=============================

This thread is for suggesting ideas for future weeks and discussing past ones. To actually request avatars, show off your avatars, or admire the avatars of others for the upcoming weeks, please see links to the individual week threads above.

There is no approval process. Discussion happens here until someone feels like starting a new thread. If you start an Avatar Theme Week, please link it in this thread so I can add it to the archives.

Important: If you don't like a theme week under discussion, then either try to drum up support for a different theme, or don't participate. That's all. Please refrain from negative comments. Saying 'I'm not interested and wouldn't participate' is fine. Saying 'This choice sucks because...' and doing it in multiple posts is not.

Suggestion: Moderator/Admin Week.

We all dress up our avatars as the various mods/admins of GitP, including those that are no longer moderating. A tribute to their hardwork policing the forums.

We also act super-special-extra nice or something.

The genre themes I think will generally make the most reasonable weeks. Some fun stuff in the list. Should we come up with a voting system?

How about before we start voting on weeks or suggesting new weeks, we discuss these two questions:

1. What makes a good avatar theme week?

2. What are your two or three favourite theme weeks of the past?

My answers

1. - Something that is widely known. ex: 'Star Wars' theme would be better than 'Fifth Element'
- Something that can adapts well to avatar cosplay. It's more fun if we recognize each other's signature avatars dressed up for the week.
- Easily recognizable. Lord of the Rings week might end up looking too much like 'generic fantasy adventurers' to work well.

2. My absolute favourite was xkcd week. Also, I liked devil and angels week and, though it wasn't an official theme week, I enjoyed when everyone did masquerade ball avatars for the playground prom.

1.) It has to be something that has enough characters in for there not to be three or four repeats (excluding when people share a favorite character), and it should be something with a broad choice that people will know.

2.) I've enjoyed them all so far! ...I can't remember which where Theme Weeks, and which I got at random, though...

Idea for Theme Selection :

The current list of suggestions should go, so that they can be refilled new every month... So, you have the Broad Categories (Action/Media/Etc), which get voted on. Then everyone who can think of a theme that fits can suggest it. Roll on a Random Number Generator, presto. Impartial Selection of a random week.

We don't want every week or every other week to be a theme week, though. Avatarists will be overworked, and one wants to see a poster's normal avatar enough to be able to recognize the cleverness of the theme costume.

happyturtle

Nope. Not every week, or every other week. It will only be every six weeks, as voted previously. So after genderbender week, there won't be another one until the end of March.

I don't think there's anything wrong with at least trying to have a bit of organisation with this.

1. Pretty much what everyone else has said: reasonably easy to come up with ideas and apply those ideas to avatars, broad enough to prevent too much overlap, and popular enough to appeal to most people.

2. Checking my avatars...
Hmmm. Might be Halloween.

Question, why's VGC listed as a potential week when Team Fortress, Sonic and Legend of Zelda are listed as "too narrow"? VGC has about 5 unique characters. Not to mention if you're talking about notability LoZ is only slightly less well known than Mario, as is Sonic (in fact considering that he was basically the mascot of the rival company back in the day...) and TF2 is one of the most popular MOFPSs.

Not everyone is a big fan of each game. As many characters as there are, most people would be one of a select few (especially for TF2). LoZ has a lot of options, yes, but I can only wonder how many people actually know enough about the game for it to be accessible to everybody.

General themes are usually better than specific themes since more people can really feel part of the experience rather than just another participant.

Or I could be completely wrong.

I think that, if we get this organisational thing going properly, the weeks should get more spaced out - aiming at every 6 weeks an' all. The 40k thing was brought on by the one-off event of the forum reaching 40000 members, and just got squeezed in between the "official" ON FIRE! and Gender-bending weeks.

If you leave 6 weeks between the avatar themes weeks, you'll only have time to do 8-9 theme weeks in a year. It might be good to make a list of the "must have" weeks, like Gender Bend and Inner animal week.

Lets see... Holiday ones, obviously:
Christmas
New Year
Birthdays (well, I do :smalltongue:)
Easter
Halloween
Local.
Personally, I'd probably keep these ones separate to the "theme week" lists. Possible exception being Halloween, as that's all about dressing up anyway.

Gender-bend is.
Inner Animal seems to be (though, alas, it tends to be sub-par for me)
Cat-muffins nearly are
Mistaken Identity's been done a few times.

You know what? I wouldn't worry too much about these, really. If we feel like repeating one we did another year, we can resubmit it. Or if we're a bit stuck on new ones, or whatever.

