1. Hit ctrl+shift+7 while selecting a path.
2. Add Spiro Spline.
3. Add Pattern Along Path.
Tweak around, and there's your hair!

One alternative is to make the hair in small pieces. Then you can combine all those pieces using whatever feature exists in your software to "unite" the pieces into one big object.

Incarnations of Immortality Triptych:

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj123/maxwerx/oots/triptych-medium.png

This triptych depicts three scenes from Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series. The scenes are the book covers of (left to right) Bearing an Hourglass, On a Pale Horse, and Wielding a Red Sword.

=====

The individual panels of the triptych are:

Time (from Bearing an Hourglass)

Death (from On a Pale Horse)

Yeah, I was going to mention this to Teutonic Knight too. We don't want spoilers or thumbnails because it can be irritating having to click a bunch of stuff just to see the images, but putting the panels vertically would help. Similarly, with Teutonic Knight's comic, making it 2x2 might help screen stretch.

I don't want to put the panels one on top of the other because it's a triptych. They panel themes were chosen and designed to be viewed side by side.

I'll see about creating a clickable thumbnail instead.

2010-09-08, 02:41 PM
Can I point out that pictures shouldn't really need to be screen stretchers, If the picture is to big, It's hard to see, so its worth making it slightly smaller so you don't have to scroll up, down, left and right to see it. If it is a comic style entry, organize the panels in a way that fits, because at the end of the day, if two entries are just as good, but one you have to go to quite a lot of effort to see, and it makes it slightly harder to view the other entries, which one is the judge gonna vote for.

EDIT: kinda semi-ninja'd, but my point still stands, and I would have said it anyway

Domochevsky
2010-09-08, 02:55 PM
Right, personally i'm thinking that there should be some sort of max-width, like 800px or somesuch. There isn't really any reason to go wider than that for anything.

Trixie
2010-09-08, 06:04 PM
Well, on 1680 px wide screen even 1200 px wide pictures show up without stretching.

But yeah, it really shouldn't be as wide :smallannoyed:

Elder Tsofu
2010-09-08, 07:20 PM
470 px is allowed in the signature, so if you go larger than that its probably going into the realm of too large.
But its a thing which comes with a few entries, you start thinking vertical.

Teutonic Knight
2010-09-08, 07:47 PM
Yeah will fix eventually. It even stretches my desktop screen which is 1680.

Serpentine
2010-09-08, 07:55 PM
Teutonic Knight's would work as well in a vertical format.
max-is-working's doesn't need to be that big - make the triptych a bit smaller - you could go down to half easily without any loss of quality, though you probably don't have to go that small - and then just post the whole thing, no thumbnails or links or anything. Remember: We they don't mind some screen-stretching, but you want to make it as easy as possible to find and view your entry.
By the way, a link would be about a million times worse than a spoiler.

I don't know if this is right, but I've a bit of a proposition for you artists.

The song "Ain't your Fairytale", by Sonata Arctica, tells the story of a "Mythical beast". I've come to have some sort of lucid dream by listening to the song while asleep.

Anyway, I had a revelation.
Why is it that people don't show Transmogrification and the such with this?

I mean, that old legend of the wizard who created the first werewolf, or Lycaons legend, in which Zeus turns him into a horrible being, and so on, are all magical displays of incredible magnitudes.

So, why don't you guys broaden the idea, and give us something more, not the average "Fire vs. Water magic".

Just saying. :smalltongue:

OOTS art is pretty simplified, but still highly creative. On the other hand, many entries (and most winners) in IA use much more complex art than that, only keeping the "general look" of OOTS. Kaytara's dragon is a fine example of this.

OotS-style, yes. Drawn on a computer? I don't think that matters, as long as it's still OotS-style. OotS-style is defined pretty loosely, a lot of us don't stick very close to the comic at all as is being discussed here.

12 days to produce something to compete with the amazing entries here... :smalleek:

The Vorpal Tribble
2010-09-17, 07:11 PM
Creatures are required to be OotSified (though animals and monsters even in the comics are rarely stick figures, so open to the artist's interpretation like the above amazing dragon scene amongst others), but landscape and such has no requirements besides being drawn and cartooned. There is no 'stick scenery'. As such, if you want to make a fantasy scene without people you can go wild.

It can be drawn by hand or computer. The Giant himself has hand drawn with the Order of the Scribble.

