Welcome to the 30th ABR Discussion Thread!

Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)

Avatar Battle Royale: Avatarmageddon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7000298) is the current thread. Post artwork there.

The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), is used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.

I did some more art, and I want your opinions. Then I want your advice on an issue I have

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w27/bloddyredcommie/DSF.png

Here's the thing. The Protagonist (From the Domestic Security Forces side) is the guy in the top right, and I like the character design I made for him, he's fairly straight laced and professional, Lawful Neutral to the core if you want to throw around DnD terms. The only problem is (And this is a problem anytime you are designing a character in uniform) he looks too generic. He's a DSF officer, but there is almost nothing to differentiate him from any generic background DSF officers I have lying around. I could make them all bald, which would be easy, but even then all that differentiates him is his hair, which due to the hat, you can barely see.

Also, the top three characters are all named, while the bottom are generic designs. The guy in the middle top is usually wearing the same uniform as the guy top-right, but I wanted to show off the coat they wear when it's cold/rainy outside.

So yeah, any comments on the designs? Or advice for my dillema.

Actually, typically a man lasts between 5 and 10 minutes if all they're doing is the act. But if they do other things as well it lasts longer, yes.

But the conversation is inappropriate.

You want to make him more recognizable? Give him a pompom hat (comes with his rank). Or long sleeves (different uniform style). Or an eye patch (very easily noticed). Or a scar on the face (same deal).

The problem is distinguishing him from other people of his same rank. Also, it would be nice to have something distinguishing about him when he's out of uniform. And considering his personality, he's unlikely to alter his uniform, even in ways nobody would care about.

Ooh, I like the idea of an Eyepatch or scar. He could get it in the first "Chapter" as it were.
Any general comments on the artwork, or other suggestions for making him more distinguishable.

Artwork seems like your usual style, except that it's way more detailed. (going off of what I remember of Rob&Jack) Not sure if that's a good thing or not because while they contribute to the "wow, a lot of work was put in to this", it can be a bit visually "messy" in my opinion.

Rebooted Q is a pacifist and quite possibly a ladies man, unlike his violent and dateless predessesor. I think I'd add quite a few more flaws on him to balence it out, though. You'll see. :smalltongue:

Hey, everybody, I'm working on a new backstory comic! Exile didn't work out, even though it totally had an awesome story (it would have, honest! :smalltongue:), so this one will explain the origins...of Henny, my constant unchanging avatar, also known as The Gremlin for unknown reasons.

It's going to be set in Runescape, and I have reasons for that:

1. I have actually wanted to do a Runescape comic for quite some time. However, I never really had the time to do a bunch of comics. I already don't make comics in ABR. However, merging the backstory comic with this would work great. It gives me lots of new ideas, too.

2. Actually, the first one pretty much covers it. I'll just repeat myself: I have actually wanted to do a Runescape comic for quite some time. However, I never really had the time to do a bunch of comics. I already don't make comics in ABR. However, merging the backstory comic with this would work great. :smallwink:

It will use bad-style artwork, and MS Paint (again, no choice about it).

Thoughts? As long as I don't hear anybody saying 'Runescape sucks', critique for the idea is welcome.

Sounds interesting, though I'll advice you to stay from using too much of the game's backstory, even with really popular games it's often lost on the readers who didn't do exactly that sidequest that reveal it, and Runescape, while not bad is a game few seem to have interest in and even fewer may know the relevant history. Again not saying it's a bad game, it was pretty fun when I played it.

The idea is that everything relevant to the comic will be explained, possibly by use of the narrator. That way, there will be little confusion.

1. This is offensive to women. I as a man am offended by it. It is sexist and degrading to consider women pieces of meat that will just randomly sleep with any creep that proposes to them.

2. 7 minutes to satisfy 2 women ? One of which is supposedly a Kamina clone ? You are clearly giving yourself TOO MUCH credit. Oh, and in that time it is included the walk to a room with a bed, the taking off the clothes time...

Bayar, the seven minutes thing could be interpreted as a joke or the result of an inexperienced person.

As for offensiveness, I don't think that's how it was intended. But if you interpreted it as such, and it offended you, you do have that right. Which is why we should use my solution:

That was Q's daydream. Somebody will cast read mind and Q will be sufficiently beaten up.

Q gets mocked and bruised and I get the pie while people watch the smackdown. Everybody wins.

First thing, I was arguing that a woman can make something that is sexist against women. Not that such a woman would be "sexist against herself". In any case, a woman who believed that men were inherently superior to women would be sexist against women. And would be regarded as such if she publicised her views.
If something is sexist, I don't see how it could suddenly stop being sexist just because you found out the gender of the author. It would still be just as sexist as before.

I'm giving honest critique here. The game has a lot of glitched and has changed for the worst. For example, the drow race used to be a reward for playing well, a race that was hard to unlock. A status symbol. Now, it's a reward for giving the video game people shiny green paper. They haven't even made the drow less powerful, either. :smallannoyed:

Nah, we may be a significant part, but Stickied threads should serve a vital function in the forum, not just be important.

