View Full Version : How did you choose your screen name?

Just as the title says.

And I'll answer my own question like this:

I once had an avariel(sp?) elf rogue named Shadow Moonwhisper. I think I was trying to create a new character for some online multiplayer game, and I couldn't fit Shadow Moonwhisper. So I shortened it to Shadowwhisper, and then I thought, "That doesn't look right," and took out one of the "w"'s and I have used it from then on.

Wolfscarab
2009-10-14, 07:51 PM
I picked 2 of my favorite kinds of animals and stuck them togeather... years ago that is, and it just stuck, and its easy for me to remember, Wolfscarab.... and its just Wolf instead of a specific type of wolf becuase I liked all kinds of wolfs....

The one problem with my name is that ever since I started commonly useing it... I haven't been able to get the idea out of my head of what exactly a Wolf Scarab would look like xD

Jacklu didn't pick name. Name picked Jacklu. It was spawned from an IM session gone awry and the subsequent adoption of it as mah real name amongst my RL friends. When I signed up for an account, it only seemed logical. In fact, Jacklu is what I go by IRL for the most part.

All my forum names are from Russian books. I'm signed up to a lot of stuff, so it's mainly so I can remember & associate everything I need to while keeping each identity as distinct. I don't like the idea of going by the same name everywhere, but I don't mind having different names from the same source.

The Ibis-Headed Egyptian God of the moon, wisdom, magic, the measurement and regulation of events and of time, inventor of writing, record-keeper, and arbitrator between the gods is Thoth. Trai
2009-10-14, 08:13 PM
My actual name is Tracy; a teacher of mine started calling me Trai about six years back. I liked it and gradually picked it up (I went through a phase where I spelled my name "Traci" for a while), and now pretty much all my friends (and their parents) call me Trai rather than Tracy.

When I was younger, I used to use it around the interwebs for androgyny purposes. Now, though, it's just become the way I identify myself, and I haven't seen anyone else use it as a nickname, so it's just who I am

Oh, and since I've had people ask before, it's pronounced like the word tray. Some people assume it's pronounced try because of the "ai", but nope!

I'd been using my name as a pseudonym on the Internet for a year or so already when I signed up. It's a deliciously ironic anagram of "Hello Kitty".

Also, it's unique. I've only encountered two sites where someone was using it already, and those sites were YouTube and Myspace.

As for mine? Simple. I really like dragons. I really loathe zombies. Therefore, zombie dragons (or as I know them, death dragons) combine both, which end up complementing each other perfectly! For me, anyway.

With a name like Silverraptor? Um, yeah I want to hear it!

Alright then.

It all started back in elementary school for me. I would always hear from the other kids that gold was better then silver. I always questioned why that was because silver is almost as valuable as gold but the other kids just blew me off. I then decided I liked silver better then gold because it was being treated unfairly. (I was only 7 at the time.)

Later, when I was 12, I volunteered with my dad to clear some burned rubble from a fire in the mountains. We were there with a church group and it took all day. We got to camp inside a nice cabin for the night. Since I was the youngest of volunteers, (Most of the others were 16 and up and wanted to take about sex and stuff) I wandered around the cabin.

I found a television with a VCR and looked throught the tapes. One of the tapes was Jurrasic Park, and I put it in. Suffice to say, I was scarred silly, but the raptor's freaked me out the most because of how intellegent they were. For a couple years, I've been freaked out by them because of that trait, but over time I began to like them.

Then my family finally got me to make an e-mail when I was 15. They wanted me to pick a username and so I thought, "What do I like the most?" Suffice to say, silver and raptor came to mind. So ever since then, all my usernames have been Silver Raptor.

Yup, my life right there.

Raz_Fox
2009-10-14, 09:56 PM
When I decided to join these amazing forums, I realized that I had no clever names in m' head. Well, I thought about what immediately came to mind when I thought of gaming and D&D in particular.

Raz the Rogue-Mage came immediately to mind. If you don't know who he is, shame on you! Go do a bit of web-trawlin'. Anyway, I liked Raz, but it wouldn't let me take the name. I found out later that his creator already took the name here.

Anyway. I thought some more, trying to find something that really fit me. Now, I love foxes. Absolutely love them. Blame Colophonius Regenschein from The City of Dreaming Books for starting my obsession, if you must. I knew that it would complete my name here.

Thus, Raz_Fox was born.

