Are you like me? Do you feel that something is missing in your life, but you can't quite figure out what it is?

Well you've come to the right place! This thread is all about filling that need, that desire that we all have. There's no shame in it, folks! We all, from time to time, have an empty slot that we can't seem to fill.

Here the entire community can help you Fill. That. Slot!

~*~*~
I'm looking to create a list of everybodys favorite gear, from Amulets of Health to Wings of Flying. I'll be sorting it by body slot. Please help me out by posting your favorite gear, including price, what book its in, and what type of character it is best for (TWF'er, Tripper, Wizard/Caster, etc). I'll be keeping these tables up to date.

NOTE: Tables can be sorted by clicking on the header.

Don't forget the psychoactive skin slot!

As for that one, a psychoactive skin of proteus; useful for absolutely everyone that isn't VoP, though less so for a druid (all things considered).

Hands slot: a chakra-bound metamagic rod (+1 insight bonus to CL!). Casters only, obviously.

Head slot: a tie between headband of Int and a crown-bound shedu crown (100' telepathy!). [Mind-affecting], but useful to all classes for not-immune races.

Shoulders slot: A chakra-bound phase cloak (ethereality whenever you move more than 5'). Great Spectacular for scouts and mobile characters, as well as...well...just about anyone, I guess.

I'm unfamiliar with chakra-binding items. I guess I nee to go through my MoI a little better

However, yes, I do need to add an 'Other' table. Thanks for reminding me

I personally love the Artificer's Monocle. Combined with a warlock (Detect Magic at-will) and you can identify anything that comes your way for free. MIC for 1500 gp. good for any caster really

Are we including homebrewed items? If so, I made boots of continuous expeditious retreat. +30' enhancement to your base land speed all the time, gotta love it. 4000gp, good for anyone who wants to move faster

(My group is nowhere near the optimization level of some people on this forum. the most complex so far have been homebrewed vampires with a smaller LA)

Belt of Battle (MiC)
Wing Grafts (Fiendish, Fiend Folio, back of the book)
Ring Of Spell-holding
Glyph Seals (MiC)

When you have filled this out more, may I link to it from the test of spite? Item optimization is one of the main barriers to entry, in our experience.

Storing, yeah.
The wings are probably the game's single best movement item other than a FoM item, for which there's Ring of FoM or Vest of free movement (MiC pg 198).

OOh, tooth slot. Tome of Magic has a new magic item slot: teeth.
You have to pull a tooth out, but it is a extra magic item slot.
1) They grant the Dwarfs ability to move in Meduim/heavy armor without reduction (2k).
2) Caster 20 GMW 1/day (21K)
3) Freedom of movement 1/day (10K)
4) Displacement 1/day (5k)
5) G. Invis 1/day (10K)
6) Fly 1/day (5K)
7) Command undead 3/day (10K)
8) Lesser Restoration 3/day (10K)
9) Expenditous Retreat at will (9K)

This is something that no caster should be without: +X Mythril Breastplate with Twilight property, and Thistledown padding. Now I know what your going to say, nonproficiency penalties. If you're worried that much about your to-hit, just cast true strike.

Am I the only one who thinks both the title and the OP sound naughty?

At low to mid levels:

healing belt
anklet of translocation
hellcat gauntlets

And obviously:

ring of protection
cloak of resistance
items of +2/4/6 stat
amulet of natural armor

So, are the +stat items actually that good? I've always considered the Belt of Magnificence to be better then them, even with the marginal price increase.

And by price increase, I actually mean decrease for the +6 version.

Ring of the Darkhidden: Permanently invisible to darkvision. Combine with a casting of darklight for cantrip-greater invisibility and 2000 gp.

Another graft from the Fiend Folio is the Strong Leg. +2 inherent bonus to Con, for 8,000 gp and being evil.

How about a Wand of Rary's mnemonic enhancer? 150 spell-levels, whenever you want 'em.

It's not a magic item, but a Bullseye Lantern. Combine with pyrotechnics and blind your foes in a 120' cone without blinding your team.

Oh, and a Tinfoil Hat. And possibly shoes.

I still have nothing for the Arms slot (bracers and such) or the Torso slot (vests and robes, not armor).

A lot of the others only have 1.

