I really hope this project don't die...

Hey! I welcome all of you to our Comic Lab in the Playground!

But what is this comic lab, you ask? Well... As you may noticed we have a nice community of amateur comic creators over here and the main goal of this lab is to bring this community closer.

Its a place not only for us to expose our art, but to expose our ideas and techniques for comics (and also the art ).

Got a character idea? Bring it over here!
Got a comic idea? Well, just bring it over here!
Got a short story of a few comics? What the hell! Bring it over here!
Got some text you want to turn into a comic and need an artist? Well, you can try to ask it over here.
Got talent for art but no idea for a comic? Well, come over here!
Got some sort of tutorial to help out with some detail? Just bring it over here!

Need me to explain it a little more? Here is a comic explaining it for me!

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2010/ComicLab001.png

Ok, just a few more things:

I'll try to keep an index of stuff, so don't worry about it.
There are no actual rules here (except the forum rules).
This isn't an ABR clone. Sure, you can create a collaborative story/comic here. But if things start to get to close to ABR why don't just move it there?

About the new comics from the lab:

What is a "new comic from the lab"?

"New comics from the lab" are the comics that have, some how, started here. It may started from collaboration, new found partnership, input from other comic authors, etc. If on it's early moments that comic was here, it is a "NCFTL" (New Comic From The Lab) and The Comic Lab in the Playground support those comics.

My comic started here, but it isn't on the main post yet. What should I do?

Feel free to PM me about it. I'll be adding a banner of every NCFTL on the following list.

New Comics From The Lab:

most of the comic writers here (about 100% I believe) prefer to be the writer AND author. You might have better luck finding a real-life graphics artist.

Funny you should say that. My Comic, Interesting Combinations (Awaiting Approval; how long does it usually take?) involves a Gestalt Campaign. I've got a cast of characters set up, but I need a random reason for adventuring. Not really anything major, because I want to focus more on comedy, but a motive. Some MacGuffin or Plot coupon..

Well, I have an idea, that's not the usual adventurer story.

It is approximately one hundred years into the future. Cats and dogs are at war, fighting for reasons lost to time. Just recently, mechas were invented and are now beginning to fight.

The story follows a feline soldier and his friends and teammates.

So, what do you guys think?

I'd need to hear more, you should also explore things a little more, it should be more than "A war, where one side happens to be cats, and the other happens to be dogs". Think about Cats and Dogs.

Cats are stalkers and hunters. They hunt alone. Dogs are related to pack hunters, very social animals compared to the more territorial cats.
This should reflect in your characterization, I'm imagination the Dogs fight in well coordinated groups, while Cats prefer small guerrilla units. For Dogs, think about the roman legions for inspiration, for cats, look at the viet cong.

Also, remember the purpose of Mecha's. They are not Tanks, neither are they Airplanes, if you want somthing that fulfills those purposes, it's cheaper and easier to build a Tank or airplane than a mech that fills the same role. Anything a Mecha does should be something only a mech could do. Power Armor is a better route to take here, use them not as tanks, but as better infantry.

It doesn't. This is a place for everything we want to create that is related to comics. Many comics technics are independent of style by the way.

Yeah... Its really hard to find an artist.

Well... Random quests are about finding something in order to save something or retrive something to someone. :smalltongue:

First he must decide if he wants to go with cats or "felines". It is true that cats are stalkers and hunters, but I don't think they necessarily hunt alone. Just because most people have just one cat it doesn't mean they aren't social. I'm not entire sure about the domestical cat, but there are felines in the wild that have strong comunities, like the lions. Sure some of them are lonely hunters, but some do group together.

Hmm... I like the idea of different styles of fighting. I WAS thinking of adding a few more factions, such as a beaver nation that was industrial in nature, or maybe an eagle nation based on Blitzkrieg tactics, attacking swiftly, and leaving just as fast.

Anyway, I was thinking of the cats as mainly elite forces, such as the SAS. Of course, this would mean a smaller group. So, I'm thinking of the cat's nation being smaller, considering that a large amount of cat's would either be a part of a city-state, or go rogue. This, I guess, could mean that many of them could be hired mercenaries.

Actually, that could mean one of my characters could be a mercenary working for Nation C (The cat nation.) I like that. Another character.

On the dog's side, the Roman Empire could be a good inspiration, not only in tactics, but possibly in culture also. This could be a reason for war. Clashing of culture and idealogy, with the dog's more family-based and socially-based, with the cats being a more loner style, Nation C being odd for their kind, yet still based more on smaller, elite forces than Nation D (The dog nation.) with larger and more formal armies.

As for the mechas; well, I was thinking of making them similar to the Space Marine Dreadnought than the GUNDAMs. I guess a Power Armor would be better. Thanks for all the help.

