Chapter I: There Is No Honor
Part One: A Noble in Need
In the port city of Sasserine, five strangers made their way to the Vanderboren manor on Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane in the Merchant District. The sun was low in the sky, painting the city in a wash of gold and pink. The salty air was warm and muggy, thick with the potent smells of the thriving city. The Merchant District itself was far from finished with the day's business: merchants still hawked their wares, customers haggled and argued over prices, and street urchins scampered underfoot on random errands. Here and there a street performer plays a merry tune, a troupe of buffoons tumbles and juggles, and on one corner a fire-breather adds even more heat to the evening air. Gold and silver is flowing, almost as much as the rum, but as you near the residential side of the district the noise dies down a bit.
Vanderboren Manor is impossible to miss: a tall, three-story gothic affair surrounded by a seven-foot-high stone wall. The manor grounds feature several trees that help conceal it from the hustle and bustle of the city. The front gate is open, and you make your way into the quiet, somewhat cooler air of the courtyard. A fountain gurgles in the shadow of the mansion, and a variety of grotesque gargoyles leer down at you from above. As you each arrive, you knock on the fine oaken front double doors and are admitted into the parlor by a wizened halfling woman whom a few of you recognize. She greets each of you in turn.
"Welcome to Vanderboren Manor. Lady Lavinia will be with you shortly. Please, make yourselves comfortable."
The parlor is well-equipped with cushioned benches, and the halfling brings out a tray with a pitcher of ice water and glass cups while you wait.
The group that has gathered here is rather motley assortment of folk, to be sure…
(Feel free to describe your characters appearance and entrance. We'll move along shortly.)

Sitting by the door, waiting, is a clean, and cleanly-attired, hobgoblin. His red-orange skin is mostly covered by a dark red artisan's outfit. In one hand he holds a fine leather tricorne hat, which he took off upon entry; in the other, a small, corked bottle of local wine.
These oddities, as well as the holy symbol around his neck, serve to identify him as Radiant Kol, an itinerant ship's chaplain who spends time between berths in the Azure district.
Quietly, as if to pass the time, he is whistling a sea shanty that will win him no accolades, and yet isn't entirely unpleasing to the ear.

Entering last is an average-sized woman with short, dark hair. Her garb is indicative of a person who's lifted a finger or ten aboard a ship, but who does the same amount of running around on land. With thick, worn pants and sturdy boots, the only exception is the wrinkled white blouse that looks like it hasn't been worn in ages, but has just recently been unpacked from the bottom of a bag.
Her face bears subtle yet pleasant smile, one side of her lips upturned as her eyes make their way over the present group, pausing for several seconds on each one and focused intently when they do. She is clearly attempting to process all of this, thus at first ignoring the halfling woman, and her expression is not doing well to hide the good humored amusement she finds in this situation. She takes a seat and stretches a bit, having accepted the ice water. She takes a long sip before addressing the room:
Any ideas as to what they've got lined up for us? I'm betting it's not exactly orthodox, given the group. She pauses for a second, then leans forward, glass in left hand, right hand twisting a ring on her left middle finger. Not to say that any of you are weird- I'm probably the weirdest person here she smiles but it's just a rare sight, you know? Having a small group this diverse working together. I'm glad to see it. Presumption is a dangerous folly.

A sound much different from the soft thud of boots is heard coming up towards the manor. The sound is both heavier and harder, more akin to the sound of a horse approaching, though the beats are too few in number to be a four-legged animal. This clopping makes it to the front door of the manor, followed by a heavy snort that does sound like a horse, or maybe a bull, stands waiting before the door. When the Halfling attendant answers the door, she finds herself staring at a young minotaur. His horns have been scraped clean and banded with a small rings of gold, one each. He wears the scarred leather armor of a gladiator, similar to a rogue's studded leather, but thicker in some places and more showy. The hilt of a greatsword protrudes from his back and his tail smacks against the bottom of the sheath near his hindquarters. He smells freshly bathed and even wears a gold torque around his left arm.
Once he has been brought into the waiting area, the young bull eyes those who have already arrived warily. Though he is still a calf he already stands taller than most human men and is clearly a formidable opponent. When offered he attempts to take a glass of water, though he is unaccustomed to such finery and drops the glass on the floor, shattering it. A look of anger flashes across his face and he snorts loudly before apparently regaining control of himself. He lifts himself up to his full stature and announces to the group, just as he practiced with his mentor, "I am Turok. It is an honor to meet you. How may my sword be of service?" The bull is clearly very uncomfortable and out of his element.

Fran
Fran arrived exactly five minutes before the given time, and most likely before the rest of the group. She sits with her back straight, her left hand wrapped around a glass of water, and inspects every new arrival calmly. She wears a red shirt and long leggings, over which she sports a grey cloak and a knee-length skirt. A St-Cuthbert brooch keeps her cloak clasped around her neck, and despite he warmth she does not remove it.
When Cecilia enters, Fran pushes back a strand of her greyish blond hair and smiles back. Her tone is pleasant, but her blue eyes do not match that warmth."Presumption is all a question of perception, you know. Why would you be the weirdest person?"

Cecilia sits back and smiles. Well said. I suppose my hypocrisy is pretty "normal" though. Upon the minotaur's arrival and subsequent glass-dropping, she can't help but stare, her expression blank, eyes intent. When he stands up and delivers his line, she is silent for a moment, trying to contain a smile before erupting in laughter. I take back what I said earlier. I don't think I can top that. And I think we'd all like an answer to that question, though we're still waiting for that. Relax, Turok. Take a seat.
Her smile is warm and genuine, giving the impression that she isn't aware of the potential for offense to be taken from her comment. By the way, everyone- my name is Cecilia, but I answer more frequently to Lia.

Somewhere in the middle of the arrivals, the wizened halfling opens the door to reveal a tall, full-figured woman with smooth, black skin. She has no hair, but her right eye is surrounded with a large patch of milk-white skin that extends up onto her scalp, matching a similar patch that covers her exposed shoulder. She wears a long, strapless, form-fitting dress of soft, light brown leather, the edge across her chest trimmed with snowy fur. The lower edge is similarly trimmed, stopping a few inches shy of her ankle. A long slit extends up one side of the dress leaving her leg free enough to walk properly. At the highest point of the slit rests a small disk ringed with the same white fur and criss-crossed with small straps that weave together into an elaborate, decorative pattern. The only jewelry she wears is a necklace of a simple leather thong and a number of massive teeth and scrimshaw decorations around the centerpiece, a dragon with it's wings spread wide, it's long body and tail dangling down between them toward her chest.
She gave a short bow to those who had already arrived when she was shown to the waiting area, before taking a seat on one of the couches, watching quietly while the rest arrived.
She smiled as everyone began to introduce themselves. "I suppose this is a pretty good chance to introduce myself as well." She said, standing and giving everyone another bow. "My name is Tiilaquiia, but most people just call me Tii." She said. "It's a pleasure to meet all of you." She added, then sat down once more.