Erfworld-style will be permitted for as long as this site hosts the comic, but there will be no specific Erf-style category.

Are you saying OoTS is bad?

No, I love OotS-style drawing. I like the "sophisticated simplicity" (if that's an oxymoron don't shoot me.) that the Giant has perfected into an art form. There's a delicate balance in which it's easy to add a lot of cool things that end up looking messy. (Not to say anyone has necessarily done this.)

Then there are certain forumites who up the ante and can push it to the edge with the amazing-ness while still holding to the OotS-style and I commend them.

In the end it's up to the judge's preference as to what they think fits most to the theme and the spirit of Iron Avatarist. I'll leave it at that.

Then there are certain forumites who up the ante and can push it to the edge with the amazing-ness while still holding to the OotS-style and I commend them.

In the end it's up to the judge's preference as to what they think fits most to the theme and the spirit of Iron Avatarist. I'll leave it at that.
Sophisticated simplicity... I like that phrase. It describes perfectly what I think of the art in OOTS. Armed with this, let me rephrase what I said earlier.

Many entries in IA are considered OOTS style because they look distinctly like OOTS, especially the characters, but they still completely lack the aforementioned "sophisticated simplicity". Kaytara's dragon is a great example of this, though there are many others.

Finally, I've finished my drawing. It turned out to be much larger than I expected. This is old idea I've had for "Great scotts" competition, as alternative OOTS timeline. Drunk wizard in purple robes is from last panel of this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0130.html) strip. I doubt Inkyrius had so much alcohol in his house -it's there by rule of funny . In second panel of fight scene dragon is green, because she was hit by dimensional anchor. Also, I know D&D rules only basicially, but I hope everything is OK. And I don't know English very well, so there can be some mistakes. So now, enjoy :

No, even though the theme favors me and mine (I've played Jill of the Jungle, remember the throwing daggers bug? I had 21 up at a time), a theme that cuts out large swathes of the artist base is too narrow. I didn't like '80s or Nintendo for the paucity and the poverty of entries; either you "got it" or didn't, and if you did then you didn't need to try, or something like that.

The reason I don't know this stuff is because it was had a cult following during YOUR time, and so then in my time it was like non-existent. I grew up on Pokemon Red and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II. Plus I wasn't aware of all these American/British things; I was born in the US but had parents from across the Pacific who came as refugees during war time. Proabably the most exposure my dad had to these things was the version of Galaga that let you shoot as fast as you could press the button.

Hum... that's not true. You can submit as much images as you want in a category. Haven't you seen all the more "seasoned" avatarists dump enter a bunch of their old avatars in the avatar category when they "fit" the theme? :smallconfused:

He was saying one category per image rather than one image per category. Otherwise, as you said, Art of War and whatnot wouldn't've been nearly as good.

Also, arty stuff:

Oh, hello there. Haven't seen one of you in a while.

Remind me again why I am even trying? :smallfrown::smalltongue:

I really need to learn how to do some of those things, maybe it's just because I have the free version but I simply can't figure out how you do that rain. How?

Slightly blurred, grey and transparent straight lines of different thickness?
Add them semi-random over the screen and it would probably look like it.

Try having the Hatter defeating him with magical powers or something.
What serp said. As is that's not even vaguely magical.

Ignition, you would be much better off saving your picture as a GIF or PNG, not a JPEG. The compression messes up your picture a bit.

I must enter this competition soon.

The "avatar sized" one is PNG, but for some reason when I saved it as a JPG, it was much larger than anticipated. Weird stuff; I'll have to practice some more!

Because the feeling of beating me will be oh so delicious. Ask the other people here, it's quite tasty. :smallwink:

The rain is done in a extra layer with a 0,3px pencil ("Draw Line" instead of Freehand, pure white, scatter all over the screen) at 60% Transparency, topped off with a light helping of blurr to make it mesh with the light. Add another layer to that with the same properties and throw these "sprinkles" in where the rain drops hit the ground/objects and bounce off.

I see, you put quite a lot of work into this, don't you?

(Not that I don't, I just have no idea where to put it into it :smalltongue:)

Blurring stuff is a pain, though. The blurr tool for the free version makes almost no change so I have to mess with the waterpaint tool to make it blurry.

Which, as I have recently discovered, makes a very nice effect in red and orange.