You know, I think this thread is a really good idea. It'll help a lot of fancomic authors with ideas for comics.

Ooh.. I do remember that comic.

3 things about the new dragon:

1 - Eyes look.. weird... But maybe you are changing styles, I don't know.
2 - I've noticed the lack of "hands/claws" on the second one, don't that limit the character even more?
3 - I kind o miss the bones on the back of the dragon.

Oh! I just found out what made the eye look wrong... the horns! you have 2 horns and 1 eyes on the same point of view, that gives the viewer a notion of distortion and deformation.

The one with the Cazis? So I know what I could add or the other way around?

It's a comic that uses the natural conflict of two species to ilustrate the conflict among two groups. And I think that is part of what you are trying to achive

If we're giving Inkscape tips, I was able to create dreadlocks individually by making a pencil stroke really thick, using "curve" nodes to make them wavy, and then converting the stroke to a path, which basically puts a border around it.
Note that this won't really work for characters with black hair.

In inkscape, I have always used the pencil tool for lines, and then edited the nodes. What has everyone else been doing, because Crimson has apparently discovered this "accidentally," making me think that not everyone is using that.

As for phase's dragon, I like the old one better for some reason.

If you hold control (or shift, I can't really remember at the moment), while using the pencil tool (when clicking then clicking elsewhere), it creates straight lines up/down, left/right, and a few diagonals. Holding control also woeks when you are only trying to reduce one dimension on a rectangle.

I LOVED Dragon! Glad to hear that you're considering starting it up again.

I have to say though that I liked the original design better. It just seems more...absent minded, which a seem to remember described Jerry pretty well. Also, the new design just seems too animalish, and the old design was in between and it was easy to imagine a human mind in that body. The original design had a more MiTD feel to it, and this new body? It's just plain weird.

I think it's just the head, though. I like the simple and OOTS-style head of the original but I don't think I like the weird round eyes of the newer template. I think if the old head was placed on the new body it would be a vast improvement. The new body is very smooth and cool looking.

Of course, I loved Dragon so much I wouldn't really care what art style it's presented in.

In my opinion, your style is still OotS-style. The only differences are the outlined arms and the coloured lines. It's even closer to Burlewan artwork than my own drawings (which I would qualify of Burlewesque rather than Burlewan).

MethosH

Yeah... Some here. I think your style is a variation of OotS-style. None of use actually do the exacly OotS-style, we all add our own stuff to it. Some more than others. Some even question if Reallity is OotS or not.

If you have a guide to your art please share it : )

Since we're talking about style...
My "style" itself has changed from itself over the past year or two.

I started with really thick lines at 4 pixels.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard3.png

Then I sort of cleaned up that style.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Szilard4.png

For my more detailed avatars I made the stroke two, and later stuck with that for all my stick art.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/Mindflayerone.png http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/mrsuavetwo.png

And then I made my torsos thinner and a bit taller to make it more OotS style.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd233/SzilardG/szilardavatar1.png

The main difference between my style and Rich's is that my eyes are closer, and my limb measurements are probably a bit off. In fact, the only thing that has not changed between all my styles is the eye shape and distance from each other.

I think the Inkscape help thread is made for such questions...

Or can you ask such questions here? If no, you are allowed to punch me, if yes, then please answer me this, for I haven't found a Illustrator Help Thread:

1. Is there a way to connect two anchor points without them being endpoints and without the use of the "compound shape" function?
2. Is there a way to edit part of a path without editing all of it? :smallsigh:My problem is that I want to make part of an object without the border/outline, and accomplishing it by making two separated objects looks very bad sometimes and is a very huge pain in the behind, especially if you make Viera ears in the style I use (other versions of which others (like MethosHazara and EmeraldPhoenix) used before me)
:frown:My time is very limited, and these things would allow me to do more in the small amount of time I have.

How many other snipers could there possibly be?! :smallannoyed:

Besides, assuming they're all pointing at the same target, everybody would notice the clown sniper but fail to notice the REGULAR sniper on a different building. But then again, that's assuming they're all on the same team. I can't imagine why any other snipers would be there, though.

And, even if the enemy was defending the snipee with other snipers for some reasons, the clown could just disguise the gun as a water squirting flower or some other clowning aid of some sort. Then nobody would see that he's a sniper.

@Clown sniper: True, it wouldn't be expected, which would make it a good way to infiltrate a building, but then there's the problem of actually hiding the gun, and staying hidden when you actually get to the top of the building. Not even from other snipers, really. people could see a puffy red hairdo a mile away

Yeah, and so if you could see the puffy red hair do, you wouldn't be expecting a bullet to be coming from it!

