Say you have a monster and you would really like for your fuzzy little pet goblin/ogre/beholder to survive on its own all those pesky and deadly adventurers roaming the generic world of D&D. What should a smart monster in your opinion do?

Some of my ideas:
- take PC caster classes, also, become a lich
- develop spell-like ability AMF(Ex) At will.
- Grow some wings (tarrasque )
- breed like rabbits

Secretly helping a little village, showing vague hints of what you are. Start out with minor things (helping the hunters) and minor hints (like a footprint). Later he can show glimpses of himself and help with things like level 1 bandits.
After enough rumors and time the villagers accept the thought of a monster helping them, he can show himself and now has a entire village of friends.

Then befriend cities, metropolises and the world!

Or get a first and last name and become a recurring villain, those don't die.

Magical Experimentation!

When in doubt, MAKE IT BETTER!

Mineral Warrior template? Apparently a Harpell did this by mixing potions...

Obtain an apple cart. Adventurers typically don't kill anyone who owns an apple cart.

Get religion, preferably one of the good-aligned gods. If your ogre has armor emblazoned with the sign of Pelor, adventurers might give him a chance to explain himself. Worst case, they might hesitate long enough for you to run away.

Befriend a small angelic-looking child. (This is not a 100%-sure defense (http://goblins.keenspot.com/d/20050917.html), but it helps). If you absolutely have to, eat only the mean kids.

Yes, magical experimentation. Use one of those rituals from Savage Species to become a half celestial. Most adventures will thingk twice about killing something with angel wings, even if it happens to be a beholder...Can't imagine how weird that would look to the average adventurer though...a beholder with wings!?

Might look a bit like an overgrown Snitch with eyes and teeth?

I should start a ridiculous monster thread.
