Welcome to the 32nd ABR Discussion Thread!
The 31st can be found here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140377)

Because we used to burn through new ABR threads so quickly, we created the Discussion thread. All banter goes here, and all comics and non-canon kills go in the main thread. (see line below)

Avatar Battle Royale: Avatarmageddon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7000298) is the current thread. Post artwork there.

The ABR backup thread (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Remember/index.php?showtopic=161), is used in the event of Giantitp becoming untenable due to server issues or otherwise.

Be sure to visit the ABR IRC channel at irc://dalnet/AvatarBattleRoyale.
Visit the ABR IRC Channel if you wish to hear us talk about boobs and watch Tiffanie kick Victernus out of the chatroom over and over.

Random curiosity question is random.

Been looking through the FI comics in the art thread out of boredom. Having some difficulties figuring out where everyone is. I noticed one or two people are in Merinas. (Skimmer and what I assume to be Kumo's characters)

But I'm not really sure about everyone else.

( I haven't been following the threads. Sue me)

Actually, one of those Qs (the green-shirted one) has joined the others on the Citadel. The comics I showed where he was in Skornbail with other Q take place before the rest of the dudes leave for Merinas.

Also, Fin, The backstory comic Endless is no longer active. Just thought I should let you know so you can change it.

Protestation. I was not lazy, but there really isn't any way for me to see there's a new thread unless somebody tells me. I always provide a link if I see the thread (before the genius change in thread creation, that was fairly common), it seems fair for others to do the same. Or at least mention it.

About the Special Tactics Peacekeepers argument, even though Darklord Bright took the words right out of my mouth, I just want to say that I when I first created them, I never wanted them to be unbeatable god-killing machines or anything of that sort, but rather a force that proves a challenge to the main characters.

When the ALF PCs* encounter them, they should not be simple mooks to be swatted like flies, but worthy opponents that necessitate wits, cunning, hard work and sometimes just pure luck to bring down, hopefully making the PCs look like "badasses" at the same time (just like in Threeshades' excellent comics, which I find to be one of the greatest scenes as of yet in FI). In brief, STPs are not invincible gods of war, but they're not cannon fodder either.

And just like their names say, they should use tactics other than simply running in a straight line and shooting at people. Ambushes, flanking, grenades, chemical weapons and retreats are all part of their arsenal.

Certainly. And if I know of a new thread, as I did a few minutes ago, then that's all well and good. But we went at least a day before the new thread came up. Am I supposed to be refreshing every few minutes during that time? I could, but I think it seems to make more sense for somebody to just post on the old thread alerting everyone to the presence of a new one. Not even a link is necessary. It's just quicker for all involved, and takes about 10 seconds.

Unfortunately, new threads need time for moderator approval. Until it gets that there is no thread to which I can provide a link. I was offline when this one got it and you all seem to have found it just fine without me.

Sweet of you to notice, to be honest I have been knocking about the Playground for... *checks* wow, nearly three years. I briefly surveyed ABR when FI was still mostly an idea in Mask's head then had to cool off my time here due to life commitments, but I am back in a full capacity now and that fact has no plans on changing.

New FI up.

@Fin
Next one's for you to do, what the team would do next was to load Threeshades back onto Wolf-form-Gorb's (the Ogre) back, have Liz mount up on Gorb too to make sure TS doesn't fall off and the rest of them also would go to wolf form (complete wolf form, not hybrid) and then head back towards the citadel. You can put yourself in there wherever you like.

Here is a picture of all 5 of the wolves in each of their forms, and with their weapons:

So the IRC has been fixed, we have op's again and all the shinie's are back in place.

On a more random, yet still ABR related note, I've been thinking about those werewolves. How do they work? I assume they can shapeshift whenever they want?

Is it a disease? A form of magic? Does the moon play any role in their wearwolf'ness? Why did it take so long for Werewolves to be introduced to abr? Etc etc

So on a somewhat related and somewhat not related note. Kumo broke the IRC.* :smalltongue:

Go figure, we have ops again. Trying to make the best of a strange situation I tried to see if I could reactive auto-ops. But sadly the list is only available to Keris. (Who doesn't even use the IRC anymore, after "fixing" it. *cough*)

So I suppose it's only a temporary thing.

