1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

To answer a previous question, no, I do not crossdress. However, I used to go to a camp that had an annual crossdressing day, and I never participated, because I never had female friends confident enough to lend me clothes.

...it is, however, the reason I have seen a 6' something 300 or so lb guy in a dress made for a girl half that size. The terror. >.<

The way I figure it, even those people with no ability to find a rhythm (Yo.) can just wiggle to that song, and it's bound to sync up with at least one of the beats--and if you don't feel any urge to wiggle, then you are, on some level, dead.

Pretty sure it didn't come with the glow sticks the first time around, though. I believe I was a little sprout watching 4th of July fireworks when the miracle of loops of light first made its appearance one summer, and the song predates me. However, I have no problems with blending the rave fashion ethic with this music.

@da Goof: that filler song was awesome and I applaud it to you. ANd it's not scary that I could sing that a cappella to the correct song.

I left 'early' from my anime soc. tonight because it's my university matriculation tomorrow and I've to be up at eight in the morning for photographs. Bleh.
But anime soc. was great! We watched one episode from five different anime and thy were all good and really funny. In order they were:
Eden of the East
Honey and Clover
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Seto no Hayame
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
A perfect order too.
And there was a free raffle to win goodies!
Such as the first Ghost in the Shell movie and its sequel! Hellsing Ultimate! Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds! a plushie Boota! A TTGL folder! Manga! Pins! Free T-shirt transfers! One free T-Shirt designed as one wanted it!
Sadly I only got a pin. It's a Mello pin though which is good. Ish.
Everyone apart from the first winner wanted Ghost in the Shell movies though. The second winner got them.
Then we went for ice cream and all was good.

I seem to have eveloped a penchant for walking alone in the dark through a strange city when I don't completely know the way home though.
It's not a big problem though.

I left 'early' from my anime soc. tonight because it's my university matriculation tomorrow and I've to be up at eight in the morning for photographs. Bleh.
But anime soc. was great! We watched one episode from five different anime and thy were all good and really funny. In order they were:
Eden of the East
Honey and Clover
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Seto no Hayame
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
A perfect order too.
And there was a free raffle to win goodies!
Such as the first Ghost in the Shell movie and its sequel! Hellsing Ultimate! Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds! a plushie Boota! A TTGL folder! Manga! Pins! Free T-shirt transfers! One free T-Shirt designed as one wanted it!
Sadly I only got a pin. It's a Mello pin though which is good. Ish.
Everyone apart from the first winner wanted Ghost in the Shell movies though. The second winner got them.
Then we went for ice cream and all was good.

I enjoy anime. In fact, there is going to be a convention at my university that plans to show some anime, provided that the organization can obtain copyrights. Possibilities are Tegen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumyia, and Lucky Star.

So I had a girl try punching me several times in order to flirt with me the other day. That was weird. And then the people I ate lunch with today were all like, 'ask her out because she likes you' and I was like "wtf?" And they were like "C'mon!" and I was a bit put off. Then they kept wheedling me until finally I did and she sort of spaced out and started watching christian rock music videos on youtube in the middle of turning me down.

So I asked them what they were getting at with that, because it really could have been funnier if they were trying to pull a joke on either of us. I mean, I wasn't even mangled or emotionally inconvenienced.

Granted, it was only for a couple of hours, because unfortunately he had to go back to school early because of a group project, but it was so much fun. All we really did was sit around and talk, but still, we talked non-stop. My throat was dry afterward because we talked so much. It was so awesome to see him again.

On the subject of flirting, I mostly flirt for fun, and mostly with people who I would never consider asking out either because they're good friends or I don't like them very much. I don't even give much thought to it, it pretty much happens naturally.

However, considering that I haven't had a girlfriend for a very long time, I am not sure how well I am flirting with people who I do ask out.

Meh. I really don't see the problem with this. I've got several friends (both guy and gal) who are just flirty. It's just their personality, it's fairly easy to pick up on this type of person rather than one who's flirting because they're interested. One chick keeps surprise hugging me...and every single time my arms are pinned to my side.

Some would say it's being flirty, but I think she's just trying to keep me from retaliating :smalltongue:

I officially matriculated today with a big ceremony, silly clothing and Latin. I am now an actual member of Oxford University rather than just a member of Merton College which was what I was before.
I walked around town for about an hour with a friend in our full subfusc (girl version (http://www.stx.ox.ac.uk/system/files/images/subfuscfem.img_assist_custom.jpg) (but I wore trousers and a blazer too) and boy version (http://www.stx.ox.ac.uk/system/files/images/subfusc.img_assist_custom.jpg). The gowns worn are the undergraduate gowns, there're more of them, but that's what I wore) and a band of German tourists stopped as and asked why we were wearing such things. And we had our mortarboards on too. Because we could.
There were thousands of us just walking around, sometimes posing for photos or just acting as if it was completely normal.
Midly surreal it was.