Tavar
2009-10-14, 10:01 PM
My name comes from the Coded Alera series by Jim Butcher. You first hear it when the Canim(~9 ft tall wolfmen) call the main character it, telling him it mean demon. Later on, you actual see one in the books. They're a relatively small cat like creature(I'm away from my books at the moment, but I believe mountain lion size) that can easily kill Canim. Seriously, they're badass.

Once you figure out what language my username is in, why I chose it becomes fairly obvious.

Djinn_in_Tonic
2009-10-14, 10:29 PM
At my highschool after-ball party during my junior year, they were (for some unknown reason) offering what amounted to custom engraved glass beer glasses. I was at a loss for what to put on mine, and figured that, since it was so obviously a container meant for alcohol, I might as well play along.

It couldn't be obvious though, as otherwise they wouldn't actually allow it at a school function, so I thought around and realized that Djinn and Gin...well...sound exactly alike. Therefore, I engraved the glass with the motto Djinn in Tonic: Magically Delicious. And the more I looked at it, the more I loved it.

No one forgets it either, so that helped.

KataraAltinaII
2009-10-14, 11:10 PM
my name came from an Avatar: the Last Airbender OC (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Melundell/pwnage/kaltina.png) I created around October of 2008.

of course, that character came from a concept that I had in a novel.

I'm more often than not known as Tera253, and that comes from a character from my novel, an my favorite number.

arguskos
2009-10-14, 11:14 PM
Mine is a perversion of this (http://magiccards.info/rav/en/190.html) Magic card. I always pronounced it as Argus instead of Agrus, and eventually, the name stuck.

Honestly, I've been giving some serious consideration to changing it to another nick of mine, bloodydoves (a long and old in-joke between some old friends and me, I forget how I got it now).

wxdruid
2009-10-14, 11:19 PM
When I signed up for this forum I had to think of an interesting, yet unused user name. Well, I'm a weather forecaster (wx) and in D&D I particularly like Druids because they deal with nature and have a lot of weather spells, so I became the wxdruid (weather druid) and well, I love it. I now have it on my license plate as well. My entire nickname is Gwen the wxdruid. When I go to GenCon or meetups, I prefer to be called Gwen and answer to it just as I would my RL name.

Ah, well. v.v

Ooh! Ooh! I remember!

Well, my best friend wanted to write Metal Gear Solid 3 self-insert-style fanfiction, with us as the villains. The villains of that game are the Cobra Unit, hence the Cobra part. They're also all named after emotions, so we brainstormed up some, and I became "The Hatred". Another friend decided to write a story with the same characters set in ancient Japan, so we web-translated the names into Japanese, and I became Ikari.

The cobra avvie is because one of my avvies before anyone made one for me was a tree wearing sunglasses. Rex Idiotarum made a joke about tree cobras in RB, I found a picture of one (small, grey, and with huge black eyes), and he made me my first avvie, a swaying cobra. I liked it so much, I kept the theme. *nods*

And there you go. Lame storytime is over. =P

I still say it's the best story ever. :smalltongue: Better than mine, at least.

Basically, "Introbulus" Is the name that I use everywhere for everything on the internet. I like to do that because if you Google Introbulus, it will bring up basically everywhere I've ever been online.

The name origin is completely silly. While playing a game of Civ III Multiplayer, I would usually enter a random set of letters and turn it into what resembled a name. One of those names was "Introbulus", and I liked the way it looked so much that I decided to make it my main RP character. (He rarely gets used anymore, but holds a very dear place to my heart.) And after that, I simply KEPT using it because nobody, anywhere, ever, uses the name except me.

I originally used this name to register on WoWWiki, in order to add to a discussion about the Warcraft character named Xavius. Hence, Lord Xavius, or just Xavius in some places. I do have other usernames on different places (but not many); I'm TheDalekEmperor on YouTube, for example.

2009-10-15, 05:43 AM
It's my default daydream protagonist name from way back. I think it first came to mind when I was driving between Tallangatta and Kaniva, when we passed a sign to the town Serpentine. It just really grabbed me for some reason. My favourite word.
Also, I like snakes. I was seriously thinking about being a herpetologist for a while.

It took a chainsaw, a fifth of bacardi 151, and a whole bag of cats for me to decide on my username.

Elder Tsofu
2009-10-15, 05:54 AM
Mine comes from my main character in the Guild-wars games.
I wanted to make an elderly elonian monk, so the title Elder suited fine.
Then I randomly bashed the keyboard and got Tsofu - which I liked directly.
Later on people reminded me that the name Tsofu also exists in Robert Jordans the wheel of time series - there as "Stedding Tsofu", one of the forested glades/havens inhabited by the quite gentle giants.
It suited my character as he is kind of a gentle (monk) giant (quite tall).
So it stuck, either as "Elder", "Tsofu" or the combination.