And I don't think it was our roman discussion that got us shut down last thread. I remember we had some other politicalish discussion going on, I don't think the mods minded our discovery that Grem is, in fact, The emperor Caligula.

It wasn't roman politics, it was likely the discussion of a certain war and the events that lead to it that ran for three pages.

But, as it got the thread shut once before, I think that's as much as we should say on the subject.

I don't think there's any point in ABR being stickied. It would just make more hassle for the mods, and it's not really likely we'll drop off the first page due to inactivity.
As for the 50 page limit, in a perfect forum we'd have the new thread up before we get onto page 51, but the mod's are stretched thin on Giant. As such, they only generally turn up rule-breaking posts are reported, and will of course lock the thread if it's already hit 50 pages, that's standard procedure.

I think you're addicted to self superiority. But I have you beat: I DID read the rules this time. It never says that there is no time limit, that things from five thousand years ago are still considered 'real world events' that need to be banned. When one looks at something banning mention of politics, he generally assumes that this rule is out to prevent flame wars.

I actually requested that this be made clear, but the mod I spoke too informed me that it 'goes without saying'. Well, I didn't get it, and I doubt many would. If I am wrong and everybody else understands it, please inform me of such, because right now, it seems that you are just trying to toot your own horn and tell me that you are a responsible citizen who always reads the rules.

Sorry if this comes across as harsh (I expect it does), but I'm a bit fed up with what I tend to interpret as your sense of self-superiority.

And of course, you had strayed into discussing far more recent politics.

Guys, I have a little announcement to make. Or, should I say, Mad Mask! Since I have already proven that he is the only one who reads my posts and he just tells everybody else if the posts are of not so that everybody can gang up on me and make me lose the argument miserably.

Aliens: Keep thinking that, Gremlin.

Um, anyways, I am planning on leaving ABR. I don't really enjoy the Discussion thread anymore, since I feel that I am not bringing much to the table. I have gotten numerous hints that I am not that welcome here, as well. On top of that, I don't have time for drawing the comics, and they just end up looking lousy, anyways, especially now that I don't have Inkscape.

I will continue to watch these threads, of course. I harbor no ill feeling towards anybody here, not even DLB (:smalltongue:). But I just can't do this. I'm tired of feeling guilty for not making comics, and feeling guilty for not getting off the computer when I do make comics.

I will try to stay an active member of the ABR community, as I am very fond of you guys. I have some goodwill messages to some of you, because I felt the need to make some goodwill messages. Not sure why. It's kind of melodramatic, like I'm dying or something.

Keris: I just thought you should know that me leaving has nothing to do with the argument we were having. So you can stop bragging. :smalltongue:

DLB: Again, I am sorry we never got along. I think we are fairly alike (besides the age difference), which may offend you, but which could account for the reason we can't stand each other. We certainly have our differences, and we don't have the same opinions, but I saw a lot of similarities between us in your mumbling thingy.

Keveak: Just thought I'd say that you're probably my favorite person here. Anybody who can stick a '' in every post regardless of its content tends to cheer me up. You are the ultimate optimist.

Mad Mask: What are you doing reading melodramatic, pointless cliche messages? Get back to work on FI!

To the rest of you: Farewell, and sorry for the sappy bit there. In the immortal words of Red Green, 'Keep your stick in the ice.'
Of course, he also came up with the idea of using an indeterminate mixture that he found in the barn after the cow died to burn off paint, so...yeah, I don't think he should be quoted that much.

P.S. Oh, by the way, I would like my characters to all be provided for. If anybody is willing to take on a cloaker vampire, a kobold rogue, and Nilmerg himself, let me know. I'd rather they not fade.

There was a lengthy flashback that took place during a war between the elves and the empire, (an Orc was working for the empire in that flashback), but that was most me just doing an idea that had come to mind than anything.

Will each "Chapter" have a regular length, or will it vary?
It will likely vary. Each chapter will be more based around a singular event. It may focus more on one protagonist or another. I don't know, alot of this stuff is still fairly conceptual right now.

For example, I know the first chapter will be based around a specific riot and the actions of the two protagonists during it that establish them as outstanding members of the DSF and the rebel movement respectively. After that I may spend some time filling in the background details, about the nation it takes place in, the government, the reason for the unrest, ect.

The one thing I can't decide is the general tech level. Currently I'm thinking WWI ish, with some steampunk if I feel like it. I dunno. I should probably just make the first comic (Which I've already mostly written). I'll probably just post it here to use you guys as a sample group before I decide if I really want to do the project. If I do, I'm going to try to build up a sizable buffer and do more regular updates, rather than making and posting them as I feel like it.

Great template, though. I especially like the pipes that connect the brain to the robot body, it looks more "realistic".

Alrighty, here's my first attempt at TJHR Brain:

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/braintjhr.png

So...yep. In this continuity, Brain doesn't have any Psionic or magical powers and is instead a brilliant scientist and gadgeteer extraordinaire. He's also slightly more predisposed towards violence than TJH Brain, relying on his powerful suit and gadgets to fight.