Out of those, I'd say gender-bender, cat-muffin and Halloween are definite annuals. Winter Holidays is also another annual (I put New Year into this category as well). I don't know about mistaken identity week, but it's happened twice as far as I can recall...

The rest, adding in days of remembrance, are usually just a choice of the playgrounders themselves rather than official avatar weeks. Easter is considered by many people I know to be a religious holiday, so I wouldn't count that one personally, but the playground might have a different opinion on the matter. I don't remember it being one...

I made sure Pirate week is in the week of ITLAPD and Winter Holiday week is in December and halloween is in halloween.

Of couse these are estimates, as the week numbers shift every year and there is no reason to stick exactly to the 6 weeks between them. So they could be a week earlier or later.

Week 4:
Week 10: The Annual Gender Bender Week
Week 17:-

Week 31:

Well if that's the case then VG cats has all the same problems. Which was my main point. I would still argue that LoZ is at least as well known as the FF series (and even longer running for that matter).

Because I don't know what VGC is so didn't know how to categorize it? If someone wants to go through all or part of the list and make comments on suitability, please do so.

The list was very much an attempt on my part to be over inclusive, which is why the items were moved to a sub-list rather than dropped off completely.

Just for the record, VG cats is a webcomic known for it's good quality artwork, sporadic updates and occasionally taking refuge in vulgarity.

Since I'm bored (I, by no means, consider myself the final word on this);

Action based themes:

Party
Musical
Toga Party
Music/Music video
Lost a fight week
Drunken avatar week

Creature themes:
Every avatar can potentially be switched to a given creature, (apart from the odd case of the creature in question already being in use for an avvie) so I'll give this a blanket pass.

Genre themes:
Same as Creatures

Human based themes:

Lolita - The implications/origins might bother some. It has the issue of basically being GB week with an age down (taken as the character type), but it could include the spear counterpart or just focus on the fasion style I guess.
Hobo - No issues here
Standard OotS - A little dull perhaps, and exclusive to those who already use standard avvies. Keep it in reserve.
Old smelly person week - Interesting, if narrow.
Crazy Person week As old person week

Media themes:

Joss Whedon Week Fairly broad, plenty of characters
Non-oots Webcomic It'll work
8-bit week This could be fun. It'll give sprite artists a chance to shine as avatarists (depending one one's interpretation)
Nintendo week Broad enough. Could be expanded to a general "classic video games" week.

Final Fantasy Week Plenty of characters, could stand on its own or be merged into "classic games" week
Mario Week Could be merged into Nintendo week, but just about broad enough on its own

Lord of the Rings week Enough characters. Well known series.
Lego week Lego versions of any avatar are easy. Well known toy/serious buisness.
Pixar week Pretty much everyone's seen at least on Pixar movie.
Anime Might be a bit exclusive to non-anime fans, but most people have seen at least one anime series. Those who actively dislike it can get over themselves.
Discworld A little more obscure than Harry Potter, but fine. No shortage of characters
Harry Potter Fairly well known. Enough characters
Sesame Street/Muppets Week Most people below a certain age in many countries should be familiar with it.

Possibly too narrow:
Team Fortress week You could think of the character classes as a theme. In any case there's plenty of characters to consider apart from them. Maybe a more generic "Online FPS" or "MMO" week is in order?
Sonic Week Fair amount of characters, but only a few are popular. Maybe expand this into a "SEGA" week? Perhaps merge it with Nintendo Week and have a "classic video games" week
Legend of Zelda week Quite a few characters, but it might be best to merge it into Nintendo week anyway, given it's basically their second "Killer App" series.
VG Cats Not too many characters (2 main characters and enough supporting characters to count on one hand). Limited source material. Good webcomic, but best merged into "non-OotS webcomics" week in my opinion at least.

Random silly themes:

LOLoots I'm not to sure what this implies
Pie Who can say no to pie. :smallwink:
Invisible
Inanimate object week
Household Furniture Merge into the above. They're rather similar
Elements Chinese or Western? :smalltongue:
No avatar A little dull, perhaps...
Jigsaw Week (All the avatars of participants are arranged into a collage, then it's diced up as a puzzle, and avatars are sent back to the participants?) Sounds quite fun, although it'll need some organisation.
Sunglasses week Could be good as a simple week for everyone to take part in (just draw sunglasses on your avvie and away you go)
Nationality week No objections here.
Homebrew week (Everyone dig up a homebrew and get it illustrated. And then all the authors have pictures to go with their homebrews.) Might be a problem for those without any homebrews to their name. Good utility for those that do though. Consider a convincing for those who don't do any homebrew (assign random MM monsters, allow homebrewers to let other's "adopt" their work for the week?)

It's not that they aren't notable, but moreso that they're really narrow. There aren't a lot of options to choose from. Now, a Nintendo week is probably better. But a specific game or game series just won't work, because not everyone has played the game.

Not everyone has owned a Nintendo (some favoured Atari, SEGA, and more recently, some favoured Sony or MS).

Clone Week was rather narrow if I recall correctly.:smalltongue:

Sonic, tails, Robotnic...

Even if there are 15 more character's that I've missed it's still too narrrow. There's a whole forum to cater for and there's more than 20 of us.

Warhammer week too? I can't tell who's even participating because it's not something I'd recognise.

Like most longer running video games series, it has an entire expanded universe worth of characters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_hedgehog_characters

I'd like to add that I'm not particularly in favour of or against a SotH week, I'm simply ensuring all the bases are covered.

Also, a lot of the Sonic characters would be appropriate if there were an inner animal week. All but Robotnic and his robots really. And the Chao. They aren't exactly animals.

Warhammer week too? I can't tell who's even participating because it's not something I'd recognise.

Be honest, tho, how many people participate in each theme week? Now, gender-bender, that's a famous one, a lot of us do that one. But there's tons of people who spend all their time outside FB who never even know a theme week is going on, nor do they (as far as I can tell) particularly care. I think it would be interesting to see how many people participate. Not that I'm saying theme weeks are bad or should be canceled due to low participation, just that it's not the whole forum.

To reiterate: How wide should a theme be to cover all potential participants? I mean, I doubt there are more than 1000 people who ever participate in any theme week (to be honest this is conservative and I would more likely estimate less than 500, potentially excluding bigger weeks like Gender Bender which are of course broad enough by simple fact). We really don't need to cover too many people. It need only be something some people are interested in. If we held the holidays up to the "narrowness standard," we wouldn't be able to do any of them. Cuz let's face it, it's hard to find 100 different winter holiday tropes that look good.

Anyway, point is (trying this again it seems) that we shouldn't try too hard to cater to everyone, realize that not everyone participates to begin with, and there's really nothing wrong with "doubling up," especially if the avvies are clever.

However, this is the perfect time for discussions of 'How will we choose each theme week?'

Elly suggested a nomination period each time, then picking the nominated theme randomly.

I have two other suggestions for consideration/debate:

1. Nomination period - everyone nominates three themes, or can combine votes to give their favourite theme 2 or 3 nominations. Top nominations then have a voting period where everyone ranks them in order of preference.

2. If an avatarist is willing to make avatars for at least 3 other playgrounders for a given theme week, his or her vote for that theme counts double.

The idea behind these suggestions is to give theme weeks that are strongly wished for a bit of an edge, as well as making sure that there is avatarist support for the weeks that are chosen. Good idea? Bad idea?

The fashion style. Character archetype available at the user's option, like all theme weeks.

@Happyturtle: I think that while picking randomly would be the most impartial method of selection, it risks selecting a theme not many have their heart in. On the other hand, I worry that some very interesting weeks will be washed aside by more popular options. If there's a bipartite solution to all of this, I'll be darned if I know what it is.

Hmm, I hadn't really though as far ahead as being taken seriously, but as a rough draft, something along the lines of;

Group 1 "Community projects" -
Avatar themes related to activities elsewhere on the playground and/or co-operating with other playgrounders to make your avatar.

Jigsaw Week
Homebrew week
etc

Group 2 "Not as you know them"
Themes related to recharacterizing avatars and giving them different personalities or have them engage in a specific activity

Drunken avatar week
Sunglasses week
Hobo Week
Superhero/villain Week
etc

Group 3 "Cute n' Fluffy
Themes related to making avatars "cute"

Catgirl week
Teddy bear week
Penguin
etc

Group 4 "Dress up"
Themes relating to making dressing you avatar as a fictional character, or replacing them with one.

Wild West Week
Cyberpunk Week
Joss Whedon Week
Non-oots Webcomics
etc

Group 5 "Art Shift"
Redo you avatar (or have it redone) in a different style

8-bit week
Lolita
Cyberpunk Week
In SPACE!!!
etc

And so on. Maybe have 4 or 5 groups. Possibly less. It depends how many people we should expect to vote. I've just drafted a few groups to show what I mean above.

