I love the idea. I love it to death, in fact.

However, I'm not exactly certain on how to implement it. How would one decide on which abilities were available for learning? How would one use said abilities?

The closest thing that 3.5 has to offer is the spellthief, and they're... not quite what I'm looking for, here. The spellthief, for one, only has the option to hijack spells and SLAs; it takes DM fiat or a slight reworking for them to take psionics.

Plus, there's a host of nice (Su) abilities that wouldn't be too broken for player use that also have no real analogue in the normal spell lists.

Has anyone here done any work on this idea?

From the depths of the pit, I summon you! (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19526914/New_Class__Blue_Mage)

EDIT: Bah, looks like the link is only half-good. Seems that the numerous changes to the WotC boards have tanked the actual description of the class features. I'll see if I can't Google-Fu up something better.

Sup.

I've made one, but it only works on monster abilities. I'm sure someone could beat it until it works with other stuff.

Karma Guard, that is EXACTLY the idea that I had in mind.

My hat goes off to you, sir. Thanks.

I believe I should playtest this in the best way that I know- using it as a foe in one of my campaigns. THAT will set 'em back a step or two. They didn't like the Summoner... :D

Not sure if this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145069) is what you're looking for, but if memory serves Blue Mages copy things, such does this class.

Nice self-promotion. :p

A while back, I saw a homebrew Blue Mage class that was similar to a spellthief... can't seem to find it now, though.

They do not; they learn monstrous magic by being the target of said magic themselves. In a way, I guess you could call it copying, but they're not mirroring the magic, they're learning it and using it on their own.

EDIT: Also, Karma Guard... I think I love you. <3

Personally, I'd just ignore psionics. It's a MAGE, not a psion. Include 'monster magic' stuff like SLAs, SUAs, and certain EXAs.

Make it a spellcraft check to learn the ability. That way you won't break the game with a stealth snag of an epic level spell.

Capping the number of spells you know kind of limits the blue mage a bit. Acquiring magic is harder and puts you at risk for no benefit above other casters? At least increase their spell slot limit.

Also, the final icing on the cake should be the acquiring of things that don't need to be magic at all.

To acquire psionics, you need a feat though, since it would put you at a major advantage for using psionics without requiring power points - however, you'd still need to have psionic focus, maybe. Or maybe psionic powers would just become spells with the addition of psionic focus required.

Absolutely mundane things like certain fighter bonus feats cannot be learned. You can learn some feats, but they work like spells.

While we are doing self promotion: My Invoker (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146461) has a bit of a blue mage feel to it.

You could always give it tactile acquisition at level 1, and make that the only way it can add spells to it's mindpool for full flavor.

Later in this campaign my lizardfolk fighter is due to get blue magic, but his blue magic would be gained by eating his fallen foes.
Such as eyes in the back of his head(all-around vision) form eating a beholder.

I think that's already been done (either on here or in the books), but it's not spells - just EXA stuff.