So, if you were a level 10 wizard, what would you fill your arm slot with? A level 15 fighter looking for a face slot? Rogue with nothing in his head slot?

All suggestions appreciated!

Rings of Arcane Might and Spellbattle are both excellent (Complete Mage, 20,000 gp and 23,250 gp, respectively; the first is arcane-only, the second for any caster [actually, a non-spellcaster who can make a DC 15 Spellcraft check could also do well with one...])

Arms: Bracers of ArmorUgh. No. Those things are WAAAAAY overpriced, when a single 1st level pearl of power (1000 gp) can get you a much higher bonus for much much less.

DragoonWraith
2010-04-17, 10:50 PM
For Arcane Might, no, it's just a straight +1 Caster Level (for SR checks, CL checks, and level-based variables in the spell; not sure if there's any other function of Caster Level that it doesn't cover). For Spellbattle, part of it (recognizing any spell cast within 60 ft even if you can't see it) is continuous, part of it is 1/day (co-opting or countering said spell).

Also, this made me laugh for reals. Awesome.

If you want to use the arm slot, though, try wand bracers, from Dungeonscape. Draw a wand as a swift action. Each bracer holds 5 wands.

One bracer costs...500 gp? I think?

A pair of Wand Bracers with maxed out wands in each? 10 wands, all free actions to draw, and easily affordable (each bracer is only 100-300gp).

Of course, I like using Sovereign Glue to effectively staple a Light Steel Shield/one-hander to my arm, but that's because Warforged can do that anyway.

HunterOfJello

Heward's Handy Haversack 2,000 gp
Belt of Hidden Pouches 5,000 gp
Quiver of Ehlonna 1,800 gp

So you can be able to hold and easily grab all this new gear. (The Belt can hold and hide your familiar too.)

*edit*

also,
Crystal of return, least - Weapon Crystal, 300gp - Draw Weapon as a free action (definitely one of the cheapest feat replacing items there is, and the normal and greater versions are even more useful)

Doc Roc

I would recommend copying EVERYTHING in Bunko's. I've never been let down by a purchase from there.
As for gauntlets, I often have a bit of a rough time with those. Let me check my lists. Brb.

Arms:

Armbands of Might (MIC), +2 damage/-2 attack when power attacking, quite cheap(4,100gp).
Useful for any power attacker.

Torso: Vest of Resistance, useful if you need the shoulder slot for a cloak of charisma or something else.

Shoulders: Cloak of Displacement, minor(DMG). The major one sucks, but the minor one is permanent.
Good for any character.

I was thinking of wearing them all at once, but I see they don't have the 24 attune time, so you cab just swap them out. Darn Psi, gets better use with their 1st lvl powers.

For people that move and attack (*coughcoughScoutcoughcough*), Ring of Entropic Deflection. You move at least 10 ft., you get 20% miss chance against ranged attacks (it doesn't say you have to move, though: just be 10 feet away from where you were at any turn!). With an item that grants you an enhancement bonus to speed, miss chance goes to 50%. While it may be a tad situational, consider this is a miss chance based on Entropic Shield, it is not concealment, but actually a barrier that protects against any ranged attack. Of course, it's still technically bypassed by Pierce Magical Concealment, but... (MIC, p.123, 8,000 gp)

Another one is Ring of Silent Spells. Silence 1/day, but you can cast up to 3 spells of up to 3rd level during that specific Silence. A bane for all casters without Silent Spell, specially if you can grapple them. Now, you might get trouble with teleporting, but if you can prevent that...well, let's just say you can't assume all casters have Silent Spell and Still Spell, and the ability to cast those two at any moment. Or, maybe they do, but it's still a risk that's perfectly worth it if you're not a caster anyways...(MIC, p.127, 2,000 gp)

Tabard of Valor (Torso). Darn, it's Mettle! And if you already had Mettle, it's Improved Mettle! Of course, it requires you to be at 50% of your HP, but it's still a worthwhile investment when it activates (Complete Champion)

Not sure if Bunko promotes it, but Blindfold of True Darkness (Face). Pretty much the best example of cost-efficient blindsight around. There are better ones around, but they're a tad limited in range, or have limited uses, or require some extra investment somewhere else. For 9K gp, it's almost a steal! (MIC, p.75)

Blindfold of True Darkness has proved to be a regular component of extremely good ToS builds, as Osc mentions.

