"Welcome to home for the duration of the war preparations. Here you will be inventing and working your @$$es off creating what's needed to get the enemies dead and twitching." The commander called over the din of the other recruits.

"You will each be assigned a group and given a number representing your barracks. You have today to prepare, the fun starts tomorrow maggots."

You are in a large courtyard, three tables are to your side. Each of you are called out, given the names of the rest of your group (each other plus one Gareth Lanxton), and a metal plate labeled "Division 6".

Nick turns to the group.
"I guess that means we're stuck together for a while. I'm Nickolas Felton. Don't call me Nick.

A short stock man with two bladed pistols approaches you.

The name's Rhaid. I guess I'm gonna be making the guns for you guys.

"Good. If anything I have heard is true then you will be needed. Do you have any inventive ideas? It would look good if we started off with funds."

Alphonse kept himself professional even with the man barking at him. He knew it was all for show- they were scientific and military minds here, and though he did not expect to be treated like some conscript, he at least knew that there was coin here. Coin for his boy, who he now felt content at leaving behind. It wouldn't do the boy good to see such a bloody awful place, so full of eagerness to perpetuate murder and death. The workshop was a more appropriate place- a calm setting, one where the focus of work helped keep the mind concentrated.

Speaking of concentration...

The mechanic lit up a fresh cigar, snipping the bud as he approached the work tables. Such scraps of metal arrayed before him- the standard tools of any basic mechanic. They rang to him of the Cyriss testing chambers, and he was quick to spark the cigar's tip. Taking a few puffs, he felt calmness reign over him, his mind slowly re-orienting to the immediate task at hand. These...men wanted weapons.

He waved to the members of his group, "Here," He said to Ivan, producing a cigar for his companion as well, "It's Khadorian- good stuff, or so I'm told."

Walking closer, he began his inspection of the materials presented, nodding to the men of the group, "I am Alphonse Halder."

He gave a polite bow to the woman, "A pleasure to make your acquaintance. I have a few schemata I can...conjure up, do any of you have any conflicting plans or ideas?"

The much larger Ivan Bukolov stood behind and to the side of Alphonse the man whom' he was protecting. He wasn't that tall as others but being from Khador he had some decent height advantage. He didn't often say much to the other mechaniks of this place as he was not even knowledgeable of these strange mechanical devices. It was often shadowing Alphonse and keeping him well guarded, as was his job.

Ivan looked to the cigar for a moment and took the Khadorian made delicacy in his hand. Using a match from his pocket, lit the cigar, and began to smoke the lovely thing. With a grin from the bearded muscular fellow he gave Alphonse an armoured thumbs up.

"Da it taste well of homeland, warming me with pride. It taste pretty good and have good flavour, da it was good buy."

Puffing on the cigar he went back to folding his muscular arms against an iron breastplate and standing guard, as was his job. The Khadorian Beast didn't expect anything bad to happen but you never know around mechaniks, their brains filled with smoke, oil and soot.

Nick sets off in the direction of the door.

Al smiled at the approval of his comrade, nodding to Rhaid as the...other Khadorian departed. He assumed the other man was a Khadorian, but his accent- or rather, lack thereof- threw him off slightly.

"A pleasure to meet you, friend- I've met many gunsmiths on my travel, and actually have some skill with the matter myself. If it wouldn't be too troubling, do you think it would be possible for you to improvise a large-bore blunderbuss for me, designed for grappling hooks? It won't be shooting those, but a grappling gun has a close enough barrel size and firing power to what I have in mind."

He gave a short pause, "Err, that was quite rude of me, actually. I am Alphonse Halder, as I said before. I'm...a general mechanic, though I mostly work with Mechanika and similar components. Have to feed my family somehow, after all!" He gave a short laugh, taking another puff of the cigar.

Uh, commander? Most of my supplies are at my house. My specialty is working with specialized equipment from there. Could me and my barrack-mates work from there? Shaeldath asks, using the invocation entropic warding as he does so. It never hurts to be ready, in case of an ambient firefight. He had made the gun of one of the people here, and did not want to be on the other side of that barrel.

Seeing the man suddenly cast a spell, Alphonse jerked back in response. He wasn't the most proficient in magic, and the last thing he liked seeing was a man suddenly start shooting off magic in a crowded area. Magic could go awry in very bad ways.

After the initial shock, however, he tapped a bit of loose ashes off of his cigar. "Why would you leave them there? Ah well...I suppose we could requisition some servitors to transport them back on-site." He said eventually, "Don't want to go experimenting in the civilian district, now do we?" He asked.