A few minutes pass before another group of people enters the entry parlor, on their way out of the manor, apparently. There are four of them: a male half-elf clad in leather armor, armed with a half-dozen daggers of different shapes and sizes, with a cocksure attitude and a jauntiness to his step; a dark-skinned, sour-looking male dwarf dressed in green and brown robes, clutching a spear; an attractive but haughty-looking human woman dressed in dark purple robes with a tattoo of a crescent moon on her right cheek; and lastly, a tall, handsome human man dressed in a polished breastplate, a bastard sword sheathed and slung over his shoulder.
[DC 15 Knowledge (local)]:
This would be a local mercenary band called the Jade Ravens.
The human man is the leader, one Tolin Kientai. The half-elf is named Zan Oldavin, the dwarf is a mystic called Kaskus Kiel, and the human woman is one Liamae Teslikaria, a talented arcanist.
The group is a professionally run adventuring and mercenary service. Primarily swords-for-hire, they have a respectable and trustworthy reputation.
It would seem this group is on a mission or task of some importance. They all walk by without a second glance, exiting out into the muggy evening air. The man in the breastplate lingers a moment, however, looking over you with what could be a smirk or a sneer.
"Hmm. You must be the help Lavinia's bringing in to do the chores. Best of luck to ya!"
Without waiting for a response, he turns on his heel and follows the others out the door.
The halfling woman returns with a dustpan and sweeps up the shattered glass dropped by Turok. She looks somewhat annoyed by this, but says nothing. She leaves with the rubbish, but soon after returns. "Lavinia will see you now. Follow me, please."
You follow the halfling through a short hallway into a fine private dining hall. The hall is comfortable and cozy, softly lit by wall-mounted lanterns. A window overlooks the manor's central courtyard, and the carpet is thick and soft. A large portrait hangs on the wall, depicting a handsome young man with a short beard and mustache.
Standing before the portrait is an attractive human woman wearing a long, low cut, flowing blue dress. She smiles as you enter; glancing at the portrait once more, you might notice her eyes, lips, nose, chestnut hair, and general facial structure are quite similar to the man in the painting (no doubt a relative of some sort).
"Welcome, welcome. I am Lavinia Vanderboren. Thank you so much for coming. Please, make yourselves comfortable. Ah, Kora, could you bring something sturdier for the Young Bull to sit on?"
The halfling woman, apparently called Kora, returns dragging a stout oaken chest. She drapes a blanket over it and a few cushions, and offers it to the minotaur. Lavinia sits down at the head of the table, her back to the window.
As you all settle in, Kora exits and enters the room several times. First, she brings another tray with a pitcher of water and a bottle of wine. Joining the glass cups is a sturdier ceramic mug, apparently intended for Turok. Sliced bread and butter, and a salad of mixed greens, apples, goat cheese, and pine nuts is also brought out, apparently the first course.

Having no idea who these people are, the Young Bull merely stares as they walk by, giving only a quick snort when the man makes his remark.
When offered his own seat, the bull sits down (albeit awkwardly) and grabs an apple, shoving the entire thing into his mouth. He chews it quickly before reaching towards the greens. The minotaur is about to go after the food with his bare hands and snout before remembering that he is supposed to "behave." He has no skill with utensils so he takes the mug given especially for him and drinks, spilling only a minimal amount all over himself.
The Young Bull can't help but smile and swell with pride when this woman knows who he is. He gives a little laugh and asks:
"Heh. You have heard of the Young Bull? What do you want with me?"
Though his question may appear gruff, it is easy to tell that it is his less-than-perfect understanding of the language coupled with his bestial nature that makes him so unintentionally rude.

Before sitting, Kol presents his hostess with the bottle of wine. "My apologies, Ms. Vanderboren; I was unsure as to whether a small gift was appropriate, and decided to err on the side of appreciation for hospitality." Slightly nervous, he sits down and pays attention, making idle small talk when necessary, and thanks his legion training for at least teaching him to use a knife and fork.

Tii quietly follows the rest of the group into the dining room, quietly looking over the finery of the room as she enters, her eyes a little wide as she takes it all in with wonder. She jerks out of her distraction as the hostess begins to speak and Kora begins to bring out the food. Trying to be on her best manners, Tiiaquiia smiles softly at the young human. "There is no need to thank us. I'm quite sure each of us is grateful for the opportunity you're providing us." She said, picking up the wrong fork and digging into her salad as gracefully as she could, being extremely careful not to spill any on the immaculate floor or tablecloth.

Fran Tessler
Fran watches the mercenary pass her with an almost envious look. She knows their reputation, and briefly wonders if she would not be in a better position with her than with the mismatched group gathered around her. You take what you are offered, dear, or you'll remain a lowly guard with easy affairs all you life.
With a sigh, she follows her companion out of the room. She'll move next to Kol and whisper briefly: "The name's Fran, and as it's already short, there will be no need to make it even shorter."
She falls silent as they enter the room, letting their hostess and the others talk first, meanwhile filling her plate in. Although this is only the first course, and Fran is a woman of short stature, she is putting quite a lot of food before her.
Once Tii is done speaking, she sees her chance to chime in. "Speaking of opportunity... we have all wondered why we were asked to come here. Milady, we would be grateful to know what, exactly, is this opportunity."

Lavinia smiles genuinely as Kol hands her the wine.
"Oh, thank you! You must be Kol, yes? You didn't need to bring this, but I appreciate it all the same. Kora! Put this on ice, please. Perhaps we'll have it with the dessert."
She nods and smiles as everyone chimes in. It would seem everyone is quite keen on getting right down to business, so Lavinia obliges. She doesn't touch her salad, but rather picks up her glass of wine and stands, pacing at first to the window, looking out at the setting sun, her back to you.
"I suppose you would all be rather curious, given the vagueness of the missives I sent. Some of you I contacted in person, others through organizations you're involved with. I'm somewhat flattered, but mostly relieved, that I got positive responses so quickly.
I may be a noble, I may even be a Vanderboren, but I cannot handle every last problem that rears its ugly head.
As you may have heard, I recently inherited my parents' estate. Along with this fine house, unfortunately, came a fine amount of debt owed the Dawn Council, the harbormaster, and quite a few guildhalls. It seems my parents, for all their success as adventurers, were not as skilled at finance as one might expect. If I'm to get these taxes paid, I'll need to access my family's vault under Castle Teraknian."
You are all familiar with the castle; it sits on a small island just inside the mouth of the harbor. It has largely been empty for many decades, the Teraknian line having long since been extinguished after a famous betrayal.
Lavinia turns to face you once again. She sips her wine, looking pensive.
"And that's the problem, you see. The vaults are magically locked, keyed to special signet rings. Both of my parents had these rings, at least, until recently. My mother lost hers a few months ago. She arranged for a replacement, but it won't be done for another month or so, too late for me. Which leaves my father's ring. He never wore it… he had a thing about men wearing jewelry. He kept it hidden somewhere on his ship, the Blue Nixie. The problem is that the harbormaster's seized the ship until someone pays for the last four months of mooring. I've paid the fines to the man the harbormaster's put in charge of my ship, a brute named Soller Vark. Yet when I went to claim my ship, Vark's men wouldn't let me board, claiming that I hadn't yet paid the fines. I spoke to Vark again and he denied ever receiving my payment. My complaints to the harbormaster have fallen on deaf ears… he's a doddering old fool who trusts his man and won't relent.
Vark and his men are up to something on my ship, I know it. What I need is to find out exactly what they're up to. Unfortunately, Vark's not the type to react well to diplomacy or logic. I need someone who speaks his language… which is where you come in. If you can find out what he's using my ship for, or even better, recover the money I paid him, I'll pay each of you 200 gold in return once I've access to my vault."
Lavinia tries to sound professional and authoritative as she says all of this, but she looks to you with a certain trepidation. For a second, her eyes are almost pleading to you, but she glances downwards and sips her wine once more.

Having glared fiercely at the man of the other adventuring party as he delivered his comment, it was clear that it left Cecilia in a bit of a bad mood. Were the circumstances different, she would have lost her temper in a moment, but she could be restrained. Nonetheless, she hardly acknowledged the salad in front of her and focused instead on the wine, staring intently at the tablecloth.
However, upon hearing the job and its terms, she perks up more than a bit. With her classic, lopsided smile, she spouts exuberantly- Count me in! I'd love to show those marauding scoundrels what happens when they try to take advantage of their betters. She puts unnecessary emphasis on that last word, and realizes the passion in her gaze at Miss Vanderboren along with the intensity with which she is grasping her fork might be a bit out of place at the moment. Embarrassed, she settles down a bit, and returns to looking at the table cloth. *cough* er...that is to say...I think I can be of service in this matter. Looking up again- thank you for this opportunity. I won't let you down.

