View Full Version : OOTS-Style Animation

Has anyone tried to make an OOTS-Style animation yet? I got Adobe Flash a few weeks ago, and I'm trying to animate a standard circle-box-and-lines figure.
This can also be a discussion thread for anyone trying to make an OOTS-style Flash animation. :smalltongue:

And for the experienced Flash users:
In CS5, when I turn a line into a symbol and then enter the symbol and create a shape tween, when I move one end of the line, instead of that end moving, the line seems to flip. I've been trying to get around this problem for at least a week, and it just doesn't work. :smallannoyed:

Damn it, I was going to make this thread. :smalltongue:

Animations are sort of my gimic, oots or otherwise. I have a folder full of em. Though I'm only really proud of a handful of them.

Shape tweens are highly finicky. You don't have to convert an object to a symbol for a shape tween though. I'd suggest not doing that for the sake of easier editing. As for your problem, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by
when I move one end of the line

With a shape tween, let's say you want to shrink a large object down. You just want to have (Let's just say for example) 10 frames. Frame 1 would be the object in it's large form. Frames 2-9 would be a normal frame. (Not key frames! Don't edit anything in these) and frame 10 would be the object how you want it in it's completed state. Then you just right click on the frames in the timeline and select shape tween.

I had some problems with shape tweens as well with my latest animation which used tweens at the beginning, so I just did it frame by frame. It looks much better with a frame by frame animation anyways.

If that didn't answer your question, post up an example of your work so I can see what the issue might be. :smallwink:

Also, flash can be somewhat annoying when it comes to publishing gifs. So I suggest just publishing them as .swf's and use SwfCabin (http://www.swfcabin.com/) to host them. It's a very good site.

Yeah, I know most/all of that, but what I'm trying to do is make a shape tween out of a curved line, and have it move (kind of like the arms in the Cyanide and Happiness animations.).

I had some problems with shape tweens as well with my latest animation which used tweens at the beginning, so I just did it frame by frame. It looks much better with a frame by frame animation anyways.

I think there's a lot of traffic on that site right now, but I'll retry the link later.

I made a thread on this a while ago. I even did a couple of tutorial. I have no idea if it's still about though (and it's probably past the necromancy rule by now anyway).

You guys do realize there's a thread for this, right (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122057&page=33)?

I don't think this is a showcase...

The page usually just doesn't open until the .swf is fully loaded. :smalltongue:

I use cs4 myself, though I learned the ropes with flash 8 back when it was still Macromedia and not Adobe. Constantly upgrading is hardly necessary, plus I honestly haven't heard much good of cs5. Cs5 has a few extra bells and whistles when it comes to actionscript, but it seems to have quite a few little bugs and errors spread around in return.

I'm fairly certain there's no issue with making a thread solely for animations.

Seems like I missed out on all the action. Could we make a thread that let's people post their animated pictures and avatars there?

Not here. But I don't see a problem of doing it in Arts and Crafts (as long as you make it clear that you can't actually use animated avatars on the forums).
But I think I agree with Gimliggamer in that this isn't a showcase thread, more of a help request thing.
(Though that doesn't really stop me from wanting to show off a little <.< )

Excuse me?

First of all, what is tring? Never heard of the word I can't find a translation for it, do you mean trying?

Second of all, in what way have I wronged you? Because it sounds like you're insulting me again :smallannoyed:

<.< Been aaaages since I did animations. I used Serif Drawplus.

*goes and finds some of her stuff* Oh typical, photobucket's down. Meh, will go search for them later then.

Yeah, that's probably right. Mixing them both would probably make that image heavy thread even heavier.

So, first you try to hurt me by mocking a typo. Then you accuse me of insulting you, and you ask what you have done to wrong me. Way to self-defeat. Whatever man, if you wanna fight, keep going. I'll just ignore you.

Observe my extremely primitive animation (http://www.swfcabin.com/open/1280974065), made by drawing a girl and a cat in Inkscape, importing them to Flash CS5, and clicking that button that says "shape tween"!

((I do know more about Flash then I let on. Marginally. :smalltongue:))

Well, here's the last animation I made. "Manually" animated in fireworks.

Dude, you misunderstood me. I wasn't mocking you, I was actually asking you what the word meant. My English isn't perfect,, I though it might be a lesser-known english word that I've never heard of.

I DON'T wanna fight! You're the one who keeps coming up and insult me! At least that's what I think you did last time, you usually insult someone when talking about them as they were not "in the room". But id I'm wrong, then sorry. If I'm RIGHT however, could you please explain what I've done?

And here's (http://s264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/h0wupdohighknee/?action=view&current=Ipodcommercial2ndgo_0001.flv) something I made for an IA last summer. I never finished it.

I also put some animated OOTS-figures of me and my lab partners on a powerpoint I had to do for biology last year.

Awesome. Completely and utterly awesome.

I used to do Powerpoint custom animations. They're actually better than they sound. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27wYqn5ZYK4)'s an incredibly awesome super one.

The first one is eerily hypnotic.

And the second one would've won:

Best Scene
Best Overall

and pretty much anything else you cared to enter it in. :smalltongue:
