View Full Version : Your Favorite Love Song

Tequila Sunrise

Normally I'm not a romantic guy; I don't watch romance movies or read romance novels [unless they're primarily action]. I don't believe in fairy tale romance or True Love. But I'm a sucker for love songs -- often it's the cheesiest ones that get me singing along in the car when I should be watching the road.

So, what's your favorite love song?

And what is it about them that's so empathetic?

Okay, its actually a bit more of a Dirge than a Love Song, but its still amazing. :smallcool:

Hrmm.

VNV Nation - Beloved
Rush - Cold Fire
Moxy Fruvous - Love Set Fire
Great Big Sea - Dream to Live
Dream Theater - Speak to Me

Not traditional love songs (as evidenced by Rush, "This is not a love song; this isn't fantasy land") at all, but they're what I like. Actually I think they're generally more angsty than lovey, which isn't at all surprising if you know me.

Highway 20 Ride. The country song by The Zac Brown Band. Just because it's about how much he cares about his kids that he hardly gets to see after a divorce doesn't mean it isn't a love song. It's family love. I cry every time I hear this song.

Within You - David Bowie
Script for a Jester's Tear - Marillion
Afterglow - Genesis

Within You has my favourite lines in it for a love song - "Live without the sunlight / Love without your heartbeat..." Chilling and romantic at the same time.
Script For a Jester's Tear is beautiful, and strange. And wonderful. And awesome. The lyrics are awesome. "As you grow up and leave the playground / where you kissed your prince and found your frog / Remember the Jester who showed a tear..."
Afterglow is so simple. Crafted with simple lyrics (I miss, you more...), and such a simple melody behind it. Really really effective. My favourite love song of all.

I guess it's the lyrics that make me like a love song, and the music and lyrics in combination that make me adore it.

I'm glad you posted this, because it's my favorite love song of all time. The Ewen McGregor rendition has that stage musical exuberance, but I prefer the original. I like how it's written as one side of an awkward conversation, which makes it so human. I also think it's great how universal Your Song is; it makes no mention of gender so it could be for or about anyone -- whether straight, gay, man or woman.

When I finally settle down with a special woman, I hope Your Song becomes 'our' song.

I think the song is about someone who loves someone and has convinced herself that it's not reciprocated.
OR it really isn't reciprocated.
OR she's falling in love with someone despite an unwillingness to fall in love with them (making herself believe that he doesn't "care a bit").

I don't know. Those lyrics are too confusing. But The Walk- Imogen Heap is more of a love song. I think it's also about falling in love despite an unwillingness to fall in love ("I feel a weakness coming on").

So, though bitter, these songs could be love songs.

Mine are...
Swallowed in the Sea, Green Eyes, 'Til Kingdom Come (I dunno if that counts...) and many other love songs by Coldplay.
I Will Follow You Into the Dark- Deathcab for Cutie
I Think I'm in Love- Beck
Never Met a Girl Like You Before- Flogging Molly
Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
I'm Yours- Jason Mraz
The Too Much Song- Lemon Demon

There's more, but I can't think of them.

Of the ones I've had to sing, "Till There Was You" and "Night and Day" are both pretty high up on my list. I don't have a dusky or husky enough voice for Night and day, sadly. Love to hear a woman with a voice that is dark like tinted glass sing it though. Hoo. Greensleeves is always a great one, but not really what this thread was asking for though.

As far as ones to listen to for myself... hmm... Not sure, really. Hmm... Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton is probably the one I listen to the most... as it's one of my music alarms to keep me from sleeping in. Italian Leather Sofa by Cake is sort of catty-corner to it all, but, not really a love song.

When I was younger it was 500 Miles... by whoever the heck did it back in the 90s.

Well...
Definitely "A Nightingale Sang at Berkeley Square" is the best love song in the world.

Proclaimers, methinks. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM0sTNtWDiI)

I also remembered a few others.

Kiss From a Rose - Seal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMD2TwRvuoU) - Probably the best thing to come out of 'Batman Forever'. ok, I liked the back and forth between the Riddler and Two-Face as well, but still.
The Rose - Bette Midler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR6okRuOLc8) - It's just got that feel to it. It's a great love song.
Love is All Around - Wet Wet Wet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQQ6SfPZggw) - Done to death, I know, but still a decent enough love song.

As The World Falls Down by David Bowie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xZAABsOM7A)I love that song, although it's inextricably bound in my head to Labyrinth in general and the Labyrinth Masquerade (http://www.labyrinthmasquerade.com) in particular.

I should probably add that anything David Bowie/Labyrinth-esque is probably on my list =P

I think the song is about someone who loves someone and has convinced herself that it's not reciprocated.
OR it really isn't reciprocated.

Yeah, there's always those.
But, I take it as a love song because of what it means to me, and the point it came into my life.

Imogen Heap love!

This is a recent favorite of mine. It's got a kinda old school feel but he sounds so...happy to be with the person in question.

Everything- Michael Buble (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPUJIbXN0WY)

Now these two are my real favorites. It has been for a few years now because it has pretty special meaning. When Oz and I were doing long distance we would trade songs, and stuff like "Hard To Concentrate" by the Chili Peppers and some Incubus stuff was on there and I loved it, but these two were just...well, it fit so well and still does.

Hey There Delilah- Plain White T's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbJtYqBYCV8) He actually sent me the lyrics to this once, but with my full first name in place of Delilah. It was adorable.

I Will Follow You Into The Dark- Death Cab For Cutie (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=3285299) It's this version of the video, not the live action one. Seriously...you can't beat bunneh's.

No Need To Argue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOv8bNBEZvU) by the Cranberries.
Just Say It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWC1t_YzDsI), by Sleepthief.
The Littlest Things (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw9wE1nutc4), by Lily Allen.
Bad Actress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABJGUpeHTQI&feature=related), by Terrorvision. (Crappy video, but it's the best I could find.)

Why yes, they are all about breakups. I'm not much of a love song person.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meat Loaf ( Not sad.. But not "good" love either )

Stop right there! I wanna know right now!
Before we go any further do you love me?
Will you love me forever do you need me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and make me your wife?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further do you love me?
Will you love me forever?

How could I have forgotten that?? D:
