Special Abilities

Most of a character's special abilities -- including things that would have been "class abilities" in 3.5e -- are selected in the form of Feats, Kits, and Talents. (You can call them "feats, major feats, and minor feats" if you want, but I think once you get used to it, the different names make things clearer rather than confusing.)

Feats
A Feat represents an area of expertise that your character has focused on enough to make it one of her defining characteristics. Feats are often quite powerful or are useful very often, and are often prerequisites to take many more advanced Talents.

A character has one Feat per class level, plus one bonus Feat granted at Level 1 depending on the character's class.

Kits
A Kit represents an archetype; something tying together many of the character's disparate abilities. Kits often grant a large number of small bonuses to a character. Many of these bonuses are often contingent on the character having some other particular Feat, Talent, or other requirement.

A character may gain one Kit at every odd-numbered class level, plus one Kit at Level 9, when the character enters epic play.

Talents
A Talent is a minor or situational advantage. An ability might be classified as a Talent because it is part of a larger set of abilities, or because it is minor enough that every character could potentially pick it up eventually, "when they get around to it." A Talent might grant a small numerical bonus to a character, or it might remove a restriction on another ability, or it may allow a character to make a reroll or a replacement roll in certain situations. Read more rules on Talents or look up individual Talent descriptions here.

A character has one Talent per character level (including epic levels), plus a number of Talents equal to 3+[Wit modifier], plus whatever bonus Talents are granted by the character's other abilities.

Some talents have the [Epic] tag and may only be taken after a character has entered epic play. These talents may not be so minor or situational.

Other Explanations

Heroic Bonus
Your Heroic Bonus is equal to half your class levels (rounded down). It is referenced by a few other rules. The most common place your Heroic Bonus matters, however, is that it comprises part of your base Saves.

Class Levels
Your class and level determine your character's Fighting Level, Coast Number, Caster Level, and Vitality Points, as well as which feat you receive as a Bonus Feat at Level 1. See individual classes' tables for details.

Good Save
At level one, choose whether your character has a Good Fortitude Save, Good Reflex Save, or Good Will Save. Your chosen save gains a +2 bonus to its base value, in addition to your Heroic Bonus and an ability modifier.

Ability Boost
Each time a character achieves an Ability Boost, she may increase two different abilities by +1 each.
