...Wow.

Okay, what was the dream about? Please?

It wasn't that interesting, actually. The bit with Murphy's Law was just that I was on some website about the meaning behind names, and I saw the name Lloyd and made the connection to the comic. I think in my dream it meant 'warrior' or something.
More interesting was the fact that just before I woke up, my dad (in the dream) asked if I wanted to watch a movie. I said 'yes' out loud as I woke up.

...Okay then.

Uhm, if I may ask, what do you like/dislike about the comic?

Well, I like Matt. He's endearing in his own way, and I like how he interacts with the other characters, especially Lloyd. I think he's going to be one of the more interesting characters (though it's a bit too early to tell for sure). I'd like to see a canon explanation for why he went into INSTA-PANIC MODE when the guard mentioned tossing him in max for the rest of his life. Sure, it's not exactly something to be overjoyed about, but from what I've seen of him so far, there has to be more reason than "I'll be locked up for life, guaranteed" for him to go immediately from sarcastic and mildly annoyed to begging and trying to make a plea deal. Until a reason is given in-comic, I'm going with the Belkar/Matt fic from a while back.

The layout of the speech bubbles is sometimes confusing, like in the last panel of #16, but you've already explained why you did that. I honestly can't think of any other complaints.

Word of advice: adventurers never do anything manually. Long poles to push things, Molotov cocktails to open wooden doors, and above all, summoned monsters to do anything vaguely dangerous or humiliating. Nothing like a cleric calling upon the forces of her God to condense the forces of Good into the shape of...a monkey. That is then used to put on a new helmet, just to check. And then explodes, justifying the use of the monkey.

Or maybe that's just my groups.

Nope. When we played Shackled City, we had a Fiendish Ape that got used for a lot of dangerous stuff. Justified as "it's a Fiendish Ape, so making it suffer is a Good act." I doubt PETA would agree...

How about the toxin from the spider's fangs? I hear a pint of Acromantula venom is worth a 100 galleons...

While giving out song lyrics in the Crack Pairings Thread, I might as well give one for Lloyd as well:

THE OATH Lyrics
Artist(Band):Kiss

Like a blade of a sword I am forged in flame
Fiery hot
Tempered steel fire-bright to the night I take
I fear not
Now compelled by something I cannot see
I go forth surrendering to history

Your glory, I swear I run for thee
Your power, I trust it runs with me
Your servant, I am and ever shall I be

Through a dream
I have a come to an ancient door
Lost in the mist
I have been there a hundred times or more
Pounding my fists
Now inside, the fire of the ancient burns
A boy goes in and suddenly a man returns

Your glory, I swear I run for thee
Your power, I trust it runs with me
Your servant, I am and ever shall I be

I gave my word and gained a key
I gave my heart and set it free
There's no turning back from this odyssey
Because I feel so alive suddenly
And I wonder, is this really me?

The next comic's going to actually have a lot of Inkscape experimentation and practice--People in water, individual trees, crumpled clothes, etc.

Those things might be a bit tricky to do in Inkscape and #17 will be good practice.

I'm fairly certain that's not the right way to woo a person like Lloyd. She really needs a less chaotic approach.

Fun. Like the visuals, though the 90* turn by Radic seemed too forced. She seems like she should have been looking at the fight, not where he had been standing. And armor loses it's shape when not on the body. Her clothes seem fine, and I like that yu included items that normally we don't see. Because of the realism, people. Get your minds out of the gutter!

Also, is that an Artemis reference? I'm seeing a lot of parallels.

Well, her domains are Sun, Water, Fire, Good, and Protection. She's not really the goddess of anything specific, per se.

It takes a few hours for me to draw a comic; I do about 99% of the planning before actually sitting down and making the comic. But it takes me about 2-4 hours, depending on how complex the comic is. Sometimes it can take longer.

*reads comic* I love it!

I like how you changed Janine's hair after it got wet. Attention to detail gets you an Internet Cookie.

Nitpicking:
You still have issues with speech bubbles; the short lines are especially jarring. Writing and arranging the text first and then drawing the speech bubble around it might help get a better text shape.

Also, I agree with Asta Kask: it's not clear that Janine fell in accidentally. Maybe give her (o 0) eyes in the second to last panel? Although she's really too nonchalant for that...

Or you could make the "Slip!" unsound effect more obvious?

Yeah, it ain't easy being the sane man in a crazy world. And it's impossible to tell that it's a stink bomb. I advice adding some dialogue to make it clear. Either Matt thinking "hmm... stink bomb" or Radic saying "NO! No stink bombs."

Is Matt getting paid? Or is this part of his rehabilitation?

(Now I want to hear Radic and Matt's! Please?)