Arcanist's Gloves are one of the best items for Psions, if M\Psi Transparency is running at full.

Problem is, that doesn't work for all spells, only arcane.

Psi/Magic transparency isn't usually as accepting of boosts unless they apply to all spellcasting types.

Ammunition with the manifester property (XPH). Ranged weapons with the manifester property hold 5 pp per day as if they were cognizance crystals, except they refill themselves. Ammo can be enhanced with any properties that ranged weapons can, except you get 50 for the same price. Thus, 50 +1 manifester arrows cost about the same as a +1 manifester bow, except there are 50 of them. And they each have 5 pp in them every day. And you can draw as many as you like in a round as free actions. Seriously, that's just amazing. 250 pp per day in increments of 5, for less than 20k?

Enveloping pits. 3,600 gp, from the MIC. It's a 50' deep portable hole that can be opened as a swift action, and the opening can be anywhere from 1' to 10' wide. So long as the depth doesn't bother you overmuch (and for my current character, who can walk vertically while ethereal, due to his phase cloak, it doesn't), then you get a much better portable hole at just over 1/10 the price.

The manyfanged property. Costs +30,000 gp. This little ditty is from Serpent Kingdoms, and multiplies all damage done by the weapon by x4 on normal hits (and x5 on a critical). Add to a lance and use Spirited Charge (along with the collision property - +5 dmg per swing) for more fun.

Problem is, that doesn't work for all spells, only arcane.

Psi/Magic transparency isn't usually as accepting of boosts unless they apply to all spellcasting types.Lucky for me, in this particular campaign I'm in, psionists are considered arcane spellcasters (but with specialized mechanics - ie, psionic focus and extra options).

Two items I really enjoy:

Horizon Goggles (Complete Mage 133, 8,000gp) Grant the benefits of the Far Shot feat, which is nice. Also increase the range of spells that require a ranged attack roll by 50%, which is even nicer.
Especially for a warlock with the eldritch spear invocation (who doesn't want 375 feet of range).

Ring of Sustenance 233(DMG, 2,500 gp) No need for food or drink is nice, but the real payoff is only needing two hours of sleep per day. That's six less hours of potential ambush time and six more hours of adventuring.
Any one should have one of these

Heward's Fortifying Bedroll - CompMage. A few thousand gold, and you can get enough rest to refresh spells in 1 hour (every other day).

Phew, I was forgetting a few ones!

Glitter Stone (Other; sling ammunition or thrown item). Deals no damage, but allows the effect of a Glitterdust spell for three rounds. That should be enough to deal with an invisible creature. Since it can be used as part of a sling, it should be good as part of a full-round attack with it. It's only 450 gp, so it's insanely easy to make and/or keep a few around. Just when flour isn't enough (MIC, p.161)

Periapt of the Sullen Sea (Throat). Arguably, this is better for casters. First, it grants you the ability to hold up your breath for up to 12 hours before having to make Constitution checks. This ability is continuous, so you can take a slight breather in-between the 24 hours and never need to breathe anymore. Well, breathe twice a day (isn't this hilarious?). The real kicker is if you have the ability to cast up to 4th level spells (that includes rangers, paladins and hexblades of 4th level, duskblades, and a few other classes that aren't full spellcasters), you can substitute one of those slots to cast Freedom of Movement. The limitation is that the substitution is done twice per day, and at times you're sacrificing one of your best spells for it, but it's as if using a runestaff. Twice per day. I recall there are better ways to get Freedom of Movement, but this one is really, really good (MIC, p. 205, 6000 gp)

Revelation Crystal (weapon crystal). Any of the three is good. Least reveals an invisible creature's position for one round, Lesser reveals the invisible creature altogether, and Greater nulls concealment bonuses from buffs (not from effects, though). So, for 5,000 gp, you get Pierce Magical Concealment for nearly everyone... Well, since a tooth counts as an item slot, weapon crystals technically could count, no? The catch is that you need a weapon with an actual +3 enhancement bonus (no equivalent enhancement bonus, and I presume neither Greater Magic Weapon cast to the weapon to be used) in order to use the greater version. (MIC, p.66, 400 gp for least, 1,000 gp for lesser, 5,000 gp for greater)

