefits if you combine it with other phoenix-themed items.

No, gnomes get punted, not flung. Invest in padded armor with heavier padding over the backside. Think 'bustle'.

Depends on politeness. And if the PCs understand why everyone hates gnomes.

Toss Ally (or something to that effect) is a feat from I believe Complete Warior, and this is the pic that accompanies it. I agree, I laughed my a-- off when I saw it. 6 levels of Warlock or Dragonfire Adept gives at-will Flight.

Fixed for you.

And the other toys you get along the way are cooler for Dragonfire Adept, IMHO.

There are certain things GP can't buy. For everything else, there's Adventuring (tm)

Jokes aside, if you're a Swordsage or have levels in Shadow Sun Ninja, you can get Balance in the Sky as a stance, and that technically allows you to "fly", or rather walk through the air.

If you somehow have the monstrous ability to achieve 120 in Balance, you can do it as a skill check, but only to move (not to stay aloft). With a chance of reaching 125, you can do it as a move action, and quite probably as part of a charge. Of course, you may couple that with epic Tumble to receive no damage from the fall, and any kind of full-attack-while-charging or similar tactic to actually do something.