Miffed though because we had to be up and in full subfusc at eight in the morning for the fussiest class photo I've ever had to pose for, and then personal ones and then walking to the ceremony proper.
'Twas cold. And many missed breakfast, not me, but many did.

Gap year or three, work, etc, then the Acadamy of Wing Chun in the Gold Coast :smallbiggrin: Moving back to queensland to go there and get a Cert IV in Sports Coaching - Wing Chun, and then open up a martial arts school somewhere.

And I'm restricted to a certain level of noise outside of Music Hours. I don't mind so much as I have magical headphones, but I tend to sing along and Next Door Neighbour doesn't like me singing along.

To all the people applying for uni, I'd recommend taking a gap year if possible. If you're moving from undergrad to postgrad, I'd certainly recommend a gap year then. I moved straight from school to uni and then onto postgrad study and it's exhausting. All the joy I once got from study has burned out, and its the same for most people I know who went straight through. The people I know who took a gap year got time to relax and remember why they wanted to study.

Plus, they got to travel the world. Which is cool.

I'm thinking of a gap year before going onto postgrad studies. Mainly because I need this thing called 'money', and . . .
Just money really.
I'm going to have this big debt to pay off, and I want money before I embark upon postgrad studies.
I'm thinking a Masters and a PhD/Doctorate.
Then I can get myself a cushy job somewhere.

I on't particularly think a gap year is a good thing betwixt (UK) college and (UK) uni though as some gap year students fail to take up their place through sheer 'laziness', and it can be really quite difficult in some unis to get a place if you ask for deferred entry.
Travelling would be nice though. I've always wanted to go to Egypt and Iceland myself.

What if you've already seen the world? :smallbiggrin: Last year I spent 6 weeks in Scotland, and a week in Belgium. I've lived in Bangladesh for ten years, before that India since I was born, and I've vacationed in Thailand. I don't want to see the world, I've seen enough.

Plus, seeing as I have never lived in what will soon be my place of residence (erm... 9 months? I graduate in June so, really any time after that...), I wouldn't have a house to live in (unless I threw myself at the feet of one of my many relatives, which would be kinda awkard. They're nice people but its one thing to visit its another thing to say: I can't drive, I've never lived in the US and I have no work experience but I want some; will you feed me for the next year? :smallbiggrin:. I could live with my grandparents but they live in a retirement community and that would be... weird).

So yes, I have no interest in these so called "gap years".

Yeah, good point, though I tend to think that if someone doesn't take up their place through laziness then they probably wouldn't have enjoyed uni much anyway. It's much better if you genuinely want to study.

I don't remember anywhere minding deferred entry when I applied, but that was before the fee rises and the application numbers jumped so high, so I can kinda see why some places might not like it now. It'd be easy to apply during the gap year though, and you'd actually have A-Levels, not just predicted grades which'd help the application process.

If you do go for a PhD, scour the net for research councils funding in your area of study. My funding's more than some people I know's job pay (and it's tax free!). It's really hard to self-fund.

I really hope a PhD will lead to a cushy job. I'd like to get more from mine than the ability to tick the "Dr" title box on forms, cool as that will be.

Edit: @/\ I'm in awe of your travel, sir. I can see why a gap year wouldn't work for you. I still think it's a good option for most people though.

ION: I am more sick than I can say of writing this methodology chapter. The damn thing is now 7600 words long and it's maybe 2/3 finished. It's the weekend. There shouldn't be writing, there should be relaxation. Maybe some wine. *sigh*

True, true; but they could also have lost their motivation or something. But generally, I'd agree with you. In fact, quite a few people who go to uni drop out for not enjoying it or being able to keep up with the work.
Here's a moronic example for dropping out of uni. And my Mum heard this from the mother in question, I'll paraphrase:
"I drove my daughter up to university last year, and no less than an hour later was she phoning me up, in tears, begging for me to come take her home.
"So I went back and within the hour we were both on our way home and I'd wasted a lot of money."
It wasn't homesickness either, she'd almost entirely filled out the dropping out forms (or whatever) by the time her mum came back to uni to talk to her.

If it's a course highly in demand, or the course a university is particularly famed for, they're about twenty percent less likely to accept someone on deferred entry and would rather they just applied the next year with everyone else so they don't show undue preferment.

@^: Really? That sucks. I've got manatory enough writing on the weekends. One 2 - 3 500 word essay a week'll do that to you. It's all research and a little writing today. I have an entire page worth of notes and references just from secondary and primary sources, and I haven't even begun pulling quotations from the books in question yet.
And this is my longer week too! I don't have to hand in the essay until Wednesday whereas next week it's in Tuesday before noon! And next Saturday I want to get Best Friend up here.