I dislike this. It would be entirely possible to group one really popular week and a bunch of "meh" ones. That wouldn't give any more chance to the less popular ones, it would simply give less chance to the more popular ones. If that makes sense? For instance, if we group Gender Bender, Famous Cookie Fans (no offense D-D), Names Beginning With Q, and Lox together, and then we group Inner Animal, Talking On Cell Phone, Pancake on Head, and Decapitated together, we know which week is going to win out of each group. It really only gives the illusion of choice at the second round. People will simply vote for the group with their favorite week, and then everyone will vote for that week. Because if Gender Bender's group gets picked, then, as far as I know, there aren't going to be any Inner Animal fans voting for Lox the next round.

Agreed, it wouldn't be in the spirit of the forum to have people count as more than others. Also, I don't think we should be voting, that never works well and always causes people to feel hurt or left out. Everybody should be able to announce a theme week if they want to.

The only way this is going to work is when we decide on a few annual great theme weeks. Weeks most people enjoy and which happen every year, like talk like a pirate day, Halloween and the gender bend stuff. We decide a date on those and the rest we leave undecided, free for anyone to create. The calendar would only be there so people would know when the anuals would be and qould't create them to early after each other.

Hmm, so people can know about Nintendo characters (and specifically know they are) without playing games, but can't know about the characters of well known games without having played them? :smallconfused:It's definitely more likely. For example, from Sonic, I know... Sonic and Tails. I'm vaguely aware of a female Sonic, too. But from Sega as a whole, I know Sonic, Tails... Huh. It turns out Sonic's the only Sega game I know. Checked the Wiki and everything.
Alright, better example. Nintendo. If we had a "[specific game] week", the only ones I'm really likely to be able to do properly is Mario, Mortal Kombat, Lufia and Donkey Kong because I've played those games. If we did, say, Legend of Zelda, I could be... Link. Or that fairy thing.
Most people would have played at least one Nintendo game. But not everyone has played the same Nintendo games. I think "Nintendo" (or whatever), or better yet "Video Games" would be better than specific games.

On the selection system: I think it'd be best to keep it as simple as possible, and it'd be brilliant if we can get a poll. My idea:
- A set of [5?] options are selected at random from the whole list. We then vote (preferably with a poll) for the one of those we each prefer.

I like Serp's idea of choosing the nominees at random then voting among them. But if we do that, then I think Elly's idea of refilling the idea list every time should be combined with it, or the list will just keep growing more and more massive.

Proposal:

1. People can suggest as many ideas as they like, including re-affirming ideas on the current list.
2. Ideas must be seconded by at least one other playgrounder to make it on the random number generator list.
3. Nomination stage ends on Feb 15, the start of GB week. The nominations to be polled are chosen by random.org or a dice rolling thread.
4. Voting goes on for a week, hopefully by poll, but with in thread counting otherwise.
5. By the end of GB week, the next theme week will be announced.

Some notes:

1. A theme only needs two nominations to reach the next round. You're welcome to continue listing your support for a theme even after this has happened, but it won't affects its chances of appeasing the Random Number Generator gods.

2. Not sure if the run of posts with three nominations is coincidence or if people think they can't nominate more. You can nominate as many as you want.

3. Gamerkid, since 'Star Wars' week is already on the list, I lumped 'Jedi/Sith' in with that. If you want it to be a separate nomination, let me know, and I'll change that.

OP is updated through this post. Please put nominations in bold so I won't miss them.

I had an idea for an alternate method of narrowing down the list: Collect all the nominations, including multiple nominations for the same theme, and theme variations, then roll the dice. So if 'Poodle Week' was nominated 5 times, and 'Steampunk Poodle Week' was nominated once, then 'Poodle Week' would have 5x the chance of making it to the final list of nominees.

The final five would be voted on the same as last time.

What do people think? Is this better or worse than the 'every theme that is nominated and seconded has an equal chance' method from last time?

I love you, seriously.

Also, what about those who rather belong to a different nation or have a somewhat bad perception of their own culture?

I would think that you either try to be representative of a different culture and/or nationality, or just don't participate.

Also, if Gothic Lolita is chosen, the male version is known as kodona (http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=kodona).

Repeating for the new page:

Please put nominations in bold print to distinguish them from discussion.

Since I didn't hear any objections, the more nominations a theme gets, the greater its chances of making it to the final cut. So speak up if you like an idea!

Then this to post discussion we just had was pointless and a lost of time, lets pretend that we spent that time solving all of humanity's problem but then we lost focus and forgot what we were talking about.