Lavinia seems notably relieved that you seem so enthusiastic about helping her. She finally sits down again, just as Kora brings in the next course: a creamy pumpkin and squash soup, seasoned with nutmeg.
"I know this all sounds rather ambiguous, as far as legality is concerned, but I'm afraid the City Watch will be mired down in bureaucracy for weeks before they'll do anything, and as I mentioned before the harbormaster won't listen to me. If I don't get access to my vault soon, I'll be run out of house and home by debt collectors. I need to take action now. If you can help me, and try to make the whole affair somewhat... inconspicuous, I'll be able to avoid any suspicion, and you'll all be 200 gold richer.
If you have any questions, please, feel free to ask. You'll find the Blue Nixie moored at pier 34 in the western side of the Merchant District. When and how you decide to do this I leave up to you, but the sooner you do it the sooner you get paid and the sooner I can rest easy."

Despite her companion's eagerness to get going, Fran takes her time eating. "Do not worry, ma'am, we will find your ring before we mention this affair to the Guards." From the sound of her voice, it makes no doubt she intends to bring this matter to the local authorities once the lady has access to her vault.
"Before we go and while we eat, however, I would like to hear more about this brute, Soller Vark, and what you gave him. In what did you put the fines? Did he accept them personally? What does he look like?"
"As for this signet, does it have your house's symbol on it? If so, could we see it, so that we may readily identify it? What is our priority: giving you access to the vault or uncovering the harbor's illegal activities?"

"I gave Vark a leather purse containing 100 platinum pieces. In retrospect, I was foolish to give it directly to him without a witness. He claims he never received it, but I personally gave him the payment with my own hands.
Vark himself is... not a handsome man. He's bald, with brown eyes, and bad teeth. He has a jagged scar running down his right arm. He usually walks around in his sleeveless studded leather jerkin. If you've met him before, you could identify him by smell alone."
Lavinia grimaces at the thought, wrinkling her nose.
"I'm not sure whether my ring or the payment are still on that boat. Any criminal activities they're up to are a secondary concern to me; your priority should be determining where my money is, and if possible, the ring as well."

Trembling from trying to control herself, she releases all the tension in a quick strike at her food, which becomes impaled on the fork. Finally calm and cool enough to formulate a coherent thought, she clears her throat (not for attention. just so she doesn't sound stupid when she talks)

Part Two: Trouble on the Blue Nixie
You finish eating dinner, which consists of a lovely main course of roasted chicken and pears, mashed potatoes, and rice, and a dessert of strawberries and chilled cream.
Lavinia wishes you all a good evening, and to return to her with news of her money and ring as soon as you are able.
You all consult each other as you leave the manor grounds, and decide that decisive action now will likely take Vark and his cronies by surprise.
You give each other an hour to prepare yourselves and gather your things, and decide to meet at the dock where the Blue Nixie is moored.
By the time you all gather, the sun is set. A warm breeze blows in from the ocean, and the waves lap lazily against the barnacle-covered beams of the various docks and peers that dot the western Merchant's district. Street lamps light the way as you come to the dock Lavinia mentioned.
Something is amiss, however; the boat is not here. As you take a look around, you notice the dark shape of a caravel about 100 feet or so away from the dock: it would seem the Blue Nixie is anchored out in the water. You can see a few lamps burning on the main deck, and the flicker of torch or candlelight in a few of the windows built into the hull, most notably the captain's quarters.

Turok goes tromping around the other docks, looking for a suitable vessel. He doesn't know enough about boat operation to bother with some of the larger fishing boats, but it doesn't take him long before he stumbles upon a filthy man with a simple garbage barge: little more than a crude raft, complete with several piles of refuse. The smell is quite unpleasant, but doesn't bother the minotaur very much.
The apparent owner has his back to Turok. He fiddles around with a net, shaking out wet filth onto one of the piles. He turns around, sees the hulking brute before him, and lets out a yelp of surprise.
After a moment, the man leans forward, squinting. "Say... you wouldn't happen ta be the Young Bull, would'ja? Well, bless me bones! Aren't many bull-folk in Sasserine, it's gotta be you! I'ma big fan!"

Mr. Kreel bobs his head eagerly as everyone arrives. He lets loose a low whistle.
"Man... I wouldn't want to be whoever's on that boat right now. Heh. The Young Bull here said to take you over to the Nixie, an that's what I'm gonna do. 'Course, I'll shove off once yer there. Ye can take one'o the life boats back ta shore easy as pie. Whelp, are ye ready? Ye get used to th'smell after a few minutes."
You all get onboard the rickety raft, carefully placing your feet in the cleaner spots available. Kreel starts off poling the raft through the shallower water, but once things get deeper, he switches to a simple oar. The going is slow, but the raft is quiet. Combined with the darkness, and the lights from the lanterns on the deck, it's unlikely any sentries will see you.
After a few minutes, Kreel brings the raft next to the hull. A few slimy ropes dangle off the side. Kreel crouches down and whispers, "Welp, this is where ye get off. Good luck, folks. Can't wait to tell my friends I met the Young Bull! See ya in the arena!"
(A DC 10 Climb check will get you on the deck. I'll also need Move Silently checks.)

Tii arrives on the scene barefoot, clad in sturdy, studded leather that covers her entire body but for her head, hands, and feet. In one webbed hand, she carries a long, study shaft tipped with a large axe-head with a hooked end on the back and a driving spike on the tip.
As the rest of the group moves along to the garbage-ship, she grimaces a bit, taking a seat on the dock. "I think I will be able to make my own way. Thank you for your offer, however." She said, squinting off at the distant ship as it bobbed in the water.

As the rest of the group pushed off in the garbage raft, she paddled along just under the surface near them, the dark night helping conceal her. As they arrived at the ropes, she quickly grabbed onto one and began to hoist herself out of the water, slowly and carefully, being sure not to slip.

Perhaps it is inevitable, but with that many people clambering up the sides of the hull, you make a great deal of noise.
However, as everyone but Fran manages to find purchase on the deck of the Blue Nixie, you spot two sentries posted, and they seem to not really have noticed you. One of them is up on the forecastle, while another is on the main deck. They are clad in simple leather armor, with cutlasses on their belts and crossbows in their hands. The one on the main deck turns around, his eyes-half asleep, but they instantly pop open as he spots four heavily armed intruders climbing over the railing. You all have a few precious seconds to act, as it seems the element of surprise is yours...
(Believe it or not, but these two poor bastards rolled even worse on their Listen checks than you did on your Move Silenlty checks. Everyone has a surprise round, that is, a single move or standard action (or a partial charge...) before we join full initiative order.)

or in this case...crimson
She positions herself for her next move as best she can; she's ready, but she hopes these folks aren't. When she notices the look of surprise and the subsequent determination on the guards face as his hands tighten on the crossbow, she acts as quickly as possible. She rushes towards him, reckless and desperate to end this before it starts. Cecilia knows where situations like this can go- how truly ugly they can turn. The cut of that jib she cannot abide. Without regard for her own safety in the matter, she hurls herself at the close sentry. As she reaches him, she stops in a wide, low stance, sliding a bit on the deck towards him to end her move. Her blade sails briskly through the air in an arc upward, as she attempts to slash his throat from below. She feels the blade connect, sees the blood, and knows that her opponent is not long for this world. However, she doesn't know whether or not he'll remain standing long enough to hit back.

Seizing the initiative, Cecilia boldly charges forward, cutlass in hand. She gives the bewildered sentry a fine gash up his left arm. Before the man even has the time to scream, Turok lumbers up and splits the guard from shoulder to hip. He collapses on the deck a bloody mess, his life's blood staining the boards a dark crimson.
The sentry up on the quarterdeck turns a shade of white reserved for ghosts. He stamps on the deck beneath his feet.
"VARK! VARK! WE'VE GOT COMPANY!"
He aims his crossbow and fires, his bolt hitting Turok square in the left shoulder. However, the minotaur's thick hide makes the impact feel like little more than a mosquito's bite. As the man frantically reloads, his knees quiver with fear.
Kol reaches down and lends a hand to Fran. Working together, Kol manages to pull the wizard up off the barge. Kreel shoves off from astride the Nixie, cackling softly as he begins to paddle away.

