Legal issues of the D&D 3.5 franchise

I was wondering if I could start a thread in friendly banter discussing the possibility of another company buying the rights of D&D 3.5 from WotC and continuing to print source books. Basically, is it possible, how feasible is it, and the specifics. I'm not sure whether this collides with the “do not ask for legal advice” or any other rule, so I thought I would check here first.

Speculation on whether someone might buy D&D 3.5 from WotC is probably fine and if it gets into mention of some barriers, it's probably fine. But if the conversation goes to advice on how someone might do such things, that's probably going to be locked. It's not quite as bad as someone asking for advice on how to copyright their webcomic because it seems unlikely that anyone is actually here seeking advice on how to buy out the D&D rights, but it's still going to get locked.
