View Full Version : Dragon in the Playground 2010 - Voting

Athaniar
2010-02-14, 07:40 AM
THERE IS NO NOMINATION, ONLY ZUUL VOTING

I finally came up with a good concept for a new "in the Playground": dragons! You all know how this works, right? No? Alright, then:

For the purpose of this contest, "dragon" does not necessarily mean a "true dragon". To make it simple, ask yourself this question: "In Dungeons & Dragons terms, would this be a dragon-type creature?"

If the answer is yes, you can nominate it. You can also nominate "augmented" dragons if you wish, such as dragon gods and dracoliches.

Also note that I only accept unique dragons. So no nominating "black dragon" or "dracolich", be specific!

Any one forumite may nominate up to ten (10) dragons qualifying as per the rules above. Nomination will stop once 128 dragons (no more, no less) have been nominated. Voting will then begin. THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED

Please, please use the same format as I use when nominating. It makes it easier for me. The format is Dragon (Franchise).

EDIT: If you do not state the franchise (or at least give some indication of the dragon's origin), the nomination will be disqualified.

QUESTION:does Maleficent (Disney) count as a dragon?

If so, guess what my nomination is.

If not, then Tusenmaug (D&D), the first dragon any D&D 3.5 gamer does battle with. Also the cause of my first TPK.

I should know many more off the top of my head than I do...
10 nominations:
Red Dragon (Bible)
Leviathan (Bible)
Ishtah dragons
Dragon of Babylon (Bible)
Illuyanka (Hittite myth)
Shesha Naga (Hindu myth)
Lotan (Canaanite myth)
Yamm (Cananite myth)

Tiamat (Sumerian water/chaos deity)

2nd choices:
Rainbow Serpent (Australian, debatable)
Whowie (Australian, debatable)
Garden of Eden Serpent (Bible. Note: condemned by God to crawl on its belly - didn't slither until then, word translated "serpent" ambiguous)

Lemme see...

Tintaglia (Liveship Traders Trilogy). As always when I nominate something slightly more obscure, no one will vote for it. But that lady is just such arrogant bastard, she has to be on the list.

Chronepsis (DnD). The dragon god of time. Has a fascinating domain, at least.

I'll think of more later.

I...honestly have no idea :smallconfused: .

Although it's never actually said out loud, I'd say that it's fairly safe to assume that her usual form is her true form. Therefore she wouldn't count for the purposes of this list.

It's been a long time since I read those books. Remind me of her?

It's one huge spoiler, but okay.

Tintaglia is buried in a cocoon under the elderling city on the rainwild river where she is hibernating until the sun hits her. She can still send telepathic signals and dreams to various humans, though, and tries to get them to dig her out instead of chopping her up for more wizardwood.
Once she is out she tells humanity to shut up, sit down, forget their stupid wars and start to serve her. First by digging out new channels in an acid filled river so that more serpents can mature into dragons.
Because, as everyone knows, humans are good for two things only: food and serving dragons. When they are not just ignored.

It's just an attitude I think more dragons should have. They are (near) immortal, basically invulnerable, intelligent and powerful magicians. I don't get why so many of them behave like either thugs or wise old plot-dispensers.

Better her than Icefyre, at any rate.

I...honestly have no idea :smallconfused: .

Well, she was only remotely connected to what she was in the fairy tale, but at least there, she was one of the queens of faerie. So I'd say she just changed shape into one.

Can I nominate all of Argonessen, i.e. the Dragons of Eberron?

I'll throw in a vote for
The King (no name given otherwise, Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!).
Very dragony - almost completely invulnerable, so powerful that it doesn't even need to waste time being cunning (which is well within its capabilities), and because of both of these things, arrogant in a way that is entirely reasonable and founded solidly in reality.

Tiamat (Sumerian water/chaos deity)
But isn't Tiamat's portrayal as a dragon a modern invention?

If they aren't somehow one single individual, then no. However, feel free to nominate Eberron, Siberys, or Khyber.

Altaria (Pokemon)

They're only found in one place, so I reckon they count as one creature :smalltongue: Theorised that they might be based on a real animal.

But isn't Tiamat's portrayal as a dragon a modern invention? There's little ancient evidence for her being a dragon (except, from wikipedia: The Enûma Elish specifically states that Tiamat did give birth to dragons and serpents... Within the Enûma Elish her physical description includes a tail, a thigh, "lower parts" (which shake together), a belly, an udder, ribs, a neck, a head, a skull, eyes, nostrils, a mouth, and lips. She has insides (possibly "entrails"), a heart, arteries, and blood), but it's not completely modern, I think. This may be Tiamat (I'm not sure):

Thinly Veiled Allegory (OotS Dragon comicses)
Bolt (The Liveship Trilogy)
Nicol Bolas (Magic: The Gathering)
The Angry White (The Liveship Trilogy. I don't remember his name, but he's the vicious angry white who remembers and constantly despairs.)

Yes, I like Robin Hobb. You got a problem wid that?
Also, a lot of my choices are either dragon eggs or deformed dragons, so I'm going to assume they count under "augmented" dragons. Also, two are deformed dragons. One is a god, but not a dragon god, only a god who used to be a dragon.
EDIT- I feel a need to object to Leviathan being on the list. He's a fish. In my Hebrew edition (source language trumps all), he's just referred to as a big fish. Dragons are not fish.