Kol and Tiilaquiia move closer to the action as Fran draws her dagger, ready for combat. Cecilia deftly runs up the small staircase to the quarterdeck, where she delivers a slash with her cutlass as quick as a viper's bite. She draws blood from a thin gash on the sentries' thigh.
Turok charges the door beneath the quarterdeck, smashing it off its hinges with his sharpened horns. As he stands, looking into the gloom he sees a pair of bewildered thugs, blades in hand.
On the opposite end of the ship, a door slams open from the forecastle, as another thug emerges on deck, crossbow in hand. He tries to get a shot off at Fran, but trips on his own half-tied boot strings and fires the weapon into the deck. The man in front of Turok tries a half-hearted slash with his cutlass, but he barely cuts the air in front of the minotaur, let alone his armor or hide.
The guard on the quarterdeck drops his crossbow and leaps over the railing, splashing into the black water below, apparently possessing no intention of crossing swords with Cecilia.

Cecilia can't quite tell how to respond as the poor bastard makes his leap of faith off the deck. Half of her wants to smile triumphantly- though this isn't the first time someone has chickened out of a fight with her, the occasion is rare enough to warrant pride. However, she frowns because he might just get away. A small part of her hopes the gash on his leg will attract the attention of sharks, but she doesn't let that thought remain long.
Snapping back into reality, she heads downstairs again quickly, drawing her second cutlass, then hugging the wall as she comes next to Turok. Attempting to be as subtle as possible so that only he knows of her presence, It seems that my friend up top had to leave, but I thought I might come here to play with one of yours.

Fran waits patiently for Vark to show his ugly face, but it's unlikely he'll even get past the waiting minotaur...
Tiilaquiia moves up next to Turok, and shoves the spear end of her halberd through the doorframe, straight into the guts of the hapless man standing slack-jawed before the minotaur. He crumples onto the planks a bloody mess.
Kol, seeing Fran fighting by herself down the ship, moves up to assist her, getting right next to the crossbowman.
Cecilia leaps down the stairs and slips past Turok into the interior of the quarterdeck. As she does so, however, the other thug inside lashes out with an opportunistic slash of his scimitar. It is a particularly deadly strike, tearing straight through the intrepid girl's abdomen. She remains standing, but severely injured; if it were not for the strange magic radiating from the darfellan woman, she would surely be staggered and unable to fight. She lashes out with her own cutlass, slashing the goon across the brow and getting blood in his eyes.
Then, with the thudding, ponderous, inevitability of certain death, Turok ducks his head and steps into the gloom of the quarterdeck, already reeking of blood and carnage. His horns puncture through the man's shoulders, and his massive sword cleaves through flesh and bone, leaving him a lifeless wreck next to his dying comrade.
On the other end of the ship, the terrified lone crossbowman drops his weapon, and attempts to flee. Kol makes a swing with his makeshift club, but the man is too quick: he jumps over the side of the boat, and begins to swim away as fast as he can.
Meanwhile, inside the quarterdeck, the door to the captain's cabin slams open. A woman, scimitar in hand, and bodice half-laced, looks out only to see the carnage and horror wreaked by the invaders. She lets out a scream. She is followed by a bald, cruel-looking man with a scar running down his arm: no doubt Soller Vark. He clutches a finely-made rapier in his hands. He glances down at his dead cronies, and looks over his shoulder to the bewildered woman.
"Nine hells be damned! We're done for! QUICK BURN IT ALL! I'll get us out of here, sweetling. Make way!"
Vark charges forward, attempting to push Turok out of the way in a bid for freedom. Turok makes a half-hearted, mostly amused swing at the man, leaving a fine gash up his thigh. For his part, Vark slams against the minotaur, but Turok does not yield. Vark merely bumps off his mountainous bulk. He has turned pale as a sheet, and his lip begins to quiver.
From down below the deck, you begin to smell smoke, and a riot of sound begins to erupt from the hold. The shrieks of animals can be heard: birds squawking, monkeys hooting, and what might be a howling jaguar…

Cecilia can feel her wounds slowly beginning to knit themselves back together. In retaliation, she lashes out with her cutlass, giving Vark a new future scar on his left bicep.
Somehow, Vark manages to dodge the minotaur's lethal attacks; he obviously has slightly more skill than the rest of his cronies.
The woman in the captain's quarters, seeing how futile the battle has become, lifts up a chair and throws it through the rear windows of the room, shattering the glass with a great crash. "This way, honey bunny!" she says before leaping out of the window into the water below.
Vark licks his lips, his face turning into a sneer. "You can have this ship. I'm not getting paid enough for this!"
He turns around and ducks out of the room, too fast for Turok or Cecilia to stop him. He jumps out of the broken window. With a splash, you can hear Vark and his main squeeze swimming away through the dark waves.

With blind, mindless hunger, it chomps through the nearby cages and gorges itself on the other animals, emitting the strange keening sound all the while. The corpse of a human woman lays half-eaten and savaged nearby, no doubt the person who started the fire. The flames are yet small, and would probably be pretty easy to extinguish. However, the ravenous creature looks towards you with glistening, hungry eyes, and clacks its mandible in anticipation...

Then, with a quick sweep and a yank, she grips the hooked point on the reverse side of her halberd around his ankle and yanks hard, pushing on his chest to send him spilling to the ground, immediately putting the spear-point directly over his head. "Scumbag. Now, you best not move." she added, internally retching at having to even suggest such a thing to this filth, casting a glance over to his companion of the evening. "As for you, you can do whatever you want. I'll make sure you get tonight's fee out of him, though." she added.

"Get away from him you BITCH!"
She steps forward, slashing Tii across the shoulder. Her draconic magic takes the worst of the sting off. Vark rolls slightly to the side, just dodging away from the blade of the darfellan's halberd. He stands, his sword drawn, getting into a flanking position with his lady friend.
"Wrong move, sweetheart."

Tiilaquiia's blade and teeth make short work of the woman. As she turns around, the taste of human blood in her mouth, she sees... the backside of Soller Vark, running as fast as he can, down the docks and out of sight.

She then dove into the water, swimming back for the Nixie, wiping the blood off the blade as she swam.

Fran's spell strikes true. The keening, many-limbed monstrosity seems to sag visibly as its strength is sapped by the necromantic energies.
Kol moves forward, heedless of the danger, and slams his bucket down on the fire, trying to cut off its supply of oxygen. He also stamps and swats at the remaining open flames. It would seem the dead woman was not very good at starting fires, as Kol manages to all but completely extinguish it. The Blue Nixie is safe, but the party is far from it...
Turok moves past the beast, but in the cramped confines of the hold, he can't get a good angle with his sword. He hits only the planks beneath his hooves.
Cecilia has better luck. Her scimitar cuts right at the segmented joint of one of the creatures legs, spilling a runny, smelly ichor from the wound.
The creature, reacting to the biggest threat, lashes out with a barbed, sucking pedipalp. It latches onto Ceciilia's waist, and pulls her close. The creature's massive mandibles bite down into the meat of her thigh; though the wound is painful, the size of the pincers implies that it should have been much more damaging: Fran's spell is doing its job.

You give a cursory search of the remainder of the ship, only to find very ship-like things of little interest within: supplies, barrels, crates, etc. etc.
Tii, following Vark's directions, finds the secret compartment in the captain's quarters easily enough. Inside are two things: a small sack that jingles with the weight of the platinum coins within, and a small parchment envelope.
A quick glance at the coins suggests that they are Lavinia's missing payment. The envelope contains two items: a signet ring with an eight pointed star device, and a small note.