Third Eye Surge (Face). Three-charges per day, you get an insight bonus to Strength checks, Dexterity checks, Strength-based skill checks (Climb, Jump, Swim), Dexterity-based skill checks (Balance, Escape Artist, Hide, Move Silently, Open Lock, Ride, Tumble, ...and Use Rope...), as well as weapon damage rolls (either melee, ranged or natural) for 1 round. The 1-charge use grants a +2 insight bonus. Not too shabby for the cost, which may prompt you to buy (or make!) one every few levels and just rotate them. Heck, give them to friends and other people! (MIC, p.143, 2,100 gp)

Fanged Ring (Ring). This one's for Monks, Unarmed Swordsages, and just anyone who really wants to duke it out with their fists. You get Imp. Unarmed Strike, Improved Natural Attack with the Unarmed Strike (this is where I rub it down to Boo-hlman!), and if you pull off a crit with that unarmed strike, you deal 1 point of Con damage. All of that on a single ring! (Dragon Magic, p.101, 10,000 gp)

Necklace of Natural Weapons (Throat). This one's also for Monks (and Unarmed Swordsages!) as well as users of Incarnum that love their natural attacks (*coughcoughTotemistscoughcough*). Now, they can also have their own magical natural weapons! Think of the possibilities: rocket fists, drill horns, metal-slicing claws...wait, those are mecha staples. But, you can figure that whenever the Dinosaur Empire dealt with the Mazinger, they used one of these items. Or, well...any of the tokusatsu monsters of the day. If they can do, why you can't? Get one...today! (Savage Species, p.58, 600 gp [think of it as making your natural weapons "masterwork"] plus the enhancement bonus times the number of natural weapons affected)

...I'll see if I can capture enough, but the Necklace is an old friend of the ToS (not sure if it passes the restrictions on the Savage Species material as per the rules, but it is definitely one of the things virtually everyone that enters the ToS first learns).

Well, one of my favorite one-shot items is Pure Element (Water) from Planar Handbook. It's a thrown weapon, sure, it costs 1000 gps a shot, but... if you manage to hit your enemy with it, it forces constitution checks (with increasing DCs) for 1 minute, each round. Against drowning. Combine with a wand of Launch Object and True strike, and you've got yourself a killer.

There's also +1 Parrying Spellblade Shuriken of Warning that's basically a standard for a lot of my optimisation characters. +7 to initiative and immunity to a single targeted spell (greater dispel magic is my personal favorite) for the low, low cost of 486.2 gps. Just make sure you never throw the damn thing.

I hope these qualify, despite being weapons.

Necklace of Adaptation, from the DMG. It surrounds you in a bubble of air, making you immune to any type of direct effect from cloud, fog, or gas attacks (including solid fog, acid fog, stinking cloud, gold dragon sleep breath, and cloudkill. It also prevents you from suffocation under any and all circumstances, including drowning.

Psychoactive Skin of Ectoplasmic Armor, from the XPH (psychoactive skin slot). Identical to full plate, except it's not actually metal armor (so monks and druids can use it), doesn't decrease your speed, weighs only 1 lb, and can be donned or doffed with a standard action (making tricky skill rolls easier).

Third Eye (Sense), also from the XPH (goggles slot) allows you to use clairvoyant sense at will (lets you scry on a place you specify or can see, regardless of distance).

Gauntlets of Giantfelling, from the MIC. Gets 3 charges per day, and deals additional damage to larger creatures, depending on how much larger than you they are.

Piercer Cloak, MIC. 3 charges per day, deals extra damage if you're on higher ground; stacks with Gauntlets of Giantfelling (which is nice for archers).

And you can't forget a bow of the wintermoon (also MIC). It's a composite longbow that adjusts its Strength rating to yours. Add elvencraft for both ranged and melee smiteage without having to drop it.