I can't see anyone has mentioned the Ogdru Jahad, they are the Dragon of Revelation, destined to bring about the end of the world.

Also, clearly the most badass name a dragon has ever had. There is also The Tarasque. A dragon tamed by Saint Martha, part of a french tale.

Funny thing is, I saw this thread while I was actually statting Kushala Daora, which is indeed a dragon, for my tabletop game .

Anyway, don't know if it's been mentioned, but if we have to only mention unique dragons (because if species were allowed I'd be nominating half the Elder Dragon roster in Monster Hunter, plus Narga), I'm casting a nomination for Niv-Mizzet the Firemind, cunning and vain bastard that he is.

Are those really unique?

No they aren't - they're species. However, Pokémon does have a few unique Dragons - there's Rayquaza, who controls wind and weather alike, and Palkia and Dialga, who control the dimensions of Time and space respectively.

EDIT- I feel a need to object to Leviathan being on the list. He's a fish. In my Hebrew edition (source language trumps all), he's just referred to as a big fish. Dragons are not fish. Not true, or at least not completely. At least once in the Bible he's referred to as a "crooked serpent", and there are various other factors that suggest that at the very least it can be considered a sea serpent. It is also related to various other "serpent" or dragon creatures. Its identity is not at all well defined, but "dragon" or "dragon-like" is as valid as any other.

I can't see anyone has mentioned the Ogdru Jahad, they are the Dragon of Revelation, destined to bring about the end of the world. You mean the Red Dragon I already mentioned? I didn't know that name, though, so I'm happy for that to go in instead.
No. Also, I believe they are called Sirrush. Even your links say that. And no ancient Tiamat.I know they are, but they're also called Ishtar dragons, what with being on the Ishtar gate. And seeing as that's the only place they're ever depicted, I don't think it's unreasonable to consider them multiple depictions of a single creature... but whatever. And okay on the ancient Tiamat. I wish I could find that painting...

Also, should I really consider Quetzalcoatl a dragon? He is a serpent with wings, but dragon... I'm not sure. He's a "feathered serpent", and his statuary meets the observation of dragons from Flight of Dragons (book) that "monstrous faces" are the combining feature of dragons around the world. Compare:

You mean the Red Dragon I already mentioned? I didn't know that name, though, so I'm happy for that to go in instead.

The Ogdru Jahad name is from the Hellboy series and as far as I can see it's pretty different from the Red Dragon mentioned in Revelations both in looks and personality ( The only similarity being that The Red Dragon has seven heads, and the Ogru Jahad is one entity composed of seven personalities), even if it is the same dragon. Mike Mignola just gave it some flair and originality to fit into his modern comic. I guess Lord Xavius will have to decide whether or not they count as two different ones though. I'd like them both to be in because they are both unique to two different mythos.

Crud, I can't remember the name of that Dragon Hagrid raises in the first Harry Potter book, could someone remind me, please?
Edit: Also, would Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Winged Dragon of Ra from Yu-Gi-Oh count? Because in the anime there's only one of each Egyptian God, and only three Blue-Eyes, so there could only really be one Ultimate Dragon...

And if they count:
Winged Dragon of Ra (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon (Yu-Gi-Oh!)

Is he really a dragon?
Bowser kind of looks like the Tarasque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarasque) and breaths fire. That seems good enough to me.

Also, I think Ran and Shao should be listed together, since they appear together and act in unison, and there's no indication of which is which.

Still accepting nominations? If so, I totally nominate Akatosh from the Elder Scrolls. Chief deity of the Nine Divines, Lord over time itself, hell yeah! Akatosh!

I totally forgot him! I am ashamed, for I had just played Oblivion not four days ago.

Well, those aren't unique in the anime, there are three Blue-Eyes, and Red-Eyes is never mentioned as unique in any way

Reasonable enough.

I feel like being nice, so alright then, Bowser accepted.

They count as two different creatures unless you can prove that they are, in fact, the same creature, or at least two creatures sharing one mind.

Well, the disciple of Ashardalon PrC does the same thing, but inventing a dragon-only "disciple of [your name]" class is still pretty cool.

Oh noes! I also forgot about The Dragon and the George! All the following are from that book, in order of how much I want them included:

Jim Eckert (a human from "our world" who ends up in an alternate reality, in the body of a dragon)
Smrgol (Gorbash's uncle, wise old dragon)
Secoh (brave cowardly mere-dragon)
Gorbash (the dragon whose body Jim ends up in. I believe he got stuck in Jim's "real-world" body)
Bryagh (old, evil dragon)

I heartily recommend this book, by the way.

Sounds like a shapeshifter to me. So no, it would not count.

The Archdemon (Dragon Age)
It's not too late (there are still 8 dragons left to be nominated), but that one has already been nominated.

EDIT: Wait, I allowed Fafnir? He was a shapeshifter, so he's out. That means there are 9 open spots left.