It is late in the evening by the time you are done with your business on the Blue Nixie. You figure it is best to wait until daylight to inform Lavinia of the good news.
The following morning, Fran informs the Sasserine city watch of the status of Lavinia's boat, and they agree to investigate the strange animals in the hold as soon as they receive word from the owner and the harbormaster. It would appear there's a mess of legal and bureaucratic steps they have to take before they can actually do anything.
It would seem word of a fight or struggle down at the docks last night has not spread very far. Hopefully, this means none of you will be accused of assault or murder, though it might be best to keep your distance from that section of the Mercantile district for a little while.
Before you separated to rest, you all agreed to meet up at Vanderboren manor sometime around noon. After resting and taking care of whatever business needed doing, you meet at the manor and are allowed in by the halfling servant woman Kora. She leads you to a sitting parlor where Lavinia is waiting. She smiles brightly as you enter. Although we could not catch him, his name was given to the authorities. He seems to have used your ship as a hide for exotic animals, and I believe the matter will be investigated shortly."

Part Two: The Vanderboren Vault
Lavinia hires a coach to take you to the Noble's district, where the ferry takes you over to Castle Teraknian. It is a sunny, muggy, typical Sasserine afternoon. The coolness inside the castle's stone walls is a welcome relief.
You are greeted within by the castle's steward. Upon confirming Lavinia's identity, he leads you down a spiral staircase into the dungeons beneath the earth. You find yourself surrounded by numerous doors, above each of which can be seen various crests of Sasserine's noble houses. The steward leaves Lavinia with a simple oil lamp.
Lavinia produces her magic signet ring, and places it on the door with her family's crest. The stone door glows blue for the briefest of moments before sliding into the floor.
Inside is a simple chamber, the only decorations being several pillars: four in each corner, and two along the wall opposite the entryway. The pillars have carvings of snakes winding their way around them.
Lavinia enters, and places a hand on her hip.
"Well, here we are. No doubt there's security measures even within. There must be some sort of hidden entryway somewhere around here..."
She begins pacing around, squinting at the pillars and walls...
After a bit of Searching...
It doesn't take too terribly long before you stumble upon a hidden switch. Upon pulling it, one of the pillars opposite the entryway slides into the floor, the snakes coiling around it seeming to animate and 'slither' out of the way. Beyond is a dark little room. By the light of Lavinia's lamp, you can see the twinkling of what might be gems against the walls.
Turok leads the way inside. Ever alert, the minotaur spots something out of the corner of his eye: slithering down from an alcove just above the entrance, what appears to be a silver cobra made of metal approaches quickly. Beautifully carved and molded, the cobra opens up its neck fan and bares needle-sharp fangs. Its two gem-like eyes glow an eerie green as it darts in to attack.

Combat Begins...
Seizing the initiative, Turok brings his sword down hard on the construct cobra, putting extra force behind the blow at the expense of accuracy. His gambit pays off, and his sword heavily dents the cobra's silvery scales.
Kol delays, saving his magical strength for any emergencies. Tiilaquiia moves into position, moving around the pillar and cornering the iron cobra. She activates her draconic magic, reinforcing her allies' defenses.
A good thing too, as the cobra lashes out at Turok, biting the minotaur in the leg. The wound is lessened by the subtle toughening projected by the darfellan, and Turok manages to ignore the worst of it with a stoic grunt.
Darting just around the corner, Cecilia manages to strike the cobra with her cutlass, but she lacks the minotaur's brute strength, barely leaving a scratch on the intricate construct...

She squeezes past Turok, and holds her signet ring out.

At the sight of the ring, the iron cobra folds its hood down, closes its mouth, and slithers back up the pillar, becoming motionless once more.
"Good thinking, Fran. I wouldn't have thought of that. Though it looked like Turok would have had the thing destroyed soon enough... what a fascinating thing..."
With things settled down somewhat, you are able to better take in the surroundings of this chamber.
This octagonal room is supported by a single large pillar with dozens of deep grooves along its sides. The seven walls of this room each bear fantastically detailed bas-relief carvings of exotic monsters in threatening poses. Starting at the wall immediately to the west of the entrance to the room and moving clockwise, the carvings depict a tentacled monster with a glaring red eye and a mouth full of teeth, a looming dragon, a fish-like creature with three eyes and four tentacles, a two-headed giant wielding a pair of immense clubs, a spherical creature with four eyestalks and a bulging central eye over a drooling maw, a gorilla-like beast with a fanged maw and six eyes, and finally a towering black spider with seven eyes.
Each monster's eyes consist of glittering red stones. The ceiling above is only ten feet high, with the now-familiar eight-pointed star pattern radiating out from the grooved pillar. The arms of this star are black, save for the one pointing south toward the entrance, which is red.

When the cobra retreats at the sight of Lady Lavinia's ring, Fran's smiles split into a large, victorious smile. "Turok is strong, true, but why use brawns when you have brains? And now... what do we have here?"
She inspects each of the figure, frustrated that she cannot identify all of them. Her knowledge was still imperfect, but knowledge was the key to everything. Still, she knew she'd have to deal with what was before her.
"All of these creatures have a different number of eyes. The first, here, has one." She points the one-eyed creature, directly west of the entrance. "From there, you had one with each carving, up to the odd spider with seven eyes."
She reaches into her pocket and removes the perfectly folded note, reading it out loud once more.
"Chimera looks to sunrise
Cyclops looks to sunset
Medusa looks to sunrise
Umber Hulk looks to sunset
Basilisk looks to sunrise."

Turok begins to feel a little woozy, as the fiery poison continues to course through his veins...
Noticing this, Lavinia approaches the minotaur.
"Hold on a second, that bite looks bad..."

Fran pauses, and you have to wonder if she isn't doing it for the dramatic effect. "When you turn something around its axis, however, there can only be two directions! Clockwise. Counterclockwise."
"I am standing under what, I believe, is the South. From here, sunrise - East - is to my right: counterclockwise. Thus, sunset - west - will be on my left: clockwise."
"The Chimera looks to sunrise, and it has six eyes..." She turns the pillar six time, counterclockwise.

"I think you're on the right track, Fran. It makes sense to me. Maybe you got the medusa wrong? The monsters in here only go up to seven eyes. Maybe that's the maximum valid turn?"

"Maybe?" Fran turns to Lavinia, frustrated that her 'perfect' solution did not work. She crosses her arm. "Maybe you are right. I have to ask, however, how come you do not know for certain. Is this not your vault? How can something as important as the secret to its treasures be lost?"
She brandished the riddle's note. "You did not even know the riddle existed! Is it custom among the Vanderboren to be so careless?"
Did I say Fran is easily irritated? And that she always has a lot of questions? Now I did. Just for the fun of it, my Sense Motive is at +7, and I would like to monitor her answer.

Lavinia goes wide-eyed. She stammers a bit, and blushes.
"I... I am only 21 years old. I've never been down to the vault."
Her meekness quickly fades as she reddens further. Her tone grows considerably more cold.
"I appreciate what you've done for me so far, but I would also appreciate it if you would not make assumptions as to what I do or do not know. I've never been down here; I've never even left Sasserine. My late parents traveled all over the world, and took precautions that they never had the time to explain to me, on account of their untimely demise. I'm not paying you to belittle me, Miss Fran."
With tears welling up in her eyes, she storms off into the main entrance to the vault.

The hobgoblin stands up, rolling his eyes at Fran in a look that clearly says "Now look what you've done," and walks after Lavinia. When he catches up to her, he is again at a loss for words. He considers giving her a hug, then realizes that, from a hobgoblin, it might be less than helpful. He settles for awkwardly patting her shoulder, providing a moment of near-human contact in this barren place.
"There, there, miss," he says, awkward-as-can-be. "There, there."

