View Full Version : Best Cleric Domains vs. Undead?

For a Cleric starting off at lvl 5, the Undeath Domain looks great. Probably Dwarf Cleric, any WoTC sources. I might end up going Cloistered Cleric, but I haven't decided yet.

So, what domains do you think are the best for a Cleric focused on killing undead?

*edit*

oh, and killing evil outsiders too, but less of those

Sun Domain's Greater Turning ability is probably best when specializing just for killing undead. However, Planning and Undeath Domains help set you up nicely for getting Divine Metamagic (Persistent Spell), which make you very effective at fighting undead, among other things.

I've seen the Sun Domain mentioned in a lot of places talking about undead, but isn't it kinda subpar since it can only be used once per day?

killing undead?why would a cleric vs a bunch of undead want to do that??

Can't really recomend any domains, but I can highly recomend the Extra Turning and Improved Turning feats.

The Good domain might actually be useful here... for once.

Trickery because the Polymorph line is absurd, and it gets you PAO.

I find Glory more useful than Sun, as it powers all of your turnings instead of just giving one good one.

Be a Radiant Servant of Pelor - you lose nothing and get Glory for free.

I second Optimystik wholeheartedly; RSoP is done just to destroy undead and does a great job at it. I also though about the glory domain before the Sun one.

Sun domain is best because it's a requirement for Radiant Servant.

Sun Devotion (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Sun_Devotion) is not bad if you're a beatstick and fighting a lot of undead. That said, Glory (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/domains.htm#gloryDomain) is tailored for fighting undead.

At medium levels, Planning domain is handy as well, as has been mentioned. You're going to want Extend Spell to keep those anti-undead buffs running longer when you're in the thick of things. There's nothing worse than Death Ward running out before you've killed the last spectre or wight.

And on a related note, if you're a cleric who smashes things (and most are), Knowledge Devotion feat is worth mentioning. You don't have to have the knowledge domain, just a deity that likes it, and with your Knowledge Religion, you're getting combat bonuses versus the undead. (plus any other critters from other knowledge skills you might have)

I actually suggest the Following:

Cleric of Pelor 8/Prestige Paladin 1/Contemplative 1/RSoP 10

I actually suggest the Following:

Cleric of Pelor 8/Prestige Paladin 1/Contemplative 1/RSoP 10Cleric 5/Ordained Champion 5/Bone Knight 10. Rebukes undead as level 20 cleric (before tricking out turning). Rebuking undead is more powerful than turning them, and making them your personal army is more fun than just destroying them. :smallwink:

Alternatively, a beatstick to beat the undead: Cleric 5/Ordained Champion 5/Knight of the Raven 10. I don't know much about Knight of the Raven but it ought to be full BAB 9/10 casting PrC with some undead-fighting stuff.

These are both solid builds. I'd say RSoP is better than Knight of the Raven overall, but KoTR has way cooler fluff and a lot of nifty tricks you can pull off with the raven harrier.

I suggested mine because you can utilize all of your favorite Undead-Bane domains: Sun, Glory, Undeath, and Patience

Comboed with a Lightbringer Cleric, and you can open up a keg of Whoop-Ass brand ale

Complete Divine, Expidition to Castle Ravenloft, Unearthed Arcana, Complete Champion, and I believe Faiths and Pantheons.

and y'all trust me: a Paladin with one feat (forgot what its called, but it increases turning to cleric-level) is the Undead Slayer Specialist:

Holy Champion Paladin 5/Divine Crusader 7/Knight of the Raven 5/Contemplative 3
