Various posts in the You thread and the recent adventures of a couple of my friends has gotten me thinking about costumes. So... I thought I'd start a thread on them.

What have you made/worn? What would you like to make/worn? What're the best ones you've seen? Where are the best places to buy them? Do you need any help or advice making something? Here's the place!

So. Here's the friends who got me thinking about it:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs363.snc3/23429_383457984054_655819054_3931194_203312_n.jpg

Here's a couple I've worn before:
Rainforest Fairy
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2695/0/62/1030392692/n1030392692_30399589_4955998.jpg

Generic Fairy Tale Orphan
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2695/0/62/1030392692/n1030392692_30399587_2439227.jpg

I like the first one better...
My Boy's dashing Fox costume:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2695/0/62/1030392692/n1030392692_30399573_302294.jpg

I've been thinking about what sort of costume I'd wear if I went to a convention of some sort, like the above friends. I'm slightly limited in that I'd like to look good, but I'd prefer to dress appropriately for my... shape... So I'm thinking Queen Bavmorda.

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTgyOTAyMjQ3MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwOTEzOTA3._V1._ SX450_SY348_.jpg

I think the best base for it would be a (probably heavily modified) nun's habit, like this:
http://www.catholichomeandgarden.com/images/Costumes/adult%20mother%20superior%20plus%20size%20costume. jpg

Anyone have any other ideas that could work for me?

Now... Go thread go!

Might I ask what purpose is this for? Are you cosplaying for an upcoming convention, costume party at a friends?

And here's me in a homemade cardboard spess mehreen cosplay. :smalltongue:

Quick tip for cardboard costumes: Make sure the damn thing holds together, couldn't go 5 minutes without a piece falling off. :smallsigh: At least the helmet and chainsword was solid.

I've posted it here before and I doubt it'll be anywhere near as good as the other costumes in this thread, but here (yet again) is my 2009 halloween costume. It's basically just me crossdressing with the closest approximation to my usual clothing I could find;

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1986/dscn0030small.jpg
Here's my "normal" outfit and my costume for comparison (thumbnail linked, since I don't have a smaller one handy);

When I was a young lad, I liked forcing my mother to make/help me make (usually the former) elaborate Halloween costumes. Only two are most memorable.

When I was ten I was a rather dashing Blastoise roaming the streets, in a big cushiony shell with big cardboard cannons and even a Blastoise-head-helmet made with the help of paper mache and a balloon. Ah, memories.

A year or two later, I was a monstrous slug-alien, with a slug-tail and a pair of tentacles below my normal arms, all designed around a store-bought glow-in-the-dark multi-nostrilled Alien Mask.

I'm not sure if we still have pictures of those. This last October I made a helmet out of foam and such as Peice One of the Mysterious Power Armoured Figure, or Mipaff, or Captain Future, whichever I choose to call myself, depending on if I make a jetpack or a flamethrower. I have pictures of that, but I can't upload them right now.

When I was little, I wanted to be Zorro or Superman; sadly, no costumes eventuated.

However...a friend of mine actually cosplayed, replete with cardboard boxes, as Soundwave for an anime convention. It was made of win. I'll try to find a pic for you.

There's also a pic of a fan-made Transformers cosplay that could alternately seamlessly transform from car to bipedal robot. I'll see if I can find that for you as well.

dude.
I love you.

The best costume I've ever made was an undead zombie Biker. In fact, that was the only half decent costume I've ever made. I'm really quite bad at making costumes. (Also, because I'm lazy) :I

I envy you all.
However, I hate Kara who continues to make awesome costumes time after time.

Last expo I had to put together a costume because the one I ordered didn't arrive. But I never really made anything, I just put bits together so that doesn't really count. Therefore, pictures are inappropriate for thread.

Unfortunately no Pictures were taken (By me or my friends >.>).

However I'm currently putting together an attempt at a Wolf Anthro Costume by getting a friend in america to make me ears, tail and paws.
=P

EDIT:
However I do have a single shop bought costume and I want to get a Rikku costume =P

Ah-hah, that.... dark thing on the wall is a picture hook. There was a picture there, which we took off to take the picture. The eyes are a fabric that you can almost see through, when direct light is not on it, a fact I didn't quite realize when I got it.

I intend to finish the rest of the suit, and maybe re-do the helmet when I'm better and not constrained to a warped collandor and with foam glued to it.