Sadly it would not fit with BRC's "Grimdark" comic setting. Plus, a clown on top of a skyscraper, with a sniper rifle disguised as a baloon animal/sword/gun (because a sniper rifle disguised as a squirting flower will not have accuracy, or even a sniper scope....except if it was a damn Predator style shoulder cannon disguised as a squirting flower) will still be "Obvious assassin is obvious" if shots are fired.

Because that would be silly.

Everybody knows that a properly trained Clown Assassin dosn't snipe people from rooftops, he sidles up all friendly like, makes you a balloon animal, and while he hands it to you, pricks you with a needle that you hardly feel. I think the picture requires a little more explanation then that, but you know, it looks like it would be a good comic premise.

Teenagers in a fantasy universe, role-playing as business men, finally see their world as the wonderous place that it is and go on an epic quest, originally to have fun, but later to rescue one of their fellow role-playing friends, which leads them on an epic jorney of fun, explosions, true love with hot elf chicks, self discovery, friendship, misunderstandings, and plenty of Chekhov's guns about their role-playing history to use skills and values of the mundane world, to make one of the greatest lighthearted feel-good fun-for-the-whole-family laugh-out-loud comedies of the year!

Yeah, I pulled most of that out of my ass. A picture is not enough to make a comic about.

However, did YOU draw that? Because no matter how crummy the story is, that art will save it if you used it in your comic.

Still working out all the kinks, plot/story wise. But for the most part it's your standard "into the rabbit hole" deal. In a nutshell, protagonist A finds his way from World A to World B where he encounters protagonist B and the shadowy organization B works with. I'd give you actual details, but then I'd be giving away the plot. :smalltongue:

I come asking for people's honest opinions on an idea for a fancomic I have had while doodling in class. At first it was just for giggles, although recently I have actually considered it as a possible fancomic. I realize that I'm going to run out of comics to review on The Q's Comic Review relatively soon, and while I will not stop reviewing comics when permission is given to me, I probably will not be able to do it on a weekly basis much longer. And so, I need help to decide whether to start a new fancomic when The Q's Comic Review runs out of comics or just double my other comic's, Smooth Moves, update schedule.

Anyway, here's the description.
Okay, this may come as a shock to a lot of people on these forums, but I really like Mario games. I love Mario from his bright, red, iconic, monogrammed hat to his shiny, brown, snappy, turtle-stomping shoes. What I particularly like about the various Mario games, I realize, is that with the countless videogames of many, MANY different gameplay styles, A LOT has been put into the mythos and yet a lot of it is quite open to interpretation.

This fancomic is an alternate imagining of Super Mario 64 with massive inspiration taken from the webseries There Will Be Brawl (http://therewillbebrawl.com/episodes.php). Basically, it's Super Mario 64 but darker and edgier.

But it's not just that. It will also not just be Super Mario 64, but also contain continuity references from a hell of a lot of the other games. It will contain elements, plot-point references, characters and/or cameo gags from Sunshine, Galaxy, the Paper Mario RPG series, the Mario & Luigi RPG series, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, Super Mario World, The Donkey Kong series, The Wario Land series, Dr. Mario, the Mario Party series, the Mario Kart series, New Super Mario Bros./Wii, Yoshi's Island, The Super Smash Bros. series and even Hotel Mario and Mario Is Missing. Even the movie will be referenced. So basically this is a huge celebration of the Mario games, attempted to make sense and put it into some kind of mass continuity.

Mario will have to encounter many of his past, forgotten foes who have shown up to haunt him (sometimes quite literally), such as Wario, Donkey Kong, Wart, Kamek, Smithy, Fawful, King Boo, and a few others.

Here's the title and title page.
http://i46.tinypic.com/2568kl0.png

Here's the first comic.
http://i48.tinypic.com/b6akcl.png
http://i50.tinypic.com/13zs6q1.png
http://i45.tinypic.com/28vdnpz.png

SO basically, I'm asking your opinions on whether or not I should go through with this when The Q's Comic Review runs it's course. And, if anybody has any sugestions, with the artstyle or many with a character or a reference they want to see, I'm all ears.

A question, I'm working on the next Rebellion|Revolution, and I'm trying to get a point across visually, but I'm not sure it's working.
Here's the image in question. For reference, the entire comic up to that point has NOT been in the trenches, but in a city (Red walls=bricks)
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w27/bloddyredcommie/Test2.png
Here's What I'm trying to do

The guy on the left is readying his weapon (The type of gun is called a Stregson), which makes a distinctive Clack Clack noise when the safety is taken off (The fact that it's the safety is less important than the fact that the gun makes a Clack-Clack noise).
The Riot Cop is a Veteran recognizing the sound, (that's supposed to be him in the background).

So, is that coming across, or does the image make absolutely no sense without the explanation. One of the things Q's review of Rob and Jack made me realize is that I can't assume people will read anything that isn't actually in the main comic, and I don't want anybody who dosn't know to look for my explanation to be totally confused by this.