Unless you can transport a complete alchemical lab, mechanikal lab, and a forge here, I doubt it. The property is a fair distance away from the town, a little bit past the outskirts. It's conceivable that we could work from there, as the material there is good, there is a nearby town to purchase materials from, (and I have discounts on all Ironworkers-approved mechanikal objects) and the place holds some memories. It's where I made his gun, he says, gesturing to Jaral, and Cerberus.

Ivan looked at the man casting and raised a brow, not exactly to keen on magic. He knew it was wielded by wizards and witches from his homeland. He looked to Alphonse and then back to the magic caster and decided to think of it strange but not threatening. Deciding to bring the flaps down on his ushanka and to smoke more of the cigar he did just that.

He looked to the man asking other "commander" if they can go to his home. Hopefully for a drink. "Uh'...vhat is meaning of casting of magic? I think mechaniks not need magic trick da?" He gave a curt chuckle, not really certain what was the point of casting magic during a conversation.

I'm just protecting myself in case of an assault. In my experience with dealing with the military, it never hurts to be ready. This way, I'm protected, at least in part, from anything that happens.

"Well, I'm certain they have mechanikal labs on-site, not to mention a forge. This is a military base." Alphonse replied, "As for being able to hold all seven of us, thank you, but no thank you- I have a home of my own to stay in. I'd rather not burden your own home."

He smiled as he thought of his own home, and the loving family he'd be able to return to, "Provided, of course, the commander here has no issue with me living at my own residence in town. I'm quite the early riser as it stands, so I'll be more than able to get where I need to."

As he saw Jarral enter such a tizzy, he took an unconscious step back. The man actually enjoyed shooting people? And he bunked with this Shael fellow and...part of him felt an instant repulsion to the idea of someone who actually embraced violence. He had his own weapons for self-defense, but he still took a step back as the man drew the bulky, unholy tri-barrel weapon. Such a tool was meant for one thing and one thing only: Massacres.

"Acceptable. I will have the paperwork done by noon and a convoy to escort you by 1400 hours. Until then you can order supplies you may need for any minor projects, just speak with the clerk near the barracks." After hearing Alphonse's response, "We would prefer to have you all in one location, it makes things easier on us and joint projects, as for labs here, we are limited, especially with the number of mechanics, alchemists, and mages here. If we can use an external source we use it, now i have other matters to attend to."

As the commander turns to another group of mechaniks, the soldier from before escorts a rather odd looking man to your group. He is tall, lean, extremely pale (whiter than white), has pitch-black hair, dichromatic eyes, one red, one blue, and wearing a black suit of leather armor with a scythe hanging across his back.

"Greetings, I am Gareth Lanxton, a pleasure to make your acquaitence," he speaks with a Cryxian accent, which causes many nearby to stiffen slightly.

Most likely, specialized equipment, like Cerberus. But with larger practical applications. For example, 'smart' bombs, which can position themselves where needed, without risking troops to plant them. Or, perhaps, construction of automatons. The possibilities are endless.

Turning to Gareth, without even a hint of being perturbed by the accent, How do you do? And what do you do?

Ivan looked at another Mechanik with his strange fast talking and his love for his gun. What was there to love a gun with more than two barrels? Mechaniks were always strange, even Alphonse was strange to him sometime.

"Is gun named Shaeldrath? You seem to love gun, does gun love you? I kid, I kid. So vhy does gun of three barrel? Vhat does last barrel do..?"

And this...handler. Whoever was his father and mother surely were terrible people, to make this boys life a living hell by looking like a bad Khadorian joke told by a rather drunk Khadorian with brain damage. The handler also wielded a scythe? He didn't think they needed a farmer with strange eyes and a love for black to be the handler.

"Da you are velcome although I have question. Vhy scythe? Do you farm vhile guarding mechaniks? Because I vas thinking you could teach me how to grow wheat and things for alcohol because I had drink in mind vhere it has grain and also a sort of burning taste for good warm time. "I specialize in materials, my father actually invented the first magelock pistol. I also have a talent for prosthetics," he lifts up his right sleeve, revealing a metal limb, fully connected and fused to the rest of his body, "and i have been assigned as the cleric for your team."

To Ivan, "My scythe is an heirloom, its been in my family for generations, and is of a... unique design."

Ah. I see. Well then, welcome, my comrade. And why should I use Cerberus? She is the most beatiful gun in the land - far more so, than anything that I have ever seen. Jarral says, as he greets the Cleric.

Alphonse looked at the newcomer before giving a smile. Even those physically disadvantaged, like the man with the strange eyes, deserved politeness. "Greetings!" He told the man, offering his hand for a brief shake, "I didn't know we'd be having a farmer join our group, but welcome all the same- I am Alphonse. A pleasure to make your acquaintance!"