Well, at the risk of stating the obvious; A giant hat and a dress/robe (with the ends cut uneven)?

You could make the hat using another hat as the base and just use fabric over a wire frame to give it the right shape/appearence.

Maybe have some black muslin or another soft fabric hanging from it as smoke/shadow-yness?

Sorry if I'm rambling a bit but it's late.

Nah. If it were L, the jeans would be baggy, he would be hunched over, he would have bags under his eyes, and someone would be beating him up.

He did say that he made the costume the day before and this is Nameless we're talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't realise there was such a thing as baggy jeans. But I may be wrong. I just remember seeing that in the You thread, and either thinking or reading it was L.

Gods I would upload a truckload of my larping costumes over the years. But my hard drives crashed, and then my motherboard fried. So I am without pretty pictures of myself. (yes I do indeed feel very lonely, thank you)

and I still need a character to cosplay as at cons, I could only make myself to do something like that if I look the part on all fields.

Very nice job. But if you're going to wear this again, I would suggest darting your vest a bit. A little bit of alteration work would make it much more flattering.

I've got to really get to work on my next few costumes. I've got a few to work on over the summer, which should prove interesting. A few of the playgrounders know that I cosplay this character:

You're going to Abunai I presume then?

Also on the fair list I'm going to: Kelfest, Midzomerfair, Castlefest.

Didn't even know it, shame on me. (was using con instead of fair for some reason) I have to see how it fits into the budget, not having a job currently and all.

In any case I should be at most if not all of those fairs!

I've figured out what I would make for a convention or whatever: A Weeping Angel costume  Hard part would be making it comfortable... I would definitely be getting inspiration from this (http://community.livejournal.com/dw_cosplay/130390.html) person. I particularly like the idea of using painted stockings, rather than skin paint like I was thinking of doing. I think I'd avoid using a mask and paint my eyelids instead, though. I think my dress wouldn't be as heavy (and, alas, therefore probably not as good), but I'd really wanna avoid getting too hot. The hidden pockets would be a good idea, too. Same with a panel to hide the wing straps. Not sure if I'd make the wings out of the same stuff - I was thinking of carving some sort of foam. I was also thinking I'd attach them to some sort of corset or bustier, so I could wear them over the dress. I'd get a normal wig for the hair, and paint it.
Watchall think?

What type of shop should I look for to find fabric and other raw materials (To cut a long story short I'm trying my hand at a cosplay)?

Details of the cosplay.
The cosplay I'm planning is the Disgaea Thief. While it might sound a bit strange that I'm doing a crossplay as my first cosplay, most of the characters I like enough to cosplay in the first place are female, it wouldn't be the first time I've dressed as a female "character" (I was my own distaff counterpart last Halloween) and (as a friend pointed out when I noted this) it will most likely be rather amusing.

Frank N. Furter

The Prototype Big Daddy, or Subject Delta, is a personal project. Over the summer I really want to work on and build that suit. The hardest part is the helmet, breathing gear, and EVE tanks. The easy part (and I hesitate to call any part of this process easy) will be the fabric suit.

Dr. Strangelove is an easy fallback, but I would want to layer on thiiiccckkk makeup to be a "silver screen" character. That is to say, I would want to be real life black and white.

Lastly, my beloved Frank. Not just a project or a hobby, but a life goal. That little corset, briefs, and stockings are the strongest motivation (other than getting laid) that I can think of to get in shape. This summer (in quite a few more than 7 days) I intend to Make [Myself] A Man. I'll do press-ups, push-ups, the snatch, clean, and jerk... Oh dynamic tension must be awfully HARD work!

Oh deary me, I've gone on a tirade.

I presume you'd have the same thing over there, some sort of sewing shop. In Armidale we have Generic Sewing Shop, Fancy Dressmaking Shop, Quilting Shop, and Curtain-making Shop. I think you can get material from big places like K-Mart and Big W, as well. Also consider checking out op-shops - sometimes they have material, although mostly it's smaller pieces, and you can also demolish cheap dresses and things for their material.

Without remembering your location, I could recommend Fabricland (http://www.fabricland.co.uk/), since they seem to have several brick'n'mortar shops as well as an online presence, and good prices. (Site built in the heyday of Geocities and not updated stylistically since. Don't say I didn't warn you.) The usual guideline applies: the shinier and more interesting the fabric, the harder it is to sew and keep it looking good. Do not touch that "stage satin" as the difficulty of making that look neat is triple.

