View Full Version : Phoenix Magazine Submissions [3.5]

Temotei
2010-08-20, 11:57 AM
This thread will be where everyone submits any homebrew they think is good enough to go into Phoenix, the magazine we're working on as of now.

If you submit homebrew here, make sure to give permission to use it (and hopefully other things you have made and will make) if you haven't already given permission.

The following is a list of people with "mechanics" or "survey" in their description (see this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9154811#post9154811) thread).

Anything I've made is up for grabs by anyone who wants it (I'd like to be credited, but even that isn't necessary), but I don't really think the quality is up to snuff. My favorite is probably my Sacred Healer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126750) class although I think it still needs some work. I made a post on the Extended Homebrewer's Signature thread and linked to it in my sig if you want anything or think anything looks useful. If you decide to use anything PM me and it'll put a (arrogant/cocky./annoyingly proud) smile on my face.

I submit my dabblemaster (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8919949) base class and Pungeon Pendragon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156726) Truenaming-based ToB discipline, since I like those most for their originality and it all seems relatively balanced so far.

Is it sufficient if I just say that anything of mine is up for grabs, and that I would have picked a bit differently from whoever it was that browsed my stuff?

Or should I go through and pull what I think are my best works?

Consider the list from before obsolete. It was limited and is now basically unused.

You don't have to pick your best works, but if you really want something in particular to be in the magazine, submit that.

Might as well put it up.

The Runeblade is a fairly interesting class, though the exact balance needs to be tested. The Link is in my sig.

Assuming we're still on the martial theme:
-The Blade Lords (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146964).
-The Measure of a Man (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149336) Project.

If we're opening up to whatever, ok then.
-The Magister (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139935). But be sure to give Monte Cook his due, just like I did.
The Rearranger (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99314).
-My part of this Reserve Feat brainstorm (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149358). Mulletmanalive and ryleah would need to give approval for their works seperately.
-The Reserve Mage (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147086).

I'm not too sure about just accepting everything people want to be in the magazine. We do need some kind of quality control. How will it be decided what will make the cut? Perhaps a voting thread for each issue?

For example: I think my Warlock fix is pretty good, and I give you permission to include it. But I'm not sure if it deserves to be in the magazine, just like a lot of the stuff posted here, and on the original thread.

I'm assuming that we already have people in place that select what goes and what doesn't. There was a full list of selections before anyone started wanting their creations considered.

The people with "mechanics" and "survey" in their description (top of this page) will be looking at homebrew as it is suggested and weeding out the things that don't quite fit the bill.

Of course, if something is really cool, but has odd or bad mechanics, we'll be asking the creator if we can collaborate with them to change it.

The creatures that are nearest and dearest to my heart are probably the Wing Dragons (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3788332&postcount=9) (Don't forget the option of including Castor and Pollux (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6377600&postcount=32), Gemini Strike (included in the main entry for Wing Dragons), and True Haste (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164282)) and the Mepholk (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4520583&postcount=3) (including Allurehn and all the feats).

While I also think highly and have had positive responses to my series of organ undead (Empty Skin, Gut Snake, Dark Heart, Floating Lungs, Hopping Stomach, Fat Glob, and Zooming Brain) it isn't finished yet (I still have livers, spinal cords, and bladder+kidneys to go) and the brains might need to be toned down to reduce the humor level. Actually, when it is done, I am probably going to submit it to the Char Op thread (or make a new thread) and say "Build me a 5th or 6th level necromantic-focused character (wizard, sorcerer, dread necromancer, or cleric with the death domain) who uses these for maximum effect. I am especially looking for troop mixes, formations, and tactics (remembering they are mindless so you have to control them into executing the tactics)." or something along those lines. The tactical suggestions could be included in the article when it is all finally ready.

Oddly enough, the creations of mine that seemed to generate the most effusively positive responses are the most ridiculous (I don't count my pun creatures, since those can be played for SUBTLE humor). I hardly need mention Falling Anvil (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122824)... but that was seen as specialty issue only material. The only thing I have to add about it is that the Tittering Brick Squirrel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140707)s should probably be included with it when and if it makes it into an issue.