For terms of cost-effectiveness, sure. However, nothing tends to beat the Energy Bow (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061227a). It's...VERY expensive and it would have made a fine lesser artifact (the beauty, of course, is that it isn't a lesser artifact), but what it offers...OH, what it offers! First, it's a +2 weapon, which means that it only needs one more boost to turn into a +3 weapon (and hence, Greater Revelation Crystal). It also allows "power shots", which is Power Attack with the bow. AND, it's a composite longbow that adjusts its Strength rating with the user's. However, the big catch is the ability to use the weapon unstrung, shooting arrows of pure force. The damage is much greater than Force arrows (2d6 compared to 1d8), and you don't need to have any arrows at all; furthermore, since you're effectively making ammunition, you can get important enhancements to the bow and grant that benefit with all shots you make. Of course, you still can use regular, masterwork or enchanted ammunition, but no force properties (unless you get the force property in the arrows, but then again that's a tad counter-productive). The problem is the cost (22,600 gp), but for all it offers, it's almost a steal.

A +2 Force bow, to compare, costs about 18,400 gp; that means the self-adjusting, the self-reloading, and the Power Shots cost something along the lines of 4,000 gp. Let's say the self-adjustment costs around 1,000 gp (by Bow of the Wintermoon), so that means the power shots and the self reloading cost in combination 3,000 gp. Not to mention, it's not alignment restricted (and it doesn't grant the frost and bane properties, either). The increased attack and the self-recharging are pretty good enough to justify the extra price, if not more.

A +1 Force Bow of the Wintermoon is a pretty good replacement for the Energy Bow, but speaking just with the core weapon, the Energy Bow stands a bit further. Or stands even more, if you're not between NG-CG-CN.

Everything up to this point has been added, sans things I can't find references to. Seriously, where is the Phoenix Cloak?

I'm considering adding a weapons catagory, since so many are being suggested.

Also, I'll be mining Bunko's sometime today.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, and keep em coming! I notice a distinct lack of rogue gear, by the way.

Restful Crystal 500 GP, Magical Item Compendium. Armor Augment crystal, slots into worn armor, making it so that you can sleep in it without penalty.

Actually, just about all of the Augment Crystals are good. Then there are the Chronocharms, those are good too.

Actually, just add all of the stuff out of the MIC.

Oo, and Freezing Crystals, turns water into ice, I like using those in conjuction with a decanter of endless water to make a decnater of endless ice shards... nice cone damage. Shrapnel FTW.

Bracers
Greatreach Bracers: MIC, 3/day (Swift) lengthen reach.
Bracers of Murder: DoTU, +2 att/dmg against flat-footed foes, reroll 1's on sneak attack, +2 to Death Attack DCs. A must-have for rogue types.

Belt
Monk's Belt: 13K, DMG, +5 to monk level for damage and AC, +1 Stunning Fist, gain wisdom to armor as a monk.

Non-slotted:
Monk's Tattoo. 80K, Magic of Faerun. +4 monk levels for damage, speed, and AC.

Face:
Gloom Mask: 3K, DoTU, 3/day see in all darkness. 3/day Widen Spell on any dark typed spell.

Ring:
Ring of Anticipation: 6K, DoTU, roll twice for initiative, +2 competence to Listen/Spot. My favorite ring.

Armor:
Fearsome armor: 8K enhancement to armor to make Intimidate a move action.

Crystal Mask of Visual Insight is outright bizarre, allowing you to ignore concealment rather than merely the mischance derived from it.

I like your Decanter Freezing idea; I may need to borrow that.
I agree with the MIC. It is a great book for equipment.

My favourites are the Iron Ward Diamond (armor crystal) which gives cheap DR.
least DR 1/- up to 10 hp/day [500gp], lesser DR 3/- up to 30 hp/day [2000gp], greater DR 5/- up to 50 hp/day [8000gp]

There is also the Crystal of Life Drinking, which is a less expensive alternative to a vampiric weapon (weapon crystal).
least 1 hp/attack up to 10 hp/day [400gp], lesser 3 hp/attack up to 30 hp/day [1500gp], greater 5 hp/attack up to 50 hp/day

Finally, for a SA rogue, you can't beat a crystal of truedeath, greater (weapon crystal)
deal +1d6 against undead and can crit/sneak attack undead [10,000gp]

And, for a Hexblade nothing is better than Hexbands (arms)
+1 DC to curse; 5/day add Cha to weapon damage [3,100gp]

The MIC is golden.
