While I assume that the expanded spellbook class feature of the master specialist lets you only chose from the wizard/sorc list it dose not specificity state that the spell has to be from the wizard/sorc list in complete mage, it just says it has to be from your chosen school. Dose that mean a master specialist could learn spells not from the wiz/sorc list with with expanded spellbook provided they where of their specialized school?

I'd never noticed that before, but yes rules as written say you can take any spell that's from your school so I would guess you'd be able to take a spell not on your normal spell list.

This is covered in the errata, which added a sentence preventing you from grabbing spells from your school not on the wizard list.

Rendering it essentially a discount scroll class feature. Whoop-dee-doo. This could've been actually useful.

It's still free monies. Yeah, it could have been better, but it is still a freebie.

Yeah, no need to make Master Specialist even better, really. You can always see if your DM will allow you to use it to research a custom spell of your specialty school for free, though. It'd technically be on your spell list.

Actually, it's still pretty good. Not every backwards village or kobold's lair has spell scrolls just lying around. Especially not the one's your DM doesn't really want you to find/hasn't thought of himself.

This is basically a way to guarantee yourself that must-have spell.

Yeah. Many a low level wizard spends his career leveling in dank pits far from the learned towers of his youth.

Eh. Not that significant. Consider, you get two free at each level anyhow. For one feat, you can double that ratio. So, it's worth a tiny fraction of a feat.

I mean, it's a freebie, and sure, I'll take it, but it's not THAT significant.

You can enter MS at what, level 2? 3? It's not meta-magic effect or anything, but compared to a wizard level? It's pretty pro.

Level 4 normally, I believe. 3 with basic early entry shenanigans, 2 with dusk giant cheese.

It's not bad, mind you, but you do have to consider if losing the bonus MM feat(or an ACF for it) at level 5 is worthwhile. You get a minor arcana, Skill Focus: Spellcraft, and another spell known in exchange. Plus, you gotta sink a feat into Spell Focus.

It's not horrible, but its not amazing either.

I think MS is a really solid prestige class, especially depending on where you go with it. It gives some nice bennies early on. At level 5, I would rather be casting fly or haste rather than a metamagic'd low level spell, and spell focus/skill focus sets you up for AM and/or Iot7V. And you can always shuffle the feat out for something at a higher level. Once you get access to shuffling, it doesn't really matter what your bonus feat does.