Yeah, v1.1 is rather... limited. I recommend at least checking out the 30 days trial of v4.5+ (http://www.portalgraphics.net/en/oc/) though.

"Mostin the Metagnostic Discovers TimeStop"

And for those who don't know what I am talking about, or what you are missing, go to EN World and read the Tales of Wyre (http://www.enworld.org/forum/story-hour/58227-tales-wyre.html).
And for those who do not have time for the whole thing (hours or days of wonderful reading), the chunk that matters:
At this point Mostin (Mage insane by choice of dealing with psuedo-outsiders) is polymorphed to look like a Kelvezu. The PCs are essentially invading an Evil Fey world, and are in the middle of their first contact... The rest of this spoiler is a direct quote from the story:

Shupthul spoke again, the merest hint of malice in his voice. "King Irknaan has issued instructions that you should attend him forthwith. We have been sent to escort you to his presence."

Crap, Ortwin thought. He smiled graciously. "I regret that, at present, such a visit will be impossible, as today, I hunt. Perhaps in a day or two. My proposition stands, however: King Irknaan is most welcome to join us."

"You misunderstand," Shupthul said menacingly. "Afqithan’s King requires your presence. Your hunt must wait."

"I…" The Bard began, but never finished.

Because Mostin, whether in a fit of paranoia, or anticipating an inevitable coming to blows, acted unilaterally, and made a decision which would change the way that the travellers related with the inhabitants of Afqithan. To the others, it also demonstrated the power that an arcanist of Mostin’s stature could wield in Faerie or any of its orbiting demiplanes. He spat a number of syllables out, prompting bows to be drawn or shot, and eliciting a desperate but ineffectual gesture in response from Koilimilou.

**

Ortwin experienced a strange sensation which lasted less than a fraction of a second – the merest flash in his mind. Shomei immediately recognized it for what it was – a temporal discontinuity in their vicinity. After it had passed, there was a colossal discharge of magical energy, and the tapestry of reality threatened to rupture completely before it rewove itself. Echoes of Sonics hung in the air.

The three Jariliths, Shupthul, the Succubus and twenty-six of the thirty Hell-hounds had vanished: the Captain’s empty armour and arms collapsed to the ground in a noisy rattle. Eleven of the Loquai had been petrified, along with six of their griffon mounts – some frozen with grotesque expressions of terror upon their faces. One other sidhe was dead from fear, and all but one of the remaining steeds had likewise been slain by a phantasmal killer. Each of the umbral quicklings had been reduced to a pulp by sonic attacks. The female sidhe sat upon a stone griffon with a vacant expression on her face.*

And yeah, if wants to take on the Quiescence of the Spheres go ahead.

@Licoot - Well of course it is copy and pasty. Do you think the Giant draws each goblin from scratch? :smallwink:

@Domochevsky - The bigger text box is all it really needed (as that is what kept me from doing everything else, but after ~150 layers, I didn't want to mess with it any more.

The complaint I was expecting was "hey, where are all the sonic'ed to blobs and the floundering flounders?"

Here's my new picture ,from Miley Cyrus' "Can't be tamed" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjSG6z_13-Q&ob=av3e) music video. I'm not her fan, but I liked the first scene of this video where she has wings (when I saw it on TV, first thing I thought of was "magic creature" category on Iron Avatarist ). I hope this creature is magical enough -aftaer all wizards of computer graphics did it .

I make a habit of putting down a new layer every time I need to draw any sort of line that touches or intersects another line, because I'm horrible at erasing things and inevitably I'll find I want to edit that line slightly or get rid of it, and it's easier to get rid of a layer or erase something on a different layer than having to zoom in on the intersection and try to erase the one line without nicking the other line or ruining the anti-aliasing. Generally the layer box on my average avatar-in-progress tends to look like:
Items
Clothing Accessories
Clothes
Facial features/hair
Limbs
Basic Head/Body
(Color)
Board Background (to help with color choices)

Obviously if you're using a vector based program, you don't have to worry about layers so much, since to erase something you just click whatever line/shape/stroke and *delete*

I'm not a expert on these contests, but I don't think you can enter on both Best Magical Creature and Best Fantasy scene. Think you can only enter one, and Best Rookie Entry of course. And please don't put it in spoilers tag, makes the judges job much harder when they need to click.