...Well...That's good to know.

I personally thought the art was really good. Not great, but a good step forward. I wanted to try a more complicated art style to gradually get to some kind of amazing, super-realistic style.

It wasn't supposed to look exactly like the Mario characters, obviously. It was supposed to make them look more realistic, because I based a lot of the character's looks from real animals and objects (for example, the koopa takes heavy inspiration from real turtles). It was also supposed to look creepy and somewhat abstract, because I wanted that to be the mood of the setting.

But if people think it's bad then...I don't know what to do to fix that. Does everybody else agree with Cizak? :smallfrown:

*comes out of lurking* Yeah actually. The art you put together in that preview is not pleasant to look at. There are some huge proportions errors, as well as perspective issues, and everyone looks 2d I think. I'd say practice your drawing a bit more before trying to do something realistic, or even cartoony. Stick to your vector art for comics until then.

Emperor Ing
2010-02-20, 07:12 AM

O.o

But seriously, thanks for the comment. I think I might see what you're saying. I had shading in it originally, but I actually thought the art was good enough without it that cutting that corner to save time would be alright. I see now what I have to do...

People, I am not giving up this new art style. Even The Simpsons art was pretty bad at first, but with only a few subtle changes over the years it's become a masterpiece of both simplicity and detail. The only difference is besides the medium, purposes of writing, and the amount of success I'll have from it is that I'm look to get my subtle changes fixed before I actually start it.

So please, don't just say "it's bad", or "proportion errors". The whole reason I made the first comic in this experimental style so that you may pick individual panels and examples of art that I could change, and tell me how I would change it so I can to give it a more pleasent and polished look. I think I see a few things myself I will change, but so far the only good piece of advice is "change goomba's legs to a more natural look". That's a good start, I think. But I need more. You don't give up trying to play a totally new intrument just because you failed your first playing test, and I too shall not give up yet until it is deemed readable.

Cizak
2010-02-20, 08:50 AM
M'kay, let's see what I can do here...

1) As said, change the legs of the goomba. If you can't see how it's unnatural, try bending your own legs that way. I asure you, you'll have to go to the hospital afetrwards.

2) Give peach some arms!

3) Bowser and the Koopa Troopas have to longs noses. Just google-search "Bowser" and "Koopa troopa", and you can see that their noses/mouths are more round and short. I know you said you wanted to draw them more realistic, but if you search for "turtle", you won't find any images of turtles with that long noses. At least I don't find any...

4) Make your Hammer-Bro actually hold his hammer. It loks like it's taped to his palm or something.

5) I don't know wheter the second Toad is supposed to be dead, or alive with a lost foot. But either way, his expression doesn't fit either one. He just looks a little annoyed. If he's dead, well... make him looks more dead (sorry :smallsigh:) and if he's alive with just one foot, make him scream in agony or something. If you loose one foot, you won't be just annoyed.

Emperor Ing

Well first off, the 2nd toad looks like he's asleep with a lost foot, sitting up.

Then the goomba's reverse-jointed legs look...unreal. I recommend you give 'em normal looking legs. If you must have unusual legs, I recommend a miniature version of the legs Bungie uses for Elites. Picture. (http://www.xboxgazette.com/i/pic_halo_elite.jpg) If you want a clearer example here's the template I use for <Guess which character>'s legs. Picture. (http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll246/EmperorIng/legtemplate.png)

The Koopa's faces look...retarted. One thing I know from playing Mario games is that they tend to be...taller than how you drew them, with rounder ends, usually a hookbill. Picture. (http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Games/Images/Koopa-Troopa.JPG) You probably won't draw eyes like that, so I recommend you do something similar to this. (http://www.jeffsresorts.com/images/TurtleFace.jpg)

As for Peach, either her arms are absurdly short or Bowser had too much time and rope on his hands. :smalleek:

And Bowser himself, as per the Koopas, overall, i'd say you might wanna simplify your art style just a little bit and work from there. Maybe blunt up his face a little bit.

Green-Shirt Q

3)Just google-search "Bowser" and "Koopa troopa", and you can see that their noses/mouths are more round and short.

Better, but not by much.

The thing about an Ultra-Realistic style is that, if you can pull it off, it looks amazing, but if not, it looks hideous. The important thing about an Art Style, especially a cartoon, is that everything looks consistent, so the viewer can easily look at an image and know what it is, that's why so many things are stylized.

It dosn't help that, not only are you trying to draw an ultrarealistic style with basic computer drawing programs, but you are trying to convert highly Stylized images of things that don't have a realistic counterpart.
Take, for example, the Goomba
http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/images/4/4a/NSMBW_Goomba.jpg
It looks fine Stylized, because that's the way it's meant to be. You're trying to take an image of something totally ridiculous and make it look realistic, and it comes off as creepy.