More clicking and grinding emanates from the pillar, but seven turns for the medusa part of the combination yields no better results.
Lavinia seems to be quickly regaining her composure. She nods at Kol, still blushing prettily. "Thank you... I'm sorry, I... still haven't had time to mourn. There's been so much to do... Hopefully, once we get this vault open, I can finally take some time for myself."

Fran watches Lavinia storm off without moving, taken aback by the violent reaction. She considers saying something, but everything that comes to her mind would most likely make the matter worse. I guess she can't be blame if her parents are careless.
Leaving the Lady to Kol, Fran turns her attention to Turok and the pillar. "If this doesn't work, try turning the pillar counterclockwise until it blocks when you're at the Medusa. Stop if it takes more than four full circles. I doubt it'd be that much either way."

Fran watches Turok turn the pillar expectantly, waiting for a marvellous click that would announce victory. When nothing comes, she lets out a frustrated cry. "I'll find it. I swear, I will!"
She glances back at where Lady Lavinia disappeared. You pay me to think, Lady, and that's what I'm doing. Keeping back a sigh, she re-examined the room. "Perhaps we've been looking at it the wrong way. It made sense for the spider to be 'seven', since it followed four, five, six and all the others..."
She walked to the spider. "But we all know spiders have eight eyes. Something must be missing on it."

There are no missing spots or indentations on the spider's head, or anywhere else on its body. It looks like it was designed specifically with seven eyes in mind. Perhaps the original architect of the vault's design couldn't think of any creature that had seven eyes naturally, if indeed the eyes are as important as they appear to be.

The hulking minotaur stands holding the pillar, talking out loud.
"How many eyes does a medusa have? Many, or only two?"

Perhaps the medusa was thrown into the clues to trick people, or perhaps you were thinking about it too hard. Turok tries the combination with medusa standing in for '2', and low and behold, the section of wall opposite the entrance slides into the ground with a soft mechanical grinding. At the sound, Lavinia returns, her face looking much more hopeful.
"Ah! Fantastic! Thank you all so much. I probably would have been here all afternoon if it weren't for you. If you'll follow me, you'll receive your payment."
There are several chests and coffers inside the hidden vault. Lavinia opens up the first one... only to find it empty. Puzzled, she opens the next chest: it too is all but empty. Growing increasingly panicked, Lavinia throws open just about every chest in the room, to find them all empty, save for a few coins. Pale as a sheet, she opens the last chest, and breathes a sigh of relief to find it still containing treasure. Stuffed with small sacks, each bearing the Vanderboren crest, she removes a sack and counts out the coins within.
"I... I don't understand. Why are all these chests empty? I thought I would have thousands of gold to fall back on... Well, here's your payment. Again, thanks for helping me... but it doesn't look like my situation has gotten much better..."
You each receive a sack containing 200 gold pieces.
Lavinia finds a small leather-bound ledger tucked away in the back of the good chest. She dusts it off and starts thumbing through it.
"Hm. These seem to be records of debts and I.O.U's to my family. These, combined with the gold, should keep me afloat for a good while longer."
She breathes a great sigh of relief, but she is still quite clearly troubled.

"It's... possible. Come with me, I need to ask the steward something."
You make your way up the spiral staircase to the surface once more. Lavinia seeks out the castle's steward.
"Excuse me, but has anyone else been down to my family's vault recently?"
Without batting an eye, the old man responds, "Why yes. A young man... your brother Vanthus, I believe. He was here just last week." Upon seeing Lavinia's expression, the steward's brow furrows. "Is there something wrong, my lady? I thought you knew..."
Lavinia dismisses the steward, deep in thought.
"Thank you. Hm. Come with me, everyone."
Your young patron leads you back into the muggy afternoon sun. As you make your way to the ferry, Lavinia speaks to you, her voice deep with concern.
"This is very troubling news. My brother Vanthus, he... he disappeared several weeks ago, just after my parents died. I heard some rumors that he was in with a bad crowd. If he had access to the vault, he could have been taking money out for close to a month now... *sigh*

On the ferry ride back to the Noble's district, Lavinia tries to answer Fran's questions to the best of her ability.
"Vanthus and I were always close as children, since our parents were not around. About five years ago, we got into a bit of trouble involving a particularly complex prank involving several charm potions and a water tower in the Champion's district... Our parents decided it was time for us to grow up a little, and so we were separated. Vanthus was sent to work on a rice plantation, to help 'straighten him out' in my father's words, while I was sent to Thenalar Academy. When we returned, Vanthus was... changed. I personally believe Thenalar did a great deal to improve me, but Vanthus could only dwell on his bitterness.
He started sleeping all day, and at night he would go out with... associates of doubtful character, let's call them.
Then my parents died... They were on a celebratory cruise up the coastline on their newest boat... The Blood Rose, I believe it was called. Then, the ship burned down, with everyone on board. There were no survivors. Those sent to investigate found only burnt planks and sunken bones.
I remember one inquisitive from the Sasserine Watch thought the whole thing was suspicious. There shouldn't have been anything on that boat more flammable than a barrel or two of lantern oil. Some people thought foul play was afoot, but the investigations never went anywhere.
By this point, Vanthus had moved out of the manor. After our parents died, he moved back in for about a week, but he was even stranger than before. He was cynical, morbid, even violent. We got into several arguments. He was mostly outraged that he was not named the primary heir in my parents will. The estate went to me, while Vanthus only got a few thousand gold. During our last argument he... he struck me. I was more shocked than anything, and for a split second, I think he was too, but he quickly returned to his nasty, bitter self. He stormed off with his few belongings after that.
I had heard he was living with a lover in the Azure district, so that might be a decent place to start looking.
As to what Vanthus looks like, well, you've already seen him, in a way. He's depicted in the portrait above the fireplace in the private dining hall, where I first met you. I haven't seen him in a while, but I imagine he still has his beloved goatee and mustache.
I don't think you need to worry about him as far as physical danger is concerned. He was never much of an athlete or fighter, and he had no talent for magic. He's clever, though. I'm surprised my parents never really recognized just how intelligent he was. Or maybe they did..."
She trails off at the end, clearly quite troubled.

Fran will give Lady Lavinia time to answer before asking one last thing. "I just want to make sure I have this right. After your parents' death, you saw your brother for a week. He was volatile, violent and bitter about the small amount he inherited. He left the manor after striking you, and you have had no contact since then."
She pauses, just for a moment, hesitating to press her point. "Lady, you once said that only two rings granted access to the Vandenboren's Vault. We have found your father's, which means that the ring your brother used... is your mother's. Did she say how she lost it?"

Fran's questions furrow the lady's brow once more.
"I'm afraid I don't know anyone named Brissa Santos... I suppose Vanthus could have stolen my mother's ring. We never figured out how mother lost it, but that would be as good an explanation as any. The more I think about this, the more... concerned, I become. If you do find Vanthus, please, don't... don't hurt him. Maybe he's just in over his head. I think he needs help."

That evening, and even into the following morning, you all start asking questions and turning over metaphorical stones in search of any clues on the whereabouts of one Vanthus Vanderboren.
It seems no matter which district you go to, people seem to be ignorant of Vanthus, or uncertain of his location or recent activities. Many people still are under the impression that he lives at Vanderboren Manor. Others relate rumors or similar facts that you are already aware of; that he is shacked up with a harlot in the Azure district, that he associates with criminals, thugs, or worse...
Somewhat frustrated, you meet at Lavinia's house the following afternoon. It would seem your young patron has had a similar lack of progress. However, it's still early in the investigation, and she has hope that a clue will turn up soon.
As you all leave Vanderboren Manor, a young half-elven man can be seen leaning against the stone wall on the edge of the compound. He motions toward you, looking over his shoulder conspiratorially. He has sandy blond hair, green eyes, and is clad in a simple suit of leather armor. A dagger is strapped to his belt, apparently his only weapon. He whispers to you in a low voice.

