I really like the master specialist prestige class in Complete mage, but it's very limited by only being available to specialist wizards. Because of that, I'm considering opening it up to other arcane casting classes as well. What I'm thinking of doing is allowing sorcerers to enter if at least half their spells known are from the school that they want to specialize in. Likewise, warmages could enter for evocation, dread necromancers could enter for necromancy, beguilers could enter for either illusion or enchantment.

My questions are:

Is having half your spells known from that school too stiff of a requirement for sorcerers? Would a third or a quarter be better?

Are there other arcane casting base classes that I've forgotten?

Are there any other pitfalls to doing this that I might be missing?

I don't think that needing half of your spells from a single school is too much, especially for the focused casters, but I think the class should grant bonus spells (of the school specialised in, of course) to counterbalance the need to fill all those spell slots. However, I think you might need to lower the feat prerequise, because spontaneous casters are much more feat starved then prepared casters.

You have forgotten the Wu Jen (CA and OA), but I'm AfB right now and can't verify if their spontaneous or prepared casters.

I don't think your missing anything else, but as I said, I'm AfB and can't verify anything.

Considering you can enter at level 2, when you only have 7 spells known? I'd say, no. You should specify whether you round up or down though. It's kind of hard to have 3.5 spells known.:smallwink:

I'd say change expanded spellbook to expanded spell list. Other than that, I think the PRC works for pretty much any other class.

Wu-Jen uses prepared casting
