The world and how you got where you are (reposted from recruitment thread):
The known world consists of two major continents and various islands in between. The continents are the Shining Lands, a group of lands consisting largely of “civilized” races (humans, elves, halflings, gnomes, dwarves, and half-elves), and Avrem, a continent of lands inhabited largely by reptilian races (kobolds, lizard folk, and troglodytes, etc). The Shining Lands and Avrem are perpetually at war. You are (were) a soldier from the Shining Lands in that war.

According to legend, there is a huge island, located in a prime strategic location between the Shining Lands and Avrem, that no one ventures near. It is said that this island, known as Ark’Aneri, was once the site of great kingdoms and more riches than could be imagined. It is also said that the ruins of those kingdoms could be found — and plundered — if one could reach them.

However, no one has set foot on that island for over a thousand years. An ancient sea witch, called Zilieva, lives on the island, and she does not like travelers. It is said that she once sank an entire navy of the Shining Lands because it ventured too near Ark’Aneri. Even if one could reach the island safely, plundering the ruins would not be easy. From the savage tribes still living on the island, to the dangerous native animals, to the old defenses of the kingdoms, the island of Ark’Aneri is a deadly location. Or so it is said. Only the foolish would attempt an expedition there.

The captain of your ship was trying to take a troop of specialist soldiers to Avrem and drop them behind the fortifications in order to wreak havoc on the reptilians. To do this, he attempted to skirt Ark’Aneri. All seemed to be going well, until she appeared. An old, bent woman, walking on the ocean’s surface. When she gestured, the worst storm you had ever experienced began to pound your ship. As she watched, your ship foundered, and all aboard were claimed by the waves. All save one two. You wake on the beach among some wreckage…

Your ship had been attacked in the late evening, when you were about half-way past the island. Now, it is morning, and you find yourselves lying on a sandy beach among some of the wreckage of your ship. The sun is shining, the sky is clear, and seagulls fly overhead.

The beach is a fairly narrow strip of sand that gradually transitions to a dense jungle. To either side, the beach continues for as far as you can see. Around your current location, you can see various pieces of your former ship - some rigging, sections of planks, and scraps of the sails. Other than the two of you, there don't seem to be any survivors.

Kraith begins to to move, but every joint in his body protests simultaneously. "A-are, uh, are you OK?" he asks the man beside him, his voice strained and scratchy. "I don't think I'm hurt too badly... just a little banged up and sunburned." Now that Kraith stops to think about it a little more, his skin felt like it was on fire. He forces himself off of the warm sand and tries to find some shade.

Well that was fun wasn't it? Yes, I think I'm fine. A few minor cuts and bruises. Do you know where we are? Where we crashed?. He gets up and dusts himself down of sand. Running his fingers over a few of the larger cuts and looking inland. He follows Kraith into the shade

Agreed. Still...I don't like not knowing our exact location. Nor not knowing where our comrades are. Your station...what is it? Judging from your garb you look to be one of the army medics...or chaplains? While saying this Zain is taking in his surroundings, attempting to notice anything unusual in their immediate viccinity.

*Grin* And what a lovely tree I'm sure it is

I suggest we get off the sand...This leaves us at a tactical disadvantage, hampering our movement. Besides, I hate being in the open like this. I suggest we get our bearings in the jungle. I saw some of the tactical maps....Maybe we'll spot a landmark or some such thing

Zain heads into the jungle, drawing his daggers to his hands as he does so and actively searching the tree line for any signs of movement.

It's an obelisk. Seems to have been made of granite. There are four sides, and all are carved, but you can't tell what the carvings are without removing the vines and moss that grows over it.

zenanarchist
2010-07-05, 06:38 PM
Zain thinks removing the vines would be a good idea, but has no way to convey this to Kraith without giving away his position. If Kraith turns to the trees to look for advice, I'll signal my okay with my index and thumb in a circle. If he does not, I'll leave it to his better judgement, keeping my throwing daggers ready.

Edit:

I just realised the folly here. Kraith has a better range increment than me, though I get TWF with the daggers...I still can't hit anything too far away, I should of left Kraith to the trees.

You think it might be a sign post. Near the top, where the carvings haven't been quite as damaged by the plants, you think you can make out "North", "South", "East", and "West" in elven. If the rest is in elven, it's in a dialect you don't know.

1) How are you going to make sure you are heading south through a dense jungle?

You can certainly take 10 on spot/search/listen checks as you go along. What is your result?

Kraith's turn. Note that the creature is in Zain's space (I can't find the rules for that at the moment. My feeling is that it's a penalty to attacking the creature, in order to aviod attacking your ally, similar to the -4 for shooting into melee. Do either of you know?)

We can make a map in any number of ways. The most obvious and effective method (to me) is to use a charred stick to stain cloth; we can weave together fibrous plants to create a patchwork to hold the cloth (or even woven vegetable matter), as well. I'm sure simple dyes can be made from the surrounding plants and animals. It may be "gross" but blood can be a very effective ink. You do what you must to survive, eh?

"It will be full dark soon... We should start making camp. My suggestion would be to find a very tight grouping of trees. The animals will know their territory, and most things dangerous to creatures of our size will stay away from enclosed spaces. Simple hammocks take a few hours to construct, but are light enough that we can bring them with us tomorrow." Kraith wipes the sweat from is brow before continuing. "We'll also need to start a fire, so we should start gathering kindling and wood as well. There is much to be done."

Recap:
After washing ashore on a seemingly deserted island, our two heroes made their way through the jungle and found an elven monolith. In an attempt to find it's creators, they trekked through the wilds to a small stone building. Upon searching it, they found nothing but herbs and a small, ornery creature out for blood. After dispatching their pitiful foe, our heroes resumed their journey once more. On their way they faced off with territorial monkeys and an inquisitive leopard, but night was hot on their heels. After a quick monkey-meat dinner the two companions threw together some improvised bedding, and the warrior volunteered for first watch.

I think that about covers it.

I don't remember exactly what was decided re: the map, however... If you'd like to keep one I'm sure it would come in handy, but I think that neither I nor Kraith have what it takes to keep up with it.

Also....Savannah....I know this is unorthodox...and highly cheesy...But as a mechanic...Could we presume our heroes are adepts at map making...(being soldiers) and thus make proficient maps. However seeing as Lynd and I are not map makers.... We can presume knowledge of the areas we have been...and...that's where I lost how it would benefit us? Maybe we could ask and be answered on anything we've covered so far...E.g the dwelling where we met the demon...

Not more than an hour after Kraith went to sleep, Zain feels something drop onto him from the trees overhead with a whirl of claws and teeth.

Bite [roll0] for [roll1] and rake with claws [roll2] for [roll3].

Luck be with me today!

Zain wipes his blades down on his clothing. Looking to Kraith with an arched eyebrow and a big grin: Your turn at watch I think, friend. Oh, dinner for tomorrow. He winks at his companion.

Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Kraith speaks softly. "Fair enough, my friend... Fair enough." The cleric takes his place to begin watch.

OOC: Savannah's thought process:
1. Hey, zen posted. It's really late at night, and I'll need to do a bit of rolling before I post, so I'll do it tomorrow.
2. (next several days) Lesse, I've posted in all the threads that show up unread. Great.
3. (days later) Crapcrapcrap. I need to go back through my subscribed threads more often.

Also, I feel that I should mention that I wasn't being a jerk DM when you got attacked by a leopard the second time. The dice said you got two leopard encounters, it may or may not have been the same one. Also, I'm going to be rolling my own dice to determine random encounters, as it's a pain to roll then edit...

You trek onward, scribbling down notes on a piece of bark with some charcoal as you go.

Roll spot and listen.

As you are walking along, a couple of hours later, you think you catch a glimpse of movement ahead. You don't see it for more than a moment, but whatever it was looked.....humaniod.

zenanarchist

Kraith, ahead. Something moving, possibly humanoid. Stood on two legs. Zain points to the last area he saw the humanoid and begins to give chase unless Kraith objects.

Wouldn't normally be this rash but so far this is the only probably lead we have to go on as to what's going on here.

I've got three interested players so far. You get anyone?

One's interested in a melee character (dwarven warblade), which seems to be the same role you're in; one's interested in psychic rogue, and I've never used psionics but he was able to give me a link to the class and the powers are in the SRD, so I'm willing to give it a try if you're okay with that; and finally one is willing to play a cleric or druid, but is also willing to let the other two have the spots.

Wow, that was all one sentence.

As Kraith heals Zain, he feals a feeling run through his system...The best he can describe it is...Blue. He felt blue as the feeling of the cure spell ran through his entire body.

As he turned to Kraith to thank him, the man vanished. Zain, eyes darting between the trees trying to locate his travel companion, trying to remain calm... He yells out Kraiths name once, twice...Then, resigned...Continues his travel, dejected... He would continue his search alone for now, it seemed.

Clear water tablets make any water source (salt, poisoned etc) completely drinkable. I think. That's what I thought I read yesterday anyway.

Mechanically done. (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=245376)

Having looked back at the start of the thread, should the story end with Quarion in the army?

Savannah
2010-10-09, 01:53 PM
I prefer smaller games, but I can handle bigger ones. 4 is quite reasonable, however.

Backstory of being in the army would be ideal, as you were also on the ship.

Devmaar: Sheet looks good (although I still need to finish reading up on psionics :smalltongue:), but two points: Shooting into melee will be at a -4 penalty, as you don't have Precise Shot, and your class/cross class skills aren't checked off, so the sheet isn't calculating your skill points properly. Your stats are significantly worse than anyone else's, so why don't you add +2 to any two stats (as long as that won't bump them over 18 before racial modifiers). By my calculations, that should put you in the range of Zain and Kraith, although not anywhere near Talar ('cause no one's going to be near his stats :smallamused:).

Devmaar