That would be smashing! I can figure out the suit simply enough, but I really like that helmet. I've been thinking making a cardboard frame and then spraying that with a two inch coat of expanding foam. Once that sets, I'd carve and sand it to shape and then seal/paint it with some thick coats of gods-know-what.

My only other dilemma is what weapon I should go equipped with. The drill is obvious, but the hardest to make.

After I do this one to death and retire it, I can always turn it into a Johann Krauss Exctoplasmic Containment suit or something fancy like that.

I have their delivery and brick'n'mortar recommendations at second hand. Wouldn't go with delivery if I were just starting this hobby, like you are, and only need a small amount, which for a hat you don't need much. Also, they could explain what I was trying to explain about the Disgaea hat being a two-cornered affair.

Conveniently, it's called "fleece" or "polar fleece", and this site uses the latter term. I used that for my pink hat and confirm it behaves well other than shedding fuzzballs everywhere.

Me: Hey --, I know someone who wants to make a Big Daddy costume, and I said I'd find out how you did yours. So... How'd you do your Big Sister costume?
Her: um... a ****load of work... I mean... I went to the dump a lot and scrounged for the cheapest stuff I could get that would work. I cant really help unless I know which Big Daddy he's doing to give any sort of guidance. =) Alpha, Rosie, Bubbles or Project Delta...
Me: Well, main thing is the helmet: what'd you use for it?
I'm not sure which, but he thought the drill would be best but wasn't sure how to make it.
Her: There's a small toy drill looking thing at the dump secondhand store. It could be built upon that quite easily. As for the helmet... I can't really say, depends which one he's doing... I used a couple of semi-spherical lampshades... did the detail in foam.

Find a character you like.
Think; do you have any clothing or accessories which resemble theirs?
Keep thinking; is their clothing made up of "real" clothes, that you could buy or find if you don't have them? Maybe with a bit of modification.
Continue to think; could you make the rest from scratch (if there's anything left at all). Remember that sewing and other basic crafts can be picked up quite easily (hell, I was taught to sew and use woodworking and other res-mat tools as a kid and I didn't even realise it). Props can easily be made from paper mache (although other materials are used by serious cosplayers).

For example, I'm a fan of the Thief from Disgaea;

I already own quite a few pairs of goggles.
Her undershirt is simply a normal shirt but cropped, her shorts are just red short shorts and her puches are generic belt pouches. Her gloves are just gloves (they might be cat's paw gloves, it's hard to tell from the sprite, but those are still easy to find/make).
Her hat can be made from two pieces of cloth and stitched together.
Her jacket is normal, apart from being cropped and having flaired sleeves (not to hard to make from scratch or modify an existing one, especially since it doesn't need to be buttoned up.
Add in a paper mache gun or bow (or simply borrow my brother's bow :smalltongue:).
Grow enough of a backbone/become sufficently inebriated to crossplay. :smallwink:

hmm i may have to test this theory. the latter option of course:smalltongue: (well, maybe)

as for the rest of the info. yeah, you make some good points. the only things i would have to say is that i feel like i need everything to be perfect (this might not be the case, but its how i feel) and this makes me scrutinize everything. just because that item of clothing looks quite simmilar, doesnt mean it looks identicle :smallsigh:

Nah, it's good to want everything to be perfect. But as I say whenever someone says they feel they made too many mistakes in their work (or just tries to be modest); There's always something you could have done, what matters for now is what you have done.

You'll never succeed the first time, so get it out of the way...wow, that sounded cheesy.

for this reason i suppose its best to go with something relatively simple. although L is too simple :smalltongue:

@ Littlebottom: PLEASE do not cosplay L. Almost everyone in the cosplay community would rather have you attempt an actual COSTUME (even if it doesn't come out as well as you'd have liked) than cosplay L. The current, token cop-out character. I'm only slightly ranting here, honestly, ask any frequent cosplayer... They HATE L cosplayers.

Argh, I hate that stuff, simply because of the name "guyliner". There is NO difference between eye liner and guyliner except guyliner costs more for some reason.

@Kara: Nah, Little should totally get a massive group of friends/people to go in as an army of L's. That would be amazing.