Many of the dragons on the list already spend an inordinate amount of time in human form. Most of the Warcraft dragons, for example, do this.

Round 1 is ready to be ended, but there are still some groupings yet to be finished. That means it's time for Endgame. All groups in which a winner already exists have been locked, and Playgrounders can now only vote in the groups listed below. Please note that you may NOT vote again if you have already voted in that specific group (although you may vote again if you have previously voted, but not in the group in question). Once a single vote tips the balance in a group, that group will be declared locked. Once all four groups are locked, Round 1 is officially over.

One vote for Smaug, no one else except Glaurung comes close.

I mean, Smaug was the first dragon in western literature to have, y'know, a personality, as far as I know of anyway.

If you had said modern western literature I could've agreed, as it stands I can't.

Well, I did ad the caveat "That I know of".

Who are you thinking of in pre-modern western literature? In my experience pre-Tolkien dragons are fearsome monsters who no one ever interacts with aside from fleeing or fighting.

Oh, and I know this won't be officially counted because I'm not going through the formal voting template, but I'd throw in a runner-up vote for old Smrgol - he was a great character.

Also want to throw in even though it's past the entry time a shout out to Mayland Long the Black Dragon, from R.A. MacAvoy's excellent books Tea With the Black Dragon and Twisting the Rope. Funny thing is that Long appears as an elderly Asian gentleman who tells peple (a few people, anyway) that he is actually a dragon, but we never see it. But one ends up inclined to believe him anyway.

I think the problem that I have is your very narrow definition of personality. Is being talked to a prerequisite for having a personality? Is being able to read about it in black and white on a page a prerequisite for having a personality?

I find the charm with mythological dragons is that you're never really sure whether they are sentient beings or not. Sentient to level where they can interact with humans intelligently anyway. I mean, dogs have personalities, or so their owners claim. This would also mean that any animal ( Dragons aswell) could develop a personality, or already has one if you look for it.

Ah, you got me there. The dumb part is, I was actually thinking about that story while posting, but convinced myself that it must have come out after The Hobibt and didn't bother websearching to verify.

I'm also reminded now that A.E. Nesbit wrote some great stories that featured dragons as more than especially fearsome animals as well, predating Tolkien by 3 or 4 decades.

I was just overwhelmed by the force of Smuag's personality, even at his distance...

I would like to nominate Haku from Spirited Away.

Um, but it is his human form. The true Dragon was called Kohaku.

The Archdemon (Dragon Age)

That would be Urthemiel, the Dragon of Beauty, TYVM.

And I have to agree - Leviatan is a fish. Not a dragon. See the medieval picture here (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/Lev-Beh-Ziz.jpg). Its description as almost verbatim description of a whale, especially that part about blowing steam out of nostril. In fact, moder translations use 'fish' or 'whale' instead.

"Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion. Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride."

In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish the leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Yeah, that's a whale...

No, it's not. Or rather, there are many different interpretations. I think Lord Xavius pointed out the most relevant passages, and also the Leviathan is associated with dragons and sea serpents of various other ancient religions and myths. Leviathan has been associated with whales and giant fish, but that is by far the only association, and frequently is described as far more reptilian. In fact, to counter your own medieval picture:
http://universalheretic.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/destruction_of_leviathan.png?w=450&h=559
http://www.1st-art-gallery.com/thumbnail/105283/1/Behemoth-And-Leviathan-From-The-Book-Of-Job.jpg
Basically, if it's not a dragon, I'm in big trouble, cuz it's a major part of my honours thesis.

Glaurung is one helluva evil bastard, and we get to see his finest hours on-screen in the Silmarillion, causing absolutely horrible things to happen both with sheer incredible brute strength and screwing with people's heads in spectacularly horrifying ways. Plus, he's the first dragon.
Smaug was less manipulative and more pure, hyper-fired power and phenomenally badassed arrogance.

Revenge! Revenge! The King under the Mountain is dead and where are his kin that dare seek revenge? Girion Lord of Dale is dead, and where are his sons' sons that dare approach me? I kill where I wish and none dare resist. I laid low the warriors of old and their like is not in the world today. Then I was but young and tender. Now I am old and strong, strong, strong, Thief in the shadows! My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail is a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!
Alas, we don't get to see his greatest accomplishments, only hear about them (admittedly, quite a lot). He's the last great dragon, the end-book to Glaurung.

I am literally incapable of deciding on this. If it's possible, count my useless stalemated brain as one vote for each rather than nought-all. Lord knows they both deserve it.
Glaurung (Tolkien)
Smaug (Tolkien)

Midgard serpent - Smaug: 4-5? great match, a pity for the world huggling snake.

Anyway, the final match.. Smaug Vs Glaurung is a tough one. My preference will go to the dragon that I first loved, when I was a boy: SMAUG.

JonestheSpy
2010-03-26, 02:43 PM
Very tough call. Especially after reading The Children of Hurin, which expands Glaurung's character quite a bit.

In the end I have to give it to Smaug, both because of his longtime importance in the genre, and because he's a more pleasant conversationalist. Sure, he might be playing cat-and-mouse, but he's still playing. Start talking to Glaurung and you're pretty much doomed.

Remmirath
