As most of campaigns i play end up in cities i want to make some basic models for taverns, towers, houses etc out of cardboard and styrofoam. I don't even know how to phrase my question in forum search so if anyone could point me in the right direction, or give me a few tips or something i would appreciate it.

I don't know what you are looking to spend, but I saw a little model making kit at Hobby Lobby. It is $70...
It is some kind of casting set. You make check that out...

Worldworks Games have templates you can download and print out (http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4&zenid=685ab1426c545f2a01500016c6e11974). They've just come out with a modular system (http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=313) too.

There are better materials to work with than cardboard and styrofoam, you can get them at art supply stores, card stock etc. Styrofoam can be crumbly and the thickness of cardboard can be hard to work .

Also get the best cutter you can and change the blades frequently and get cutting mat. And a metal ruler. Use white modeling glue. I learned this in architecture school where we made a lot of building models.
