Our theme this month is...
Summertime

The dog days of summer are upon us. Some are off on vacations, others to camp, while many are trying to grab a few bucks. What would our intrepid adventurers do to beat the summer heat? Sing along with us, dee dee dee dee dee!

(If you're south of the equator, just pretend its toasty out)

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Summer Avatar (anything roughly avatar size)
Best Summer OOTS Avatar (as above, but starring OOTS)
Best Summer Scene (anything bigger than ^)
Best Swimsuit Model (anything in swimming attire)
Best Summer Job (any job done by any person or persons)
Best Rookie Entry
And, as always, the Best Overall award.

I'll also voice my opinion on which entry is the most kick-awesome in the form of a VT's Choice Award, which may be anything that tickles my fancy or was shamelessly tailored to my tastes (I approve of shamelessessness).

Rules
1. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in.

2. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Swimsuit Model
Visual Mind Blast
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/AwakenedDreamer/OOTSAvs/mindflayerspeedo.gif
(by That Lanky Bugger)

3. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

4. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

5. All entries must be posted by August 31st at Noon Eastern Standard Time.

6. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

Good luck!

Summer started June 21st.
9 days of June + 31 days of July + 2 days of August = 42 days.

Autumn stars September 21st.
29 days of August + 21 days of September = 50 days.

Hmm, well, it's not a national thing. 1st day of summer is on the longest day of the year. For the northern hemisphere it's the same for all.

Is it just a local tradition maybe? I was curious and looked it up and don't see where Sweden as a whole has different rulings on this.

Uhm. Here in Sweden, we celebrate midsummer, which basically is the first Friday after the summer solstice. Now, midsummer is hardly in the middle of the summer, but it's even less the start of it. Summer break starts in the first half of June and ends in the second half of August. The meteorological summer (average temperature above 10 degrees Celsius 7 days in a row, IIRC) usually kicks in in the middle of May, and ends in late September. What people call summer usually ranges from May to September too.

If it's winter or not depends on wether there's snow or not. We had 3 consequtive months of snow last winter, but otherwise, you can only count on there being real snow during the January-February period. Everything that isn't snow during the winter months, and therefore isn't winter, is just a terrible weather. It's probably raining too. :smallamused:

Stolen from wikipedia;

In the United States,
summer is often fixed as the period from the summer solstice (June 20 or 21, depending on the year) to the fall equinox (September 22 or 23, again depending on the year).Unofficially, the U.S. summer season is commonly regarded as beginning on Memorial Day weekend and ending on Labor Day weekend. Likewise, another set of pop-cultural reference points for summer in the USA is the time when elementary and secondary schools close down for the "summer vacation". This period usually lasts from around early to mid June until around late August to early September, depending on where the school is located.

Very, very different for here. Winter starts on the first of June and ends at the end of August. Summer starts first day of December and ends last day of February. I believe "the longest day of the year" is midsummer, definitely not the start.

Serpentine
2010-08-03, 04:54 AM
Yep, it's yet another example of the US deviating from most of the rest of the world for no apparent reason :smalltongue:
From an astronomical view, the equinoxes and solstices would be the middle of the respective seasons, but a variable seasonal lag means that the meteorological start of the season, which is based on average temperature patterns, occurs several weeks later than the start of the astronomical season.[1] According to meteorologists, summer extends for the whole months of June, July and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January and February in the southern hemisphere.[2] This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates. From the astronomical perspective, days continue to lengthen from equinox to solstice and summer days progressively shorten after the solstice, so meteorological summer encompasses the build-up to the longest day and a diminishing thereafter, with summer having many more hours of daylight than spring.
The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in Austria, Denmark and the former USSR; it is also used by many in the United Kingdom, where summer is thought of as extending from mid-May to mid-August. The definition based on equinox to solstice is more frequently used in the United States where a temperature lag of up to half a season is common[3].

Basically, if it has people/creatures in it they must be either Stick Figures or *Erfworld-style.

If its just a scene or area or item (for example some of the spaceships and time machines in past contests) they don't have to be stick or erf, but then, if such was the case you wouldn't have to worry about sticks to begin with.