*Yes yes, I was kidding. It was probably just a normal error.

They are basically like DnD werewolves in their workings: In this gase we have 5 natural lycanthropes. They all can shapeshift between the three forms at will by day and night, independent of moon phases. They can afflict people with lycanthropy through biting, but they usually bite to kill because all of them are well aware that they might be causing civilian casualties if they allowed an afflicted werewolf to go home.

Afflicted versions also work like the DnD version, they can shapeshift at will once they know they are werewolves but if they do they become bloodthirsty monsters (or in DnD terms they become Chaotic Evil) and have no control over the beast they become, and they automatically shapeshift to one of the wolf versions at full moon, also out of control of their bodies.

I actually took the Pathfinder werewolf version to determine the way they work, so don't wonder if any of this is different from how werewolves in DnD usually work. (I havent really seen a 3e book since i got my Pathfinder books and our former GM took his 3e books back) The pathfinder Lycanthropy template allows any animal as base animal for a lycanthrope, so Gorbog is actually a Were-dire-wolf. (otherwise he would shift into something really small compared to his usual size)

I think somebody already has a werewolf in ABR (he's a crazy ALF guy, right?).
At any rate, my idea:
I think lycanthrope should be the result of the first attempted merging of magic vs. science (the first real merging, that is, a lot of more 'minor' attempts, like enchanting ships and stuff, don't count). A potion of beast shape was combined with a chemical designed to [doesn't really matter:smalltongue:], by a curious Lockutian mage. He first tested it out on his familiar. Seeing no adverse effects, he tried it himself.

Nothing happened.
Unfortunately, angry people with pitchforks assumed that the man was creating a 'werewolf' (which already existed in folklore), and killed him. The familiar, however, escaped, and complained to the Moon Elf Empire and asked for justice. Intrigued, a moon elf alchemist in the court suggested that the familiar's request be granted.

When a troop arrived in the village, they found the workshop had been burnt to the ground. But the mage had kept some of his work underground, so they investigated further. They found the man's notes.

The moon elf alchemist worked them out, and realized what the foolish mage had not: The man had come very close, completely by accident, to creating a new species, a merging of animal and humanoid. The elf worked further, and using his own magic, managed to complete the unfinished work. Using melted iron from a meteorite as the focus for the spell, he took blood from a rat and a human prisoner, and injected the formula into a third man (Basically, the first two for the man form and the rat form, and the last for the hybrid is how I see it). He succeeded in creating his goal--a wererat.

There were two problems, though. The first one: The iron was corrupted and impure. Therefore, the success was only partial, and the merging was imperfect. The second was, of course, that the experiment, in a rather cliche manner, killed him.

However, this wererat was actually very intelligent. He had killed his creator carefully, and calmly. Calculatingly. [Another synonym for carefully here]. He waited until his creator's notes were complete.

With his master dead, he endeavored to make more of his kind (the iron was expensive, but his master had a large supply). He made a great deal of wererats, and then decided to branch out. Werewolves, werevultures, even wereserpents (although reptiles didn't 'take' as well).

Eventually, the Empire wondered why the alchemist had gone missing, and investigated. Discovering what had happened, they attacked, and killed many of the abominations. They locked the details were nobody would find them. But a few escaped, and bred, and some remain to this day.

I decided that it would be wise to give some more information on the werewolves so we avoid mistakes:

About their biology: As I've said they are pretty much like DnD/Pathfinder werewolves, but what I forgot to add is that they have claws that can and do serve them as weapons.