I actually find all the L’s amusing. You see them scattered about the field munching on sweets or sitting awkwardly. And dotted about you get the frequent Beyond Birthday L. It almost looks like zombies have taken over.

well, i was kind of pointing at the fact i should do a simple cosplay (but not L):smalltongue:

@nameless: actually an L army would be cool.

a possibly simple idea came to me, but its only an idea... Wolfwood from Trigun. his weapon would just be a bunch of cardboard boxes glued togeather with a sheet over them with belts to secure it. and his cloths are a simple sort of suit with crosses for cufflinks, sun glasses and a ciggerette (although i dont smoke so i wouldnt light it but id have one for the look) although the hair would be an absolute pain as i have long blond hair.:smallsigh:

Draco and I actually made her Wolfwood costume out of Mt. Dew 12-can boxes taped/glued together (between myself and a friend we had PLENTY). Then covered them in canvas and the appropriate black belting. It looked great, and was plenty light-weight to carry around.

I only found one picture of myself in full Wolfwood garb, which was from our skit in the cosplay contest that year. You can barely see me in the photo, though, and the Punisher is blocked by someone's head.

There's also video of our entire skit on someone's Facebook profile, but I can't find the video anywhere else. I'll have to keep searching.

I still have that thing, as far as I know. Last I checked it was still sitting up in the rafters of our garage.

My costumes have been homemade since I was eight, and I haven't lost a costume contest since I was seven, so, yeah. Lemme find some pics.
ast year, I used my dad's old army uniform and some of my newer stuff and an airsoft m-14 to scare the living **** out of the kids my age who were bullying the younger kids out of their candy. Two of my friends and I had gone all camo and &^%$ and we jumped out of the bushes and fired capguns into the air.
Needless to say, the ten year olds left our block with more candy than they came in with for once.

Sorry to add a question too, but does anyone have advice for making simple pointy elf ears, that won't fall off too easily? I'd much rather easy-to-make, easy-to-wear than very realistic, so I'm thinking something along the lines of cardboard cut-outs, but is there a good way to attach cardboard to one's ears?

Also, there are some pretty awesome costumes in this thread, kudos to all!

Kicking around the idea for a Vault Dweller (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_Dweller) costume. I'll most likely cheap out and use a pair of pants and a shirt for the jumpsuit, but the leather pauldron and belts might just be doable.

Still very much in the planning phase. It's a loose costume, so the trick is coming up with a set of accessories that a.) look good, b.) are easy to provide, and c.) won't get me shot by the police.

Maybe modify some earmuffs? Like, cut off the part that goes on the ear, and attach the cardboard to the band that sits on your head.

Or maybe wear a headband. Put the fake ears on that, and have it wrap around your ears.

Anyways, I remembered something that I'll have to do for my costume that'll make me a little sad.

I'm gonna have to shave. Freakazoid had no facial hair. And I do.

@ Bisected: Check this webiste: link (http://pawstar.com/merch_product_page.php?page=list&category=cyber&current_section=cyber_goggles)
They have goggles and costume lenses you can sent into them. They're not exactly shaped the way you want them to be, but you could always take the band of and set them on a wider band. Plus my friend bought a pair at an anime convention last year and they're a good quality and comfortable to wear. So that's a plus.

@ Kender Wizard: There's an adhesive called spirit gum (link (http://www.stageandtheatermakeup.com/bnarc.htm?gclid=CNzx8JDhgaMCFQhGnQodNGDjZA)) that people use in large scale theatre companies to attach cosmetics. Its not particularly expensive and pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it.

Thanks for the suggestion but they're kind of expensive, would still need some modifying (which doesn't solve the issue of a material to make them of) and even then they'd be the wrong shape (the goggles are oval shaped to give them a cats eye effect). Plus, to cut a long story short, I really hate having stuff shipped from overseas. :smallfrown:

All I really need is some material to make the soft parts of the goggles out of (the solid parts won't be a problem for me).

It doesn't look all that complicated. Judging that its basically a shirt and pants (plus an under layer of longer pants or something?). You could probably just do the specific colour/detail on the shirt with some extra fabric of the appropriate colour - but you'll want to try to get the actual fabric as close to the original fabric of the shirt as possible.

For the shoes you can probably do something similar by overlaying vinyl or a similarly thicker/stronger fabric. For the hat I'd suggest just making it out of fleece - there are a plenty of patterns on the web (I did a standard search on Google for 'fleece hat patterns' and easily found plenty you could modify to that general shape).