I'm sorry Q, but I don't think this project is going to work out. If you want to see if you can use a realistic style, pick different source material.

I highly you get your hands on some SNES sprites (http://tsgk.captainn.net/index.php?p=showgame&t=sy&sy=8&ga=346) and go to town with those. (I also recommend you double the size of the sprites too)

Nah. I'm only doing it for the idea, and partially to get the art style right, but I think I'm going to give this a try anyway, either by doing the same art style (which I think is pretty good) or maybe with my regular art style.

And yeah, the goomba does have a counterpart. The mushroom. It's a little distant, but I think you should see the resemblence.

Unfortunetly, for me, sprites isn't really an option anymore. I could have used them when I was working on Super Smash B-List, but after a computer upgrade it would always blur the sprites.

And, (to everyone) I'm trying to be creepy. So if that's the only thing stopping you, then I guess you should read it anyway.

I know Goombas are Mushrooms. But They're mushrooms that walk around on little circular legs. There is no counterpart for Mushrooms having legs. You depicted your Goombas with humanoid legs, which looks very very odd. In artwork, they're depicted as having little spheres they walk around on, which works great as a cartoon, but doesn't translate well into ultrarealism.
Go for Realism by all means, but don't sacrifice aesthetics entierly.
If I can be brutally honest, the art right now is kind of ugly. I'd recommend thickening up exterior lines, using the thin lines for interior detail. Thicker outlines tends to make your characters seem more solid and real, right now your Koopas look like pieces of paper held up in front of the background.

That's the spirit =D.

For learning how to draw more realistic proportions, though - it's usually not a good idea to dive straight in and draw from the top-down if you don't have prior experience in the style. Instead, I would recommend planning out your scene using light-colored pencils and draw people/figures as shapes and lines, like this:

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6531/stickoutline1.gif

Then polish it gradually and outline the basic figure, like this:

http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/2639/stickoutline2.gif

Doing this type of layer-by-layer drawing can be slow if you're using a mouse, but it's really helpful when you want to fix anatomy or draw complex views/poses.

I recommend you REALLY polish up the art style over a certain period of time before you start the comic, say, do some practice drawings of all the characters until you have something that is both somewhat realistic and staying somewhat true to the cartooney Mario style that doesn't make your eye bleed. Well, the scales on his belly ARE present in official Bowser (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j69/FFConnection/Bowser.png).

And for some reason, I have a funny feeling that no matter how hard I'll try, I'll never be able to please you people. In which case I'll simply go with the art that makes me happy. 1) That looks a LOT better. A few details are off, but the only thing that stands out is Bowser's belly again and bowser's lips.
For Bowser's Belly I recommend you just use an ellipse and make several curved lines on it.
For the lips just smooth out the ripples in the middle up on the top.
2) We're trying to help you, if you notice you're progressively getting better. Unfortunately you'll only get better at a snail's pace if we just lied to you and say "It's k " and it'd be bad for us because blood on the keyboard from your eyes is not fun. :smalltongue:

1) No, that was BRC trying to convince you to give up. All I said was "Sprite Comic?"
2) Time to get nitpickey.

-For joints, I like to use lines to signify bending and separation of the leg segments, otherwise the whole appendage looks like one solid object. If you have to, make different appendages for different bends. Remember this? (http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll246/EmperorIng/legtemplate.png) note the line at the knee between the thigh and lower leg. Also note how each toe is separated by a line. That probably won't be immediately useful, but it could eventually.
-The Princess needs to be tied to something. Let's be honest, you can't just tie someone's arms behind their back, gag 'em, and expect them to stay in one place for like...hours. :smalltongue:
Here, I would think about what would keep her in place. Tying her legs up is reasonable because it can be concealed by her skirt (Hence the crying) and/or being off-panel, but even then she can just hop around. I would recommend tying her to a bedpost. Because of her royalty status, in all likelihood she would have one of those beds with the canopy covers, hence tall poles in which to be tied to.
-Gag needs to go further into the mouth a little bit.
-Lengthen Bowser's nose slightly
-Remember, we should NOT be able to see any orange scales on Bowser's torso.
-Lenthen Bowser's arms a bit, cuz otherwise he's a T-Rex in a shell. :smalltongue:

Just a few minor to moderate adjustments.
3) I know you make good comics and i'd like to see where you go with it, we're just trying to optimize your art to be the best at which you can make it.

VERY nice improvement actually. The Goomba looks like it could feasibly exist, you're characters look three dimensional and solid. It's still abit rough, but that's expected when you're using a new art style. Once you've gotten more comfortable with/better at the style, don't be afraid to rebuild your templates using your new experience*

*This is something I intend to do eventually. The problem with Vector comics is that your main characters are usually the first ones you design, when you are the least experienced. As you do the comic more, you get better at the style, and so the new characters you design look better than the old ones, but since you're just copy-pasting your templates your old characters stay as they were when you first designed them.