Now on their personalities:

General: When talking to each other all of them use dog references sometimes. Orders and commands are often very similar to the commands you would teach a dog (such as "sit", "fetch" or - as you have seen - "sic 'em"), however if a non-werewolf would talk to them like that they feel offended. (It's similar to that black people and the "N" word cliché)

Neekah: She's very proud of being a werewolf, being a goblin she has a connection to wolves even from her humanoid side. Neekah always maintains a resolute manner and tries her best to assess any situation right and make the best of it for the team. She has a deep respect for Gerald and often turns to him for advice on combat situations. She empathically keeps the group working in harmony, as without her supervision squabbling would not be an uncommon sight amongst the team.
In her professionalism emotions usually fall flat and are usually buried inside her sometimes bursting out in desparation, especially when she realizes to have made terrible mistakes.

Gerald: Jerry of the whole team has the most combat experience. There are two reasons though why he is not team leader: 1, in his years at war he learned to establish close relationships with his teammates and hates the thought of being put above them in any way, 2, he is good at tactics due to his experience but Neekah is an even better tactician and manages to frequently choose methods without getting personal feelings involved. However sometimes experience is better than academic knowledge, this is why he often acts as a tactical advisor for Neekah.
Gerald is your typical grumpy old veteran, more often than not seeming very introverted and with a sadistic sense of humour, but he respects every single one of his teammates and would never treat any one of them as less than an equal and considers all of them close friends.

Eddie: Most of the time he is scatterbrained and seems sadistically psychotic. As a matter of fact he does have an affinity to killing, but he would never go over to pointless slaughter. If he kills, then it's in a fight, and if he fights then it's for a reason. His definition of fighting however also includes stealth attacks, such as backstabbing and throatcutting and that is what he is best at. Eddie usually has a short attention span but as soon as he is on a mission his mind suddenly switches and is focussed as a laser beam.
His connection to the rest of the team hardly goes beyond that the fact that they are all werewolves, but that is enough for him to go to any length for them. He knows just too well what it means to be a lycanthrope and that is why he would always help another one the best way he can.

Liy'zann: Little can the short lived races imagine of how the mind of this drow works. Liz can bring up amounts of patience that are simply impossible for maintain anything that has a shorter life span than an elf. She could sit and wait for weeks only to get a single target in front of her scope if she has to. And this seemingly unlimited patience is what brought her such a close relationship with the slow-minded Gorbog. Liz has learned much about him that the others never were able to take the time to learn (they would just give up after waiting half an hour for the ogre to answer a single question, or get angry with frustration which in turn would cause the ogre to get angry too, and being near an angry werewolf ogre is a thing you wouldn't want to do even if you're a werewolf yourself).
Liz is generally a warm and friendly person although her face rarely shows much emotion. She is ready to take care of her team mates well-being, both physical and mental at any time.

Gorbog: Gorbog is - and anyone who has ever seen him can confirm - very slow witted, he seems to be little more than brawn and hair, but despite his lack of sharp wit, he is not simple-minded, much to the contrary, he is very wise and always knows wrong from right. He is observant and incredibly hard to manipulate. His remarkable ability for reason however still can't stop him from easily getting angry, which usually happens more as a mode of defense than anything else. For example if someone around him shows anger he feels threatened and when he feels threatened or sees someone helpless being threatened or attacked he can turn into a raging berserker. No matter how strong his rage Gorbog always manages to stop before injuring someone he knows is innocent.
Gorbog has little relationship with the other team members, he likes them because they are friendly to him and the others like and value him, but that is as far as it goes, when it comes to Liy'zann however it is an entirely different story. The drow is the only team member who is able to understand him at all, and she can read him like a book and actively helps him understand her too. This is why he is especially protective of her, he takes care of her as if she were his baby sister. Liz and Gorb are unseparable and only a fool would dare to try.

Why would anyone give very expensive gold to a beggar child? The beggars' strategy seems to be a bit far-fetched, as the odds of a random passerby carrying gold in their pockets at night (or even at day) seem to be very low.

Um, is there any response to my idea?

Not a bad idea.
How about this: UNA coins are square-shaped for practicality. There are three major coins:
Hearts: Copper coins, worth two Crowns.
Crowns: Aluminum-based alloy, nicknamed 'gold' because of the color. Worth five Stars.
Stars: Slips of paper with a serial number on them. These are not true coins, but are very prominent, as the UNA uses them for most transactions. Their value remains low because a lot of people are hesitant to use such delicate--and flammable--money.

