How does progressing a prestige class' spellcasting beyond its progression work?
There are many prestige classes that give a character spells, but let's reference one that is in the game's core for the sake of easy access.

Assassin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/assassin.htm)
Arcane Trickster (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/arcaneTrickster.htm)
We have a Rogue 6 who becomes an Assassin at level 7. He progresses as an assassin until level 16, where he runs out of Assassin levels. Our rogue then takes a level of Wizard to be able to cast Mage Hand (XD). Then, our Character wants to take 3 levels in Arcane Trickster for his last three levels, improving his Assassin casting.
Is he SOL? Why? Is it only because the Assassin list doesn't continue past 4th level spells, or is it because the progression stops? Can he not gain any more caster levels beyond 10 for his Assassin spells?