Chistmas
Prawns
Mangoes
Beach
Sitting in front of a fan
Cricket (well, sorta)
Cicadas
Flies
Too many flies
Blow flies
Flies everywhere
Desert
Mirages on the roads
New Year
Australian Jingle Bells:
Dashing through the bush
In a rusty Holden Ute
Kicking up the dust
Esky in the boot
Kelpie by my side
Singing Christmas songs
It's summer time and I am in
My singlet, shorts & thongs
CHORUS:
OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
JINGLE ALL THE WAY
CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA
ON A SCORCHING SUMMER'S DAY
JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT
OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE
IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE

Engine's getting hot
Dodge the kangaroos
Swaggy climbs aboard
He is welcome too
All the family is there
Sitting by the pool
Christmas day, the Aussie way
By the barbecue!

CHORUS

Come the afternoon
Grandpa has a doze
The kids and uncle Bruce
Are swimming in their clothes
The time comes round to go
We take a family snap
Then pack the car and all shoot through
Before the washing up

CHORUS

BBQs
Sausage sandwiches

It's better resized and unspoilered so that the judges can find it easier when they judge. They don't need to look for the small little spoiler box.

Elder Tsofu
2010-08-19, 10:01 AM
As a rule of thumb, if you need to put the image in a spoiler box then it is too large.
Bigger isn't necessarily better, it might make it hard to take in the whole picture if you have to scroll to see it all.

As a judge: it is possible to skim over an entry when looking for them to vote. Moreover, it can be a bit of a pain to have to search it out, and then click it open, and it's a good idea to put "annoyance to judges" in the negatives.
As the Hall of Fame curator: The Hall of Fame is already a pain in the arse to do. Having to search through spoilers only makes it worse.

Read the rules again, as per instructions, and came up with this area which I hadn't seen before:

Posting Oversized Images
Giant pictures that stretch the screen are a bane to people trying to read the boards. Please link to files larger than 400pixels wide, or 500kb, rather than coding them into the post. You may also post images that exceed the width limit under a Spoiler tag along with a note that it is a large image. Please note that images under spoilers still load every time someone views the thread, so large file sizes are still a concern.
(Emphasis mine)
Only wanted to add it to the debate on the last page, as it apparently is against the rules not to spoiler the large image.

It's "only" under the "please don't" section so you might have to do multiple offences before infarction - but still worth noting for the more frequent participants.

Serpentine
2010-08-22, 02:46 AM
We would have an exception to that rule, here. Although I don't know if we ever officially got such an exception... I think that Roland himself started the request that entries be kept out of spoilers, though.

Elder Tsofu
2010-08-22, 02:51 AM

I think the big confusement is what VT really expects to see (whatever it is). I, for myself, find it a bit hard to make out the shape of the upper part of the man due to the tree behind him being very dark too. I'm pretty sure it's intentional, but the question wether or not he's holding an umbrella has been bugging me for some time now.

EDIT: Big project is taking longer time than I expected - mostly due to the fact that I usually lack motivation and/or has something better to do when I have time for it.

Cool! My suspicion has been confirmed: Yes, he's holding an umbrella.

Also, I can finally see what he's holding in his hand. First I wondered if the lantern was supposed to be a pot of flowers or something (I saw the barely noticeable silhouette of his hand as flowers), even though it would be really out of place.

And lastly, I'm not sure wether I do this because I'm nice and helpful even to my competitors, or because I'm an evil bastard who loves to make you waste your time (:smallwink::smalltongue:), but the lights from the houses in the background are too much of a contrast to the rest of the background, and kind of steals the attention from the dark man. Hey Teddy, those would probably best fit under 'Best Summer Scene' though if you shrunk it down to avatar size or just had teddy on fire or bar-be-cuing that'd be an avatar.

Yeah, I wondered when the size was going to come back and haunt me. The reason to why I did a larger-than-120px picture was that some of the details don't stand close examination in that format (and some disappear entirely, thanks to my liking of small pointless details. 4x enlargement is a bit overkill, though, but it has almost become a habit of mine to make a second version of every avatar I make that's 4x larger so that I can show off the details, so I barely reflect on doing so any longer.

I still want to call them avatars, though, since the scene is drawn and sized in a way so that I could use it as my avatar. The background is mostly there to show that this is done in the evening, because all BBQing is done in the evening, and if you don't do it in the evening, then HERETIC! :smalltongue: Basically, another Swedish summer cliché is that in the summer, you grill, and you do so in the evening/early night, period.

I could, however, halve the size without losing too much detail, I think. Sadly, I'll be going to bed now, and early tomorrow morning I will leave the house early and not come back before late Thursday, so I can't wait for any anwer to what's the best course of action. I will reduce their sizes to 240x240px and leave it like that, because I won't be able of editing them any more before time's up.