He then turned to the mechanic, "A...smart bomb? Pardon my saying so but...that seems a tad strange. But I suppose to each his own, my newfound friend."

An explosive that didn't need a human touch to kill? What sort of mad weapon was that? This man and his companion obviously had a fixation on complex weapons. Then again, weren't all weapons complex in this day and age? Perhaps his ideas had some merit.

It took him a moment before he actually registered what Jarral said, and the meaning behind those words.

Taking the cigar out of his mouth, he blew out a puff of smoke, fixating the man with a single cocked eyebrow. "You seem like a nice guy, so I'll just give you a fair warning- don't bring my family or friends into this. I don't really care that you like your fancy three-shooter there, or if you believe there is a 'good' or 'bad' kind of killing. I'm here to make weapons, and leave it up to others to do the killing."

He took another puff before smiling, "So! When do we depart, my friends?"

Shaeldath nods appreciatively at Jaral's comment and whispers to the nearest soldier/barrack-mate who seems interested about the gun, 3 barrel action, a rapid reload system, and alchemical shots that can injure any creature. Cost a bundle to make, and he's still paying it off.

Hearing that the newcomer was a Cleric, Alphonse cocked an eyebrow almost in reflex. "Ah, well, never seen a scythe used in a battlefield before. Interesting concept, though! As for your father...quite curious. I always heard that Gun Mages simply craft their own pistols- never knew that a singular person actually invented such devices! Unless you're speaking about a specific brand of pistol, that is." He remarked, taking a puff, "I've actually seen some particularly curious pistols in that regards- a Pepperbox pistol with a rune plate built into it. Produced four fireballs in just as many seconds...terrible device, really. Never wanted to see the likes of it again."

The mechanic almost gagged on his cigar when he heard Cyriss mentioned. He burned through another quarter-inch of it with a long puff, the bright embers burning white hot as more ash flicked away in the breeze. "You serve the Lady of Gears?" He inquired, "Never seen a Cleric of the Lady beyond the monastery walls without some pilgrimage in mind...let alone in the service of another army. But I suppose that times are changing after all, and 'every man must do his part'." The mechanic quoted half-heartedly, twirling the stub around his lips from one side of the mouth to the other.

Ivan wasn't exactly certain what the hell estoric meant, but it sounded like ecstatic so he must be happy with his work. The large Khadorian man puffed on his cigar and scratched his beard while thinking over the weapon the man wielded, a heirloom? Guess he must've been born into a family of gunmage farmers!

"Da veapon is unique for farmer tool, I am sure it has done much wheat killing in its day. I kid, I kid and yes vhen do ve go off? I am hungry and I think all of this gun talk is making me thirst for drink."

Sorry about the stuff with your friends and family; I didn't mean it that way. And a gun that shoots fireballs, pardon me, but that sounds like it might be able to compare to Cerberus... perhaps I could get a fourth barrel added, and have a fireball chamber, and maybe a Magic Missile chamber, and... well, that's better for another time. Anywho, I like the fact that you worship the Lady of Gears, Mr. Cleric. It's really cool, just like your scythe. Perhaps you could show me some techniques with it, some time...?

Ivan raised a brow once more hearing the rather strange thing of being chosen by a god. What was that like? Especially a woman god! He assumed it was like picking a woman up at a bar, them walking up to you and feeling your rather large muscles and giving you a wink. Yes he was sure of it like picking up a woman at a bar, filled with a good time and maybe a rash.

"I am curious of how god choose you. Vas it at bar and she was drunk and gave vink or vas she not drunk and she liked eyes? I kid, I kid oho I am such kidder today!"

He looked to Alphonse and gave him a slight nudge with a boisterous chuckle with smoke pouring out of the Khadorians mouth. He was having a good time while understanding absolutely nothing of what was going on with all this mechanik talk.

Alphonse felt content settle over him with the apology, "It's fine- just something I don't take kindly to. So let's forget about it, in the meantime, shall we get a move on?"

At the man's mention that the Lady of Gears had 'chosen' him for his profession, and that he had not once set foot within a monastery of Cyriss, Alphonse felt slightly more at ease. The man was simply a self-styled prophet, likely with some arcane spells to augment him. He wasn't an actual warden of the Lady, and as such the Arcane Mechanic took a polite puff of his cigar before smiling and nodding.

Alphonse couldn't help but laugh at his companion's joke, giving him a friendly elbow back. "Come now, friend! It isn't polite to make fun of one of the world's first Gunmage Farmers!" He sniggered, "Though," He said in a more serious tone, "I can't say his fake arm is half-assed. Perhaps he keeps his backhoe in it? Ha!"

