So far mine is the fox. I have always loved their adorable tails. (Yes, I am a man and I said adorable... GET OVER IT) They are basically rogues that took the levels of druid to get wildshape.

Probably going to have to go for the Nautilus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautilus) myself. If not for the fact that it's actually real I would have thought that it was something H.P. Lovecraft dreamed up.

It was the first animal I thought as my favourite, as far as I can recall.

It always was and it always will be!

I think this TV series had something to do with my choice, when I was a child:

Yes, my #1 favorite animal is the cat. Other not-quite-as-perfect-but-still-nice animals include the llama and the Komodo dragon. But really, I like most animals. That does not include some of the creepier bugs, however, especially not spiders and earwigs. Strangely enough, I do think scorpions are awesome.

They are pretty passive, but feeding them is a show. Also they make nice living jewelry.

My favourite is the Panda Bear, followed closely by Wolves.

Whip-poor-will

No, they're not predatory or even pretty, but they sing lovesongs all night within the woods, to which I can relate.

Few birds also have so much mythology to them, from being able to see departing souls to being an early warning signal of encroaching evil.

Also, I love birds. In fact, except for birds of prey, I usually seem to be the only one.

Depends on the mood. Per default, it's wolves. But when I'm feeling depressed or lonely, I'll go with something more fluffy and adorable instead. Like bunnies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04RZrf3-Mgo&feature=related) or seals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzGt-g7vEd4).

That does not include some of the creepier bugs, however, especially not spiders and earwigs.I used to be scared of earwigs, but then I found out that they're excellent mothers. It's hard to hate something that's a good mum.
So, for now, I dislike ticks and most primates (bonobos are nice, and lemurs are pretty cool), and want various bugs away from my person although I don't mind them at a distance. Also rabbits are evil.
In case anyone's interested: pygmy marmosets piss at you when they don't like you, and as I mentioned before, they don't like toes, as I discovered when I wored sandals to work once.

My Boy only recently discovered that red pandas are a real animal. Now he thinks they're the most adorable thing ever and desperately wants one.

edit: "wored"? I'm going to leave that in as punishment. That'll learn me.

Spotted Hyena. Wedge-Tailed Eagle. Pistol Shrimp.

...Does Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann count as an animal? :smalltongue:

You know, I think I'm gonna have to go with the pistol shrimp/snapping shrimp (assuming Viral doesn't count  ). Any shrimp which can create a sound with 80,000 Pascals of pressure, as well as creating a point of temperature over 90% that of the surface of the sun takes first place in my book.

Also, quetzalcoatlus. Not only does it have an awesome name, but it looks like this:
http://www.futura-sciences.com/fileadmin/Fichiers/images/Vie/quetzacoalt.jpgHow is that not a real-life dragon?!*

*"It doesn't breathe fire etc etc." Therefore, salamanders aren't salamanders of legend because they don't live in fire, cats aren't cats of legend because they don't have 9 lives and can't see dead people, crows aren't crows of legend because they can't turn into humans... Point being, a creature can still be the origin of a legend even if all the superstitions and whimsical extras turn out to be wrong.

An Allosaurus.

Imagine a creature carrying a set of giant meathooks on its hands with which to grab you as it bites your head off. Now consider that this creature utterly dominated an environment with plenty of other predators, some bigger than itself.

Also, there's evidence of some form of social structure, given that allosaur "lairs" (with shed teeth of young and adult allosaurs but no other carnivores) have been found on occasion.

If this doesn't add up to "Awesome" I don't know what does. For further reading, I recommend Irregular Webcomic.