At least I'm an honest man, tryin' to make a few extra coins! You're a disgrace to professionals and honest folk in this city, you are!"
Rosk's coin purse is easy enough to find. Inside are the three gold coins you gave him earlier, as well as one more, apparently from the previous sum you gave him, for a total of 4 gold. Aside from the dagger on his belt, he doesn't seem to have anything else of value on him.

This isn't about the money. This is to teach you. You keep living like this, and someday, you're going to run into this exact situation, except the blade at you're throat won't be held by someone like me. It will be held by someone completely, unflinchingly evil, and your life will be over. Call this a wake-up call of sorts. Get out while you can, Shefton Rosk." "Well, uh... have a nice day, folks."
With that the half-elf takes off at a half-walk, half-run.
Turok finds a rope tied to a small iron ring just inside the lip of the shaft of the trapdoor. By the grace of his darkvision, he can see that the hole goes down a good thirty feet before reaching the bottom.
With the rope and walls of the shaft to brace against, it's a relatively easy climb down. The Young Bull finds himself in a cramped, claustrophobic, brick-lined room. A five foot wide hallway is the only exit, rounding a corner and out of sight. The ground is slightly damp, the air foul with staleness.

The hall beyond the door Turok destroyed branches to the left and right, ending in double doors that are slightly ajar. Nothing seems of terrible interest beyond, and the commotion behind you causes you all to return to the trap door.
There, you find a troubling sight: the rope, seemingly cut from above, coiled on the floor. The trapdoor is shut, and even the cracks in the wood seem blocked, so that only the tiniest hint of sunlight can filter through, as if something has been piled on top of the door above.
You realize with a certain sense of dread that you are trapped.

With few other options, you begin your exploration of the tunnels below Parrot Island.
Turok leads the way, peering through the double doors at the left of the first hallway.
Inside is a large cavern, supported by six stone pillars, that must have been the main staging area for whatever smuggling operations occurred here long ago. Many soggy wooden doors exit from this chamber, including two along the northern wall, one one on the western wall, and one on the eastern wall directly to the right of the double doors.
The ceiling in this chamber sags dangerously, and moist strands of pale fungus hang from the rafters. The southern half of the room has collapsed entirely. A small wooden pier may once have stood here, but it is little more than rotten wooden debris now. Swirling, surging water laps at the half-sunken dirt and cobblestones, and a swollen, bloated dead body of a man floats face-down in the pool.

With Kol's help distracting the already injured crab on Tii's leg, the darfellan is able to get a hold of it and bite the offending appendage attached to her flesh clean off. With a concentrated effort, Kol and Cecilia manage to knock off the last crab on Tiilaquiia's back. It falls to the floor dead, its shell cracked and several legs cut clean off.
With a snort, Turok explodes the last crab with his massive sword, which has now become stained with yellow-white crab guts. With the crabs dead, the sound of lapping water dominates the moldy room once more. The body of the dead man still bobs up and down in the water, soaked and bloated.
Tii ducks her head under the salty water and uses her echolocation to probe around. There seem to be minute cracks in the bottom of this pool that no doubt lead to the harbor outside, but they are too small for anyone present to squeeze through. She does sense something of interest, however: a small metallic anomaly. She dives under the water and resurfaces with the object in tow: a beautifully crafted dagger, the shining silver blade suggesting that it has been alchemically treated.
With Turok's help, Tii also drags the body out of the pool. It has been partially eaten by the crabs, especially around the legs and hands. However, a larger, more savage wound can be seen on the man's neck, as if it was torn out by a wild animal. The man is clad in ruined leather armor, and he has an empty scabbard on his belt. The only other thing of note about him is that he has two distinctive tattoos on his upper arms and shoulders. On one arm is a green dragon, its tail curling around his bicep. On the other is a white lotus flower. The tattoos have grown dark and smeared with blood and rot, but the body is seemingly fresh enough that they are still recognizable.

It is a relatively simple matter for Turok, Cecilia, and Tiilaquiia to hack the zombies to pieces as they cringe in fear.
The echoes of moaning and shuffling seem to die down a bit with the destruction of these zombies, but it sounds like there are more of them... somewhere. Also, you can swear you hear a rattling, dry, hateful voice joining the undead cacophony: "...Find them... Find them... Kill them..."

"Only one new set of doors here. Many in the other room. I say we see where this set goes."
Turok continues with is door-kicking and heads to the eastern set of doors.

Beyond the double doors lies a long, dark, dank hallway. It slowly rounds a corner to the right, into shadow. Directly to your right, along the southern wall, is another set of double doors, rotted and slightly ajar. The echoing of the zombie moans continues, making it hard to determine where the undead are; however, the distinct sound of water lapping against stone can be heard echoing from further down the hall.
Pressing Onwards...
You decide to head down the hallway. It proceeds for a few yards before ending at what might have once been the main entrance to the secret tunnels. The chamber's roof is partially collapsed, and the entire room is flooded with water. Barnacles and urchins can be seen stuck to the walls and floor.
However, Fran hears something odd amongst the noise made by the roving undead: she swears she hears the casting of a Shield of Faith spell.
Suddenly, the double doors behind you explode outwards, and a small group of undead emerge from the shadows, cutting off the exit.
Three zombie pirates moan, their jaws agape. However, just behind them, stands a different sort of creature. It appears to be an animated human skeleton, clad in a rusty chainmail hauberk. Pinpricks of glowing, baleful red light burn from its empty eye sockets. A golden holy symbol of Olidamarra can be seen dangling from a chain around its neck. Putting two and two together quickly, Fran assumes this creature must be a huecuva, a formerly living servant of the gods who was cursed to an eternity of undead suffering.
The skeleton points a bony digit at you, urging its zombie slaves onwards. Its voice is a parchment-dry whisper of a death-rattle. "Kill them... killll THEM!"

"Oh, THAT's not good," Kol curses, bringing his holy symbol up a third time. He has little confidence it will give the undead spellcaster even the slightest pause, but he knows well the effect it will have on the pirates.
He closes his eyes, pulling thoughts of the wind on the sea at night to his mind as he clears all thought from his head except the voice of Celestian. When he opens them again, his eyes and his holy symbol glow with holy light.
"Be not afraid; the starsailor watches over all seafarers, though they be landbound and cut off from the sky. He does not stand for misuse of his children's bodies. Therefore BEGONE!"

Turok can't get in range and attack this round, so for now he'll just move upwards, getting right next to the Huecuva, hopefully to interrupt some casting.

Tii grits her teeth and whirls about, her grip tightening on her halberd as the undead thing orders the attack and Kol pours out a wave of holy energy. She pushes forward, lunging for the thing, swinging her halberd in at a wide, sideways chop.