Shaeldath started visibly calming down, saying, Ah. I see. However, one cannot be too careful when someone is bearing a scythe. I once saw 3 people try to mug a man bearing a scythe. They were professionals, as well. He sent them all to the hospital. Shaeldath shudders, and continues, He... after they hit him, used his scythe, and swept the feet from under one of the muggers. He... managed to put them down on the ground in a manner of seconds, and when they tried to get up, he kept them down, inflicting horrible tissue damage while doing so. It was... vicious. Powerful. Now you know why I reacted the way I did. The scythe is both powerful in means of inflicting tissue damage, and controlling the battlefield.

He takes on a far off look and grows quiet.

Alphonse patted his Khadorian friend on the shoulder, doing his best to keep a straight face in the presence of the unstable men. Ivan was a good man, but some of these other folks concerned him slightly. They'd probably let off some of the pent-up steam with a bit of drink, but Alphonse knew he'd need his loyal friend at his side to help with some of the tougher work in the lab.

He nodded to the warlock before turning to Ivan, "Want to come with, buddy? I'm sure we could pick up some ale on the way there, maybe find some of these Cyngaran 'ladies of virtue' for you, yeah?" He asked with a bit of laughter, taking the cigar from his mouth and tapping a few more embers out.

Either way, he'd help the spell-happy Warlock out. This new company he was in made him uncomfortable with their predisposition to violence- it seemed like a brawl and a shootout was only a few moments away from their eagerness to go to war. Then again, every war needed soldiers- he just seemed to have been tossed in with the most weapon-oriented of them all.

Shaeldath shrugged. There are plenty of other attractions around town. My home is fairly unpresentable right now, so I'd prefer that you stayed away until I could get it cleaned up with Alphonse. "You could say that. Cyriss is usually indifferent, but all gods have a small trace of compassion, even the more malign gods have been known to save one of their favored," He turns towards the rest of the group, "i will remain here and gather some supplies, is there anything you may need?"

Well, sturdy, light-weight materials are best. Possibly some mithril, for an alloy with steel. That would be useful for construction, a light, sturdy object. It makes them more efficient.

Alphonse patted his Khadorian friend on the shoulder, doing his best to keep a straight face in the presence of the unstable men. Ivan nodded his head and puffed on his cigar some more, which was slowly becoming not a cigar but a burnt stump. He grinned as well finding the thoughts of Cyngaran women, ale, and something more to smoke would be a lovely idea.

"Da it vould be of best if I accompany you Alphonse. Plus I am sure I could meet nice lady and make her scream several gods names, not too loud I vill make sure. Drink vould be nice as well, strong and bitter like most Khador vomen."

Alphonse nodded to the Cleric, "Yes. Six Chronometric Triggers, four large-size Accumulators, a couple feet of Arcano-Conduction coil, four Elemental Emitters, eight blank rune plates, two barrels packed with lye, twenty pounds of silver in cast ingots, three blunderbusses, eighteen shots' worth of gunpowder for the blunderbusses, six bars of copper and ten of the lightest iron you can find. Ah, and..."

The mechanic thought for a moment, "Thirty gallons of piss, dredged up from the latrines if you would? As well as this, sixty four-inch rivets, a nice woman and some Khadorian ale for my friend here," He said to Ivan, giving the man a pat on the back, "Six pounds of melted wax, four gold bars, an induction belt, and...ah! A carriage would be nice, with the horses and a driver."

Turning back to the Warlock, he flashed a wide smile once more, "So, shall we head back to your home? Ivan's quite good with kids as well- my, my son even calls him 'Uncle'!" He remarked with a short laugh, "So, let's go, let's go, I'd hardly want to dally!"

Jaral, you could probably go visit some of the mechaniks or gunsmiths. There might be someone there as interested in guns as you are. Even if you don't want to buy anything, you might be able to strike up a good conversation. Maybe get some new ideas on how to improve Cerberus.

Alphonse laughed, "Why not, my friend? I know I sound like Ivan when I say this but- a woman can do a man some good! I suppose you could just go to a local eatery that caters to soldiers like yourself, but back in my wilder days- when I was your age- I used to visit this one brothel all the time. Wonderful girls, really."

He lost himself in a momentary revere, before pointing back to the Cleric, "You could probably help him find some of the stuff we need. I could use three pounds of sulfur, two gallons of pure anesthetic, and about ten pounds of salt."

With that final order put in place, he followed after the Warlock, remembering the golden days. He really should have written to Karamel, but back in those days, it was really just wandering from one place to the next, making his way with bits of Mechanika...