Empirical research just means conducting experiments essentially. In social science it's usually done through interviewing or analysing statistical data. It's really rare in law, where most research is still done through analysing the legislation and case law alone. I'm conducting interviews to see how the law I'm focusing on has been applied in practice.

Most finished theses I've seen have been around 400-450 pages, but that includes all the random bits like bibliographies, dedications and annexes and the like. The thesis itself has to be under 100 000 words, which is closer to 250-300 pages, I think.

To pass a PhD, you have to pass an exam called the viva (or viva en voce technically) where you have to defend your thesis to two academics in the field who ask questions about the arguments and the methodology used. They usually last a couple of hours and it's a damn scary prospect.

My thesis is examining an area of EC commercial law. Since theses are so specific and my details are up on various academic websites, telling you precisely what it's on kinda lets me found by anyone with the ability to perform a Google search, but if you want more details you can PM me (but it's pretty dull if you have no interest in commercial EC law).

I'll take you off my list of people to beat with my big book when I pass :smallwink:

I never seen a whole thesis before, but I've naturally read bits of them for research, and the bibliographies etc. must be enormous and really comprehensive to make up those hundred odd extra pages.

I'd say to start in the TAVERNA. Maybe.

It's sort of free. It's free until level 4, where you can either spend Turbine Points that you earn in game to be able to level up, or you can spend real money and actually manage to get to level 20 some time in the next decade. It's possible to access everything for free, but really really hard.

I went to my first concert yesterday! I'm proud, because I didn't die in a mosh pit and I didn't lose my voice. There actually was a mosh pit, which didn't make any sense, because no hardcore music was played... I guess people were just pushing to make the experience as inconvenient as possible. :smalltongue:

Anyway, It was The Academy Is..., Mayday Parade, and a few little opening bands that I don't remember the names of (I think one was called The Secret Handshake?). It was at the House of Blues in San Diego. I really came for TAI, though, so I left before Mayday Parade because it was like 10:30PM and I was tired of getting squished. But that's okay, because they gave me a signed poster before the show and talked to me (sort of).

Anyway, I was about five feet away from the band, which was the most exciting thing ever. So, when the lead singer, William Beckett, jumped out onto the railing in front of the crowd, I could touch him. That sounds fangirlish in retrospect but it seemed pretty important at the time. It was not the kind of opportunity one passes up.

It was kinda sad how all of the bands said, "You guys are the best fans ever!" and the crowd really believed that they meant it. They also got really excited when they said, "Hey, San Diego!" :smalltongue:

I also went to the beach this weekend, but that's not as fun as this.

Yes, it's really nice. The teacher is able to have a presentation(so, PPT or word or whatever) and has a mic, and is able to mic other people (so like, in my Lit class we have "oral sharing", in Latin we can answer questions, etc). Its a good system. :smallsmile:

So I went to my first dance show tonight. That was interesting, pretty cool too.

Got yelled at for being a guy after the show because one of the dancers has a stalker or something, which was pretty weird, I have to admit.

Going to a sweet tooth party is all well and good. It's delicious and decadent and frankly, desirable.

However, as we're all students we naturally saw it as 'free food!' so most of us didn't bother to eat dinner beforehand and just waited to see how many sweets etc. there were at the party.

A dozen or more cakes and pies
Many packets of cookies and biscuits
Six large bars of white chocolate
and a really, really, large pile of chocolate buttons. I'm talking the buttons were in a pile that was five inches high at the apex high.
Plus marshmellows, more biscuits, jaffa cakes, fizzy drinks and fondue.

Sugars highs were experienced.
FOr me, insomnia then kicked in after I got back home. I believe I fell asleep around four or five o'clock.
I woke a little before eleven with a mouth that felt thick and gooey. Generally quite disgusting.
And this is on top of my body's hatred of myself. I always wake up in tthe morning with a stinking cold and feeling like something you'd find on the bottom of your shoes. But the moment I get up: poof! It clears up almost immediately.

That plus what I term a sugary hangover was not happy.

Also I ended up having a funny debate with my friends.
I asked them which sweet I should eat first: the purple Quality Street one, or the blue conconut one out of the same tin.
This eventually dissolved into creating makeshift Archimede's baths to find out which one had the highest mass before going on into realms of even more advanced science. But all involving chocolate.
Bizarre. And yet I understood all they talked about. Until they got to hitting the chocolates with an electron gun to . . . something something.
And I didn't even get to eat the sweets as they got wet and icky in the experiment.

I had no idea that classed as teetotal. By that definition, I'm teetotal, which I'm sure would surprise everyone who knows me and knows of my love for rum. I just have to work most evenings, although that said, I have written essays drunk before.

Kids, don't do that. Sobriety aids education.