As Radiant Kol steps forward, fearless, his holy symbol shines with the light of the Heavens. All four of the undead abominations quail in terror.
Over the course of the next sixty seconds, the party pursues the fleeing undead through the abandoned tunnels. The slow-moving zombies are the first to fall, cut down by greatsword, cutlass, and halberd blades. You pursue the huecuva all the way to the crab room and beyond, where the skeletal undead has fled beyond the westernmost door. Beyond is a short, naturally-formed tunnel, which ends at a surging, water-logged passage. The huecuva, unwilling or unable to enter the water, cowers at the water's edge.
Turok repeatedly brings his sword down upon the cowering creature. It's bones have a freakish resistance to damage, but the minotaur focuses his muscles for power and damage over accuracy, and given the huecuva's defenseless cowering, before long he has battered the skeleton into powder.
The chambers echo now with only the sound of water. It would seem all of the undead have been destroyed, laid low by the power of Kol's divine inspiration.
You explore the unopened doors in the crab chamber, only to find cramped, dirty rooms filled with little more than junk. The huecuva's holy symbol, made of solid gold, might be worth some coin, however, so you take it.
The only place left to explore are the westernmost tidal caverns. Although Tiilaquiia could probably navigate the passage with ease, you decide to wait until low tide before pressing onwards.
At low tide, you carefully move through the slippery caverns. They are infested with spiny urchins, and slick with slime and sea weed. However, after a few hundred yards, you come to a small door. Turok bashes it down, to find a dry room that stinks of death. Laying on the floor in the middle of the tiny chamber is the bloated, stinking remains of a dead man. His flesh is black and purple, swollen with rot and fluids. His armor, while finely made, is covered in diseased filth. A dagger is strapped to one of his boots, and a gold ring can be seen stuck to one bloated finger. This body too has the remains of the dragon and lotus tattoos, just barely discernible as dark markings on the dead flesh. A crumpled piece of parchment is clutched in one hand.
Behind the dead man, at the opposite end of this small room, is another door.
The Note
Kol picks up the note, unfurls it, and reads it. It is in a blurry, sloppy hand, but not impossible to decipher.
These bones once be Penkus, so if ye read this, I be dead, laid low by the sick put on me by that foul dead thing! Yet even as me flesh wracks, know t'was not the dead what brought my doom, but one I 'til recently called friend!
Vanthus Vanderboren! Your name fills me with bile! Spineless, treacherous cur! You left us here to die. You left ME here to die, after all what I done t'get ye into th'Lotus! Yer designs on the Lady of the Lotus be clear now, and with meself out th'way… ye doubtless move even now into power, slithering amid my vacancy like a hermit crab in a shell, or a cadaver worm to still warm flesh. CURSE UPON YE!
To th'one what reads this: if ye have any honor or vengeance in yer soul, know that Vanthus must die. He dwells in the lap o'th'Lotus, below th'Taxidermist's Hall. Seek him there, but 'fore he dies he must ken it were Penkus what undid him and guides your killing blow.
And if, by some cruel spite of fate, it be ye what read this, Vanthus, know with certainty I wait for ye in Hell, where I intend t'rival the Pit itself in your torment!
Beyond the door...
After stripping the dead body of 'Penkus,' you bash open the door behind him. Inside is a dry, dusty chamber. The only things of note within are three securely locked chests...
Opening the chests...
Without any lock picking skill or tools, you decide to force the chests open. It does not take Turok too terribly long to open the chests one by one with brute strength alone.
The first chest contains a sizable amount of copper and silver coins.
The second chest contains a dozen small bags. Ten of these bags are filled with gold coins, and two are filled with an assortment of pretty, small gems.
The third chest issues a shattering sound as it is forced open. Inside, you find several small vials, smashed by the force of the process of opening the chest. The contents of these vials are spilled all over the inside of the chest, various liquids of different colors and consistencies. However, two items of note seem to have survived: a small wooden wand, and a beautifully carved coffer made of jade. Inside this small coffer is a shiny brown stone resting on a velvet cushion. A small note tucked underneath the cushion reads "Earth Elemental Gem."

Part Five: The Lotus and the Dragon
It takes some effort, but you are able to haul your treasure out of the tunnels beneath Parrot Island and return to civilization. You all rest and recuperate, staying in close contact with each other as you appraise the loot and sell it. Before long you each have a small fortune in gold and silver at your disposal.
After your harrowing experiences underneath Parrot Island, you each feel stronger, wiser, and more ready to tackle the challenges that no doubt await you. Whether it's picking up some useful skills in 'security bypassing,' researching some new spells, growing closer to the gods or dragons that inspire you, or simply growing up a bit, you each become stronger in your own way.
Cecilia, with an ear always open to the rumors circulating through the city, believes that Vanthus and Penkus must have been involved with the Lotus Dragon thieves' guild. With this knowledge in mind, Tiilaquiia decides to do some digging of her own.
She hears much the same things that Cecilia told her: that the Lotus Dragons are the rising star of the underworld, that soon they will dominate organized crime in Sasserine. Rumor has it they are much better organized than previous guilds, and some even suggest that some wealthy patron or noble house must be funding them, so well-equipped and wealthy they already seem to be.
You decide to meet with Lavinia three days after your escape from Parrot Island. On the way there, Tii discovers a mysterious note in her pocket, that she did not remember taking or placing there in the first place. Somewhat unnerved, she unfurls the crumpled bit of parchment and reads it:
You are being watched by the Lotus Dragon. Your questions will only bring you misery. It's best to sit back and let things happen as they will. Further interference will only bring you tears.
Obviously, a skilled pickpocket must have slipped it in Tii's pocket when she wasn't looking.
Finding yourselves once again at Vanderboren manor, Lavinia greets you all cheerfully and invites you inside for tea and biscuits.
"So, have you found out anything about Vanthus? Do you know where he is?"

Cecilia frowns a bit. Well, we have somewhat of an idea, but the news isn't good. If our investigation's results are accurate, he has become highly involved with a group known as the Lotus Dragons. She proceeds to relay their findings in an usually serious tone. Provided the note Tii found was made known to the rest of the group, Cecilia mentions it as a sign to proceed with caution. But of course we aren't giving up, Lady Lavinia. I for one am definitely going to see this through to the end so you can get your life back. She finally regains her smile before saying and besides...I ain't scared o' no Lotus Roots with her trademark smirk and her best ruffian impersonation.

Lavinia furrows her brow, deep in thought as you tell the tale of your harrowing encounter underneath Parrot Island.
"Hmm... No doubt these are dangerous people, these Lotus Dragons. I'd advise you to be cautious, but if you were able to survive that devious trap, I'm sure you can handle yourselves should you get into any more trouble.
It seems we're finally on the trail of my brother, though. We've got some leads... what about the Taxidermist's guildhall? Penkus mentioned it in his note. It's in the Sunrise District, near Dead Dog Plaza. There might be clues there. Just... be careful. I know Vanthus is up to no good, but... again, if you find him, please, don't kill him. He needs to pay for his crimes, yes, but I think that if my brother is still there, he can be brought back to the side of kindness and good."

"Live and whole, until he receives proper judgement. You have my word." She gives the lady a slight bow. "Before we investigate the Taxidermists' halls, however, I believe it might pay if we found our friend Shefton... He owes me one, and knows more than he told us."

Turok
Upon reentering the manor, Turok seems more at ease than his first arrival. He nods politely to both the Lady and the halfling servant. He does his best to hold his special mug with the tea, though it is easy to tell that he doesn't care for the taste.
"Taxidermist? What is that?"

Lavinia puts on a distasteful expression as she answers Turok's question.
"Taxidermists... they mount and stuff dead animals. I'm not too terribly fond of taxidermy, to be perfectly honest... though my late father had a taste for it. If you'd like to see some of his collection, you're more than welcome to, at least, the pieces I haven't already sold or thrown away.
Well, it seems like you have enough clues and leads to continue your investigation. I'll keep my eyes open as well, but if you learn anything else, do feel free to stop by."
The Investigation Continues...
After some consultation among yourselves, you decide the next best course of action would be to investigate the Taxidermist's guild hall. Shefton could be anywhere; if he's still in town, he'll probably show up eventually. In the meantime, you decide to waste less time and pursue the more concrete leads.
Many of you have purchased better equipment, and feeling more confident in skill and power, you proceed to the Sunrise District with a certain amount of determination.
As you get closer to Dead Dog Plaza, the crowd begins to thicken. Suddenly, Cecilia feels something near her hip: she catches a filthy young boy out of the corner of her eye. The glint of gold disappears down his pocket. The pickpocket steals a backward glance before darting down a cramped alley between two buildings in a state of disrepair.
(Cecilia just got 3 gold stolen from her. Everyone notices this development as soon as the thief makes a break for the alley. Everyone is free to make a Sense Motive check, and otherwise react as they will.)

GIVE ME BACK THAT GOLD! Cecilia shouts while making no attempt to hide her wide grin. She moves at a moderate gait*, almost playfully loping towards the thief's exit; she's clearly excited.