Kind of like right now, actually. Except he had a home. A beautiful home, which had made the Gunmage's words sting all the more when he heard them. They really were here to stop...that sort of thing from happening. The idea of his wife and son being murdered, those words causing vivid images...

Well, he didn't know what he would do, but he felt comforted by the knowledge that he would never let that happen. Ever.

The doorway to the alchemical lab is open, and as you approach, the smells of chemicals grow stronger, and you see that it's in dire need or organizing. Yeah, I hear you. People shouldn't fight wars over small differences, just so leaders can prove that their way is superior, just because they have a weapon that can kill more people than the other person's. People get killed in the crossfire. However, there will always be conflict. There will always be good and evil, and they will try to destroy each other. Then, people pass judgement upon others, declaring them evil, and then fighting wars over it. I only signed up for the prospect of peace. If one force is stronger than the rest, then people will listen to that force. For a time, there is peace. I just hope to make sure that that time lasts long enough to permanently negotiate peace, and possibly start merging the kingdoms. It's a far-fetched dream, but it's the only one I have. I'll just go and straighten up the mech lab while I finish cleaning it up, and then I'll go get Ivan his vodka. he says, opening the door to a workshop filled with parts. It was much cleaner than the alchemical lab, but it was still a wreck. After breathing a short incantation, the warlock starts walking on the walls, straightening the equipment hanging from it. After half an hour or so, it's done, and Shaeldath gets out a large bottle of clear liquid while wearing heavy-duty gloves, and hands it carefully to Ivan. Try not to drink too much at one time, there. Enough of that could make a dwarf take pass out. he says with a good-natured laugh.

With that swig the large but strong Khadorian went off to find a tavern, a wench and a place to sleep for the night!

You arrive at the shop to see Jarral and Rhaid speaking to a gnome woman behind the counter and Lanxton standing off to the side, when you enter, he looks over at you before walking over, "we may be a little while, they're dealing with Amelia, trust me, when she gets started on a new gun design its hard to get her to stop talking."

Amelia looks up at Shaeldath before giving a warm smile, "Actually, i was marvelling at the design of this man's gun," indicating Jarral, "I have never seen its like before, he was asking about some of the revolver chambers i sell here."

"Also, i don't believe i got your names. I'm Amelia Blackmoor."

"Right," she says blushing, "sorry, that just came out. First, Rhain, the chamber would go behind the barrel right in front of the flint, we'd also have to modify it to get the bullets to be placed in." she then turns back to Shaeldath, "I believe he was planning on installing three four chamber casings, one for each barrel. But, since i was unfamiliar with the design, i wouldn't have been able to modify it very easily."

I think that I may be able to install it... maybe add some rune plates, to add kind of magnetic attraction between the bullets, giving it a bonus to hit, and then super-charging the bullets to shove the target back, and exasperate wounds... This could work. However, Jaral, you have to buy the parts. You still owe me for the rest of the gun. he shook his head and sighed. Nah, I care too much about the gun not to improve it. What's the damage going to be? (monetary-wise, that is.)

Well, I'll bill him extra for installation, but I have some... other ideas that need to be developed. Lets just say, that if I put them in Cerberus, then the gun could blow a hole through an adamantine golem. The alchemical components help that too, though. he says with a smile, walking out the door. Once he gets back to the lab, he starts experimenting with a way to make a crystal-based alchemical device that could store energy. As the Warlock was left to follow whatever bloodthirsty ventures filled his heart, Alphonse took to his own work. Full well knowing that he was within another man's domain, he took his usual set of safety measures in research. Setting his Liber Mechanika upon the table, he swiftly undid the steel chains binding it. The iron-cased book, composed of fireproofed vellum, was where the Arcane Mechanic kept all of his secret schematics, random musings, spell incantations, and his ordered thoughts. As such, he had heavily encrypted it- writing in every language he knew. Trollkin, Gobber, Ogrun, and more besides. All of them were blended together, and even now he began to flick through the pages. This wasn't just his own book, but his father's, as well as his son's in the future.

There. Flicking through, he read the pages in regards to Alchemical components. His father had once used what he now searched for against the Baron's Warjacks, as well as the fortress of the Marquis. With any fortune, amongst the edge-to-edge writing and sprawling diagrams that folded out, amongst the sheafs of paper so hastily glued into the binding, he would be able to find the same ingredients used so long ago, and repeat- if not improve upon- the refining processes. So much knowledge lost...how could Alphonse ever hope to recover it all?

Taking twenty on the Knowledge check for Schemata 1 & 3. Once the knowledge check is passed, Alexander will recode it back into the Liber Mechanika in a mix of Ogrun and Gobber. After doing so, he will then actually craft both devices, taking twenty once more. They are both prototype units- failure cannot be afforded due to simply rushing ahead.