/\Ah, right. Dang. Guess I'll have to save this system for my homebrew...

Yes... but in D&D for example, the average peasant uses copper pieces, not gold. That's reserved for adventurers and nobles, and they certainly don't give them to children on the streets.

What do you mean by "joining the UNA"? Do you mean becoming a registered citizen, having a job, living in the house they give you? Do you mean joining the Peacekeepers? Do you mean joining the Navy? Do you mean trying to become a politician?

The UNA is an international organisation designed to ensure co-operation between nations, create world peace, promote sapient rights and eventually form a world government, with several diverse branches, not a club you can just "join".

Supernatural Studies has to do with investigating magical activities and attempting to broaden the ALF's influence through magic. Magical Inventions sounds like a part of Supernatural Studies. Or perhaps Keveak co-leads the department with Nilmerg. Nilmerg's focus would be research, and Keveak would in turn see what he could do with the information.

Right now, I'm imagining only about 10 people being in the Department of Supernatural Studies, not counting the leader/s.

Also whats Mary Sueing and yes you do know me from Our Comic Lab In The Playground

Another member! Quick, get him!
Kidding, of course. Welcome! A bit of advice:
1. As Kev said, don't godmod. You can control most characters without complaints, but if the characters are created by somebody else then show them respect and don't make any major decisions for them.

2. The plot's about everyone, so don't get hung up on how awesome you think your character is. I made that mistake once, and I still haven't lived it down.

3. No matter what everyone says, decent art makes a difference. If you use MS Paint (looks like you don't)expect to get slightly less respect. And... *continues self-victimizing*

4. Try not to introduce a whole separate subplot. Even in FFFR, this is frowned upon. You can feel free to introduce a subplot related to the main one, but bringing in a bunch of inter-planar neogi who oust the Sovice/pretty much ignore them is definitely something you should get permission for.

5. A new plot is difficult to maintain. Expect it to go in this order: Interest, super-fast comics, slowness, death. We've created about...a dozen plots, no exaggeration. Of those, one concluded, two are still running, and the rest are dead.

Above all, avoid the newts. Good luck! :smallcool:

EDIT: Ah, the plots. Well, take a look at the FFFR and FI archives. A lot of characters coming in? They pretty much jumped in. With FI, it's common to create a sort of 'character sheet' to briefly explain who your character is, but besides that, you can enter however you like.

Note, however, that the two plots are different. FFFR is silly and the plot is surreal. FI, however, is dark, and breaking the fourth wall/major rules references are basically not allowed. Humour is encouraged, of course, though a lot of it is grave humor.

That's how we've been doing since the dawn of ABR (before the plots even) plots are made for it

Mary Sue (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MarySue) If my knowledge is correct its a character who is perfect with no flaws and who never loses and always knew what the enemy was planning, etc.

In short it's a boring character who's creator can't stand there being anyone better than hir character.

Not quite. Actually, Mary Sues are just really feminine characters. Gary Stues are closer to the mark, being common owners of the 'badass' trope. Also, neither means the guy always wins, just that no matter whether they win or lose, they look cool doing it.

EDIT: Looks like there's some controversy. Here's the best thing I found:

The closest thing to a widely agreed-on definition is a character who has too many positive characteristics, and too few genuine flaws to be believable or interesting.

I thought about that but what I've been having trouble with is what plot to join, because it feels a bit like jumping right in someone elses story.

There are two plots who are currently running: Fat Fish Fury: Reboot, and Future Imperfect.

Fat Fish Fury: Reboot is, obviously, eponymous. It tells the story of a band of heroes, led by the humanoid penguin Kpenguin and the flying landfish Salmon, trying to find the Talisman of the Dragon King before the villains, and is generally a very light, silly, humour-centred story.

Future Imperfect is a continuation of the original Fat Fish Fury, taking place 15 years in the future. The world is now under the influence of the benevolent United Nations of Avbaroy, an international organisation that is slowly becoming a world government, founded by the extraterrestrial nano-mechanical Sovices and their human-formed leader, Ins.