Huge improvements. It come up as pretty good right now.

The only trouble (and it's frankly minor) I can see left, is with Peach.
The general proportions are here, but the upper body seems a bit off in my opinion. Particulary neck who look a little too thin and has a weird angle with the head it's supposed to support.
The perspective in this pannel look a bit odd between peach's body and the bed she's tied too (look at the shoulders line)

Browser on the other hand looks perfect and so does his koopas croonies.

Small nitpicks
Mario should be in the foreground in the title page. Right now he's a little hard to see.
I'm also not a fan of the white lines used to give details on Mario's clothes.
The background on pannels 1 and 3 look nice and detailed, wich is verry good. But sadly in contrast the monochrome backgrounds in pannel 2 and 4 appears pretty bland

If you're going to go for more realistic-ish, I suggest you really consider trying shading more. Sure it takes a lot of time to do but it gives oh so much better results.

...Well...That's good to know.

I personally thought the art was really good. Not great, but a good step forward. I wanted to try a more complicated art style to gradually get to some kind of amazing, super-realistic style.

Can I just make a comment on this here.

Q, your style was not very good. It was very DETAILED, but Detail does not necessarily equal quality or realism.
Now, the good news is that you did everything right. You imagined the style, you worked on it until you were satisfied with it, then you looked for input. You received nothing but criticism, and rather than trying to defend your artwork, you accepted the advice and made use of it. I'd be lying if I said I loved the final product, but my reaction is now more along the lines of "Meh, not my cup of tea" then "That's hideous". However, you are doing something I'm not that I wish I was, you are actively seeking to improve your art by intentionally adopting an unfamiliar and difficult style. So while I don't much like the art now, I have a feeling that in a year or so my art will still be more or less the same, while yours will be amazing because I've been copy pasting whenever possible, while you are actively pushing your boundaries.
So yeah, while I don't know if I'm going to be reading your next comic, I wish you luck with it, and have a feeling that great things are going to come of it.

Also, this (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=RB-PLUMBERS&Category_Code=RB) is supposed to be a joke, but it's relevant to your interests.

I have an idea for a comic. It involves a group of adventurers, that are oppisites ( no suprise there) the party includes

-Laetak, the elven druid. She is a pacifist and is humorous. She wishs to keep the amount of people she has to kill as close to zero as she can.

-Led stone rage, dwarf barbarian. As Lae's oppisite, he feels the primal forces ans wishes to destroy anyone who might as well farts in his general direction. He is a no nonsesne kind of guy.

-Gausra Baenafin, drow paladin of Maerro the god of justice and retribution. He is true to his alignment of lawful good without becoming lawful stupid. He wishes to help those wo cant and will sometimes give his reward to his fellow party member, being the complete opposite of greedy.

Scoss, chaotic nuetral halfing rogue. Again total opposite of gaus. He puts money and xp infront of everything else. If the druid has to lose a couple hitpoints for him to get 1 more gold coin, he will take thatgold coin. ( what the druid can heal her ownself)

their main enemy is the tielfing cleric of Skamos, god of destruction and daemons. She wishes to turn the continent into a burning mass of land, inhabinated by daemons and the servants of said daemon. She residesin an underground temple filled with golems, traps, and other things.

Soo...I've had an idea for a comic bouncing around in my head for a while, and I was wondering if I could get some feedback on it. This is all bare-bones and preliminary, of course.

Essentially it's a superhero story that takes place about 10 years after a legion of supervillains defeated the setting's primary superheroes. Ever since they've ruled the world, which, of course, is bad news for most the world's denizens.

The story follows a man by the name of Dewey Steele, whose superhero friend was murdered by the new regime as they took control. Nowadays he works as a janitor for a paper company in a city (which shall be named...when I think of a name). He witnesses the murder of a supervillain, the Red Swordsman, who works for the world government, by a group of agents also working for the administration that suspect (falsely) that he has rebel ties.

After the agents depart, Dewey touches the Red Swordsman's (superpowered and sapient) sword, which telepathically bonds to him and grants him powers. After trying and failing to get rid of the sword and saving a defenseless man from a group of the regime's soldiers, he eventually resolves to fight against the supervillainous government as the Crimson Avenger.

Concept art for the main character (in costume):

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/cavenger.png

Simple little banner:

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/SinisterPenguin/justicebanner.png

Also...I've got two ways to start the story, as I see it. I can either begin with Dewey captured, being tortured and interrogated by the regime's agents. Most of the story (until it catches up to the present, anyway) would be Dewey telling his captors everything that happened up to this point. I like this method because it allows me to provide easy narration, and because it would be the more interesting and exciting way to begin. The biggest downside is that it forces me to remain in the viewpoint of one character (Dewey) at all times; I'll never be able to cut to the villains planning their evil...plans, or anything like that.