(You find a fine white powder for the 6th crystal)

The sludge seems to react to the energy of your magic, gaining a more clay-like consistency before hardening substantially in a flat disk, a second shot causes it to become malleable once more before it again solidifies. It is also extremely light for its volume.

The red crsytal glows brightly, slowly dimming over the course of a few minutes, the blue one reacts more violently, creating a sudden flash before shattering, the green acts more sedately, creating a dull thrum and dim light that remains even after your work is finished, and the clear seems to absorb magic without any chysical signs but also attracts nearby metal towards it.

After seeing the crystals, and his unlikely success, Shaeldath smiled. It was nice to have some success now and then, but with this... he hit the motherload of usefulness. Not only did he make devices to store energy, but he was capable of making them have different, unique capabilities. Now, the only substance which remained untested was the powder, the one that he had payed special attention to. This one would definitely have some useful, or at least interesting, capabilities. He proceeded to test it like the others.

Also, how long did the clear crystal exert the magnetism? a few minutes? Seconds? Hours?

The rune is part of the celestial tongue, it means corruption and is often used by alchemists to represent a corruption of power or body.

After you finish your research on the rune, you see your final alchemical formula create a much larger crystal. It is opaque, unlike the others, and is perfectly round. You can see shadows and shapes swimming inside the sphere but cannot make out what they are except they look like nothing you've seen before.

As Alphonse worked his section of the workshop was a flurry of activity. Having nailed up the formulas and equipment designs to operate. Lighting up a cigar as he got to work, the orchestra of noise that ensued was something that all of him appreciated. This was no realm of scythe-wielding false prophets, or mad gunmen eager to fill human beings- actual human beings- with bullets. This was a place of scientific learning and experimentation, and as the Mechanik quickly strapped on a crude breathing apparatus made from sopping wet cloth, he grabbed the first of the supplies.

Three massive iron boiler tanks had been moved into position for his work. Nodding to Ivan, he couldn't help but smile beneath his breathing hood. With a heave-to, the first of the barrels of horse urine was dumped into the funnel draining into interconnected boilers. A network of brass tubing and wiring had been set up between each vessel, a hopper full of coals burning white hot as Alphonse tossed a few extra tinders inside.

As that was prepared, he turned to one of the workbenches, swooping like some blazing scientific being. The cigar in his mouth puffed smoke into the air as he grabbed handful after handful of lye from open containers, tossing it like some ancient warlock upon a cauldron suspended over a low-hanging fire. Sizzling smoke began to rise as the chemicals began to separate, sparking coils lighting up in the background. Embers sprayed wildly as he darted from the boiling cauldron to overlook the steam-hammer as it reached full bloom. The smell of ozone, spilled urine, lye, and a dozen other compounds began to waft through the air as he did so.

With the fluid hands of a wizard performing some great arcane feat, he tossed several pounds of salt into individual glass containers, the amount of fire being used at the moment causing the heat of the chamber to become almost stifling. Sweat beaded his brow as, in the background, Ivan's rippling muscles heaved to lift the now-bubbling cauldron over to a massive steam-driven mixer to ensure saturation. Donning a pair of heavy smith's gloves, Alphonse returned to the blazing heat of the urine-filled boiler tanks, taking with him a pair of pig iron tongs. Reaching within, he withdrew a single piece of silver bullion, which he then dropped inside of the cauldron of lye and water. Steam blasted into his face as he did so, quickly dipping one piece of silver after another.

The ventilation of the workshop was not sufficient enough to contain all the heat as the smell of ammonia began to arise, Alphonse setting down the last piece of silver nitrate carefully. The water would boil away eventually, forcing the mixture of silver and the more acidic components of lye.

Smiling to himself, Alphonse saw the ammonia begin to drip away through clear glass tubing to a decem of tiny iron containers no bigger than his fist. Knowing time was of the essence as the deadly chemical began to filter through, he cleared a swathe through the workspace. "Ivan! Get the-"

There was hardly a moment's pause before the clockwork mechanisms were in hand. Glancing up to the polylingual schemata pinned along the wall, he began arming the Chronometric Triggers one by one, the clicking of gears and coils being wound up matching with the sizzle of silver bullion finally burning its way to the base of the pot with the last of the water gone. Moving like a blur, he armed the last timer before rushing over with the discarded prongs to the pot. After a bit of cussing, he returned with the cooled pieces of silver, quickly implanting them into the canisters of ammonia extract. With no small amount of speed, he deftly attached the chronometric trigger to each device.