But before there was Falling Anvil, there was the Beige Dragon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/printthread.php?t=59834&pp=40) (drawn as a single panel by Rich of course, then fleshed out), I was very surprised by the amount of positive response I got. Eventually I made their foils, the Disco Dragons (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6844810&postcount=5).

I could say more, but that is probably enough to start with.

EDIT: Actually, almost anything but the organs in my sig is up for grabs... in future month that would PROBABLY include even the unfinished stuff if I were given enough lead time (this month I am... very busy).

If we included this, we'd sadly have to change the name, just to be extra safe. The homebrew itself might be solid though (I don't know...I haven't started checking yet).

There's certainly not a dearth of homebrewers interested in being included in Phoenix Magazine, but if you find anything of mine interesting, you're welcome to use it. You can find everything in the link in the original post (reproduced here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3507396&postcount=14) for ease of reference). I'm most fond of my expanded classes project (hexblade (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146389) and spirit shaman (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154917) so far), my Strangers in the Dark prestige classes (knife (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=937487&postcount=11), sword (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11677) and voice (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11386)) and the content from my contest entries (particularly the Mah'kaarite Sect and the Interlayer Space).

Admittedly, not everything on the list was "approved." While I did take a look at the homebrew and make sure it looked at least formatted so your eyes didn't implode upon viewing it, not much actual evaluating went on at the start. Now, we're starting (or, at least, I am), so things will actually be approved and used once the magazine gets off its feet/talons.

I had an idea, although I can understand if you don't think it could cut it as a feature. There was that Sefirric language that I was working on a while back, and am still working on, although off-line (my new game world I am building uses it). We could have a "learn Sefirric" column?

Or, another idea came to me. Are there any official sources beyond the Draconomicon for the Draconic language? Teaching people an in-game language a bit every issue might work.

On Topic: is there any particular rhyme or reason to the first issue?

Not really. We're running Realm's Fighter fix, and I'd like to include the Sagittarius as a base class. I'm waiting for some feedback from the mechanics critics on which PrCs they like before we figure out what theme we're running with there.

I may also see about grabbing a spellbook or two from the latest competition.

Hmm... would Chthonic Serpent (http://wiki.faxcelestis.net/index.php?title=Chthonic_Serpent) be desirable for inclusion? I'd be happy to have it included, now that my questions have been answered. I'm not quite willing to say "take whatever you want" yet, though - some of it is unfinished, some of it I've already promised to Fax for D20r, some of it I want to revise, etc., but Chthonic Serpent's pretty quality, IMO.

Definitely something we'd consider...provided you can finish it up and tell us what we can feature.

Bear in mind though...if you've promised it to Fax, we're not saying that we have any sort of exclusive right to it. Unless he would have some problem with us featuring it, it can easily be in both places at once.

It... is finished? And that page, at least, and stuff from the related thread (see link in the top-right) are all things you can use.

As for things being in both, perhaps. I'll let you guys know as I go through my stuff and figure out what's good for inclusion.

When you said some of it is unfinished, it seemed like you meant cthonic serpent had unfinished sections a little bit.

I would enjoy that discipline in the magazine.

...oh. Duh. I thought you were just talking about Chthonic Serpent. Apparently you were talking about all your homebrew. Oops.

For the protection of everyone's sanity, I feel the need to re-state that the (single and multi-)Organ Undead are basically the only thing of mine on these boards that I would require being consulted on before their inclusion in Phoenix Magazine... basically, I was hoping to save those for Victorious Press to publish for their profit, and I don't know how compatible that is with this (since 3 of them were going to end up in Monsters in the Playground). Of course, I don't know if they will ever get around to doing that, so it is a decision I could see myself making in either direction if it ever comes up.

Sorry, I was just a little bit subtle when I stated this before, and I make up for a lack of social skills by trying to be very precise.

Err... as long as I am posting this, I might as well say that including the Acorn Folly in the magazine might be... unwise, but that isn't my problem per se. Just a tricky matter of something whose dissemination has to be carefully controlled to preserve surprise on on the player's parts.

I'm cool with you guys taking my stuff and putting in Phoenix. The Fighter Fix probably needs more critiquing and a little more work that I haven't got around to doing, but the Foot Knight and the Swashbuckler are pretty much finished. They're all in my sig.
