Easy, I use Paint.Net, which is not vector based. So I have to worry about the antialiasing, and the overlap, etc. Just a 1 person avatar usually takes me 20-30 layers. In this image there are:
Mostin ~30 layers
Mostin's polymorph view ~30 layers
Griffon ~30 layers
Dude with Sword or Lance ~30 layers
Dudette confused ~30 layers
Each character was layered seperately so I could move them around and not overwrite bits so another 15 or so layers.
Editing this image was pegging my CPU pretty hard (I generally draw at 4x display to again help with antialiasing and smoothing), which means work in progress was not small.

My three biggest mistakes while making this next piece: Not re-doing the pawn what gets zapped (I drew the zappee for some sort of anime-style energy vaporization thing that would have looked awful), using lightning within two pages of the last lightning scene (Derjuin's), and drawing that damnable Bishop with white outlines. It looks horrible, seriously. If I wasn't lazy, I'd re-do him entirely.

But I am so I won't. I just will never post him anywhere alone. The living pawn? I'mma keep him. And call him George.

What can I say, I like what I like. The white goes with the bright colors. But also he's unmistakably Oots style, but with white outline, not black. It's different, I like it. Makes him look charged with holy power or something.

Honestly? I drew the basic outline (general horizon, mountains in background) and then I took a colour (the darker one) and drew some curved downward lines, then curved horizontal lines. And then I coloured them in. You'll notice the mountain-squares on the left are a lot more warped than the ones on the right. I tried to be more itneresting as I went along.

That gnomish hook/hammer looks very much like an ice axe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_axe) to me (except that ice axes have a spike on the other end instead of a hook).

Btw, if you return to that image - you have random red dot on the left temple and the rainbow is not properly aligned, you can see individual shapes not aligning in the end :smallwink:

I'm guessing this a homebrew Greater Rod of Wonder that has some additional effects besides the standard ones. I looked up the standard Rod and it can't teleport the wielder back in time 1 day (that is what happened the first time, right?) or cast Gate or make it rain underwater (seriously...that's the most confusing part for me), or clone the wielder.

I find it a bit hard to follow the comic. I think it goes something like this.

Ellywick is bored on a ship, but she remembers she has a Rod of Wonder!
Flashback to day before, used Rod to teleport herself off ship? :smallconfused: Oh wait, I get it, the rod sent her back in time, during which time the ship moved (relative to the planet).
A 'mantle of second chances' does something. I guess that's some sort of re-roll item or something? Anyway it gets her back on the ship.
She uses the rod again with the 'exact same result!'
She is falling towards the water. The word 'ethereal' appears and a column of water disappears. Does the water become ethereal?
She casts polymorph, possibly as a consequence of the rod. A fish turns into a turtle. Alternatively, that cold be background detail and it doesn't work.
Five minutes later there have been a lot of magical effects, which I guess are effects of the Rod. Various animals are about, some surrounded by little beads or bubbles or other round things, and some fish are trapped in a forcecage. Also, she is blue and there are two of her, one of which is translucent.
A Gate gets created, maybe by the Rod. The gate lets her escape the column of air to a place with a field.
She sits in the gate, where there are butterflies and a monkey. It is pleasant.
To escape she summons a Djinn, apparently.
The Djinn makes her ethereal or something. She leaves the column of air and flies to a town.
The ship that she was on is far from the town. She sits down on some very similar barrels and is bored again.

So, I dunno, is that what happens? :smalltongue:

I thought the same thing, but she turned HERSELF ethereal, not the water, letting her plummet to the bottom of the sea without getting wet and allowing her to breathe. Also, the butterflies and monkey also came from the Rod randomly summoning things before she stumbled on the djinn.

And yes, that is what a Mantle of Second Chances does. You get to reroll anything 1/day.

I grabbed the table off the Wizards site for reference. But you're right that it's a Greater Rod of Wonder.

In that panel she's meant to be sighing because she's gotten a bunch of useless abilities again. Also the "monkey" is a denizen of whatever plane she's opened a Gate to.

Sometime before it is the standard. Sometimes everyone jumps on it within a couple days, while a couple times it may be a little after.

Depends on the judges and the amount of trouble that goes into the trophies. You're looking at about 15-20 different works of art going into it. Sometimes have more trophies than entries.