Matt is difficult, because rogues don't generally attract much attention from the rock'n'roll crowd. So I'll go with the easy route:

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay
Ain't it sad
And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me
That's too bad
In my dreams I have a plan
If I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all, I'd fool around and have a ball

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha -ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world

A man like that is hard to find but I can't get him off my mind
Ain't it sad
And if he happens to be free I bet he wouldn't fancy me
That's too bad
So I must leave, I'll have to go
To Las Vegas or Monaco
And win a fortune in a game, my life will never be the same

It's a rich man's world...

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha -ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world
It's a rich man's world

But honestly, we know so little about Matt yet (and I fully understand why this is, so it's no criticism) that it's difficult to figure out a good song. For instance, if he's tougher and more streetwise than we have seen so far, then this may be a good fit:

I'm a creature of the street
And I rip off all the money
I was kicked in the teeth
Shoved face first through a window
I got a gangland name
And a teardrop tattooed eye
They call me Little Caesar in the brotherhood of crime
I know about the pain
Dyin' in an alley with an
air-conditioned brain
I know, it's for real
Flatlined in an ambulance
Without a pulse to feel

Hey blood brother, you're one of our own
You're as sharp as a razor
And as hard as a stone
Hey blood brother, you're bad to the bone
You're a natural killer
In a bad place alone

They call me Smoky Joe
And I'm as thin as a coroner's needle
I got a pocket full of rocks
Man, I shake like a cold chihuahua
I got a runny nose
And a road map on my arm
I blew my gig pokin' 'round the gallery
With someone else's rig
I know, I understand
I watch my body hauled off
By the local garbage man

Hey blood brother, you're one of our own
You're as sharp as a razor
And as hard as a stone
Hey blood brother, you're bad to the bone
You're a natural killer
In a bad place alone

We're cool, we're cold
We're stiff, we're tagged
We're slabbed, we're croaked
We're whacked, we're cracked
We're smoked and cured and
slammed and slurred and
sliced and diced and put on ice
Cooked and stewed and badly brewed
And splattered once or twice

This is a considerably darker Matt, closer to e.g. Gavroche in Les Miserables.

Radic? I'll have to look for a while; I can't think of any nature-oriented lyrics right now. I won't go to Pink Floyd for it, that much I know...

Ok, the best I can do for Radic...

You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind

Butterfly wings,
Emerald rings,
Or a murmuring brook,
Murmuring, murmuring, murmuring...look,
I'm calm,
I'm calm,
I haven't a qualm,
I'm utterly under control.
Let nothing confuse me
Or faze me-- [yawn] --
Excuse me.
I'm calm.
Oh so calm.
Oh so--

[PSEUDOLUS (offstage):]
Hysterium!

[HYSTERIUM]
I'm calm,
I'm calm,
I'm perfectly calm,
Indifferent to tensions and shocks.
Unruffled and ready,
My nerves are as steady
As rocks.
I'm calm, controlled,
So cool that I'm cold,
Aloofer than any giraffe.
When something's the matter,
Where others would shatter
I laugh. [Laughs hysterically]
I must breathe deep, ever so deep,
Think about sheep
Going to sleep,
Stop and count up to ten, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9...when
You need aplomb
And want to be calm
'Cause life is a horrible dream,
Just count up to ten
Very slowly, and then--

[PSEUDOLUS (offstage):]
Hysterium!

[HYSTERIUM]
[screams]

Or even this:

I am the man who walks alone
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night or strolling through the park

When the light begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when it's dark

Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have constant fear that something's
always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's
always there

Have you run your fingers down
the wall
And have you felt your neck skin crawl
When you're searching for the light?
Sometimes when you're scared
to take a look
At the corner of the room
You've sensed that something's
watching you

Have you ever been alone at night
Thought you heard footsteps behind
And turned around and no one's there?
And as you quicken up your pace
You find it hard to look again
Because you're sure there's
someone there

Watching horror films the night before
Debating witches and folklore
The unknown troubles on your mind
I know your mind is playing tricks
You sense, and suddenly eyes fix
On dancing shadows from behind

Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have constant fear that something's
always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark

Criticism: if you meant the gold pieces to be those used by humans, they are far too big. Yes, those in OotS are bigger than your average coin (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0187.html), but it's less flagrant. The shadow also feels out of place when the party members don't have shadows themselves. The background changing between the fifth and last panel when the camera didn't bulge is a little jarring as well. Speaking of this background, the top of one of the tree above the hoard in the fifth panel is blurred.

You know what this hoard makes me think about? A dragon coating all of his treasure with instant poison deadly to all but dragons... :smallamused:

Ah, whoops. I'll shrink the coins in the next comic. (Also, it's meant to signify that it's a BIG hoard.)

Whoops to the blur again. That was Inkscape's fault.

Rich has the background change too. And the occasional shadow.

But thank you. *Writes down comments for later use*

I know Rich Burlew uses these. I don't mind the different background because it's a style like any other, but I still find it jarring, though you have to keep in mind it's only my opinion. As for the shadows, they were used only once because of the Weary Travelers inn catching fire and it was foreshadowed earlier with the discussion between the Shadowdancer and his lascivious companion. Compared to that, the shadow in this comic looks random and out of place.