Cool, I might make a rebooted Moss template too one of the days

It is? Huh. I thought it was like FFF: R, with a separate continuity and such.

Well, if it is the same continuity, then forget about what I wrote. The suit would just be an upgrade, I guess.

Thanks, by the way.

I'm still subscribed. I said I'd try to remain active. However, Rand still posts too. He still isn't in ABR anymore.

And RAND got lots of attention when he left! When I left, about three people noticed! :smallsigh:

This is why I grew to hate ABR. I would put a lot of effort into my longer posts. They were deeply sincere. And nobody ever paid attention. People just can't take me seriously, for some reason.

Well, I just made myself sad. So I'll do something sincere.

Goodbye. To be quite honest, I lied. I never enjoyed ABR. People always had a problem with me. And I will carry grudges. I'm sorry, for what it's worth.

I guess it's too late now, but I'm going to miss this guy.

Not a lot, but I do feel a little sad that somebody hates ABR.

You know, not posting isn't the same as not listening. It may be the same as not caring, since I didn't care enough to stop you from leaving. Very few people, if anybody, did. I think it's because you were a whiney little speck complaining about stuff and never posts comics. I know this is a stupid reason, but I care a lot more about people when they post comics. I respect them as an equal and not as a fanboy. If you left back when you made crappy comics on Microsoft Paint, I would probably protest. But you don't anymore and haven't for a while so I just don't care.

I guess this would've made a lot bigger of an impact if I posted this before he left.

I'd rather they not fade.

...I'm a bit depressed at how few people replied to this :smallfrown:
Shame on you, ABRites! *waggles finger at everyone who didn't reply*

In other news, I'm rather confused as to exactly what's happening with FI at the moment, but here's an idea for another character:

Name is Dust. He's kind of a vigilante opposing the UNA, as they harmed him/his family/something in the past (I don't know exactly what's going on with the UNA, i.e. are they secretly doing some kind of human experiments or some kind of bad stuff). He basically just tries to stop anything having to do with the UNA, and treats anyone affiliated with them as an enemy. He's seen as kind of a serial killer, having a very distinctive weapon: he uses these blades that hook onto his fingers as essentially "claws" to slice, dice, and eviscerate people. Well...maybe not eviscerate, but it's fun to say :smallwink:. His face is covered in bandages, except for one eye. Assorted pics: (got bored in classes, sketched some designs, vectored them 'cause I screwed up some stuff)

That's because you never left, you can't expect people to notice you leaving if you don't.Rand got more attention for two reasons one because he has been in ABR from the start and is a controversial figure and two because he actually physically left, he went like a month without posting you haven't managed to go 24 hours without posting. Heres the thing Grem, you engage in arguments, then say nobody here likes you. You say you're quitting, and then stick around to see how people react, and say your going to try to stay active, which means all you're not doing is posting comics, which you don't do anyway.

What you're doing is the equivalent of storming out of the room, then peeking through the window to see how people react. Plus, IIRC, you've done this sort of thing before. It just makes it seem like you want attention, and you get it either by provoking arguments, or by pretending to quit.
I don't know if that's your intent, but it's what I'm getting from you.

Really good. One thing I'd say is it seems rather...shrunk. I'd maybe leave it a bit bigger so that the panels are less confusing. It's also hard to read the text in the smaller font (or whatever you used for dates and times). Other than that, I think it's great.

I was reffering to the fact that some of the people have no faces. It's my way of showing the dehumanization each side does to the other. Comics/panels from the Rebel perspective show the DSF as faceless drones blindly following orders. Comics/Panels from the loyalist perspective show Rebels as faceless animals trying to tear down the government.

I tried to show it best in the last panel. The same scene from two different perspectives. The Loyalist scene has the DSF with faces, the guy holding a gun, and the crowd faceless. The Rebel version has the DSF faceless, the crowd with faces, and the guy holding a Flask. I figured showing the same scene with the Faces switched from two different perspectives would carry across that it's a perspective thing.

The grass is not always greener on the other side (We say that in Denmark, don't know an equivalent in English). Why would a girl want to be one, they are violent, controlled by hormones and the only good stuff are fairly minor and most should be the same for girls.

And we, on average, live seven years than you female types.

Less or longer?

EDIT:
If we live longer then that would be the sole really good thing, that is until eternal life is invented :smalltongue:

It's the same here. At least, in the Mid-West region of the US.

A man's man who watches Olivia Newton-John musicals but a mans man nonetheless.

Lies.
I also read somewhere that females are smarter and better cooks then men. Also lies.
Some of the greatest artists, scientists and chefs were/are men.

Gender has nothing to do with how smart, how creative or how well you can cook, that's defined by a number of other things.

We shouldn't count out that until a still quite recent time women simply weren't allowed to do any of these things professionally in most parts of the world, so men got a pretty good headstart in numbers.