The story involves the rebellious Avbaroy Liberation Front, who, thanks to their now-insane leader, Igon Minoblendy, believe that the UNA is not as good as it seems, as the Sovices have suspicious motives and a mysterious plan. The morality of both sides is not clear-cut, as the ALF is an unscrupulous terrorist organisation unafraid to slaughter thousands of innocents to achieve their aims, while the UNA appears ethical on the surface but deep down is full of conspiracies, assassinations, mercenaries and the Sovices' unknown master plan.

You can read some of the archive here (http://fi.thecomicseries.com/comics/1/). I'll update it soon.

Hopefully that'll clear some things up.

Mary Sue is a derogatory term primarily used in Fan Fic circles to describe a particular type of character. This much everyone can agree on. What that character type is, exactly, differs wildly from circle to circle, and often from person to person.

OK, so I thought I'd start of with a character, what do you think of this for FI:

His name would be Feevor(pronounced like a fever) McBird.
He would essentially be like a cleric, although be less purely healing based then a conventional cleric.
He wouldn't be a bit like a wizard more like a ranger or fighter.
He would be armed with a large wooden staff and be proficient with fighting with it.
I've designed two versions of what he would look like:
http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab238/licoot/FeevorMcBird.png?t=1271537183
I havn't decided which is better yet.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

EDIT: I just realized that its unclear what I meant, he would be like a slightly below average cleric who had multiclassed to fighter or ranger

Licoot, I forgot to add, Future Imperfect's technology level is about that of 19th/early 20th century (with zeppelins and coloured newsreel with sound, however), so that character would be kinda out of place... Especially since there is no "adventuring party" to stick around, and D&D rules have limited influence, being present mainly in magicians' spells, and even there it's but a loose guideline at best.

You're not constrained by D&D in FI, in fact there is no game system at all. You can remain with it if that's what you're comfortable with, but no-one is forcing you to. EDIT: Also I should remind you that any D&D healing spell, if facing a bullet wound, won't do much. You have to remove the bullet before applying any Cure X (or Heal) spell.

The UNA 'territory' is basically the entire world sans what's uninhabitable or unknown to them (e.g. Goldunscael, which haven't officially entered world politics for centuries) why would a peacekeeper think a terrorist stupid because he's there?

ALF is a resistance movement, not a faction. remember that.

Otherwise it's a pretty good comic, certainly better than mine were when I joined

Seems okay to me, just make gorbog a bit bigger, and he also is capable of using first person. His grammar and syntax are quite decent, its only vocabulary he really lacks.

As for the font size, use something from 12-14 that should do it. I use 10 but only because my comics sometimes tend to get wordy.

I thought it was just a really big crystal, not a crystal eye (in the newest comic featuring it it is larger than Lor Nae)

They presumably believe it to be in Merinas, as they're looking there and Lor Nae never seems to leave the country.

Think. Why would we need to search for it in her own necropolis? Especially if she has thousands of loyal minions that could find that stone in no time? Also, if you want peace with someone, you don't usually go and butcher all their troops in the process:smalltongue:

This is obviously a different town with different tower and different necromancer(?) inside....

The number should be increasing by now, as I'm uploading new comics.

They're in a different order than in the art thread, being in an easier-to-follow chronology. That's why it takes more time to update the archive, I have to wait for a series to have a significant amount of comics.

You know those comics about kid versions of characters in comics we already know? And how they make little references to how the characters became what they are now (a non-comic example is the Monk episode where they show Monk as a kid being told that he should carry 'wipes' around with him)? I can move them, duplicate and move the clones or copy and paste them anywhere I damn well please and the gradient stays with the object.

Only problem i ever have is when i copy and paste an object from another file more than once, the following copies won't have the gradient at all. Which is why I usually copy/paste something like a master copy from the template file and then copy or duplicate that one.

Make sure you have the selector tool selected, then maximize Inkscape. See the symbols on the far right of the top toolbar? Click on the third (I think.