Dogmantra
2009-10-15, 06:08 AM
I was about 10, I liked Dogs, I liked Men and I liked Men that were also dogs. I typed Dogman. 'twas taken. I hit the keyboard randomly and got a tra. It rolled off the tongue, so I used it. I use it everywhere now. I later found out that a mantra is actually a real thing. Don't be reading into it, thinking I'm named after some kind of canine chant.

Katana_Geldar
2009-10-15, 06:16 AM
Katana was an old fan fiction character of mine and Geldar was the name of a paladin I played in Diablo II which made me start loving Pallies.

Too bad my D&D Paladin doesn't have half of his coolness like the auras and shield attacks.

Roc Ness
2009-10-15, 06:31 AM
Two (now three?) years ago I played a sorta wacky freeform rpg (my first) with my friends, sorta like one of those silly message board games, only it spanned the course of about one and a half years.

Anyhow, my character was a wizard farmer who was a sort of "wizard that did it". Not really in the disgusting way, just a sort of "that seems cool, I'll make it" sort of sense. And the very first creature I created was a Roc Ness, because I figured a giant feathered water-snake thing was cool. And the name kinda stuck.

This is similar to me, actually. Though I think in my case it was part of my natural desire to be different to other people. Also, silver's prettier.

My username? Fairly simple. I'd been lurking here a couple of months failing to think of a username I thought fitted me, then I read Dune.

Kobold-Bard
2009-10-15, 08:27 AM

I thought it was pretty good until I found out about Deekin :smallmad:

Heheh. He was my first dragon, too. I made him into armor.

I took my screen name from an ad for a mediocre George Clooney movie (later found out it was a book too). I've not read the story and will not watch the movie, I just picked the name 'cause it sounded cool.

My other handle, Moustache Man, comes from one of my most obvious features and the nickname the Iraqis had for me (Abu Shuareb, something like that, translates to Moustache Man). It's also my callsign whenever I'm on a radio, because I like flaunting regulations like that.

You didn't pick it because it's the name of the arena planet in Mechwarrior? Shame...

AtomicKitKat
2009-10-15, 09:32 AM
Back in 2000 or so, I was Sisihkat(Takhisis in reverse, pronounced Sissy-cat) back in a now-defunct local version of an online game. When I had to remake the character, she became Deadlykat. Then the band Atomic Kitten came out, and I thought "Oooh, that would be a cool superhero(I hereby stake/predate my claim on any superheroes/superhero-related activities utilising the name AtomicKitKat), so I first used AtomicKitty, but it soon evolved into AtomicKitKat, and the name has stuck ever since. AtomicPixidis is just because I always liked the name of the star Pixidis(Pixydis/Pixiedust). The Ixi is in there because there was a species of Neopet named the Ixi, and I thought it was a nice confluence. I have a couple of older online handles, but AKK is the primary one I've been known by almost everywhere.

Linkavitch

Anonomuss
2009-10-15, 03:14 PM
When I was younger I had the misconception that 'Anonymous' was an actual person who had written a large portion of the hand-me-down poems and stories that found their way into my primary school textbooks, and then when I later found out that it wasn't, I became far more enamoured with the idea that there was.

My first screen name was FoehammerEcho419, after the pilot, admittedly female, in Halo. It was shortly after I witnessed her heroic death in the game and it kinda stuck with me. Then my friends started calling me "Foreman", so I decided it was time for a change. A character in a book I was reading, about a fictional online game, was called a variation of Anonymous, and spurred on by my earlier theories, I copied the idea, but not the substance, and so Anonomuss was born.

It did help that it had the flow that sounds like it's both a first name and a surname, so on some websites, my details are filled in as Anon O' Muss.

Emlyn

A couple years ago I was trying to pick out a character name to use in some writing. Staring at the keyboard I randomly picked the letter E to be the first letter. As I was searching through a name website I found Emlyn, which is welsh, and fell in love with the name. It had a nice ring to it. Of course it is now shortened to Em in game.

When I was younger I had the misconception that 'Anonymous' was an actual person who had written a large portion of the hand-me-down poems and stories that found their way into my primary school textbooks, and then when I later found out that it wasn't, I became far more enamoured with the idea that there was.

... I vaguely remember an episode of "You Can't Do That On Television" that had a running gag about this.