The other method is merely to start from the very beginning, without the restraints of the "flashback" thing. Any suggestions?

...Wow, this post turned out a lot longer than I expected.

I like the idea, and I would almost definitely follow it.
How dystopian is the government?

Also, I'd suggest maybe changing his name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_Avenger). Yeah, making up serious original superhero/villain names is hard.

Szilard

You could do it Lost style with multiple people having flashbacks.

How dystopian is the government?

Fairly dystopian. Society still functions, more or less, but it's not exactly pleasant for most of those involved. Citizens are opressed pretty severely, and anyone who develops superpowers is either forced to work for the regime or executed. Seeing as most of these supervillains don't exactly have much to work toward any more, they concern themselves with doing horrible things to people for fun and trying to elevate themselves in the government itself. And crushing any revolutionary movements.

Also, I'd suggest maybe changing his name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_Avenger). Yeah, making up serious original superhero/villain names is hard.

Curses. I suppose I could just change it to the Red Avenger, but that sounds less...poetic. Ah well, I'll think of something.

I really like the sound of this comic (even though I don't completely understand it from the description. Then again, I am a thicko. :smalltongue:) and I particularly love how somebody has taken into account the backstory with flashbacks like me before jumping into a story. It makes for good setting up of great events and, when done REALLY well, can really mess with the audience and give a great twist to the story.

I can't see any reason why you can do both. Have the entire thing be the main character's flashback but still, with perhaps a subtle change in the painting of the fourth wall (if you understand what I'm trying to say), you can flash back to somebody else's flashback completely different from the main flashback. :smallwink:

The Unforgiving (not quite what you said, but was inspired by that name on your list) was another nickname I was considering because it made sense with a certain plot-point I am planning. I may even end up using this anyway, and just use multiple nicknames.

However, for the main nickname, The Unforgiving or Unforgiveable isn't really...well, it just doesn't sound right to me as the main nickname.

Looks good, though you might want to move his feet a bit to the left, it looks a bit like he should fall backward.

Otherwise it looks nice

@Q: Two minor nitpicks.
Mario's moustache looks, a bit weird to me. I think it would look more like Mario's if it was one piece and bigger on the middle and smaller at the ends instead of two pieces that makes it looks like some pieces of black paper

Then there's he Goomba, it looks like it looks in the direction it's walking but it's head is for some reason turned toward the reader instead. Given that the head is it's entire upper body that makes it look kinda funny.

But otherwise it's really really good

Can someone help me write a plot for a Psion, a Monk, a Druid and a Wizard?

plotzplz:smallsmile:

There are four best friends and DnD nerds that dress up like a Psion, a Monk a Druid and a Wizard from their favourite fantasy comic book and go to a comic book convention in New York, where the author of their favourite comic book is said to arrive.

While they despretely wait in line to get his autograph, another rabbid fan comes in and kidnaps the author of the comic book before the four friends can get an autograph! The four friends chase the rabbid fan down through the crazy, dangerous streets of New York, while forgetting to change back into real life clothing, to rescue their beloved author.

While chasing the rabbid fan down, the fact that they're in fantasy clothing causes them a whole bunch of problems for them. The police try to track down the Monk because, in the costume, he looks very similar to a cult leader who recently escaped from prison. The Wizard gets mistaken for a girl because of his "dress" by the local ladykiller, and the Stud realizing his mistake sends him into a rage to kill the friends. The Druid is constantly asked by hippies to join their protest, even though he doesn't have the time.

This leads to a great, original adventure that could produce NEW jokes, NEW characters (instead of just "the lawful good leader", "the sneaky rogue" etc.), and a NEW adventure with thrilling action, humour and absolutely NOTHING about an adventuring group doing random quests for money!

But seriously. You should come up with a plot before you come up with characters. Feel free to use the one I suggested, but something tells me you won't.

Thank you. It has been a story I've had rolling around in my head for a while, actually. Not quite the way I said it (I replaced the main heroes with the ones asked for) but the principle is the same.

I may end up writing this story down the road if nobody ends up using it. Not soon, since I got Smooth Moves, The Q's Comic Review, and the Upcoming Peach's Castle: A Serious Fancomic On Serious GitP I'm working on, but maybe in the not incredibly too distant future.

As you can see, this is a different style than the other comic. This is just to differentiate these "Goomba Journal" comics from the rest of the comics. These will tell the story of a young Goomba kid many, many years before this comic, or any of the Mario games, take place. They may not seem like they have anything to do with anything, but they will lead up to a huge twist later on in the story. A twist everybody will probably figure out way quicker then you're supposed to, but still...