And shrink the coins in this comic, you lazy you. :smallwink:

I'd actually wait for other opinions about the shadow before deciding to ditch it. I don't actually know the first thing about storytelling or comic-making, after all. Yours is the only fancomic I read besides Anti-Heroes, but I'm sure there are enough readers here with their own comic who can give more fitting advice.

I actually wanted to make something for the current Iron Avatarist context about Anti-Heroes (because it needs fanart love too), but I'm all out of will to do anything with Inkscape even if the idea's in my mind since the second I learned its subject. The same is happening with your comic, too, unfortunately.

Anyway, it kinda makes me laugh to see Radic so happy about all this gold. A druid shouldn't care about material wealth. :smallwink:

February vacation? We have that in Sweden - it's called sportlov (sport is the same, lov is vacation). Traditionally, people go to the mountains for breaking their legs skiing, if they can afford it. No, his job is to slay the dragon that's menacing their town.

He said that if they can't track down the dragon by using a shed scale, then they can track down the dragon by using its hoard.

Hmm... interesting. I don't think we have any holidays like that. Not to honor individuals. We celebrate the king's birthday (well, some of us do...) but there's no work for the simple reason that it's also Walpurgis.

As for smileys - take it up with Roland. I think it's a great idea, and someone has to be the first to suggest it. Now, the mods may not like it, because everyone would want their own smileys and it could become impossible to handle, but... go for it! Hm. I have no idea who that is.

Beltane is another spring festival, Gaelic this time. Let's celebrate nature by piling as much of it as possible into a large heap and set fire to it. St. Walpurga is apparently the patron saint of people who have rabies.

(Although bonfire originally means bone-fire - after you had slaughtered all but the bare minimum of animals during the autumn festival, you took the bones and set fire to them.)

You can read more about Walpurgis Night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpurgis_Night) here.

The four major Gaelic festivals (if you want to know about it for Radic - would be a nice bit of flavor) were Samhain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain), Imbolc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imbolc), Beltain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beltain), and Lughnasa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lughnasa).

Anyway, nice comic. I get what you were doing with the last panel, although it might have worked better if you moved everyone along to the right, left a space, and then had the shadow on the ground coming from off-panel...

Hmm... that "dragon" looks less like a dragon and more like a humanoid with wings and spikes on its head... Half-Dragon? That would also explain the unorthodox tactic of sneaking up behind them, since although dragons do sometimes deviate from the normal alignment for their type, half-dragons are more likely to do so.

If it's a full dragon, though, they're pretty screwed, considering Young Adult is the stage of a dragon's life when it gets Damage Reduction and Spell Resistance. Heck, even if it's a half-dragon they're pretty screwed... class levels.

Then again, I guess they're kind of screwed anyway by virtue of living in a comic based around Murphy's law. And it's funny to see adventurers in bad situations.

Can't wait for the next comic. And I would very much like the character smileys!

On the other hand, he does have vampire fangs. Hmm... dragon vampire... dual-wielding sickles... hmm... dragon vampire ranger...

Matt probably got off best, though, since he has evasion. Shouldn't the other three have wounds on their bodies? Otherwise it's all good. And Matt, never tell a dragon it has no love-life. It doesn't make things better. Ask Closak.

Nitpick: Dragons are not magical beasts, they are Dragons. They are covered by Knowledge (Arcana) though. This is why they need a wizard (oh, and the fireballs).

This must be a really, really weak acid since the team is unscathed. This is why I'm asking what it was in the first place. It did no damage.

Yeah, that needs to be fixed. They should have taken a lot of damage, except possibly (probably) Matt. But I expect it will all sort itself out. Or this was a hint of some murky secret of the dragon. Perhaps it gurgles with Listerine?

A dragon's breath weapon isn't like that in D&D. There's no hit roll, so you don't miss. Think of it more as a flamethrower or a grenade going off - everything in it's path is scorched (bar Evasion).

Don't get me wrong - I like the comic. But this isn't straight by D&D rules (OTOH I think those rules are a mite silly, so...)

Coffee, Water-Smurf advises you. This makes me obligated to expect rape to have happened at least twice to each character before they hit adulthood.

Also, this being a 2D comic, it's really difficult to think "he missed" instead of "why aren't they wounded?"

Not really, but I googled it and got some idea. Two children's shows from the days of your youth?

The dragon eats them all and goes to sleep?

Dragons are evil creatures, so Lloyd should be able to lay some smackdown with Smite Evil. Janine can either go Astrid's Might or cast Holy Smite and probably some other spells I can't remember. Radic should really show us some bear-hugs because who wouldn't want to be hugged by Radic. And Matt should stand somewhere where he can sneak attack the dragon - although this might end with his intestines wrapped around him in a festive manner.