Stupid dishes.

Jesse Drake

Jesse Drake is a super hero I created. He's kind of the classic super hero, with the powers of enhanced strength, agility, and endurance, and eventually the ability to breath fire, and he's got a good heart, like a hero should. But that's not the world we live in, so to contrast him, his "side kick" (who severely resents it) is Demon Boy, grandson of the devil (who has a Long John Silver bond with him by the way) and rookie hero, who joined the "game" when he realized that he got attention that way. It's really a lot more than just that, but I don't want to take up too much space.

Because I ended up being last on the page, I might as well post my story here.

Sooooo when I had to decide on my email address, I had just read a book, can't remember the name, and one of the characters in it was "Gwyn ap Nud". I shamelessly stole the name. (Can I mention right now that my finger hurts when I type? No idea why) Anyways, I then started to look up the history behind the name. It turned out that the name was that of the Welsh god of the underworld, who took over from his father, Nud, or Nudd. The name means "Gwyn son of Nud". I wanted something more... original.

So I did some babel-fishing, and some dictionary-ing, and I came up with my current name, "Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll", which means, roughly, Light of the Dark.

my first one. Theburningfield I had because I used to listen to the dragonforce song "storming the burning fields." I either mispelled it or the limit wouldn't allow the S.

my new one is due to my Hinata avatar and because I'm a big fan of Naruto.

This is similar to me, actually. Though I think in my case it was part of my natural desire to be different to other people. Also, silver's prettier.

My username? Fairly simple. I'd been lurking here a couple of months failing to think of a username I thought fitted me, then I read Dune.

I was planning to ask you about that!
Thufir Hawat, isn't it? The Mentat?

Back three or four years ago, I joined the now-defunct Nintendo NSider Forums, and since Super Mario World was my favorite game at the time...

Fun fact: It's actually supposed to be CapedLuigisYoshi (with an "s"), but this forum apparently doesn't allow over fifteen characters initially.

Blue Ghost

Back in sixth grade, when I first got my glasses, I tried to start a cult around the blue flannel square that came with my glasses case. I don't remember the exact details, but I called it "Blue Ghost." The name was solidified when I picked Blue Ghost as my Runescape username because it was the first thing I thought of. Since then, Blue Ghost has always worked for me, though the persona has changed decidedly.

I chose mine based on my religion--Discordianism (http://discordia.wikia.com/wiki/Eris_%28Goddess%29). It's Greek for 'To the prettiest one,' and was the inscription on the Apple of Discord in the myth of the Golden Apple and Prince Paris. Don't tick off Eris. She starts wars when she gets snubbed...

Zeb The Troll
2009-10-16, 01:35 AM
Many many years ago, in galaxy far far away (called Planescape) I created a thief/mage character that I loved to play. I played this character for probably close to 5 years in many, many campaigns while I bounced around in the Army. This character was Zeb. Later on, Zeb became sort of my nom du web. This carried over into my introduction to MMO's and Dark Ages of Camelot where I named all of my characters Zeb(class) and just went by Zeb in chats. Later, I wanted to make Zeb a more "official" nom du web, but, being as short as it is and actually being a real name, it was often already taken. Wanting to try to keep it, but not wanting to just add numbers to the end, I thought about how I could modify it and still keep it something that pertained to me, personally, and not just any schmoe off the street. I was still heavy into DAoC at the time and realized that almost all of my characters were trolls. Idea! Now most places I can get this name, either with or without spaces and it makes it easy for people to identify me when they bump into me elsewhere.

Like Gwen, enough people now know me as Zeb that I answer to it as easily as I do my given name. In fact, I identify so much with the name now that Alarra and I had, for a brief moment, considered naming our son this but decided that Zeb was my name and we'd have to find him his own. :smallcool:

KuReshtin

My name is a curseword from the Chronicles of Cheysuli series of books by Jennifer Roberson. The general use means something like 'B*stard' or some such.

Incidentally, it also kind of translates into the Japanese pronunciation of my Christian (hehe) name. If you squint a bit and tilt your head a bit to the left.

Apparently, there's a games world created online where KuReshtin is also the name of a country or a duchy or something.

My name came from mindlessly watching Jimmy Neutron with little kids. Then I figured, I'm going to name my screename after one of the characters.

Pathetic, I know, right?

Well at the time i picked my screen name i was obsessed with lord of the rings so i named my name after elrond. But now elrond is a completely different person because he is not the wise elven cleric anymore. To me he is the charismatic elfing spellthief