Okay, I have a problem. I was working on the kitty comic (Which shall be codenamed "Flow of Life") and I need to draw a female cat. Any idea how to do this?

Here's the template for a male cat.

Any idea how? And no, I am not going to add mammaries.

That's exactly the reason why I'm NOT giving her any. :smalltongue:

Why don't you make the hat a little bigger and pull it down more. It looks like it's perching on top of his head right now.

A'ight. I took your advice and I rounded the sides slightly.

Here's the full character design:

Alright, eyelashes and a curvier body.

Also they should be slightly shorter. I think maybe slightly longer arms/legs/tail.

Thoughts?
It's a very drastic shift that says more "Costume Change" than "Art Upgrade". Not that that's a bad thing, it just means she changed from her tattered black clothing to tattered red clothing.

Also, as somebody who uses filled in sleeves/arms and legs (Well, for clothing anyway), let me warn you, it's alot trickier to work with than lines. Not saying you shouldn't use it, just warning you that it can be time consuming to get it right, especially when you are showing somebody reaching across their body, or crossing their arms, or holding something in two hands.

Okay, here's what I got for bodies.

The left two are kittehs, the right two are fully mature cats.

Anything I should change?

You could just use the male template, but add a little red bow on the heads of the females.

It works for Zero Punctuation.

Ok so right now i'm gauging interest in an idea for a Metroid Sprite Comic i'm gonna possibly be doing after WTwU (assuming I ever get done :smalltongue:). I don't have the details for a plotline but I plan on it to be much less serious than WTwU with way fewer overpowered characters and more humor driven.

So, thoughts?

So there will be two Nintento inspired comics around here? :smallannoyed::smalltongue:

Whatever, I'm looking forward to it. Anything you can say about it at this point? Plot? Characters?

Also, what do you think of my most recent art update with Peach's Castle? Anything else I can improve?

How 'bout taking place right after Fusion (Which is apparently at the end of the story)? Samus is running away from the GF, and lands on the ruins of an ancient civilization. (Maybe Chozo. Did they ever get to space?) There, stuff happensm and hilarity ensues.

Of course, someone already did the Metroid Fancomic thing, and it was pretty damn good. And it was scarily similar to Prime 3: Corruption. (It was started before they mentioned any information of it.)

I would like to initiate a contest for my comic, Idiosyncrasy. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123238) Anyone who can develop a unique style uniform for a black op covert of the trogodytes shall recieve a cameo appearance in my comic in the future. They will, however, need to pm the character they want the cameo appearance with.

Contest will last until I need to use the uniform Black op Trogodytes. (So you guys have to guess when. Pretty much, when it seems that they are getting closer, that's when you guys need to step up.)

Hope to see you all compete.:smallwink:

This is a little concept/pre-plan for Viola, a character in an upcoming fancomic. I intended her to be a young child - probably around 11 or so - with a bit of a bleaker outlook on life due to circumstances. The only thing I'm having trouble with is the "child" part, so I'm looking for ideas on how I could make the character, well, seem a bit less mature and more innocent, without making her too much so (little edits, adjustments in proportions, etc. I'm okay with going off of OotS style a little).

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/6849/violad.png

There's also something that I dislike about the hair. I wanted to make a child-friendly hairstyle without relying on pigtails or side ponytails, although the result ended up looking a bit strange. I'm trying a few ways to fix it without changing hairstyles entirely at the moment, though I'm not getting very good results.

EDIT: Concept Art (http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9343/violaconcept.gif) of Viola. As you can see, the avatar looks really off, and that's been bugging me for quite a while - not really sure how to fix the problem.

To make a child, scale the body down about 2/3, but leave the head the same size. Following that, group the whole thing (head included) and scale it down once more (look at Haley in This Comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0681.html))

As for hairstyles, maybe go for braids?

You should ask yourself what make us see the difference between a child and an adult. I think they are, in the particular case of OotS-style: Size; the head proportion; the feet proportion and lack of muscles and breast.

By the way... Her shoes are a little blur

1) Yes, there will be. But don't expect it anytime soon, say, for at least a year. :smalltongue:
2) Not really, i'm debating between several other characters from elseware in the series, like Dark Samus and Armstrong Houston, all I know is that Samus won't be the main character. I'll probably just do what I do with WTwU's plot and add characters on a basis of necessity. :smalltongue:
3) *looks for it* Ah there it is. Yes, looks pretty good. I kinda liked the way the goombas looked before but their crab-walking ingame definitely leaves little room for realism. The koopas still look awkward, I recommend increasing the curvature on their beaks/snouts/mouths/whatever.

Other than that looking good. :smallcool:
