A little OCD part of me has always wondered why close ranged combat is always fixed at 30', but the standard for "close range" magic spells is 25' + 5'/2 levels. For the sake of consistency, I'm interested in redefining 30' for close-range ranged combat as 25' + 5'/2 levels (or BAB). I'm expecting that to have a few basic results:

one less distinct rule to remember
high-level rogues sneak-attacking from further away
slightly more benefit for feats like Point Blank Shot

What other consequences can you foresee as a result? Is this a reasonable thing to try?

It's an arbitrary restriction, based on the fact that most critters of Medium speed move at 30 ft.

I see no issues with your change, it's a good one. :smallwink:

I never really thought about it too much, but your idea makes sense. It would also make my current sneak-attacking wizard's life a little easier.

I've thought about such things before, and it seems like a rather simple change. I foresee very few negative results.

Rogues would love it certainly.

Seems like a good idea. Doesn't really change power level much, and it makes sense that a rogue's sneak attack range should go up a bit along with the rest of their skills.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll try this out next time I get to DM.