With a final clinking sound, the canisters were sealed shut, their copper base plates shining with fresh polish. Storing them, alongside a pair of large blunderbusses, inside of a hand-crafted steamer trunk Alphonse couldn't help but smile. This was it. He had succeeded in making two things for the military- each fairly deadly in their own right. It took him a moment to realize that he was proud of this fact, and quickly revile it. Spitting out the cigar stub into the empty cauldron, he pulled his breathing mask down the rest of the way. Grabbing the four gold bars, he quickly drew another cigar and lit it up, heading out with the steamer trunk in his free hand.

Heading outside to the carriage he had requisitioned, he put the locked steamer trunk into the passenger section, the precious goods within held safe with a bit of impromptu lashing-down.

"Ivan!" He shouted, "Let's go! I'm sorry for boring you, friend, with all the waiting! I'm sure we can find a nice brothel in town for you now!" He called with an extra laugh, idly drumming his fingers on his re-sealed Liber Mechanika.

The Mechanik gave a sigh as he briefly walked inside. He had wanted to get these items sold, take a quick stop back at home to drop a certain something off, and then maybe spend a bit of quality time with his family. So, of course, the warlock just had to interrupt him in that. Then again, if he was getting eaten alive by an ooze, he didn't exactly want to meet out.

So calling out to Ivan, he walked back inside, "Just wait by the carriage! I'll be back after handling...whatever the man wants."

Your research also turns up the name Heartstone on several occasions, with many descriptions. As he left back for the carriage, he mounted once more, "Right, now that silliness is over, let's head into town. We're taking a quick pit-stop along the way, though, Ivan- something I need to take care of. As he left back for the carriage, he mounted once more, "Right, now that silliness is over, let's head into town. We're taking a quick pit-stop along the way, though, Ivan- something I need to take care of. I'm sure that commander of their is still waiting about for some meek little assistant to think of a new chambering mechanism."

Giving a firm whip of the reigns, he set the carriage in motion, his Khadorian bodyguard and him heading back to the military base. Alphonse had money to make- with any fortune, they'd have a nice "Rainy day" fund for when the shortages finally hit.

As you arrive, you can see the commander directing several individuals around the encampment. He has not yet seen you.

Having stopped investigating the heartstone, at least for the time being, Shaeldath gets to work. Hurriedly, he sets more crystals up, mixing reagents to create 3 crystals like the clear one, diminutive in size (about the size of a small marble)(taking 10 on the check, for a result of a 21). Having set them to grow, he begins to shape the components. Setting up a wire that would channel all of the energy from the clear crystal, he wrapped the other end around 3 ends of a structure, to form a mace-like object whose magnetic fields would, in the presence of 2 opposite magnets and having the magnetism traveled through them, would create 3 separate magnetic fields, causing them to rotate (like the inside of one of those bad-quality motors that you dissect while learning about basic elecrtonics), and attaches a shaft to the middle, and then wrapping the whole thing in a lead cylinder, except for the protruding shaft, and has the aforementioned natural magnets on either side of the sheet. He created 3 of those (read: he makes 3 magical motors), and, while he waits for the crystals to grow, forges a tiny, round metal shell (taking 10 on the check, gets a result of 15), and then drills 3 holes on each side of it. He then places bent pieces of metal, the shape of spider legs, sturdy enough to support the shell, and the materials around it. He then carefully adds the clockwork gears so that when the motor in the middle of the contraption turns, the legs all rotate in such a way that the entire construction skitters forwards (taking 10 again, getting 21 for the entire device). He then adds other bits of clockwork, so that the other 2 motors are on opposite sides, and, when they rotate, they change the angle of the legs, so that when activated, they, used in conjunction, could cause the device to move at an angle. Using all 3 motors in conjunction, the device could be make to move in any direction, assuming that the energy can be channeled. After this, he begins work on the real magic. By taking a small part of each of the crystals, and setting them, in a triangle, on a sheet of metal, and then enchanting them (using Create Wondrous Item), he created a link between the crystals on the sheet, and the crystals in the motors. When one channeled energy into the crystals properly, they could be used to control the mite from a distance. Then, he adds the final touch to the device: he enchants it permanently with Entropic Warding and Spider Walk, (again, using Create Wondrous Item) allowing it to pass, untraced, throughout an enemy camp, over walls and through webs, and be immune to most enemy fire, if it were spotted. By applying the top half of the shell back onto the mite, and then attaching a small harness to the back of it, he created a Tiny mite that could be used to deliver a payload from a distance, which could, at some point, be improved with scrying. After which, he then proceeds to enhance the control mechanism, so that the control mechanism would be easily attached to a hand-held device, and be sturdy, so that dropping it would not bend or fracture the frame. This device required some skill to use (a UMD check), but the reward was the the device could be used to, untraceably, deliver a potentially lethal payload directly under an enemy commander's bunk. Having finished the item overnight, he travels, protected by entropic warding, just before dawn, to the military camp, getting there right after the sun rose, half a day since Alphonse left to give his invention to the commander.

