Any recommendations about must-have things to investigate while there or to either bring with me or acquire quickly in order to survive?

Where in Oregon? It's a pretty good sized state. And for how long?

Coidzor

Eugene, until January.

And while I'm not opposed to it, I doubt there's anyone on here who'd want to meet up while I'm out there.

Did you post a thread about this before? I recommend taking trips out to Sweet Creek Falls and Salt Creek Falls if you get a chance. Each is about an hour's drive away.

Be sure to have plenty of oxen, don't push too hard, hunt conservatively, and rest whenever a party member falls ill.

That was me considering it and I think it got purged.

I'll double check that though. I did a cursory scan and didn't see it.

I'm leaving in about a week or so.

Hmm? What is this?

Pure deliciousness. (http://www.stashtea.com/)

This store is how I finally got the husband to like tea - while I was shopping, they let him just try and try and try dozens of different kinds until he'd figured out what he liked!

Here are the few things you need to know about oregon.

1. You can legally be in public nude
2. You can legally go into a public restroom of the opposite sex.
3. We really need a good fast food chain like In n Out or White Castle.

^: Wait, what? Public Nudity legal?

..Hmm, so there's no real food options after 11 PM?

Coolies. I'm already fond of tea myself, but if I head up that way, I'll definitely investigate it.

Yes Public Nudity Legal. I'll dig up a link to prove it tomorrow.(if I don't forget)

Well there is food. We have Most of the major Fast Food places.

Any especially good more local chains or west-coast only things? Because, yeah... regions.

For instance, white castle can only really be found in the midwest, Krystal in like, the southeast, that sort of thing.

The Honeywood Winery (http://honeywoodwinery.com/) isn't too far from Eugene. Try the Blackberry Mead (http://honeywoodwinery.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=101).

I'll be turning twenty one in november, so I'll have to make that trip...

And I believe my friend who I'm staying with is planning on dragging me to something involving salt creek...

One that I can think of. Burgerville. They have some decent shakes.

If you come up near Salem you are so sneaking me away and buying me whiskey and porn being a encouraging person.

So. I'm here now. And no one ever mentioned the most ridiculous law against self-servicing your car at the gas station.

That wouldn't have been any fun. The lack of sales tax threw me even more. "This $20 item is $20? ...Huh?"

I think Deary mentioned that before so it wasn't too shocking.

Everything's ****-all more expensive though, then again, the minimum wage is three dollars more than the state I left, so there you go.

Here's a mandatory "go to Portland and pretend you're Paris Hilton, are feeling depressed and are out of chocolate" tip. No sales tax and tons of cool outlet stores will make it worth your while  Only one thing is too bad - there aren't any nice stores like Armani Exchange or Holt Renfrew (or whatever the American version of Holt is... think large department stores that sells tons of cool high-fashion stuff, sometimes even at decent prices).

Now, if you're a fan of nature, trust me, visit Silver Falls. IMO the coolest waterfall this side of Niagara. There's also Mount Hood if you're into skiing/snowboarding, however the only time I was there I was 11 and only had a vague idea of how to ski so all my memories involve me sitting on my ass. Which means I can't really compare it to any other mountains (although from what I do remember, I like it better than Grouse or Seymour in North Van but worse than Blackcomb in Whistler).

And Newport Aquarium.

Now, there's probably wineries, but I don't really know anything about them. Haven't lived there since I was 12.

Oh, and you can also burn witches in Salem. In case someone calls you on "wrong Salem, moron," claim that it's all her fault - you were in Massachusetts just two minutes ago.

My fiancee is from Oregon (Salem area), so I'm vaguely familiar with it. If you get a chance, go to Powell's Books in Portland. The biggest, most impressive bookstore I've ever seen.

There's also a place called Multnoma (sp) Falls that's pretty impressive.

Also, if you're bored Jan 2nd or so, and are in the Salem Area, feel free to come to my wedding.

Close. Multnomah Falls. But it's kind of pronounced "Mull-ten-nome-uh". I <3 my state's weirdness.

this statement is confusing on so many levels

oregon is known world over as a mecca for good/alternative cooking - why stick to fast foods

Sometimes you want food and you want to go places after 10 PM. Mainly that.

What's really surprised me is not the endemic and prolific racism because they're not used to actually ever having to deal with living with or amongst non-whites, but the fact that they have to create artificial racism by discriminating against and hating people based upon their astrological sign.

I'm kinda throwing up in my mouth right now just thinking about it.

I'm confused. What are you talking about?

PS: Oregon has really good Chinese food but all the Mexican food I had there is just overpriced Taco Bell with wait staff. Although I may have just been unlucky.

Oh, they're really horribly racist and they're bad at it because they don't know how to really act or how to talk about it because there's never any, for instance, african americans around.

And my friend and I have been getting a lot of **** for our astrological signs from people who were perfectly friendly and cordial up until they found out when we had birthdays.

This past week especially I received a lot of verbal abuse for having a november birthday.

If you're into outdoors stuff go check out Multnomah Fall. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multnomah_Falls) Great hikes. Beautiful waterfalls.

If you like pancakes, check out the Original house of pancakes. Expect a line on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

WarBrute

The "original" Original House of Pancakes is in Portland(It was bulit in the 1950s) but they also have one in Eugene.

Ok for your convenience here are the Locations (http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/phloc_or.html) in Oregon

I suggest the Dutch baby, or if you have a BIG appetite try the apple pancake.

Ya maybe I should of mentioned something like that. I didn't even think about it because there are all of 4 black family's in my entire town(population is like 20,000 too).

For a second there I thought you were implying that In N Out isn't good, but surely that's not possible.

Dude WTF? That is the most blatantly rude, insulting, and inaccurate blanket description of people in Oregon, my home state, that I have ever come across. Not to mention its borderline "racist" in and of itself. Talk about spreading incredibly negative and incorrect stereotypes around..

A) What, white people are now automatically racist if they dont live alongside other races?? :smallconfused::smallyuk:

B) While predominantly white, there are lots of other races living in Oregon. I had plenty of black friends, asian friends, latino friends, and native friends, to name some of the bigger groups. Sure its nothing like living in New York, but to say there is only whites is a blatant lie.

C) As far as astrological hating... what??? I cant believe for a second that anybody ever "hated" you because of your sign, even the word hate is so incredibly antithetical to the kind of people who are heavy into astrology. I mean, generally speaking, its tree hugging peace loving hippies, true and blue. So your generalization just doesnt match up, in any way shape or form. Tho maybe they got a whiff of a bad aura or something, might have been something you said..

OP: Definitely go to Silver Falls state park. Its not one waterfall. Its like, 17 or so... and its incredibly beautiful, old growth forest in a gorge, huge waterfalls, giant canyon... amazing.

Then head out to the coast, its one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, honest to God. Take a long walk out on the sanddunes.. and I mean, we are talking 300 foot high sand dunes in places, its a whole nother world.

Eugene is great, tho it can be a bit wet and depressing in the winter, how long are you staying for? Another close daytrip is Fall Creek... especially in the summer its wonderful for swimming and hiking.

Ooh, and climb South Sister if you get the chance. Its a day hike to the snowfilled top of an "extinct" volcano. On a good day, you can see the ocean. Panoramic view of the Cascade Mountains.