Alphonse unlashed the steamer trunk as he hailed the general, his weathered features set into a hollow smile. He didn't need the commander's approval or friendship- though those could make his job easier. All he needed was his family...which brought up another good point.

"Commander!" He called to the man, before turning to two nearby soldiers. "Grab the trunk- it's full of inventions. Go on!" He instructed, as he approached the military leader.

"I have two new prototypes you may be interested in, and not to beat around the bush, but I'd like to discuss the manner of payment first." He said, getting to the point, "How will we be getting compensated for our efforts?"

(You need to make the UMD checks for the enchanting)
You have some difficulty with the small size of the components you are crafting, the precision necessary causing you to strain your eyes (-2 penalty on spot and search checks and ranged attack rolls). You manage to forge a single mite of about the size of your fist.

(The enchantment will take an additional day and cost an additional 2000gp in magical agents and ritual costs)

Alphonse
The commander turns at your call, "I wasn't expecting a prototype this early, its barely been a day," he addresses the rest of the people around him before heading over, "we had another come by earlier with a clockwork chicken," he shook his head chuckling, "it fell apart after only a minute."

<I do? I don't have the power to enchant something by substituting a spell with a UMD check yet, and I don't need to make checks to enchant something with invocations that I already know, but whatever... I'll just take 10, for a result of 20. And if it takes 2 grand, I'll hold off on the enchanting for now.>

Upon finishing, he found himself walking towards the command camp by himself, without even testing his invention, in the middle of the night. What was he doing? He stopped for a second, and then proceeded to make an impromptu field check of it, seeing how well it performed under pressure. He started directing its movements using another UMD check, again, taking 10 on it.

It twitches slightly before whirring to life. It's movements are stiff and it is slow (10ft/round) but it does move. You can also hear a slight clanking from inside it, not completely noticeable but definitely there.

A small stone also slides towards it, before lifting off the ground and attaching to the exoskeleton. Closer inspection reveals that its actually a small piece of iron.

Shaeldath sighs and says, Well, the lead was supposed to prevent the magnetism from working, but it's good enough. After I enchant it, it most likely will stop picking up metal from the ground. I'll go show the general, and he may give me funding for a better model. Because right now, I'm broke. I need to collect some of that cash Jaral owes me. After I show this to the general. He then goes the rest of the way to camp, relieved that the mite didn't break down, at least. And then he was struck with an idea for what to do with the heartstone later. He would graft a small cerebral relay in each of the mites, and then he would link the heartstone to them. The heartstone's beat could link the mites and have them work in unison, and possibly even form a hivemind, a rare occurrence that he only heard rumors of. Should that work, who knows what he could accomplish? But that would have to be later. Right now, he had to show his proof-of-concept to the general. Along the way, he carefully checks the inside of the robot to see the source of the clanking sound, and, as he brought his tools with him, he gets them ready to fix it.

<How much did I spend on the robot?>

"Chemistry is a very simple science if a man knows what he is doing." Alphonse replied, "And chemical reactions can be expedited provided the chemist in question can order his workplace accordingly. Now, if we may discuss payment for the devices?" He asked, gesturing to the steamer trunk before unlatching it. "They are simple in both form and function, and though they are not complex in operation, the underlying chemistry is fairly advanced. As such, I will have to ask a fair price. If you can find a price you deem fair, that is acceptable as well then I will take it, though I will not be at fault if you are at fault when using these. They are explosives, and will explode if improperly handled."

The commander stands silent for a moment before sighing "Payment is issued after a successful demonstration, not before, you will be aloud to discuss payment with the generals," he points to a pair of soldiers, "take Master Alphonse and his inventions to the generals," he turns back to you, "After this you may return to your family for the remainder of the night."

Shaeldath (several hours after Alphonse's Interraction)
You come to the army camp to find it empty. Everyone has turned in for the night. However, you spot a light from a guard shack

Alphonse nodded, "Very well." He stated eventually, "If we are to get this done and over with, then let us get it done and over with- I have dallied long enough with my efforts, and I could stand to spend a good night in a warm house." He commented, "Tell me, commander, do you have family of your own?" He inquired, taking out a cigar and lighting one up for himself. He then followed after the commander, waiting to meet with these "Generals" spoken of. He had taken his time in locating the materials, and he had also taken his time in crafting them painstakingly.

Shaeldath activates entropic warding and walks into the guard tower, and then he waits for dawn, which is just minutes away.
